Lucy Letby has been handed 14 whole-life sentences for her crimes, which included the murder and attempted murder of 13 babies.

The judge imposed a whole-life order for each offence she committed, meaning she will spend the rest of her life in prison.

As we outlined earlier, she becomes only the fourth woman to be given the sentence in the UK, joining Rose West, Joanna Christine Dennehy and deceased moors murderer Myra Hindley.

West was infamously convicted of 10 murders in 1995 alongside her husband Fred West, while Dennehy stabbed three men to death and dumped their bodies in ditches outside Peterborough in March 2013.

Hindley, who murdered five children alongside partner Ian Brady, died behind bars in 2002.

This makes Letby one of just three women alive currently serving whole-life orders, and the fourth to be given the sentence in British history.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A Mexican woman who strangled a man to death while defending herself when he attacked & raped her in 2021 was sentenced to more than 6 years in prison.

The ruling against Roxana Ruiz spurred anger from experts & feminist groups who said it speaks to the depth of gender-based violence & Mexico’s poor record of bringing perpetrators of sexual violence to justice.

While the Mexico State court found Monday that Ruiz had been raped, it said the 23-year-old was guilty of homicide with “excessive use of legitimate defense,” adding that hitting the man in the head would have been enough to defend herself. Ruiz was also ordered to pay more than $16,000 in reparations to the family of the man who raped her.

In May 2021, Ruiz was working selling french fries in Nezahualcoyotl, one of the 11 municipalities in the Mexico State with an ongoing gender alert for femicides & another one for forced disappearances of women.

While having a beer with a friend, Ruiz, a Indigenous Mixteca woman & a single mother from the state of Oaxaca, met a man she had seen around the neighborhood. After hanging out, he offered to walk her home & later asked to stay the night because it was late & he was far from home.

Ruiz agreed to let him sleep on a mattress on the floor. But while she slept he climbed onto her bed, hit her, tore off her clothes & raped her, according to Ruiz’s legal defense. Ruiz fought back, hitting him in the nose.

He threatened to kill her & in the struggle that followed, Ruiz grabbed a T-shirt & used it to strangle her attacker.

In a panic, Ruiz put the man’s body in a bag & dragged it out to the street where passing police arrested her.

Rapper Fetty Wap was sentenced to 6 years in prison Wednesday for operating a large scale drug conspiracy that sold kilos of cocaine in New Jersey.

Fetty Wap, whose real name is Willie Maxwell, pleaded guilty in August to a conspiracy drug charge, which carries a mandatory 6-year prison sentence, admitting that he participated in a massive drug trafficking racket that moved drugs from the West Coast to Long Island.

During Wednesday's sentencing, Maxwell apologized, saying: "I hurt my community, people who look up to me. My family & myself. I am truly sorry for any pain I caused."

Judge Joanna Seybert, who presided over the sentencing had strong words for the rapper.

“Despite your background & all you overcame, you threw it all away," Seybert said.

Initially, Maxwell's plea during the summer in Central Islip came before U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven Locke, who had revoked his bond & sent him to jail 2 weeks ago. After the plea, he was returned to jail to await sentencing.

Locke revoked the rapper’s $500,000 bail, secured by property he owns in Georgia, after prosecutors said that Wap, whose real name is Willie Maxwell, threatened to kill a man during a FaceTime call in 2021, violating the terms of his pretrial release in his drug case.

The “Trap Queen” rapper was initially arrested in October 2021 on charges alleging he participated in a conspiracy to smuggle large amounts of heroin, fentanyl & other drugs into the New York City area.

Maxwell & 5 co-defendants were accused of conspiring to possess & distribute more than 100 kilograms of heroin, fentanyl & crack cocaine between June 2019 & June 2020. 2 co-defendants also have pleaded guilty & await sentencing.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A suburban Atlanta police officer has been charged with concealing the death of a teenage girl whose body was found 6 months after she went missing.

Gwinnett County police arrested Miles Bryant, 22, on Monday, charging him with 1 count of concealing the death of & 1 count of false report of a crime.

In a warrant application, police said Bryant dumped Susana Morales’ naked body in the woods near Dacula after the girl disappeared in July. The skeletal remains of the 16-year-old were found last week & identified based on DNA & dental records. Medical examiners are still trying to determine how she died.

The warrant says Bryant lives near Morales’ last known location. It says police suspect Bryant of rape, murder & other offenses, although the former officer has not yet been charged with those crimes.

In the warrant, police said Bryant falsely filed a police report claiming his gun was stolen after his car was broken into. That accounts for the charge of a false report of a crime.

Bryant had no prior relationship with the 16-year-old, warrants state.

Bryant remained in jail Tuesday after a judge denied him bail. The judge cited investigators’ belief that he is a danger to the community.

Bryant was until Monday a Doraville police officer. The city fired him after he was charged.

Morales went missing on the evening of July 26 when she was walking home from a friend’s house. Detectives have said they believe Morales got into a vehicle. Her body was found more than 20 miles from where she went missing.

D.L. Hughley says Donald Trump should be criminally charged over the Jan. 6 riots & he wants the former president charged with the death of a Capitol Police officer.

We got the comedian at LAX & he told our photog ... Trump would be staring at a slew of charges if he were Black, including manslaughter.

The way D.L. sees it ... Trump should be held responsible for the death of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died the day after being viciously attacked by the mob during the insurrection.

Trump has yet to be charged by the Justice Department. The Jan. 6 Committee voted to refer Trump for possible criminal charges ... so potential charges are on the table.

As we reported, the Jan. 6 panel feels four charges are warranted for Trump ... obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to make a false statement, conspiracy to defraud the U.S. & insurrection.

While D.L. admits Monday's announcement won't do much to convince people Trump's guilty -- he says everyone has already made up their minds -- he tells why he thinks Donald is a criminal.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A retired New York Police Department officer was sentenced on Thursday to a record-setting 10 years in prison for attacking the U.S. Capitol & using a metal flagpole to assault 1 of the police officers trying to hold off a mob of Donald Trump supporters.

Thomas Webster’s prison sentence is the longest so far among roughly 250 people who have been punished for their conduct during the riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The previous longest was shared by 2 other rioters, who were sentenced separately to 7 years & 3 months in prison.

Webster, a 20-year NYPD veteran, was the first Capitol riot defendant to be tried on an assault charge & the first to present a self-defense argument. A jury rejected Webster’s claim that he was defending himself when he tackled Metropolitan Police Department officer Noah Rathbun & grabbed his gas mask outside the Capitol on Jan. 6.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Webster, 56, to 10 years in prison plus three years of supervised release. He allowed Webster to report to prison at a date to be determined instead of immediately ordering him into custody.

“Mr. Webster, I don’t think you’re a bad person,” the judge said. “I think you were caught up in a moment. But as you know, even getting caught up in a moment has consequences.”

“The other victim was democracy, and that is not something that can be taken lightly,” Mehta added.

NEW YORK (AP) — A once-prominent neurologist convicted last month of sexually abusing patients killed himself Monday at a New York City jail.

Dr. Ricardo Cruciani, 68, was found unresponsive in a shower area at the Eric M. Taylor Center, a jail at the notorious Rikers Island complex..

Cruciani’s lawyer, Frederick Sosinsky, confirmed that his client had died.

Prosecutors said Cruciani groomed vulnerable patients by overprescribing painkillers, sometimes to treat serious injuries from car wrecks & other accidents.

Six women testified the sexual abuse often occurred behind closed doors during appointments in 2013 at a Manhattan medical center, where the doctor would expose himself & demand sex.

“I take comfort knowing he now faces another judge,” said Terrie Phoenix, who testified against Cruciani at trial.

He was also scheduled to go on trial next January on federal charges accusing him of abusing multiple patients over 15 years at his offices in New York City, Philadelphia & Hopewell, New Jersey.

Cruciani denied abusing women. In court, his lawyer questioned the credibility of his accusers.

Cruciani died while awaiting sentencing next month in a New York state case in which he was convicted of 12 counts, including predatory sexual assault, rape & sex abuse & acquitted on 2 other counts. He faced up to life in prison.

NBA player Iman Shumpert was arrested for having a "sizeable" amount of marijuana in his backpack at the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport on Saturday.

Officers responded to a potential drug violation call around 2:40 PM ... after TSA screeners found a plastic bag filled with a "green leafy substance" in Shumpert's bag, which he admitted was weed.

Cops say the substance weighed 6.12 ounces & tested positive for marijuana using a mobile test.

The report adds 32-year-old Shumpert -- who was set to board a Delta plane to Los Angeles at 3 PM -- expressed concern about missing his trip to visit his daughter ... but the responding officer informed him he would not be making that flight, as he was being placed under arrest for marijuana possession.

The report says the 2016 NBA champ was then placed in handcuffs & transported to the airport jail without incident.

The charge is classified as a "State Jail Felony" ... meaning Shumpert could face up to two years behind bars & a $10K fine, if convicted.

Cops also claim Shumpert -- who also won Season 30 of "Dancing With The Stars" -- had a Glock magazine and 14 9mm rounds in his bag ... although he didn't have a gun.

Shumpert last played for the Brooklyn Nets in 2020-21 ... and has also suited up for the Knicks, Cavaliers, Kings & Rockets over his decade-long career. He's averaging 7.2 points a game in his career.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will serve a six-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy following accusations of sexual misconduct.

Watson will not be fined.

Watson is eligible to return for the Browns' Oct. 23 game at Baltimore.

The NFL Players Association, in a statement Sunday night, made it clear that it will "stand by" Robinson's ruling & urged the NFL to do the same.

Sources close to Watson believe 6 games is too much, but they respect the decision.

Either side would have 3 days to submit an appeal in writing. In that case, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell or his designee "will issue a written decision that will constitute full, final and complete disposition of the dispute,'' per terms of Article 46 in the league's collective bargaining agreement.

Watson has been accused of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage sessions in civil lawsuits filed by 25 women. The encounters cited in the lawsuits took place between March 2020 & March 2021, while Watson was a member of the Houston Texans. One of the 25 lawsuits was dropped following a judge's ruling in April 2021 that the plaintiffs needed to amend their petitions to disclose their names. In June, Watson settled 20 of the 24 lawsuits he was facing; on Monday, he agreed to settle 3 of the remaining 4.

CONROE, Texas (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is dangling the prospect of pardons for supporters who participated in the deadly Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol if he returns to the White House.

“If I run and if I win, we will treat those people from January 6th fairly,” Trump said Saturday night during a rally in Conroe, Texas. “And if it requires pardons, we will give them pardons because they are being treated so unfairly.”

The offer represents an attempt by Trump to further minimize the most significant attack on the seat of government since the War of 1812. Participants smashed through windows, assaulted police officers and sent lawmakers and congressional staff fleeing for their lives while trying to halt the peaceful transition of power and the certification of rival Joe Biden’s victory.

More than 700 people have been arrested and charged with federal crimes in connection with the riot, marking the largest investigation in the Justice Department’s history. The tally includes more than 150 people charged with assaulting police officers, more than 50 charged with conspiracy, and charges of seditious conspiracy against the founder and leader of the far-right Oath Keepers militia group, and 10 other members or associates.

More than 100 police officers were injured, some critically, after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, following a “Stop the Steal” rally by Trump near the White House in which he falsely claimed Biden had won election through massive voter fraud.

Two Republican senators on Sunday criticized Trump’s suggestion of pardons as inappropriate. Maine Sen. Susan Collins, one of seven GOP senators who backed an unsuccessful bid to convict Trump on impeachment charges for his role in stoking the Jan. 6 riot, said it would be “very unlikely” she would support him if he ran in 2024.

“January 6th was a dark day in our history,” she told ABC’s “This Week.” “We should let the judicial process proceed.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., rejected Trump’s comments as sending a wrong message that it’s OK to defile the Capitol. For the Jan. 6 offenders, “I hope they go to jail and get the book thrown at them, because they deserve it,” Graham told CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

As president, Trump used his pardon power to pardon or commute the sentences of numerous political allies, friends and associates, including his former chief strategist, Steve Bannon; his former campaign chair, Paul Manafort; his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn; and a longtime friend and political ally, Roger Stone.

Trump has criticized the Democrat-led House for its ongoing investigation of the riot.

While his supporters overran the Capitol on Jan. 6, Trump ignored desperate pleas from allies to forcefully disavow the attack and has repeatedly praised those who participated in the protest.

“It was a lot of love there,” he said recently of those who attended the rally in an interview on Fox News. “Believe me, there was a lot of love and a lot of friendship and people that love our country.”

Trump, who was impeached by the House for his role in inciting the insurrection but acquitted by the Senate, has been teasing a third run for the White House in 2024.

(CNN) The Justice Department escalated its January 6 investigation by bringing seditious conspiracy charges against 11 defendants, including the leader of the Oath Keepers, Stewart Rhodes.

The latest accusations -- with a charge that had not previously been brought in the department's US Capitol attack prosecutions -- remove any sense that prosecutors believe the riot emerged from just a group of overzealous protestors, with new details about the planning and logistics alleged to have predated the Capitol breach.

The Justice Department until now had been careful not to push the idea of sedition, instead charging defendants affiliated with right-wing groups with conspiracy to obstruct the congressional proceeding on January 6. The seditious conspiracy charge carries the same possible consequence as an obstruction charge, but is rarely used, politically loaded and has been difficult for the Justice Department to use successfully against defendants in the past.

The new indictment brings to light planning the Oath Keepers are accused to have done ahead of the Capitol attack, as they allegedly recruited members, stocked up on weapons and organized to disrupt Congress' certification of the 2020 election. Prosecutors say they also continued to plot "to oppose by force the lawful transfer of presidential power" after the Capitol riot failed to block the electoral college vote, according to a Justice Department statement on Thursday.

One Oath Keeper claimed to travel to Washington, DC, for a scouting trip ahead of January 6, according to the indictment. The new court filings also detail accusations that the defendants stashed weapons at a Virginia hotel and that they were prepared to "rapidly transport firearms and other weapons into Washington, D.C." to support the efforts to stop the presidential certification vote.

The death of a Connecticut woman while on a date with a man she met online was caused by drugs & alcohol & has been ruled an accident, the state chief medical examiner’s office said.

The family of the 23-year-old woman, Lauren Smith-Fields, had complained authorities were not giving the investigation enough attention because she was Black.

Bridgeport police said Tuesday that its narcotics & vice division, with help from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, is investigating to see if any crimes were committed & if anyone should be charged.

“We are now refocusing our attention & efforts to the factors that (led) to her untimely death,” acting Police Chief Rebeca Garcia said.

Smith-Fields died Dec. 12 from “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of fentanyl, promethazine, hydroxyzine & alcohol” & her death was accidental, the medical examiner’s office said Monday. Fentanyl is a powerful opioid. Promethazine and hydroxyzine are antihistamines used to treat allergies.

She was found in her Bridgeport apartment after the man she was with called police to say he awoke to find her unresponsive.

Smith-Field’s family said police never notified them of her death, which they learned about more than a day later through a note left on her apartment door by her landlord. A detective eventually asked them to stop calling, they said. The family’s attorney, Darnell Crosland, has notified the city of his intent to file a lawsuit accusing police of failing to properly investigate.

“The police department has been racially insensitive to this family & has treated this family with no respect & has violated their civil rights,” Crosland wrote.

Crosland posted a statement on Twitter late Monday questioning the medical examiner’s finding that Smith-Fields’ death was an accident.
