Suicide (21)

One retired employee & 3 current members of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were found dead by suicide within a 48-hour period starting Monday.

The first death was reported at around 10:30 a.m. on Monday in Valencia, according to a statement from the department. Just over 2 hours later, a little after 12:50 p.m., detectives were called to a second death in Lancaster. At 5:40 p.m., they were again called, this time to a home in Stevenson Ranch.

At around 7;30 a.m. Tuesday morning, homicide detectives were sent to a hospital in Pomona, where a current employee was declared dead.

"Out of respect for their grieving families we will not be disclosing the names of the employees at this time," a statement said. "Homicide detectives and the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner will continue to investigate each incident independently."

Details surrounding the deaths remain unclear. Investigators have not noted if they believe the incidents to be connected.

Sheriff Robert Luna issued a statement on the deaths, which read:

"Our LASD family has experienced a significant amount of loss & tragedies this year. We are stunned to learn of these deaths & it has sent shockwaves of emotions throughout the department as we try & cope with the loss of not just 1, but 4 beloved active & retired members of our department family."

Video After The Jump

A young Long Island man who brutally murdered his mother-in-law "is not profiting from her death," his lawyer insisted yesterday, even though the killer stands to collect nearly a half-million dollars from the slain woman's estate as early as this week.

Brandon Palladino's lawyer said the 24-year-old rightfully inherited the money from his wife, Deanna Palladino, who died of an overdose last year.

Deanna was willed the fortune by her mother, Dianne Edwards, 59, whom Palladino choked to death in 2008 when she came home and caught him stealing her jewelry.

Deanna was suspected of conspiring in the theft but was never charged.

"He would be the only heir, because they didn't have any children," Palladino's lawyer, Ray Perini, said.

Deanna loved her husband "dearly and supported him until she died. He's not profiting from [Edwards'] death. The money passed to his wife, and it was hers to do with as she wanted."

Brandon will get a check for up to $500,000 as soon as this week, sources said yesterday.

"Morally, it really shocks the conscience. He shouldn't get a dime!" said Edwards family lawyer Dennis Lemke.

"It's a tough pill to swallow, but action is extremely unlikely to be successful [under current state law]," Lemke said.

Palladino, who admitted to the crime in exchange for a plea deal, is set to be sentenced to just 5 to 25 years next week.

"Perhaps the murderer's family will have a conscience and return the estate to the proper owners -- the family of the victim," Lemke said.

A source said that a Suffolk prosecutor asked him to give up his inheritance as part of the plea bargain and that Palladino refused.

The total estate was estimated at about $680,000 -- $581,000 after debts, according to sources and court documents.

Deanna Palladino received her mom's $190,000 in savings after her death, sources said. She used most of it to bankroll her husband's defense.

The victim's five-bedroom Melville home was sold in November for $340,000.

After debts, the profit from the sale of the home came to $241,000. The slain woman's personal property was estimated at about $150,000.

"It doesn't make sense. He can't profit from this," insisted Donna Larsen, the sister of the murdered woman.

"He robbed her before he murdered her, and now he's robbing her again after her death," said Larsen's husband, Andy.

12348734865?profile=originalFAMILY CURSE: Brandon Palladino, the husband of Deanna Palladino (left), killed her mom, Dianne Edwards (right, beside her first husband), and because Deanna committed suicide last year, he is next in line to inherit Edwards' half-million dollar estate

CNN Reports Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- At least 132 people were killed and 520 wounded in twin suicide car bombings in central Baghdad Sunday, officials said -- the deadliest attack on civilians in Iraq this year. Two car bombs detonated in quick succession near Iraqi government buildings about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, as the Iraqi work week began, an Interior Ministry official said. Among the wounded were three American security contractors, the U.S. Embassy told CNN. The embassy would not give any more details. One of the bombs exploded outside Baghdad's governorate building. The second was outside the Justice Ministry, about 500 meters (1,600 feet) away. The Ministry of Municipalities and Public Works, which is about 50 meters from the Justice Ministry, also sustained severe damage. Plumes of smoke billowed from the sites of the attacks as victims fled, some with blood streaming down their faces. The streets were strewn with debris, including charred cars and chunks of concrete from damaged buildings. Some government buildings and others in the area were heavily damaged. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki surveyed the carnage shortly after the explosions. "The cowardly attack that took place today should not affect the determination of the Iraqi people from continuing their battle against the deposed regime and the gangs of criminal Baath party and the terrorist al Qaeda organization, who have committed the most heinous crimes against the civilians,'" al-Maliki said in a statement.

President Obama condemned the bombings as "outrageous attacks against the Iraqi people." In a White House statement, Obama called the bombings an attempt to "derail Iraq's progress" and pledged that the United States would be a "close friend and partner" as Iraq prepares for elections in early 2010. According to the statement, Obama spoke Sunday with al-Maliki and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani to express his condolences and reiterate U.S. support. The bombings came a day after the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, visited the country for the first time, and on the same day Iraqi officials were due to try to break a logjam holding up a new election law. Iraqis are supposed to go to the polls January 16, but parliament still has not passed the legislation, putting the balloting in limbo. The original deadline for parliament to pass the law was October 15, because Iraq's electoral commission says it needs 90 days to organize the process. Iraq's parliament failed Wednesday to reach agreement on a new electoral law, so the issue was supposed go to the Political Council for National Security on Sunday. It is not clear if the bombings will derail the political council's discussions.

Al-Maliki vowed to punish "the enemies of the Iraqi people who want to spread chaos in the country and derail the political process and prevent the parliamentary elections from taking place as planned" in January. He said holding the elections as scheduled would send the strongest response and message to the "enemies of the political process who are supported from the outside." Susan Rice, the ambassador, completed a two-day visit to Iraq on Saturday that included a condolence stop at the Foreign Ministry, where a huge bombing killed more than 100 in August. Security was tightened around Baghdad in the wake of the August 19 attack, which Iraqis dubbed "Bloody Wednesday." Blast walls were erected around the city and more checkpoints were set up. Iraqi journalists grilled officials on TV on Sunday, demanding to know how the new attacks could have taken place given the new security measures. An Iraqi official said the government was working to bolster security, but regional cooperation was needed to help fight suicide bombers. "We are calling on international and U.N. envoys to come and find out why Iraq is being targeted this way," said Ali al-Dabbagh, the Iraqi government spokesman. The spokesman said Iraq's setbacks are mainly caused by a fledgling intelligence that has "not been completed." The European Union condemned "this terrorist attack" and sent its condolences to the families of the victims, the Swedish presidency said in a statement. The Foreign Ministry, near the site of Sunday's blasts, was one of six places attacked on August 19. That day's attacks killed at least 100 people and wounded hundreds more. The area is close to the heavily guarded Green Zone that also houses the U.S. Embassy. The August attacks shook confidence in the abilities of Iraqi security forces who took over securing urban areas from U.S. troops over the summer. The Iraqi government has blamed Syria for harboring former Baath party members, who it said planned the August attacks, and asked for their handover. Relations between the two neighbors were strained after the bombings. Each withdrew its ambassador from the other's country. Security in the capital was tightened after the August bombings, and a decision to normalize the situation in Baghdad by taking down blast walls was reversed and checkpoints increased. Iraqi and U.S. officials have warned of a possible increase in violence ahead of the country's national elections.

NYDailyNews Reports Boxing star Arturo Gatti wasn't murdered - he killed himself in a Brazil seaside resort three weeks ago, authorities said Thursday. The rough-and-tumble fighter's wife was released from jail after the ruling that Gatti, 37, committed suicide, the Associated Press reported. Former exotic dancer Amanda Rodrigues, who discovered the body on July 11, was arrested after police theorized she had strangled the former world champion with her purse strap. Police suggested Gatti was too drunk to defend himself when he was killed. But Brazilian state court Judge Ildete Verissimo de Lima in the city of Recife ordered Rodrigues' immediate release after the new finding. The 23-year-old was on a second honeymoon with Gatti and their 10-month-old baby when he was found dead inside their hotel room in Porto de Galinhas. Gatti, born in Montreal, trained in Jersey City, N.J., and found stardom on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. He captured his first title in 1995, by defeating junior welterweight champion Tracy Harris Patterson. Gatti's career also included a trio of brutally memorable battles against Micky Ward, along with fights against Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Merriweather.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) - Alexis Arguello, who fought in one of boxing's most classic brawls and reigned supreme at 130 pounds (59 kilograms), was found dead at his home early Wednesday. Coroners were conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Sandanista Party's Radio Ya and other local media were reporting it appeared to be a suicide. The La Prensa newspaper reported that Arguello — elected mayor of Nicaragua's capital last year — was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. The 57-year-old Arguello retired from boxing in 1995 with a record of 82-8 with 65 knockouts and was a champion in three weight divisions. He was perhaps best known for two thrilling battles with Aaron Pryor and fights with Ray Mancini, Bobby Chacon and Ruben Olivares. "I'm kind of in a daze right now. I can't believe what I'm hearing," Pryor told The Associated Press. "Those were great fights we had. This was a great champion." Nicknamed "The Explosive Thin Man," Arguello was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992, where flags were flying at half-staff in his honor on Wednesday. In 1999, a panel of experts assembled by The AP voted Arguello the best junior lightweight and sixth-best lightweight of the 20th century. He never lost at 130 pounds (59 kilograms), and his popularity in his own country was so great that he carried the flag for Nicaragua at the Beijing Olympics. "Not only was he one of the greatest fighters I've ever seen, he was the most intelligent fighter," Bob Arum, who promoted some of his biggest fights, told The Associated Press. "He was a ring tactician. Every move was thought out. And he was a wonderful, wonderful person." Arguello turned pro in 1968 and promptly lost his first bout. He didn't lose much more, and six years later knocked out Olivares in the 13th round to win the world featherweight title. Arguello went on to win the super featherweight and lightweight titles, his 1.78-meter (5-foot-10) frame allowing him to move up in weight without losing his tremendous punching power. At the time, he was only the sixth boxer to win championships in three weight classes, and was considered for a while the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Panama's Roberto Duran, another world champion at three weights, expressed disbelief. "I can't believe it. He was my friend, my brother," Duran said. "His death is a great loss for world boxing and a much greater loss for Nicaragua." The retired Oscar De La Hoya said: "I felt sad receiving the news and still find it hard to believe. Alexis was my idol. When I was young, I heard so much about him and his fights and loved his style in the ring. In my opinion he was one of the biggest and most influential fighters boxing has ever produced." De La Hoya said Arguello attended his fight against Steve Forbes in May 2008, which was De La Hoya's last victory. "We shared some great moments together before and after the fight," he said. "Arguello was definitely a legend in the boxing world because of all the joy he brought to his fans with his unforgettable career and amazing personality." "It was a brutal, brutal fight," Arum said. "That was something I will never, ever forget as long as I live. That was one of the most memorable fights I ever did." The bout was named "Fight of the Year" and "Fight of the Decade" by Ring Magazine, but was shrouded by controversy. Pryor's trainer, Panama Lewis, gave him a water bottle after the 13th round that many believe contained an illegal substance - an accusation Pryor denied. A rematch was ordered and they met again a year later at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. This time, Pryor knocked out Arguello in the 10th round. "We always talk to each other about that first fight," Pryor said. "I never went into the fight knowing I could beat Alexis, I just went into the fight to beat Alexis." Arguello announced after the fight that he would retire from boxing, but as so often happens in the sport, Arguello couldn't stay away from the ring. He returned to win two fights in 1985 and 1986, then didn't step in the ring until 1994, when he made a brief comeback. He retired for good the following year. "Alexis Arguello was a first-class fighter and a first-class gentleman," said Hall of Fame executive director Edward Brophy. "The Hall of Fame joins the boxing community in mourning the loss of a great champion and friend." Arguello fought against the Sandinista government in the 1980s after it seized his property and bank account, but later joined the party and ran for mayor of the capital last November. He defeated Eduardo Montealegre, though opponents alleged the vote was fraudulent. Arguello had returned Sunday from Puerto Rico, where he honored the late baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente. His death prompted Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega to announced he was canceling a trip to Panama for the inauguration of President-elect Ricardo Martinelli. "We are upset," presidential spokeswoman Rosario Murillo said. "This is a heartbreaking announcement. He was the champion of the poor, an example of forgiveness and reconciliation." Source:FoxSports
