The man accused of killing his UPS co-worker faced a judge for the first time Thursday and is being held on a $2 million bond.

19-year-old Elijah Bertrand is charged with murder in the death of 28-year-old Nathan Burk, a UPS driver. Bertrand made a virtual appearance at court in Waterbury around noon Thursday.

Bertrand was taken into custody in Plymouth Wednesday afternoon after a search to find him.

State police responded to what they thought was a crash on Route 8 North around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in Watertown.

That’s when they found Burk assaulted with multiple stab wounds, according to police, who said he later died at a hospital.

Police found a folding style knife with blood on it at the scene, according to the police report. Bertrand's father later confirmed to officers that the knife recovered at the scene belonged to Bertrand, police said.

At a news conference on Wednesday, police said the motive for the killing was not clear.

Bertrand was eventually caught by police after using a debit card in his name at a Valero gas station in Plymouth, according to state police investigators. Plymouth police detained Bertrand at the gas station and when state police arrived, Bertrand admitted his identity to officers before saying "What took you guys so long to find me," the police report states.

Police said Bertrand confessed to stabbing Burk before taking off into the woods off Route 8.

Bertrand is due back in court on January 6.

A New York politician who fled the state in 1997 to avoid a jail sentence was found limping along an Ohio road and using a false identity.

William Jones, formerly a Cayuga County town supervisor, was found by a police officer in Waverly, Ohio, and gave him a ride to a hospital to treat his leg. When Mr Jones did not provide identification, the officer became suspicious and discovered his true identity.

Mr Jones, 71, was convicted 23 years ago for illegally selling eight handguns after his permit to do so was suspended by a judge. While he was out of prison on $20,000 bail and awaiting sentencing, he fled New York.

It was not his first time fleeing a prison sentence; in 1996, he was convicted on charges of misconduct while in office and fled while awaiting his sentencing trial. He eventually gave himself up to authorities a month later.

After his first conviction, a Cayuga County judge suspended Mr Jones' pistol permit.

Rather than handing over his weapons, Mr Jones decided to sell them illegally, according to authorities.

After he was caught selling the pistols he was charged with the criminal sale of a firearm, which is a felony punishable by a short stint in prison.

During that bail period Mr Jones fled, this time with more success than his first attempt.

He managed to lay low for more than two decades before the officer discovered him on the side of the road.

Mr Jones is currently being held in jail in Butler County, Ohio, and is awaiting extradition to New York.

Why he was limping — and what he did while he was on the run — are currently unknown.

A New Jersey teen was arrested on Christmas Eve and charged with the murder of a 35-year-old man two weeks after the fatal shooting, prosecutors said Friday.

Police in Jersey City apprehended the 13-year-old girl around 7 p.m. Thursday. Hudson County prosecutors say the juvenile faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, and other offenses.

The charges stem from the Dec. 10 deadly shooting of Niles Holmes.

Officials in Jersey City responded to the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Wilkinson Avenue around 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 10, prosecutors said in a press release. Police found Holmes with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Holmes was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead several hours later. The county's medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

Prosecutors say "a short time after the initial victim was located," a 24-year-old Jersey City man was found with multiple graze wounds to his arm. He was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A law enforcement source tell News 4 the Dec. 10 shooting is not gang related, but stems from a dispute between different groups.

Video After The Jump

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A 71-year-old Black man in South Carolina was embarrassed and feared for his life when a police officer looking for teens who might have been breaking into cars held him outside naked and at gunpoint after he peeked out his door to check on the disturbance, the man said in a lawsuit.

Body camera video of the June 2019 encounter in Rock Hill shows Officer Vincent Mentesana cursing at Jethro DeVane and telling him not to close the door.

Mentesana orders DeVane to stand outside his home naked at 4 a.m., facing the wall, according to the video, which DeVane and his lawyer obtained through a public records request and released Tuesday. When DeVane asks what’s going on, Mentesana responds, “I don’t want to talk to you.”

The officer held the gun to DeVane’s head for 90 seconds as other officers looked through his home, according to the lawsuit.

“I did what the man said. He had the weapon. He could have took my life in a minute,” DeVane said at a news conference Tuesday with his lawyer.

Once Mentesana got the all-clear, he asked DeVane his name and told him why police were in the neighborhood.

Police did not have a search warrant for DeVane’s house, according to the lawsuit filed Monday, which claims gross negligence, emotional distress and false imprisonment. The suit does not ask for a specific dollar amount.

At the news conference, DeVane said he was embarrassed because there was at least one woman among the officers. He also said he feared for his life; that if he tried to close the door, grab some clothes or argued, the officer with the gun to his head would fire.

“I won’t get over it the rest of my life,” DeVane said.

Video After The Jump

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in Columbus, Ohio, have released police body camera footage showing the moments early Tuesday when an officer on a nonemergency call fatally shot a Black man who was holding a cellphone as he emerged from a garage.

The video released Wednesday shows the Columbus officer approaching an open garage and the man walking along a car out of the garage.

The man, identified as Andre' Maurice Hill, is holding up the phone in his left hand.

The officer fires and Hill drops to the ground.

The officer is then heard yelling at Hill to move his hands to the side and to roll over.

The officer, Adam Coy, and a female officer responded to a call from the neighborhood that reported a vehicle running in the street on and off for an extended period of time, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

The officers did not have their body cameras turned on at the time of the shooting, however the Columbus Dispatch reports the cameras have a 60-second "look back" feature that captures 60-seconds of video, no audio, before a camera is turned on.

The video released Thursday indicates the officer turned on the body camera immediately after the shooting.

Columbus police confirm Coy has been relieved of duty as of Tuesday afternoon.
