7 sheriff’s deputies in central Virginia were arrested and charged with second-degree murder Tuesday in the death of a Black man who prosecutors say was fatally “smothered” while in custody.
Irvo Otieno, 28, died on March 6 at a state mental health facility during the intake process as he was being transferred from a Henrico County jail.
In court Wednesday, Dinwiddie County Commonwealth’s Attorney Ann Cabell Baskervill, said Otieno was in handcuffs & leg irons & was held on the ground for 12 minutes by all 7 deputies.
“They smothered him to death,” she said. “He died of asphyxia due to being smothered.”
She said the incident was captured on video that is “extremely clear, extremely alarming.”
The video is 12 minutes long and shows “deliberate & cruel treatment,” she added.
“The family is grief stricken after learning of the brutal nature of Irvo’s death & his inhumane treatment in the hours preceding his death,” Mark Krudys, the attorney for Otieno’s family, told CNN. “The public & experienced mental-health professionals alike, will be deeply disturbed when the facts of this case are fully made known.”
The case comes as law enforcement use of force has been under scrutiny nationwide, particularly as it relates to violence against Black people.
The 7 deputies who were charged were identified as Randy Joseph Boyer, Dwayne Alan Bramble, Jermaine Lavar Branch, Bradley Thomas Disse, Tabitha Renee Levere, Brandon Edwards Rodgers, & Kaiyell Dajour Sanders.
All 7 are slotted to appear before a grand jury on March 21.
A Hyundai supplier used child labor in a plant that supplies parts to the Korean automaker’s Montgomery factory.
Reuters is reporting that children as young as 12 have been recently employed at SMART Alabama in Luverne, which has supplied parts for Hyundai since 2003.
The story of the children came to light following the February 3 disappearance of a 14-year-old Guatemalan migrant child in Alabama, the news service stated.
The child was later found safe in Athens, Ga.
According to Reuters, the child & her 2 brothers, aged 12 & 15, all worked for the plant. After the publicity generated by the February disappearance case, SMART reportedly dismissed several underage workers, according to former employees.
Alabama & federal laws restrict minors under age 18 from working around dangerous machinery, while Alabama law requires children 17 and under to be enrolled in school.
SMART, in a statement, said it follows federal, state & local laws & “denies any allegation that it knowingly employed anyone who is ineligible for employment.”
Josh Duggar has been sentenced to 12 and a half years behind bars after being found guilty in his child porn trial.
As we reported, the "19 Kids and Counting" star was found guilty on one count each of receiving and possessing child pornography. According to prosecutors, some of those images were minors under the age of 12.
The possession charge was vacated because of an agreement between Duggar's legal team and the court, so he was only sentenced for the receiving child porn charge.
Duggar's legal team have previously stated they'll appeal.
The trial went on for two weeks and featured the testimony of digital forensic analysts and other witnesses. One family friend claimed Duggar confessed to molesting children, during tearful testimony.
You'll recall ... the feds raided his office at the car dealership where he worked in Arkansas, back in November 2019. Federal agents seized his computer, his iPhone and MacBook from inside the RV.
Duggar's lawyers asked the court to send him to prison for five years.
Tony Yayo came through for his first VladTV interview in some years, which he acknowledged at the start of this clip. From there, Yayo spoke about growing up in South Jamaica, Queens, near 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks. Tony detailed how he got in the streets after his parents divorced when he was around 15-16, but he pointed out that 50 Cent had already been in the streets since he was 12. This led Yayo to share stories about 50 Cent having their block on lock, and he also shared a story of a motorcycle police chase that 50 Cent had.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Southern California man died nearly 2 years ago as he screamed “I can’t breathe” while multiple officers restrained him as they tried to take a blood sample.
Edward Bronstein, 38, was taken into custody by California Highway Patrol officers on March 31, 2020, following a traffic stop. Bronstein died less than 2 months before George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis as he, too, repeatedly told officers “I can’t breathe.”
A nearly 18-minute video, taken by a CHP sergeant at the Altadena station, was released Tuesday after a judge’s order to make it public. Bronstein’s family has filed a federal lawsuit against the officers, alleging excessive force & a violation of civil rights. The family is also calling for the officers to be criminally charged by the Los Angeles County district attorney.
The LA County coroner’s office ruled Bronstein’s cause of death as “acute methamphetamine intoxication during restraint by law enforcement.”
“When the nation was in an uproar over the George Floyd tragedy, we had no idea this had also happened to Mr. Bronstein,” said Luis Carrillo, an attorney for Bronstein’s family.
A spokesperson for the LA County District Attorney’s Office said “the matter remains under review.”
“In my view the officers demonstrated a callous disregard for the value of human life and their actions should be investigated as potentially being criminal conduct,” said Bowling Green State University criminal justice professor Philip Stinson.
Family members say Bronstein was terrified of needles & believe that’s why he was reluctant to comply with the CHP initially as they tried to take a blood sample. In the video, an officer tells Bronstein they have a court order — an assertion that Carrillo doubts was true.
Several officers force the handcuffed man to the mat as he shouts “I’ll do it willingly! I’ll do it willingly, I promise!”, the video shows. At least 5 officers continue to hold him down — the lawsuit alleges they put their knees on his back — as he screams “I’ll do it! I’ll do it! I promise!”
One officer replies: “It’s too late.”
Bronstein begins screaming “I can’t breathe!” & “I can’t!” before the blood is taken, shouting it about 8 times & pleading for help as the officers continue to restrain him on the ground.
A California couple accused of decapitating their children pleaded not guilty to child abuse and murder charges on Wednesday.
Lancaster, Calif., parents Maurice Jewel Taylor Sr., 35, and Natalie Sumiko Brothwell, 45, were charged in connection with the deaths of their 12-year-old son, Maurice Jr., & 13-year-old daughter, Maliaka.
In December of 2020 Taylor Sr. was taken into custody and hit with two counts of murder involving the deaths.
He also received 2 felony counts of child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death involving his 2 other sons, ages 8 & 9 at the time.
Brothwell, who faces the same counts as Taylor Sr., was arrested last September at her home in Tucson, Ariz.
The older children were reportedly stabbed on Nov. 29, 2020 & not found by authorities until 5 days later.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office confirmed the children were decapitated.
It also reported per the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office that the younger children were shown the dead bodies of their older siblings and had to stay in their bedrooms with no food for days.
If convicted, Taylor Sr. faces a sentence of 57 years & 4 months to life behind bars. It is still unknown whether Brothwell will have the same sentence.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — The remaining members of a missionary group who were kidnapped 2 months ago have been freed, Haitian police & the group said Thursday.
The spokesman for Haiti’s National Police, Gary Desrosiers, confirmed that the remaining hostages had been released.
“We glorify God for answered prayer — the remaining 12 hostages are FREE!” Christian Aid Ministries said in a statement. “Join us in praising God that all 17 of our loved ones are now safe.”
The Ohio group said it hopes to provide more information later.
“We’re feeling great,” said Ron Marks, minister at Hart Dunkard Brethren Church in Michigan, whose members included some of the hostages.
Carleton Horst, a member of Hart Dunkard Brethren Church in Hart, Michigan, where five of the hostages are members, said church members received a text message Thursday morning from “someone connected to the situation” that all of the hostages had been released.
A mother & 4 of her children who belong to the congregation were among the hostages. Horst, who is friends with the family, said the church is rejoicing & he’s “elated that that portion of things is finally over, just praise the Lord for that.”
The missionaries were kidnapped by the 400 Mawozo gang on Oct. 16. There were 5 children in the group of 16 U.S. citizens & 1 Canadian, including an 8-month-old. Their Haitian driver also was abducted, according to a local human rights organization.
Two of the hostages were released in November & 3 more earlier this month. They were not identified, but members of the Hart congregation told local media in Michigan two were from Hart.
In addition to Michigan, the hostages are from Wisconsin, Ohio, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Oregon & Ontario, Canada.
“Today is the day we have been hoping for, praying for & working so hard to achieve,” said Congressman Bill Huizenga, whose western Michigan congressional district includes Hart. “I want to thank members of the hostage negotiation team for their diligence in securing the safe release of all the hostages. This is a great day for families in Michigan & across the nation who have been worried about the safety of their loved ones.”
The leader of the 400 Mawozo gang had threatened to kill the hostages unless his demands were met. Authorities have said the gang was demanding $1 million per person, although it wasn’t clear if that included the children.
It remained unclear Thursday whether any ransom was paid or what efforts led to their freedom.
Lil Wayne's never forgotten "Uncle Bob" -- the former New Orleans police officer who saved his life when he attempted suicide at age 12 -- and he's told him he's got his back for life if he ever needs anything.
"Uncle Bob," whose real name is Robert Hoobler, tells TMZ ... he saw Lil Wayne in 2019 when the rapper was in NOLA for a radio show, and that's when Wayne offered to provide Bob with financial support if he ever needed it, telling Bob all he has to do is say the word.
Bob says he hasn't taken up Weezy on the generous offer, but there have been talks about him joining Weezy's team in some sort of administrative capacity ... it's still TBD.
If you don't know ... Lil Wayne recently opened up about his mental health struggles as a kid and the incident with "Uncle Bob" when he was 12.
Lil Wayne now admits he intentionally shot himself in the chest -- for years, it was believed to be an accidental shooting -- and Bob was the cop who came to his rescue, refusing to let him die.
Now, all these years later, Wayne's still trying to pay back Bob. It's not the first time he's tried either -- you may recall his 2015 track "London Roads" in which he rapped about Bob saving him, and suggested the ex-cop had died.
But, Bob was still alive ... and says he got in touch with Wayne to let him know all reports or rumors of his death were greatly exaggerated.
Uncle Bob says Wayne was actually ready to pay for his funeral. Thankfully, that wasn't necessary.
An enraged British mom was sentenced to life in prison for killing her husband with a boiling mixture of water and sugar after she was told he had sexually assaulted her two children.
Prosecutors say Corinna Smith, 59, of Neston, near Liverpool, poured the superheated liquid over Michael Baines, 80, as he slept in their bed last year, according to reports. He suffered burns over one-third of his body and died weeks later from his injuries.
Prosecutors told a local court the sugar “made the liquid more viscous, thicker and stickier, so that it stays on the skin and causes greater damage.”
Smith, reportedly “livid” and “fuming” at news of her spouse’s alleged predatory behavior, mixed two kettles of water with three bags of sugar before attacking Baines in bed.
He died in the hospital five weeks later after repeated surgery and skin grafts.
Smith’s daughter claimed Baines had sexually abused her and her brother “for many years when they were children.” The brother, Craig, committed suicide in 2007, and had been imprisoned for an assault.
He had told his mother the man he attacked was a “pedophile” who had “touched him sexually,” according to reports.
She will serve a minimum of 12 years in jail before she can be considered for parole.
MARIANNA, Fla. (AP) — A former Florida sheriff’s deputy received a 12-year prison sentence for planting drugs inside drivers’ cars during traffic stops and then arresting them.
Former Jackson County deputy Zachary Wester, 28, did not speak at Tuesday’s hearing. He was convicted in May on 19 of 67 counts, including racketeering, official misconduct, fabricating evidence, perjury, false imprisonment & possession of controlled substances & drug paraphernalia.
Internal affairs investigators found the drugs hidden inside Wester’s patrol car in the summer of 2018, shortly before he was suspended. Prosecutors say it was ready-to-plant evidence that Wester used during his traffic stops. Body camera video also showed Wester holding what appeared to be baggies filled with drugs surreptitiously before searching cars after stopping them.
Prosecutors had to drop charges in nearly 120 cases involving Wester that occurred between 2016 & 2018 because of the accusations that he planted evidence.
Prosecutor Tom Williams had asked Circuit Judge James Goodman to sentence Wester to 15 years, saying he committed “an egregious breach of the public’s trust.”
“People voluntarily grant their government awesome powers they deem necessary for public safety & protection,” he said. “With that great power comes great responsibility. The defendant made choices to violate that trust and committed crimes against those people he was sworn to protect.”
Teresa Odom, one of Wester’s victims, told the judge the deputy had ruined her reputation and deprived her of time with her grandchild. Wester had stopped her for a defective brake light in 2018 & asked for permission to search her truck. She agreed. He claimed he found a baggie of methamphetamine in her purse — but body camera video showed him palming a bag before beginning his search.
Odom, who vehemently denied the drugs were hers when confronted by Wester, later pleaded no contest & received four years probation. That conviction has been thrown out.
“You robbed me of my credibility & being a mother & grandmother over the last two & a half years,” she said. “I wish you no ill will. But you’ll never know what you did to me until you have children of your own.”
Wester’s wife Rebecca & others begged Judge Goodman for leniency, saying he is a good, churchgoing man who volunteers in his community. More than 50 people sent letters to the judge in support of Wester.
“When that career ended, suddenly I watched a part of him and myself as well die,” Rebecca Wester said. “This blow is one that will not be overcome quickly, and honestly one we may never overcome. The Zach that is in the court before you today is a mighty man of God. Has been greatly missed, but the place he has been missed the most is in our home.”
Jackson County is located in the Florida Panhandle, northwest of Tallahassee.
Uber has been ordered to pay $1.1 million to a blind passenger after an independent arbitrator ruled that the company's drivers discriminated against her after refusing her rides on 14 separate occasions.
Lisa Irving, a San Francisco Bay Area resident, brought the claim against Uber in 2018 after “she was either denied a ride altogether or harassed by Uber drivers not wanting to transport her with her guide dog,” which she relies on.
Irving alleged that drivers left her stranded at night and caused her to be late to work, which may have contributed to her being fired.
Irving’s lawyers said their client suffered verbal abuse and intimidation, which did not stop after she brought her complaints to Uber.
"Of all Americans who should be liberated by the rideshare revolution, the blind and visually impaired are among those who stand to benefit the most,” Catherine Cabalo, one of Irving's attorneys, told the BBC in a statement. “However, the track record of major rideshare services has been spotty at best and openly discriminatory at worst."
"The bottom line is that under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a guide dog should be able to go anywhere that a blind person can go," she added.
Uber rejected Irving’s claims, insisting that its divers are “expected to serve riders with service animals and comply with accessibility,” but the arbitrator found that was not the case.
The investigation suggested that drivers were coached in ways to deny rides that would circumvent the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The arbitrator ruled that Uber was liable for violations of the ADA because of its “contractual supervision over its drivers and for its failure to prevent discrimination by properly training its drivers.”
The ADA prohibits businesses from denying transportation of a person with a guide dog.
Uber strongly disagreed with the ruling, saying that its team looked into each complaint and took appropriate action.
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has been sued by 4 more women who accuse him of sexual assault & harassment.
The lawsuits were filed Thursday night, hours after the NFL said it was investigating earlier allegations by 3 massage therapists who said the quarterback sexually assaulted them during massages.
The claims in the 4 new suits, which were filed in a Harris County state district court, mirror those in the 3 earlier cases. Each woman who sued Thursday worked in a spa or giving massages & claims that Watson exposed himself, touched them with his penis or kissed them against their will.
None of the 7 women, who have sued separately but are all represented by Houston lawyer Tony Buzbee, are identified by name in the lawsuits. They are each seeking compensatory & punitive damages, as well as court costs.
Watson, 25, has broadly denied that he acted inappropriately & said in a Tuesday statement that he looks forward to clearing his name. In a statement Friday, an attorney for Watson, Rusty Hardin, called the allegations “meritless.”
At a Friday news conference, Buzbee said he expects to file more lawsuits & his firm is vetting additional claims from women, including 1 involving an incident this month. None of his clients had filed police reports, he said, “but that is our next step.”
Buzbee said some of the massage therapists who came forward work at spas, some work from their homes, some work at deluxe hotels. All but one, who was flown in from Atlanta, were from the Houston area.
“These are, for the most part, licensed professionals. These are people that, many of them, are single mothers, either own their own shop or work in a spa,” while 3 clients are married and 1 is engaged, he said.
Hardin’s statement said he is “extremely proud to represent Deshaun Watson and wholly stand behind him.”
Watson is 1 of the league’s top quarterbacks & led the NFL in yards passing last season. He signed a 4-year, $156 million contract extension with the Texans last offseason, but he became unhappy with the direction of the team as Houston sunk to 4-12 & he requested a trade in January.

MELROSE, Fla. (CBS12) — A man from north Florida is accused of killing two young boys.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office arrested Mark Wilson Jr., 30, of Melrose, on two counts of first degree murder. Deputies said the murder weapons included a hammer and knife.
"He attacked these kids without mercy," said State Attorney R.J. Larizza.
On Wednesday morning, the mother of the two kids woke up and found them suffering from traumatic injuries in a common area of their home. A younger girl was home at the time. Their father was on the road as a long-distance truck driver.
By the time deputies arrived at the home, Robert Baker, 12, and Tayten Baker, 14, had died from their injuries.
Wilson is well-known to the family, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies said Wilson and his girlfriend lived in a shed on the Baker family's property. The family had moved up to the area from Polk County.
The State Attorney's Office says it will need to look at the evidence and discuss matters with the family but the death penalty in the case is under consideration.
