MEXICO CITY (AP) — A city councilor from the Mexican border city of Reynosa has been arrested at a checkpoint in Texas after U.S. border patrol agents found about 93 pounds (42 kilograms) of cocaine in her car, prosecutors said.

On Wednesday, Denisse Ahumada was still listed as one of about 20 members of the Reynosa city council.

Court records show she was arrested on June 10 at an inland security checkpoint in Falfurrias, Texas after an x-ray inspection of her SUV showed anomalies in the door panels & the seats. Border Patrol agents found 42 packages wrapped in duct tape & foil, each containing about a kilogram of cocaine.

Ahumada told agents she was supposed to have delivered the drugs to San Antonio, Texas. She also told agents she had carried such shipments before.

Local media reported Ahumada was part of the conservative opposition National Action Party, or PAN. But in a statement Tuesday, the PAN office in the northern border state of Tamaulipas denied she was a member or supporter of the party, and condemned drug smuggling.

State party leader Luis René Cantú said Ahumada had run for office on the Green party ticket and later asked to join the PAN, but later lost contact with the party.

Reynosa is a violent border city across from McAllen, Texas that has long been dominated by factions of the Gulf cartel.

Four suspects have been arrested for the involvement of the case of the Lousiana State University student who was hit and killed by a vehicle in Baton Rouge earlier this month.

According to East Baton Rouge Police Department, a 17-year-old juvenile and Kaivon Deondre Washington, 18, are being accused of third-degree rape.

Two other men, Everette Lee, 28, and Casen John Carver, 18, are being accused of being principles to the crime. This means that they were present during the incident but were not directly involved.

According to police, Madison Brooks, 19, was leaving a bar in Tigerland around 1 a.m. when she entered the vehicle of the four suspects.

Washington and the unnamed juvenile are accused of raping her in the rear seats, while the other two suspects were in the front seat. The four suspects then dropped her off at a random location which led to her being hit by a vehicle around 3 a.m. on Burbank Drive near Pelican Lakes Parkway.

Deputies say Brooks' toxicology reports show her blood alcohol content (BAC) was .319g%. According to the University of Notre Dame Research, the effects of a BAC between .350g% and .399g% are listed as alcohol poisoning. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was also found in her system.

A Michigan man is being sued after a technician who didn't know how to drive a stick shift accidentally killed a mechanic from behind the wheel of the defendant's car.

Although Sergio Enrique Diaz-Navarro wasn't behind the wheel of the Jeep Wrangler on that day in March 2020, the family of the employee who was killed is suing him for negligence & is hoping to receive more than $15 million in damages.

Jeffrey Hawkins, 42, a father of four who worked as a mechanic, was killed when 19-year-old Daniel Thompson, a lube technician, attempted to operate the vehicle after the service was finished. Thompson started the vehicle because he was trying to ensure there were no leaks in the car's filter, but the car then lunged forward & crushed Hawkins.

"Thompson reached into the vehicle and pressed brake with his right foot, keeping his other foot on the floor," read the court documents. "He pressed the start button. When the vehicle did not start, he took his foot off the brake & depressed the clutch pedal. He again hit the start button. This time the Jeep started. He removed his foot from the clutch, still standing outside the vehicle. The vehicle lurched forward."

Hawkins's family also filed a lawsuit against Thompson in 2021.

Michigan law makes it difficult for a coworker to sue a boss over that because it occurred at work — despite the fact that the Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership owner hired someone who didn't have a driver's license or know how to drive a car with manual transmission. The family is left with little recourse other than targeting Diaz-Navarro, whose insurance company has already doled out $100,000.

Diaz-Navarro is considered liable for giving his keys to the dealership because of a vicarious liability law in the state that holds that owners are automatically liable for the negligence of drivers — a principle that could extend to mechanics, valet attendants & others.

"When you hand your car over to anybody, including the valet or the person at the service desk at your local dealership, you better be able to trust that person," a lawyer for Diaz-Navarro said.

In a separate lawsuit, Diaz-Navarro won indemnity from the dealership, meaning that the dealership will ultimately be on the hook for the bill if a court determines that he was indeed liable. The dealership is expected to appeal that decision.

"So in reality, the owner is going to be held responsible, but the dealership’s insurance company is paying," Femminineo said.

The case involving the lawsuit against Diaz-Navarro will head to trial at the end of May.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - She was awarded an honorary Pulitzer for filming the murder of George Floyd by then Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin, now Darnella Fraizer is mourning the death of her uncle, Leneal Frazier, killed Tuesday morning when a Minneapolis police squad car pursuing a vehicle believed to have been involved in multiple robberies struck the car he was driving.

In a Facebook post, Darnella wrote, "I honestly can’t believe I’m making this post right now...I’m so hurt...nothing feels real. I woke up to the most horrible news," going on to write, "MY uncle... Another Black man lost his life in the hands of the police! I asked my mom several times "he died??" I couldn’t accept what I was hearing and still can’t. Some things just take time to process."

Family says Leneal was heading to his girlfriend’s house when the MPD squad struck his car.

Early Tuesday morning, Minneapolis police officers were pursuing an armed robbery suspect in the area of North 41st Avenue and North Lyndale Avenue. While traveling northbound, the squad struck Leneal's car in the intersection. The squad then went into the southbound lane and struck another uninvolved car. Both the officer and Leneal were taken by ambulance to North Memorial.

Leneal died of his injuries. The officer was injured but is expected to survive.

"This is not fair, not right," Leneal’s daughter, Lanesha Frazier said. "I didn’t expect that to be my father. I’m really grieving because all these police out here, they’re not watching what they’re doing… they need to watch what they’re doing, innocent people out here being hurt."

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs.

Video After The Jump

(CNN) -- Forensic tests have found the blood of Michael Brown on the gun, uniform and police cruiser belonging to Officer Darren Wilson, who fatally shot the unarmed teen two months ago in Ferguson, Missouri, The New York Times reported.

12351166481?profile=original

The revelation, provided by unnamed government officials familiar with a federal civil rights investigation, marked the first public account of Wilson's testimony to investigators.

12351166692?profile=original

That it could potentially serve as exculpatory evidence -- or at the very least, used by Wilson's supporters to back the officer's account of what transpired on Canfield Drive on August 9 -- immediately drew suspicion and anger from leading activists who portended an ominous reaction from Brown supporters.

"This is clearly constructed and contrived to justify the killing of Mike Brown," Ferguson resident Pam Peters told CNN affiliate KTVI.

Angela Whitman, a Ferguson resident who was among activists meeting with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder there in August, found the newspaper account of Wilson's testimony "so hard to believe."

She said the report addressed only the initial encounter and not the subsequent fatal shooting, when some witnesses said Brown was surrendering with his hands up. But police said Wilson shot Brown after the teen attacked him and tried to take his gun.

Whitman speculated that the account was leaked to the newspaper because a St. Louis County grand jury investigating the teen's killing is now leaning toward not indicting the officer.

"If [Michael Brown] struggled with this officer, this still does not justify why this child is not alive," Whitman said. "If this young man did this, and struggled, that means he got free. And then witnesses said he turned around with his hands up. This kid should still be alive.

"There was speculation probably about a week ago, that Wilson will not be indicted, and that he is going to get off. People are more angry now. There's more anger now than when the incident happened," Whitman continued.

Whitman worried whether the revelation would provoke another round of racially charged protests akin to the violent demonstrations immediately after Brown's August 9 death in the St. Louis suburb. Wilson is white; Brown was black.

12351167291?profile=original

"This is not a black and white thing, this is about what's right and wrong. St. Louis is in trouble, because if this is what Darren Wilson said, and they believe him, St. Louis is going to burn," Whitman said.

"I'm so frustrated with this. It's all for political gain. It's become no longer about Mike Brown," Whitman added.

The officer's account

Wilson, 28, a resident of the St. Louis area, has stayed out of the spotlight since the incident, and until now, few details have emerged publicly about his side of the story.

Wilson told investigators he was trying to leave his car when Brown shoved him back in, the Times reported Friday night.

Once in, Brown pinned him in his car and tried to get his gun, which made him fear for his safety, the newspaper reported, citing unnamed government officials familiar with the federal civil rights case.

michael-brown-dead-photo.jpg?w=640&h=360

The officer told authorities that Brown hit him and scratched him repeatedly, leaving bruises on his face and neck, according to The Times.

Analyst: "Helpful testimony" for officer

CNN legal analyst Paul Callan said the new account appears to be "strong evidence" favoring the officer, but "the real focus on the case will shift to what happened outside of the car when Michael Brown ran away, according to many witnesses," Callan said.

"I think the focus will shift on the officer," Callan said. "He is not out of the woods yet, even though this is helpful testimony for him.

"The officer will claim here that because Michael Brown tried to kill him with his gun ... he was a danger to the public and to the officer in general," Callan said. "However, if, as some witnesses have said, Michael Brown turned with his hands up in a surrender gesture, well, then he's no longer a threat to anybody and he cannot be shot.

"The officer may be saying, well, that is not what's happening. He was running towards me and trying to tackle me and he constitutes a continuing threat to my safety. So it will depend on what the grand jury believes which is the accurate version," Callan said.

Gun fired twice in car

FBI forensic tests showed the gun was fired twice in the car, with one bullet hitting Brown's arm while the second one missed, the newspaper said.

In addition to Wilson's uniform and gun, forensic tests found the teen's blood on the interior door panel of his car, The Times said.

His account did not include an explanation on why he shot at Brown even after they got out of the car, according to The Times. A preliminary autopsy showed the teen was shot at least six times, including twice in the head.

Separate federal and local investigations are still ongoing, but the government officials said the evidence so far does not indicate that the officer violated any civil rights, The Times reported.

CNN cannot confirm the details of The Times' report.

A grand jury is considering whether Wilson should be tried on other charges.

What happened in the car mostly a mystery

Most of the accounts of Brown's shooting have focused on what happened outside the car -- on the street -- with conflicting narratives between both sides.

Dorian Johnson, 22, who was walking with Brown on the street when the shooting occurred, told CNN that the officer pulled up and told them to get on the sidewalk. They told him they were almost home, and would be off the street shortly.

1407937246000-DORIAN-JOHNSON.jpg

The officer drove forward, but stopped and backed up, almost hitting the pair, Johnson said.

"We were so close, almost inches away, that when he tried to open his door aggressively, the door ricocheted both off me and Big Mike's body and closed back on the officer," he said.

Witnesses' version a stark contrast

Still in his car, the officer grabbed Brown by his neck, but he tried to pull away as the officer pulled him toward him, Johnson said.

The officer drew his weapon and fired, hitting Brown, Johnson said. A bloodied Brown took off running, but the officer followed him and fired, according to Johnson.

Brown turned around with his hands up and told the officer he was unarmed, but the officer fired and the teen hit the ground, Johnson said.

Another witness, Tiffany Mitchell, has said she saw Wilson and Brown "tussling through the window" of the police cruiser.

Complete coverage of Ferguson shooting and protests

CNN's Nick Valencia contributed to this report.

Video After The Jump Washington State Troppers are "infuriated" today after they say a group of motorcyclists taunted an injured officer after causing him to crash his vehicle. Trooper Bryan Salyer, 46 says he saw the bikers going over 100 mph and started to chase them, but soon crashed after the motorcyclists intentionally cut him off according to King5. "Two of the bikes crossed over and intentionally cut the trooper off and slammed on their brakes," said Washington State Trooper Cliff Pratt. He says Salyer slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting them, which caused his car to hit a guard rail, then flip several times. "As he is looking up at them, thinking they would get off and help him out of this horrible situation, they got off their bikes at stood about 30 feet within him and started pointing and clapping, thinking it's a really funny incidence for themselves." says Pratt. However, a witness has come forward to tell a different story. Francisco Sanchez of Seattle, says he saw the bikers pass him at a high rate of speed. Soon after, the patrol car approached. "It was completely out of control," he said of the patrol car. "The car was just dancing. It hit the dirt and then cartwheeled like a cheerleader at nationals." Sanchez added that it didn't look like the bikers cut the car off, but he did confirm they taunted the officer after the crash. "They were excited. There was clapping and cheering, and a couple people got off their bikes to take pictures of the spectacle," Sanchez said. Salyer suffered a concussion, cuts, bumps and bruises in the crash. Police are still looking for the bikers.

CNN Reports Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- At least 132 people were killed and 520 wounded in twin suicide car bombings in central Baghdad Sunday, officials said -- the deadliest attack on civilians in Iraq this year. Two car bombs detonated in quick succession near Iraqi government buildings about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, as the Iraqi work week began, an Interior Ministry official said. Among the wounded were three American security contractors, the U.S. Embassy told CNN. The embassy would not give any more details. One of the bombs exploded outside Baghdad's governorate building. The second was outside the Justice Ministry, about 500 meters (1,600 feet) away. The Ministry of Municipalities and Public Works, which is about 50 meters from the Justice Ministry, also sustained severe damage. Plumes of smoke billowed from the sites of the attacks as victims fled, some with blood streaming down their faces. The streets were strewn with debris, including charred cars and chunks of concrete from damaged buildings. Some government buildings and others in the area were heavily damaged. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki surveyed the carnage shortly after the explosions. "The cowardly attack that took place today should not affect the determination of the Iraqi people from continuing their battle against the deposed regime and the gangs of criminal Baath party and the terrorist al Qaeda organization, who have committed the most heinous crimes against the civilians,'" al-Maliki said in a statement.

President Obama condemned the bombings as "outrageous attacks against the Iraqi people." In a White House statement, Obama called the bombings an attempt to "derail Iraq's progress" and pledged that the United States would be a "close friend and partner" as Iraq prepares for elections in early 2010. According to the statement, Obama spoke Sunday with al-Maliki and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani to express his condolences and reiterate U.S. support. The bombings came a day after the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, visited the country for the first time, and on the same day Iraqi officials were due to try to break a logjam holding up a new election law. Iraqis are supposed to go to the polls January 16, but parliament still has not passed the legislation, putting the balloting in limbo. The original deadline for parliament to pass the law was October 15, because Iraq's electoral commission says it needs 90 days to organize the process. Iraq's parliament failed Wednesday to reach agreement on a new electoral law, so the issue was supposed go to the Political Council for National Security on Sunday. It is not clear if the bombings will derail the political council's discussions.

Al-Maliki vowed to punish "the enemies of the Iraqi people who want to spread chaos in the country and derail the political process and prevent the parliamentary elections from taking place as planned" in January. He said holding the elections as scheduled would send the strongest response and message to the "enemies of the political process who are supported from the outside." Susan Rice, the ambassador, completed a two-day visit to Iraq on Saturday that included a condolence stop at the Foreign Ministry, where a huge bombing killed more than 100 in August. Security was tightened around Baghdad in the wake of the August 19 attack, which Iraqis dubbed "Bloody Wednesday." Blast walls were erected around the city and more checkpoints were set up. Iraqi journalists grilled officials on TV on Sunday, demanding to know how the new attacks could have taken place given the new security measures. An Iraqi official said the government was working to bolster security, but regional cooperation was needed to help fight suicide bombers. "We are calling on international and U.N. envoys to come and find out why Iraq is being targeted this way," said Ali al-Dabbagh, the Iraqi government spokesman. The spokesman said Iraq's setbacks are mainly caused by a fledgling intelligence that has "not been completed." The European Union condemned "this terrorist attack" and sent its condolences to the families of the victims, the Swedish presidency said in a statement. The Foreign Ministry, near the site of Sunday's blasts, was one of six places attacked on August 19. That day's attacks killed at least 100 people and wounded hundreds more. The area is close to the heavily guarded Green Zone that also houses the U.S. Embassy. The August attacks shook confidence in the abilities of Iraqi security forces who took over securing urban areas from U.S. troops over the summer. The Iraqi government has blamed Syria for harboring former Baath party members, who it said planned the August attacks, and asked for their handover. Relations between the two neighbors were strained after the bombings. Each withdrew its ambassador from the other's country. Security in the capital was tightened after the August bombings, and a decision to normalize the situation in Baghdad by taking down blast walls was reversed and checkpoints increased. Iraqi and U.S. officials have warned of a possible increase in violence ahead of the country's national elections.
