ORLANDO, Fla. – A known Orlando-area gang member was sentenced to more than seven years in a federal prison after pleading guilty to three weapons charges earlier this year.

Jacquavius Smith, known in rap music circles as Glokk9 or 9lokknin, was arrested last year for possessing a gun as a convicted felon.

An Orange County judge deemed him a danger to society and denied him bond.

In February, Smith was indicted on federal firearms charges.

He pleaded guilty to three counts in July, including possession of an unregistered firearm, using another person’s identity and committing a crime while on pretrial release.

According to court documents, Smith will serve 87 months in a federal prison, three years of supervised release and drug treatment.

He was also ordered to pay $10,416 in restitution.

Smith still faces racketeering charges in state court, where his trial is slated to begin in March 2022.

He also faces charges of attempted second-degree murder.

Investigators allege the rapper fired a gun into an Orlando home in July. A woman told detectives she was inside with her children at the time. No one was injured. Investigators said that Smith was targeting another rapper, with a witness telling detectives, “9IokkNine wants to be the only rapper coming from Orlando.”

Several months after the shooting, Orange County deputies said Smith was the target of a shooting between a rival gang outside the food court at the Mall at Millenia on Oct. 8, 2020.

CHICAGO - Local rapper G Herbo was accused Tuesday of lying to a federal agent, adding a third federal charge to an indictment that already includes allegations of fraud and identity theft.

Herbo, whose real name is Herbert Wright III, allegedly told a federal agent in November 2018 that he never knew or worked with rap promoter Antonio Strong, who was among five people indicted with him in December.

Strong identified himself as Wright's manager when he allegedly used stolen credit card information and IDs to pay for private jets, expensive meals & designer puppies beginning in March 2016, according to the indictment filed in the U.S. District Court in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Wright allegedly told a federal agent that he had no relationship with Strong, personal or professional, when in reality he paid Strong for work & "received valuable goods from Strong, including private jet charters, luxury accommodations & exotic car rentals," the prosecutor's office said.

He also allegedly had frequent conversations with Strong over the phone, via text and on Instagram, prosecutors said.

Wright faces up to five years in prison if convicted, along with three years of supervised release & a $250,000 fine.

The South Side native has been a staple in Chicago's drill scene since he was a teenager in the early 2010s, helping the local rap genre grow to international prominence alongside frequent collaborators like Chief Keef & Lil Durk.

Wright's last album, "PTSD," peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard charts in March 2020.

Though the rapper has been slapped with weapons & battery charges in recent years, he's most recently made headlines for his community outreach on the South Side, hosting food drives & back-to-school giveaways.

By all accounts Michael Vick has been a model citizen since being released from federal prison in May 2009 after serving 19 months for dog fighting.

With his remarkable comeback on the football field happening before our eyes, Vick is still trying to make things right off the field.

He helps mentor kids about the harm dog fighting causes. He also spends a lot of his free time working with The Human Society.

As part of his rehabilitation process Vick says he would like to own a dog again.

“I would love to get another dog again in the future. I think it would be a big step in the rehabilitation process for me,” Vick told TheGrio.com. “I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love, and my passion for animals.”

Prior to being convicted of dog fighting Vick was one of the nation’s most popular athletes. His # 7 jerseys were big sellers, he had big endorsement deals with Nike and Upper Deck, and a $100 million dollar contract with the Atlanta Falcons. He lost all of that and more. Vick became one of the most hated people on the planet.

He still struggles to come up with answers for why he did it. He thinks it could be a cultural thing.

I hate to use our culture as an excuse, but it is what it is and that’s what happened and that’s the way I thought about it growing up. This is just the way I was brought up. Nobody ever told me that it wasn't right,” he said.

Mike says he’s learned from his mistakes and is a “better person” now. He credits God with helping him turn his life around and hopes people will give him a second chance.

Do you think Vick has reached a point where it would be ok for him to own a dog again?

The recent spate of violence was sparked by the arrest of high-ranking drug cartel member Arnoldo Rueda Medina.

CNN Reports A federal judge ordered 10 municipal police officers arrested Saturday in connection with the slayings of 12 off-duty federal agents in southwestern Mexico, the attorney general's office said. The federal officers' bodies were found Tuesday on a remote highway in Michoacan state, where at least 18 federal agents and two soldiers have been killed since July 11 due to drug-related violence. Video from the scene showed three signs, known as narcomensajes, or narcomessages, left by the killers. They all stated the same thing: "So that you come for another. We will be waiting for you here." The officers arrested Saturday are on the police force in the city of Arteaga. Mexican President Felipe Calderon, whose home state is Michoacan, responded to the violence by dispatching 1,000 federal police officers to the area. The infusion, which more than tripled the number of federal police officers patrolling Michoacan, angered Michoacan Gov. Leonel Godoy Rangel. He called it an occupation and said he had not been consulted. Authorities said Wednesday they were searching for the governor's half-brother, who they say is a top-ranking member of La Familia Michoacana drug cartel. The cartel is blamed for most of the recent violence in the state. The governor's brother, Julio Cesar Godoy Toscano, was elected July 5 to the lower house of Congress. The governor has publicly urged his brother to surrender. There were no reports of his apprehension as of late Saturday. The sudden spike in violence followed the arrest July 11 of Arnoldo Rueda Medina, described as a high-ranking member of La Familia. La Familia members attacked the federal police station in Morelia to try to gain freedom for Rueda shortly after his arrest, authorities said. When that failed, cartel members attacked federal police installations in at least a half-dozen Michoacan cities. Under Mexican law, the officers arrested Saturday will be held for 40 days while officials determine whether to formally charge them.

CNN Reports Plainclothes investigators sent to test security at federal buildings in four U.S. cities were successful in smuggling bomb components through guard posts at all 10 of the sites they visited, according to a government report. A GAO report cites lax security in federal buildings after investigators got bomb compenents past guards. The investigators then assembled the bombs in restrooms and freely entered numerous government offices while carrying the devices in briefcases, the report said. The buildings contained offices of several federal lawmakers as well as agencies within the departments of State, Justice and Homeland Security, which is responsible for safeguarding federal office buildings. CNN obtained the report late Tuesday, ahead of its expected release Wednesday at a hearing of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. The Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, conducted the tests to check on the effectiveness of the Federal Protective Service .The FPS protects federal buildings by having about 1,200 federal law enforcement officers oversee an army of 13,000 private security guards. In a videotape obtained by CNN, a covert GAO inspector places a bag containing bomb components on an X-ray machine conveyor belt and then walks through a magnetometer at an unidentified federal building. Unlike some covert tests that use simulated explosives, the GAO used actual bomb components in the test and publicly available information "to identify a type of device that a terrorist could use" to damage a building. Watch undercover agent smuggle bomb » "The (improvised explosive device) was made up of two parts -- a liquid explosive and a low-yield detonator -- and included a variety of materials not typically brought into a federal facility by an employee or the public," the report says. Investigators obtained the components at local stores and over the Internet for less than $150, the report says. After the components were smuggled into the building and assembled, the GAO says, it took steps to ensure the device would not explode. But to demonstrate the device's destructive power, the GAO videotaped the detonation of several devices at a remote site. The GAO also released a photograph of a guard asleep at his post and detailed an instance in which a woman placed an infant in a carrier on an X-ray machine while retrieving identification. Because the guard was not paying attention and the machine's safety features had been disabled, the infant was sent through the X-ray machine, according to the report. The FPS dismissed the guard, who, as a result, sued the agency for failing to provide X-ray training. FPS lost the suit because it could not prove that the guard had been trained, the report says. All of the buildings involved in the test were "Level IV" buildings, meaning they housed more than 450 federal employees and have a high volume of public contact. The GAO has declined to identify the specific buildings "because of the sensitivity of some of the information in our report," the report says. The GAO said that FPS has taken several steps to improve oversight of the guard program in response to the GAO investigation. Specifically, the FPS has authorized overtime to conduct guard post inspections during off-business hours and is conducting its own tests. It has also moved to standardize inspections of guard posts across the country. In prepared testimony, FPS Director Gary Schenkel said, "It was apparent FPS was experiencing some serious challenges" when he arrived at the agency in early 2007. Schenkel says the FPS has been focused on "standardizing its practices." "When GAO presented its findings several weeks ago, we took it very seriously," Schenkel's testimony says. Within three hours of learning of the issued identified by the GAO, he increased the number of inspections of guard posts, he said. He has also established a team to "aggressively attack" the challenge of overseeing the contract guard program, he said. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Connecticut and chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, called the test results "simply unacceptable." "We knew that the FPS was a troubled agency, but that GAO could penetrate security at these buildings and make bombs without detection is truly shocking," he said. The security lapses "show a disturbing pattern by the Federal Protective Service of poor training, lapsed documentation, lax management, inconsistent enforcement of security standards and little rigor," added Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the committee's ranking member. The GAO report concludes that FPS "does not fully ensure that its guards have the training and certifications required to stand post at federal facilities." The GAO says it visited six of the 11 FPS regions and that in all six regions, FPS did not require some of its guards to complete the mandatory 128 hours of training. In one region, FPS "has not provided the required 8 hours of (X-ray) or magnetometer training to its 1,500 guards since 2004," the report says. The report also says FPS does not have a national guidance on how often FPS inspectors should check on the contract guards. In several instances when inspectors have checked on guards, they found "instances of guards not complying with post orders." In one case, the GAO report says, a guard was caught using government computers to manage a for-profit adult Web site. David Wright, president of a union which represents about 1,000 federal employees, said the study shows the FPS is in a "pretty sad state." "I do not believe that adequate training is provided (for the contract guards)," he said. "I think it is very unequal -- kind of a mish-mash across the country. In some cases we leave training up to the contractor, and (it) clearly is not sufficient." Wright says his immediate goal is to have federal officers -- not contract guards -- protect Level IV buildings, and ultimately to have them protect Level III buildings as well.

TimesOnline Reports A powerful Mexican drug cartel has unleashed a killing spree against the authorities in a challenge to the leadership of the President in his home state. The bodies of a dozen federal anti-drug agents were found on a mountain highway in Michoacán, the home state of Felipe Calderón, on Monday. The killing of the agents was the worst loss of life in a single attack since President Calderón took office in 2006, taking the war between the narcotics gangs and the Government into uncharted territory. Their murders were the boldest of at least ten reprisal attacks since Arnoldo Rueda Medina, nicknamed La Minsa, was arrested on Saturday. He is reputedly the second-in-command of La Familia cartel in Michoacán. The surge in violence marks a potential shift in Mexico’s drug wars, which have claimed 11,000 lives during the presidency of Mr Calderón, who ordered the army to intervene. Ciro Gomez Leyva, a columnist for the newspaper Milenio, described the killings as a Mexican version of the Tet offensive in Vietnam in 1968. “In the war against the narcos, Saturday, July 11, seems like a kind of Tet offensive, the synchronised action by South Vietnamese guerrillas and the North Vietnamese Army against US troops at the end of January 1968 that, despite being characterised as a military disaster, created the perception that the otherwise invincible US Army would never win in Vietnam,” he wrote. The perception that the war against drugs is being lost is pervasive. A poll published in Milenio said that only 28 per cent of Mexicans believed that the Government was winning, and more than half thought that it was losing. Mr Calderón said: “The criminals will not be able to intimidate the federal Government. In this battle we will not give up, we will not hesitate, because what is at stake is Mexico’s peace and safety.” Michoacán, on the Pacific coast, has become a battleground because it controls routes into the United States. It is also one of Mexico’s main producers of marijuana, opium poppies and synthetic drugs. Mr Rueda was arrested in the Michoacán capital, Morelia. He is allegedly the right-hand-man to the reputed boss, Nazario Moreno Gonzalez, known as El Mas Loco, or the Craziest One. Within hours of the arrest, gunmen from La Familia, armed with rifles and grenades, ambushed federal forces in seven cities. Some of the attacks took place near tourist sites such as the arts-and-crafts centre of Patzcuaro and Zitacuaro, which is famous for its monarch butterflies. In the most brutal attack, eleven men and one woman agent were abducted while off duty. Their bodies were found stacked on the highway with death threats that read: “La Familia, join its ranks or leave” and “Let’s see if you try to arrest another one”. La Familia has penetrated the power structure, allegedly obtaining protection from police and politicians. Seven mayors, one former mayor and a state prosecutor are being held after a federal police sweep of allegedly corrupt politicians in May. An arrest warrant has been issued for Julio Godoy, the half brother of a state Governor. Mr Godoy was elected to Congress last week as a member of the Democratic Revolution Party. Analysts said that the killings were not necessarily a sign of the cartel’s strength, but were an escalation of the battle to contain them. “This marks an important change in the drug war in that they are attacking federal forces directly,” Jorge Chabat, a drug expert, said. “It also suggests the capture of this person has affected the operations of the cartel. It was a major blow and this is a reaction out of weakness, not strength.” In separate Mexican drug violence, six gunmen were killed on Tuesday in the northern city of Monterrey. Gunmen killed the mayor of Namiquipa in Coahuila and four police officers were kidnapped in Piedras Negras. In Tabasco state on the Gulf coast, prosecutors charged five alleged Gulf cartel hitmen with allegedly killing two policemen and eighteen of their relatives in February and May. A drugs trade worth billions and severed heads on the dance floor • Every year Mexican cartels smuggle illegal drugs worth about $40 billion (£24 billion) into the United States, the world’s biggest market for narcotics. Mexico is a major source of heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana — and a key transit country for the vast amounts of cocaine that are transported over the border • In 2008, 6,000 people died in drug violence in Mexico, according to President Calderón — almost double the 3,042 deaths that were recorded in 2007 • About 95 per cent of the killings were carried out using firearms from the US. Most of the drug violence takes place in a few cities near the US border, with drugs and people being trafficked to the north, and weapons to the south • In December 2006, Mr Calderón announced the deployment of 36,000 troops to work with the federal police to fight the drug trade in nine states. The police are widely accused of corruption • 53 per cent of Mexicans think the Government is losing the war with the drug cartels, according to a 2008 poll in a Mexican newspaper • La Familia cartel achieved notoriety in 2006 when a member walked into a bar and threw five severed heads on to the dance floor Sources: Reuters, Council on Foreign Relations

HAWAIIAN GARDENS - Among the 147 Hawaiian Gardens gang members and associates named in five separate federal indictments, some 49 remained at large Friday, authorities confirmed. The search, however, will continue, federal and local authorities vowed. "Operation Knockout has led to federal indictments against 147 gang members, making it the largest gang sweep in U.S. history," United States Attorney Thomas P. O'Brien said Thursday when the indictments were unsealed and the results of the pre-dawn raid were shared with media. During Thursday's operation, a total of 88 defendants were arrested on federal and state charges. Of the 88 arrests, 63 were identified in one of five federal indictments. With 35 defendants already in custody, there are now 98 people ready to be prosecuted in federal court and, if convicted, who will serve at least 85percent of their terms scattered among 118 federal facilities across the country, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. The remaining 49 defendants named in the federal indictments are either fugitives being sought by authorities or individuals who investigators are working to identify and additional arrests are expected in this case, said Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office. Some of those being sought are believed to be in the area while others are suspected to be out of state and out of the country, authorities said. The indictments and subsequent roundup in Hawaiian Gardens - which included 1,400 law enforcement members from federal, state and local jurisdictions - were the culmination of almost four years of investigation into the tiny town's oldest and most notorious gang, authorities said. Varrio Hawaiian Gardens waged a racist campaign to eliminate black people from the community through attempted murders and other crimes, according to the federal racketeering indictments unsealed Thursday. The indictments detailed numerous alleged incidents, including a charge that George Manuel Flores, the lead defendant in the RICO indictment and a longtime member of the gang, allegedly ordered the murder of another gang member who was believed to be cooperating with law enforcement. Flores also allegedly provided a young gang member with a weapon and instructed him to shoot African-Americans who lived nearby, according to the main indictment. Included in the gang's plotting was the murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Ortiz, who was shot in the head in June 2005 by a VHG member while Ortiz was investigating the attempted murder of a black man in the city, O'Brien said Thursday. It was the cowardly slaughter of Ortiz - a newlywed and father of two sons - that prompted investigators from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department to the FBI to launch "Operation Knockout," O'Brien said. Gang experts and investigators testified at length about the local gang's efforts to remove all black residents from the community during the 2007 trial for the killing of Deputy Ortiz. Convicted killer Jose Luis Orozco was found guilty of Ortiz's murder in the 2007 trial. Ortiz had been investigating the attempted murder of a black man by Orozco when Orozco shot the deputy while hiding behind a door. The victim, who was hired to do some yard work and fix up a vacant rental property, was targeted by Orozco simply because of his race and because he was in Hawaiian Gardens, witnesses testified. Orozco is awaiting execution on death row. Source:presstelegram.com
