POTTSTOWN, Pa. (AP) — An escaped murderer was captured Wednesday after eluding hundreds of searchers for 2 weeks, bringing relief to anxious residents of southeastern Pennsylvania who endured sleepless nights as he hid in the woods, broke into suburban homes for food, changed his appearance & fled under gunfire with a rifle pilfered from a garage.

Authorities used thermal imaging from aircraft to pinpoint a possible location & then used ground forces to capture escaped inmate Danelo Souza Cavalcante.

Aerial video footage showed a handcuffed man in a gravel lot & wearing a grey, long-sleeve shirt with law enforcement officers holding both arms. Later, the man stands at the back of an armored vehicle while an officer cuts the back of the shirt from neck to waist.

The end to the search for Cavalcante, 34, unfolded just beyond Philadelphia’s suburbs, in an area of woods, rolling farmland & a county park. The search forced schools to close, led to warnings for homeowners to lock their doors & blocked roads.

Cavalcante escaped from the Chester County jail in southeastern Pennsylvania on Aug. 31 by crab-walking up between 2 walls that were topped with razor wire, then jumping from the roof & dashing away. He had been awaiting transfer to state prison after being sentenced days earlier for fatally stabbing his girlfriend & is wanted in connection with another killing in Brazil.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A city councilor from the Mexican border city of Reynosa has been arrested at a checkpoint in Texas after U.S. border patrol agents found about 93 pounds (42 kilograms) of cocaine in her car, prosecutors said.

On Wednesday, Denisse Ahumada was still listed as one of about 20 members of the Reynosa city council.

Court records show she was arrested on June 10 at an inland security checkpoint in Falfurrias, Texas after an x-ray inspection of her SUV showed anomalies in the door panels & the seats. Border Patrol agents found 42 packages wrapped in duct tape & foil, each containing about a kilogram of cocaine.

Ahumada told agents she was supposed to have delivered the drugs to San Antonio, Texas. She also told agents she had carried such shipments before.

Local media reported Ahumada was part of the conservative opposition National Action Party, or PAN. But in a statement Tuesday, the PAN office in the northern border state of Tamaulipas denied she was a member or supporter of the party, and condemned drug smuggling.

State party leader Luis René Cantú said Ahumada had run for office on the Green party ticket and later asked to join the PAN, but later lost contact with the party.

Reynosa is a violent border city across from McAllen, Texas that has long been dominated by factions of the Gulf cartel.

An Idaho man was arrested after allegedly murdering the man who was the main suspect in his mom's murder.

Raul Alexander Cuevas, 31, was taken into custody last Wednesday, a day after his 52-year-old mother, Michelle E. Luna, was found mortally wounded with multiple stab wounds in Nampa.

Authorities later identified Jesus R. Urrutia, 39, as a suspect in Luna’s killing & he was charged with first-degree murder.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office later reported that at approximately 7:03 a.m. the next day, there was a call of another stabbing victim, believed to be Urrutia, found at a gas station.

When Nampa police responded to the call they reportedly found Urrutia “slumped over in the car, which was running but in park.”

Police found Cuevas 20 miles away from the gas station & he was subsequently arrested for allegedly murdering Urrutia in what police believe was an act of revenge for Luna’s killing.

The Ada County Coroner’s Office ruled that Urrutia’s death was a homicide after he suffered from a “sharp force injury wound to the chest."

Cuevas was charged with first-degree murder, though authorities have not officially determined a motive behind Urrutia’s death & said they are “still figuring out why Cuevas fatally stabbed Urrutia.”

One of the survivors of a Mexican cartel kidnapping reportedly pulled a gun during a fight between children.

Latavia McGee, 34, was 1 of 4 Americans who was kidnapped in Mexico by cartel members who mistook them for Haitian drug smugglers. The group had traveled from South Carolina to Mexico so Ms McGee could get a cosmetic procedure when the group was taken.

She was 1 of only 2 of her group who survived the ordeal. Shaheed Woodward & Zindell Brown, who traveled with her, were killed. A fourth companion, Eric Williams, was shot in the leg, but survived. Ms McGee returned to the US uninjured.

She allegedly took her daughter to an apartment complex in Myrtle Beach, SC to fight another girl. A relative pulled her away from the scene.

Ms McGee allegedly returned to the scene and the children began to fight. The adults at the complex began to fight as well, which culminated with Ms McGee allegedly pulling a pistol from her purse & "waving it around."

The incident occurred on 17 February — before her kidnapping & police have only now acted on the warrant after reportedly giving her time to recuperate & spend time with her children.

She was ultimately arrested & charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Ms McGee was held on a $10,000 bond.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Massachusetts Air National Guard member who has emerged as a main person of interest in the disclosure of highly classified military documents was taken into custody Thursday by federal agents, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced.

Investigators believe that the guardsman, who specializes in intelligence, led the online chat group where the documents were posted. Garland identified the guardsman as 21-year-old Jack Teixeira & said he would be charged with the unauthorized removal of classified national defense information.

The emergence of Teixeira as the apparent primary suspect is bound to raise questions about how the highest-profile intelligence leak in years, one that continues to unfold with almost daily revelations of highly classified documents, could have been caused by such a young, low-ranking service member.

The Biden administration has been working to assess the diplomatic & national security consequences of the leaked documents since they were first reported last week. A top Pentagon spokesman told reporters earlier this week that the disclosures present a “very serious risk to national security,” & the Justice Department opened an investigation to identify the person responsible.

It’s possible the leak may have started on a site called Discord, a social media platform popular with people playing online games.

In one of those forums, originally created to talk about a range of topics, members would debate the war in Ukraine. According to one member of the chat, an unidentified poster shared documents that the poster claimed were classified, first typing them out with the poster’s own thoughts, then, as of a few months ago, uploading images of folded papers.

Four suspects have been arrested for the involvement of the case of the Lousiana State University student who was hit and killed by a vehicle in Baton Rouge earlier this month.

According to East Baton Rouge Police Department, a 17-year-old juvenile and Kaivon Deondre Washington, 18, are being accused of third-degree rape.

Two other men, Everette Lee, 28, and Casen John Carver, 18, are being accused of being principles to the crime. This means that they were present during the incident but were not directly involved.

According to police, Madison Brooks, 19, was leaving a bar in Tigerland around 1 a.m. when she entered the vehicle of the four suspects.

Washington and the unnamed juvenile are accused of raping her in the rear seats, while the other two suspects were in the front seat. The four suspects then dropped her off at a random location which led to her being hit by a vehicle around 3 a.m. on Burbank Drive near Pelican Lakes Parkway.

Deputies say Brooks' toxicology reports show her blood alcohol content (BAC) was .319g%. According to the University of Notre Dame Research, the effects of a BAC between .350g% and .399g% are listed as alcohol poisoning. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was also found in her system.

Musician El DeBarge was arrested in Burbank early Sunday morning, police have confirmed to EW.

The singer-songwriter, best known for his family's 1985 hit "Rhythm of the Night," was charged with four separate drug and weapons charges after officers found an expandable metal baton, pepper spray, and suspected narcotics in his truck, the Burbank Police Department said.

Officers first approached DeBarge (real name: Eldra DeBarge) at a gas station around 3:40 a.m. after they noticed his vehicle had expired tags, Burbank police said. During their interaction, they discovered the weapons and learned that DeBarge did not have a valid driver's license to operate his vehicle.

He was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a baton, unlawful use of tear gas, illegal possession of a controlled substance, and illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. DeBarge has since posted bond and is scheduled to appear in court March 9, 2023.

This isn't DeBarge's first run-in with the law. The 61-year-old musician, who has spoken about his struggle with drug addiction in the past, was arrested and charged with felony vandalism in 2018, per TMZ. He was also arrested for domestic violence in 2007 and for drug possession in 2012, but the drug charges were dropped because of a lack of sufficient evidence. He also served 13 months of a two-year sentence at a California prison on drug-related crimes in 2008.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — A Purdue University student was arrested Wednesday in the killing of his roommate in their campus dorm room.

Ji Min Sha, a 22-year-old cybersecurity major from Seoul, South Korea, was arrested on a preliminary murder charge in the killing of 20-year-old Varun Manish Chheda, a 20-year-old data science major from Indianapolis, Purdue Police Chief Lesley Wiete said.

Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said an autopsy determined that Chheda died of “multiple sharp-force traumatic injuries.”

Wiete said Sha, who goes by the nickname “Jimmy,” called police at around 12:45 a.m. “alerting us to the death of his roommate” in their first-floor dorm room on the campus in West Lafayette, which is about 65 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

He has not been formally charged. Wiete said investigators don’t know why Chheda was killed, but they think he was awake at the time.

“I believe this was unprovoked and senseless.” Wiete told reporters outside the residence hall.

Students living near the crime scene were moved to other rooms & the university provided counselors for those who need it.

Purdue President Mitch Daniels said in a statement that “this is as tragic an event as we can imagine happening on our campus & our hearts & thoughts go out to all of those affected by this terrible event.”

Three U.S. Postal Service workers stole credit cards from the mail while on the job & bought more than $1.3 million in designer duds & accessories to sell online, Manhattan federal prosecutors said.

Chanel, Fendi, Hermes & Dior were the brands of choice.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said the workers’ “brazen criminal conduct” began in December 2018.

The scam saw them “manipulate credit card companies & major retailers across New York & New Jersey by stealing credit cards and using those cards to purchase & subsequently sell, luxury goods,” Williams said.

Postal workers Nathanael Foucault, Johnathan Persaud & Fabiola Mompoint allegedly swiped the cards & handed them off to 5 associates or “shoppers” who bought the luxury clothes & bags at department stores in Manhattan, Brooklyn & New Jersey.

Foucault, Mompoint & Persaud are facing charges of access device fraud, bank fraud & other related crimes.

The accused “shoppers,” Rahsaan Richards, Devon Richards, Conrad Heron, Louis Jeune Verly & Kareem Shepherd, are still at large, federal officials said. As was Johnny Damus, who directed them to buy what he resold on LuxurySnob.com, which describes itself as an online store specializing in “pre-owned luxury items.”

In what’s being described as the largest Orange County drug bust in 16 years, two Buena Park residents were arrested last month after authorities recovered “enough fentanyl to kill 4.7 million people,” authorities announced Wednesday.

About 821 pounds of methamphetamine, 190 pounds of cocaine and 21 pounds of fentanyl pills were recovered after Buena Park police pulled over a minivan leaving a home on March 17, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities did not elaborate on how they calculated the number of people who would die from the amount of fentanyl seized.

Edgar Alfonso Lamas, 36, and Carlos Raygozaparedes, 53, were arrested and have been charged with one felony count of possession of sale of a controlled substance, three felony counts of sale or transportation for sale of a controlled substance, and two felony counts of possession of sale of a controlled substance, officials said.

The men, described as drug dealers, were also charged with two felony enhancements that the controlled substances exceeded 80 kilograms by weight, and two felony enhancements that the controlled substances exceeded 20 kilograms by weight or 400 liters by liquid volume.

The men pleaded not guilty to the charges and remain in custody on $5 million bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for June 7, and they each face more than 37 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

WASHINGTON — Police in the nation’s capital on Monday arrested the leader of the Proud Boys, who is accused of burning a Black Lives Matter banner that was torn down from a historic Black church in downtown Washington last month.

Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, 36, was arrested by Metropolitan Police Department officers after he arrived in Washington ahead of protests planned by supporters of President Donald Trump to coincide with the congressional vote expected Wednesday to affirm Joe Biden’s election victory.

Tarrio was taken into custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest for destruction of property, police said. He was also facing a weapons charges after officers found him with two high-capacity firearm magazines when he was arrested.

A pro-Trump rally in December ended in violence as hundreds of Trump supporters, some wearing the signature black and yellow of the Proud Boys, sought out confrontations with a collective of activists and counterprotesters attempting to bar them from Black Lives Matter Plaza, an area near the White House. By nightfall, vandals tore down a Black Lives Matter banner and sign from two historic Black churches in downtown Washington and set the banner ablaze.

Tarrio told The Washington Post he had participated in the burning of the Black Lives Matter banner and said he would plead guilty to destruction of property and pay the church the cost of the banner.

Another video showed men removing a Black Lives Matter sign at the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church.

“We just want to see justice be done,” the Rev. Dr. Lanther Mills, senior pastor at Asbury, said in an interview Monday night.

The church community is “in some ways of course feeling some relief” following the arrest, Mills added. Even so, she said, “we still remain concerned” about the high number of expected protesters in the area.

Report via KHOU -- Blood evidence obtained from the apartment of missing 4-year-old Maleah Davis' estranged stepfather has been linked to the girl, according to Houston police detectives.

Derion Vence, 26, is in custody for evidence tampering. The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitives Task Force arrested Vence around 2:40 p.m. in Sugar Land.

HPD detectives say in addition to blood evidence linked to Maleah being found at the apartment, Vence was also seen carrying a laundry basket from the apartment.

Vence's silver Nissan Altima was recovered in Missouri City on Thursday.

The laundry basket was found in the trunk of the Nissan along with a gas can, according to HPD.

Although Vence reported his Altima was taken in an abduction, surveillance video showed someone in that Nissan Altima dropped Vence off at the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital on May 5, according to police.

Vence, who had been engaged to Maleah's mother, is the last known person to see Maleah and recent video shared by a neighbor with police shows him with bottles of Clorox and a garbage bag before Maleah was reported missing.

Maleah's mother previously threatened to break up with Vence because of infidelity allegations, according to local activist Quanell X, who appeared with the mother in front of reporters Friday.

(WPBF) -- A Florida man showed up to a junior high school with a loaded AK-47 pistol after his son video-called him to say he was "slammed" by a teacher, according to police.

Christopher Freeman, 27, showed up to school visibly upset on Monday because of the alleged incident. He was arrested at Bear Lakes Middle School and charged with possession of a firearm on school property, aggravated assault and disruption of a school function, WPTV reports.

The school's assistant principal told police Freeman told him in an ambiguous threat during a call that "you're all dead" in relation to the incident with his son.

A school resource officer said he located Freeman in front of the school's main office with a gun sticking out of the front of his pants.

"I want to see the guy who slammed my son. I've got something for him," Freeman said, according to an arrest report.

Officers put the school on lockdown and searched Freeman – finding a loaded AK-47 Mini Draco pistol, according to police.

According to the arrest report, Freeman said he received a FaceTime call from his son at 3 p.m. He told police his son was crying, saying a teacher had slammed him.

Freeman, whose bond was set at $75,000, told police he was upset and came to the school, but didn't realize he was carrying the weapon because he carries it all the time for protection. Freeman told police he didn't intend to harm anyone.

(WHNT) -- HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A brawl at a buffet surprised diners and one police officer.

Police say two people were boiling mad as they were waiting for crab legs.

"Literally, as I sat down and maybe took two bites out of my plate," Huntsville police officer Gerald Johnson recalled.

For Johnson, apparently, some Friday evening peace and quiet was too much to ask.

"There's a woman who's beating a man. People are moving around, plates are shattering everywhere," Johnson continued.

No sooner had he dished up a plate at Meteor Buffet off Memorial Parkway, Johnson says a fight was happening in the food line.

"It's not something you typically hear, if you can imagine a fencing match," Johnson said.

The sound Johnson was hearing was tongs clashing. The Meteor Buffet diners were eagerly awaiting the next tray of crab legs coming out of the kitchen.

"Everyone was saying, 'They cut me in line. She cut me in line. He cut me in line. I was here first,'" Johnson said.

Police arrested John Chapman and Chequita Jenkins who was eating at the buffet with her kids.

"They'd been waiting there for the crab legs for a good 10, 20 minutes. When they finally came out, it's very heated. Especially if someone is taking more than their fair share," Johnson recounted.

Officer Johnson said after talking with Chapman and Jenkins, they admitted their tempers got the best of them. Chapman is facing disorderly conduct, Jenkins is charged with third-degree assault. Both people could end up paying a few hundred dollars in fines, well above the $10.58 per plate charge at Meteor Buffet.

Chapman suffered a cut to his head in the restaurant fight. Jenkins was not hurt. Chapman will next be in court on March 21st.
