On August 9, 2008, we lost one of the great comedians of our generation.

Bernard McCullough aka Bernie Mac was 50 years old when he died from complications due to sarcoidosis.

In addition to doing stand up comedy, Bernie was also an actor who had hilarious roles in "The Bernie Mac Show," "Bad Santa," "Soul Men," "Head of State," "Ocean's Eleven," "Guess Who," "Mr. 3000" and more.

Rest in peace Bernie, you are truly missed.

Video After The Jump

Amid civil unrest over the deadliest Memorial Day weekend in five years, a dozen Chicago police officers lounged inside an already-broken-into campaign office for U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, eating popcorn, drinking coffee and sleeping, while looters damaged the businesses nearby.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the misconduct “disgusting” and apologized to the congressman for having to deal with such “incredible indignity.”

The shocking scene unfolded during the early morning hours of June 1, the mayor said. It was caught on the security cameras inside Rush’s office at 5401 S. Wentworth Ave. The office is part of a strip mall that also includes a health center, a nail salon, a cell phone store and other retail shops.

The mayor said the tapes show three supervisors, referred to as “white shirts” by the mayor and police superintendent, and 10 officers.

Lightfoot vowed to “take the strongest possible action” against the officers and showed photos at the news conference demanding they turn themselves in.

“You know who you are, you know what you did, don’t make us come find you,” Lightfoot said.

“Not one of these officers will be allowed to hide behind the badge … not in my city, not in your city,” she added.

Lightfoot fought back tears as she talked about being a black woman in America and fighting every day against injustice.

“The actions of these officers — the deplorable lack of responsibility to do their job at a time when the city and their fellow officers needed them most — their conduct will confirm the perception that too many people on the South and the West Sides [have] … that police don't care if black and brown communities were looted and burned,” Lightfoot said.

“If we don’t harness this moment to rethink what ‘serving and protecting’ means, we will never do it,” Lightfoot said. “This moment presents us with an opportunity not to nibble around the edges, but to be bold.”

AZUSA, Calif. (KABC) -- The novel coronavirus has hit one household in Azusa especially hard, sickening several members and killing the family patriarch.

Emotions are still raw for Luciana Ramirez. She lost her husband Guillermo to COVID-19 earlier this week.

"I'm really sad," Ramirez said. "I've been with him 30 years every day since I was 16 years old, and now I don't have him."

"I didn't even get to say goodbye," she added.

Guillermo was the patriarch and provider for a large family. Twelve people spanning three generations under one roof, and all of them tested positive for the virus.

The family says they wore gloves and masks, and washed their hands and even groceries, but it wasn't enough.

Ramirez said she started feeling unwell April 10 and thought she had the stomach flu.

One by one, they would get sick. The younger children never showed symptoms, but the adults did. On consecutive days, Ramirez watched as her son, her husband and her mother were taken away by ambulance.

Early Tuesday morning, doctors called and told her to rush to the hospital.

Ramirez's daughter, who lives elsewhere so she hasn't gotten sick, drove her to the hospital to be with her dying husband. Ramirez was in the backseat to prevent spreading the virus.

They didn't get there in time.

"She sat down and was crying and said, that's it, your dad is gone," said Guillermo's daughter Alexia Ramirez. "Your dad is gone. And I couldn't even hug her. I had to just watch her cry."

They are now devastated. Guillermo worked as a truck driver as the family's sole provider.

"Nothing's going to be the same without him," Alexia said. "He was our backbone. He supported our whole family. He worked hard and he loved to work."

"He literally would give you the last dollar out of his pocket," Luciana said.

The virus has already taken so much from the family, and it won't allow them to properly mourn.

"We can't even bury him," Luciana said. "We can't be together, we can't hug each other. It's devastating."

"I can't stress it enough that people take it serious," Alexia said. "I'll never see my dad again."

Guillermo was 47.

GoFundMe page has been established to help the family.

A new California policy allows the release of some criminals after arrests to limit the state's jail population amid the coronavirus.

Authorities arrested a man in California three times in 12 hours for stealing people's vehicles and other private property, but subsequently said they were forced to release him under the state's zero-bail policy enacted during the pandemic.

In April, the California Judicial Council created the new rule for misdemeanors and low-level felonies in an attempt to limit the jail population and the spread of COVID-19, according to local media.

This week, that rule prevented Glendora, California, police from detaining 24-year-old Dijon Landrum despite his multiple acts of theft.

On Wednesday morning, Landrum was first arrested and issued a citation for driving in a stolen vehicle while he was also in possession of other stolen property and illegal drugs. One hour after he was arrested, police arrested him again for walking around a neighborhood and stealing items from the front yards of peoples' homes.

Later that night, around 8:50 p.m., Landrum had stolen another vehicle, forcing police to chase him until his third eventual arrest. He was again given a citation and dismissed.

Local media have reported hundreds of confirmed coronavirus cases in California jails.

Over the weekend two more inmates died in prisons in Mississippi bringing the total number of deaths in 2020 to 12.

Officials with Management and Training Corporation, a Utah contractor that runs three prisons on behalf of the state of Mississippi said 38-year-old inmate Jermaine Tyler died in custody Saturday night at the Marshall County Correctional Facility. A spokesperson said there were no signs of foul play.

On Sunday, Parchman State Penitentiary announced the death of 26-year-old inmate Joshua Norman, who was found hanging in his one-man cell in the prison's Unit 29.

Gov. Tate Reeves said he recently visited Parchman, where nine prisoner deaths have taken place in the past month, some by hanging & some following altercations within the facility.

Reeves said Monday he has instructed the Mississippi Department of Corrections to shut down Unit 29, which he called "the most notorious unit."

More than two dozen inmates sued the state Jan. 14, saying understaffed prisons are “plagued by violence” & inmates are forced to live in decrepit & dangerous conditions. Entertainers Jay-Z & Yo Gotti are paying for the attorneys in the case, a spokesperson for the two confirmed. All of the plaintiffs have been inmates at Parchman.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. (WSB-TV) -- Former DeKalb County Police Officer Robert "Chip" Olsen was sentenced on Friday to 20 years, with 12 to serve in prison for shooting and killing a naked, unarmed, mentally ill military veteran.

Last month, a jury convicted Robert Olsen in the death of Anthony Hill but found him not guilty of murder. On Friday, Olsen learned his sentence.

Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson imposed the sentence after an emotion-packed hearing that lasted more than three hours. Her decision brings to a close a case that has lingered for more than four years and has been watched closely as a test of police accountability.

Olsen's defense lawyers had asked that the ex-cop serve five years behind bars; prosecutors had sought 30 years, with 25 to serve and five on probation.

Olsen, 57, was acquitted last month on two charges of felony murder for shooting and killing Hill on March 9, 2015. But the ex-cop was convicted on four lesser charges: aggravated assault, making a false statement to a police officer, and two counts of violating his oath of office.

At Friday's hearing, Hill's mother spoke of how Olsen's decision to shoot had shattered her family.

"I know Mr. Olsen didn't wake up that day and say I'm going to shoot Anthony Hill. But his decision to use lethal force is why I do not have my son. My only son," Carolyn Guimmo told the judge.

DeKalb prosecutor Pete Johnson said Olsen must be face the consequences for shooting an unarmed, naked man in broad daylight and then lying about it.

"That's appalling," Johnson told the judge.

But defense lawyer Don Samuel argued that Olsen represents no ongoing threat to the community and urged the judge to resist efforts to use the case to a make broader statement about police conduct.

"Think about mercy, compassion, forgiveness," Samuel said.

Hill, 26, had stopped taking his meds and had stripped off his clothes when he encountered Olsen in the parking lot of the Heights Chamblee apartment complex.

When Hill ran toward Olsen, ignoring his commands to stop, Olsen fired twice.

Olsen has maintained that he acted in self-defense.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Using a smoke bomb and a handgun, a hooded gunman dressed all in black opened fire during “college night” at a country music bar in Southern California, killing 12 people and sending hundreds fleeing in terror, authorities said Thursday. The gunman was later found dead.

Authorities said the motive for the attack Wednesday night was under investigation.

Patrons screamed in fear, shouted “Get down!” and used barstools to smash second-floor windows and jump to safety as gunfire erupted at the Borderline Bar & Grill, a popular hangout for college students. The dead included 11 people inside the bar and a sheriff’s sergeant who was the first officer inside the door, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

“It’s a horrific scene in there,” Dean said in the parking lot. “There’s blood everywhere.”

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that authorities had identified the gunman as Ian David Long. The official said the 29-year-old man deployed a smoke device and used a .45-caliber handgun.

The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The massacre was the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since 17 students and teachers were slain at a Parkland, Florida, high school nine months ago. It also came less than two weeks after a gunman killed 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. That, it turn, closely followed the series of pipe bombs mailed to critics of President Donald Trump.

Trump praised police for their “great bravery” in the California attack and said, “God bless all of the victims and families of the victims.”

The gunman was tall and wearing all black with a hood and his face partly covered, witnesses told TV stations. He first fired on a person working the door, then appeared to shoot at random at people inside, they said.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus and a passing highway patrolman were responding to several 911 calls when they arrived at the Borderline at about 11:20 p.m., the sheriff said. They heard gunfire and went inside.

Helus was immediately hit with multiple gunshots, Dean said. The highway patrolman pulled Helus out, then waited as a SWAT team and scores more officers arrived. Helus died early Thursday at a hospital.

By the time they entered the bar again, the gunfire had stopped, according to the sheriff. They found 12 people dead inside, including the gunman. It was not immediately clear how the gunman died, Dean said.

The shooting happened on college night. Two-step lessons in country dancing were being offered Wednesday at the Borderline, according to its website.

The bar, which includes a large dance hall with a stage and a pool room along with several smaller areas for eating and drinking, is popular with students from nearby California Lutheran University who enjoy country music. It is also close to several other universities, including California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, Pepperdine University in Malibu and Moorpark College in Moorpark.

Nick Steinwender, a Cal Lutheran student body president, told KTLA-TV he immediately started receiving messages about the shooting, and he and his roommate went to the scene to offer rides back to campus or moral support.

“It’s going to be a very somber day,” Steinwender said. “I know we don’t have all the details in yet, but you know, it just feels like it’s an attack on our community. You know, I think it’s going to be something that we’re going to have to come together and move past.”

When the gunman entered, people screamed and fled to all corners of the bar, and a few threw barstools through the windows and helped dozens to escape, witnesses said.

Video accessed by the AP showed law enforcement officers and vehicles speeding to the scene and people running from bar. Rapid-fire gunshots could be heard as officers crouched down behind a police vehicle, weapons drawn. Three people were seen carrying someone, and later paramedics applied bandages to the man, who has blood on his back.

Cole Knapp, a freshman at Moorpark College, said he was inside the bar when the shooting began, but he thought at first that it was “just someone with an M-80, just kind of playing a prank.” Then he said he saw the gunman, wearing a black beanie and black hoodie and holding a handgun.

“I tried to get as many people to cover as I could,” Knapp said. “There was an exit right next to me, so I went through that. That exit leads to a patio where people smoke. People out there didn’t really know what was going on. There’s a fence right there so I said, ‘Everyone get over the fence as quickly as you can,’ and I followed them over.”

He said a highway patrol officer was nearby who just happened to be pulling someone over.

“I screamed to him, ‘There’s a shooter in there!’ He was kind of in disbelief, then saw that I was serious,” Knapp said. He said he had friends who hadn’t been accounted for.

Tayler Whitler, 19, said she was on the dance floor with her friends nearby when she saw the gunman shooting and heard screams to “Get down!”

“It was really, really, really shocking,” Whitler told KABC-TV as she stood with her father in the parking lot. “It looked like he knew what he was doing.”

Sarah Rose DeSon told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that she saw the shooter draw his gun. “I dropped to the floor,” she said. “A friend yelled ‘Everybody down!’ We were hiding behind tables trying to keep ourselves covered.”

Shootings of any kind are very rare in Thousand Oaks, a city of about 130,000 people about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Los Angeles, just across the county line.

Helus was a 29-year veteran of the force with a wife and son and planned to retire in the coming year, said the sheriff, who choked back tears as he talked about the sergeant who was also his longtime friend.

“Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff’s sergeant who was totally committed,” Dean said, “and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives.”

AP journalists Andrew Dalton in Los Angeles, Michelle A. Monroe in Phoenix and Michael Balsamo in Washington contributed to this report.
