A 39-year-old worker died after falling into a molten iron vat of 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit molten – leaving half of his body lying on the floor.

Steven Dierkes, of Peoria, Illinois, died instantly after he was presumably working alongside a crucible when he fell in, according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.

Harwood said the Thursday incident – which took place at the Caterpillar Mapleton Foundry – was accidental & no foul play is suspected.

Deputies were called to the facility around 10 a.m. on Thursday morning in regards to an “occupational accident.”

Dierkes’ death remains under investigation by the Peoria County Coroner’s office, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

A veteran Caterpillar worker, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the World Socialist Web Site (WSWS), that Dierkes “was taking a sample of iron for the met lab & apparently just tripped.”

The unidentified worker explained: “He died instantly, but not all of him went in. Part of his body remained on the deck for the coroner to retrieve.

“It must have been ghastly for those folks that witnessed it and to wait for the coroner with half of their coworker lying on the floor.”

(CNN) Low-income families of color in Oakland, California, could receive some extra financial assistance over the next year and a half.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf announced this week that the city will launch a guaranteed income project to give hundreds of Black and Indigenous families and people of color $500 per month for 18 months.
The project's payments will be unconditional, and recipients may spend the money however they choose.

The Oakland Resilient Families program is the latest trial of a "guaranteed income" system of wealth distribution, where residents are given a set amount of money per month to supplement the existing social safety net.

The project targets groups with the city's greatest wealth disparities, per the Oakland Equality Index, which reveals the median income for White households in Oakland to be nearly three times that of Black households.

"The poverty we all witness today is not a personal failure, it is a systems failure," Schaaf said in a statement. "Guaranteed income is one of the most promising tools for systems change, racial equity and economic mobility we've seen in decades."

Guaranteed income is different from Universal Basic Income (UBI), which would provide enough income to meet everyone's basic needs.

Instead, guaranteed income is only meant to supplement other wages and programs for low-income residents, helping to build the "income floor" on which people in poverty can begin to build financially secure lives.

Although the idea has seen a resurgence in recent years, it's not new -- Martin Luther King, Jr. advocated for it in his 1967 book, "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?"

"I'm now convinced that the simplest approach will prove to be the most effective -- the solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed measure: the guaranteed income," King wrote.

TARRANT COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – A 5th grader in the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw Independent School District has a habit of setting very lofty goals for himself… he also has a habit of exceeding them.

So, it isn’t surprising that Orion Jean wants to continue his mission to do good for others into the holiday season.

Earlier this fall, the Chisholm Ridge Elementary student collected and donated hundreds of toys to hospitalized children in Dallas through his Race to 500 Toys drive. Now, he’s started another drive with the goal of donating thousands of meals to people in need by Thanksgiving.

In addition to the work Orion is doing on his own, the Race to 100,000 Meals food drive will be be accepting food donations from the public on Saturday, October 24. Donations for that one day should be dropped off between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in the Chisholm Ridge neighborhood at 1005 Lindstrom Drive in Fort Worth.

Donors are asked to bring packed meals containing 1 bottle of water, 2 tangerines or 1 apple in a zipped sandwich bag, 1 applesauce cup or tuna pouch, and 1 packaged granola bar. The contents should be inside a brown paper bag with a positive message written on it.

“I’m asking everyone to join me in a race to kindness,” Orion said. “This has been a rough year for everybody, and now it’s more important than ever to show support and love to anyone who needs it.”

Orion began collecting donations earlier this week and has already received nearly 4,000 meals.

Over the summer, Orion won the Think Kindness National Speech contest, where he urged others to show compassion through action. As champion, he was given $500 to start his own kindness project where he went on to collect toys for hospitalized children.

Akon is hard at work on a project that will bring solar power to 600 million Africans. His "Akon Lighting Africa" initiative will use a billion dollars in funding to take "clean energy" to 38 countries by the year 2020.

12351884473?profile=original

"This idea initiated in Senegal in returning to neighborhoods where I grew up," he says. "Fifteen years later, we're still without power. The infrastructure had not moved. They came to us and asked us to find solutions to the energy crisis."

Launched in September in Bamako, the first step aims to create 100,000 streetlights, 1,000 and 200,000 micro-power home systems using solar energy, to improve the living conditions of 14 countries including Niger, Namibia and Madagascar. The program will then be extended into other territories. It should allow the creation of "several thousand local jobs" primarily intended for young people, for installation or maintenance of the equipment.

On Sunday, December 6, the singer spoke at the International Re-Energizing the Future conference in Paris, France about his goals. Check out the video below.

Hong Kong (CNN) -- At least 19 people have been stung to death by hornets -- which may include the world's largest hornet species Vespa mandarinia -- in China's central Shaanxi province in the last three months, according to the city government of Ankang, the apparent epicenter of a recent spate of fatalities and injuries.

A total of 583 people in the area have been stung by hornets since July 1, say city officials. Seventy victims are still recovering in hospitals.

Chen Changlin was hospitalized after being attacked by hornets, while harvesting rice last week.

12350360288?profile=original

"I ran and shouted for help, but the hornets chased me about 200 meters, and stung me for more than 3 minutes," he recounted to the state-run China Youth Daily.

Chen said hornets had first swarmed a woman and child working nearby, who then ran towards him. Both later died from the hornets' toxins.

"The more you run, the more they want to chase you," said another victim, whose kidneys were ravaged by the venom. When he was admitted to the hospital, his urine was the color of soy sauce, according to local reports.

Earlier this month, 30 people -- including 23 primary school children aged between six and eight years -- were injured in a hornet attack in Guangxi province, south of Shaanxi. Their teacher, Li Zhiqiang, told his students to hide under tables as he tried to drive away the insects before he lost consciousness. The school's headmaster told local media that most of the injured suffered stings to their heads, necks, hands and feet.

12350361260?profile=original

Nearly 60 students and teachers were injured in a separate incident in the province at the start of the month, according to state media.

Experts say a number of reasons may have contributed to the apparent increase in hornet activity, including the region's recent hot, dry weather, land development and hornet sensitivity to the smell of people.

The Asian killer hornet, which is suspected in these incidents, are formidable, carnivorous killers, according to the non-profitHoneybee Conservancy. The species feed their young with the larvae of other insects and use their talons and mandibles to sever the limbs and heads of their prey. The hornet's venom sting is a neurotoxin so powerful that it dissolves human tissue, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

12350361468?profile=original

This week's latest incidents spurred the Ankang city government to hold an emergency video call addressing local concerns. Vice Mayor Lu Qi said he would increase investment in regional hornet control. Mayor Xu Qifang added the city would establish a 24-hour emergency hornet response team.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – Another Eminem album, another No. 1 hit.

The rapper's latest release, "Recovery," could sell more than 600,000 copies by Sunday for the biggest sales week of the year, industry sources estimate. It could even surpass the 608,000-unit haul of his last set, 2009's "Relapse."

"Recovery" is on track to be Eminem's sixth straight No. 1 debut -- and sixth overall No. 1. His only album to miss the top spot was his "Slim Shady LP" debut, which bowed and peaked at No. 2 in 1999.

Other albums released this week and due on next Wednesday's Billboard 200 chart include Ozzy Osbourne's "Scream," Miley Cyrus' "Can't Be Tamed," the Roots' "How I Got Over," Herbie Hancock's "The Imagine Project," Sia's "We Are Born," Keith Sweat's "Ridin' Solo," Trip Lee's "Between Two Worlds," Cyndi Lauper's "Memphis Blues" and Macy Gray's "The Sellout."

Next week's chart competes with the same week in 2009 when the newly deceased Michael Jackson claimed the top three albums in the U.S. with "Number Ones" (108,000), "The Essential Michael Jackson" (102,000) and "Thriller" (101,000).
