Charged (32)

LAKE BARRINGTON, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago man is facing firearm charges after he told officers he accidentally shot himself in the leg while dreaming that an intruder was breaking into his home.

The Lake Barrington man was charged about 2 months after Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were called to his home on April 10 on a report about a person with a gunshot wound.

Deputies who found the 62-year-old man with a gunshot wound to 1 of his legs applied a tourniquet to the limb because he “was losing a significant amount of blood” before being hospitalized.

The man told investigators he “had a dream that someone was breaking into his home” & during that dream, he “retrieved his .357 Magnum revolver & shot at who he believed was the intruder.”

“When he fired, he shot himself & apparently woke up from the dream,” police said Tuesday.

Investigators determined there was no burglary attempt at the man’s home. But they found that his state firearm owner’s identification card had been revoked & he was still in possession of a firearm.

A warrant was issued June 9 for the man on charges of possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card & reckless discharge of a firearm, both felonies.

He was arrested Monday & released after posting bond & is scheduled for a June 29 court status hearing.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — After her husband died last year, she wrote a children’s book on grief. Now she’s charged with his murder.

Kouri Richins was arrested on Monday in Utah & is accused in charging documents of poisoning her husband with a lethal dose of fentanyl at their home in Kamas.

Prosecutors allege that Richins called authorities in the middle of the night in March 2022 to report that her husband, Eric Richins, was “cold to the touch.” The mother of 3 told officers that she had made her husband a mixed vodka drink to celebrate him selling a home & then went to soothe 1 of their children to sleep in their bedroom. She later returned&d upon finding her husband unresponsive, called 911.

A medical examiner later found 5 times the lethal dosage of fentanyl in his system.

In addition to the murder charge, Richins also faces charges involving the alleged possession of GHB — a narcolepsy drug.

The charges — which are based on officers’ interactions with Richins that night & the account of an “unnamed acquaintance” who claims to have sold her the fentanyl — come 2 months after Richins appeared on local television to promote “Are you with me?” a picture book she wrote to help children cope after the death of a loved one.

For a segment entitled “Good Things Utah,” Richins called her husband’s death unexpected & described how it sent her & her 3 boys reeling.

“It’s — you know — explaining to my kid just because he’s not present here with us physically, doesn’t mean his presence isn’t here with us,” she told the anchors, who commended her for being an amazing mother.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, prosecutors and defense lawyers said Thursday, making him the first former U.S. president to face a criminal charge & jolting his bid to retake the White House.

The charges remained under seal late Thursday, but the investigation centered on payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence claims of an extramarital sexual encounter. Prosecutors said they were working to coordinate Trump’s surrender, which could happen early next week. They did not say whether they intended to seek prison time in the event of a conviction, a development that wouldn’t prevent Trump from assuming the presidency.

The indictment, an extraordinary development after years of investigations into Trump’s business, political and personal dealings, injects a local district attorney’s office into the heart of a national presidential race and ushers in criminal proceedings in a city that the ex-president for decades called home. Arriving at a time of deep political divisions, the charges are likely to reinforce rather than reshape dueling perspectives of those who see accountability as long overdue and those who, like Trump, feel the Republican is being targeted for political purposes by a Democratic prosecutor.

Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly assailed the investigation, called the indictment “political persecution” & predicted it would damage Democrats in 2024.

A spokesman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office confirmed the indictment & said prosecutors had reached out to Trump’s defense team to coordinate a surrender. Trump was asked to surrender Friday but his lawyers said the Secret Service needed additional time as they made security preparations. Trump is expected to surrender early next week.

The case centers on well-chronicled allegations from a period in 2016 when Trump’s celebrity past collided with his political ambitions. Prosecutors for months scrutinized money paid to porn actor Stormy Daniels & former Playboy model Karen McDougal, whom he feared would go public with claims that they had extramarital sexual encounters with him.

Alec Baldwin had a responsibility on the set of “Rust” to check the gun he was holding, according to New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies.

“Every person that handles a gun has a duty to make sure, if they are going to handle that gun - point it at someone & pull the trigger – that it is not going to fire a projectile & kill someone, & this is really about justice for Halyna Hutchins,” she said minutes after announcing charges in the case.

“An actor doesn’t get a free pass just because they’re an actor,” she said.

Baldwin was both an actor & producer for the movie.

“He’s being charged as both. He was the actor that pulled the trigger, so certainly he’s charged as an actor, but also as a producer he also had a duty to make sure that the set was safe,” said Carmack-Altwies, noting that people on set had complained about the lax safety & there had been accidental misfires prior to this fatal incident.

“He should have been aware that safety was an issue on set & then as an actor that day, he should have checked that gun, checked those projectiles,” she said.

CHICAGO (AP) — The father of an Illinois man charged with killing 7 people in a mass shooting at a July 4 parade in a Chicago suburb has been charged with 7 felony counts of reckless conduct.

Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said Robert Crimo Jr. surrendered to police on Friday & will have a bond hearing Saturday. Rinehart said the charges are based on Crimo sponsoring his then 19-year-old son’s application for a gun license in 2019.

“Parents & guardians are in the best position to decide whether their teenagers should have a weapon,” Rinehart said. “In this case, the system failed when Robert Crimo Jr. sponsored his son. He knew what he knew & he signed the form anyway.”

Rinehart wouldn’t further discuss what led his office to file the charges this week. Authorities have previously said the accused shooter, Robert Crimo III, attempted suicide by machete in April 2019 & in September 2019 was accused by a family member of making threats to “kill everyone.”

Both those reports came months before Crimo Jr. sponsored his son’s application in December 2019.

A grand jury in July indicted Robert Crimo III on 21 first-degree murder counts, 48 counts of attempted murder & 48 counts of aggravated battery, representing the 7 people killed & dozens wounded in the Highland Park attack.

CNN — A veteran homicide detective in Kansas City, Kansas conspired with a local drug kingpin to help run a sex-trafficking operation involving underage girls.

Roger Golubski, a retired 35-year-veteran of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department allegedly used his position to shield the operation from law enforcement investigations, according to the 3-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Topeka. Golubski entered a plea of not guilty, said his attorney, Chris Joseph.

The sex trafficking operation, which was run out of an apartment complex in the 1990s by a local crack dealer named Cecil Brooks & 2 other men, victimized girls as young as 13.

In exchange for his protection, Golubski collected cash from Brooks & was allowed to “choose girls to provide him sexual services.”

Golubski, who retired from the police department in 2010, was charged in September with sexually assaulting a woman & a teenage girl 2 decades ago “while acting under color of law,” meaning he used his position as a police officer to commit the crimes. He has pleaded not guilty.

As he awaited trial under home confinement in that case, prosecutors unveiled a second indictment on Monday charging him with “conspiracy against rights” & 2 counts of “involuntary servitude” in connection with the alleged sex trafficking ring. Both cases stem from a years-long grand jury probe.

According to Monday’s indictment, Brooks recruited “young girls who were runaways” or came from broken homes & kept them locked in a room at an apartment complex where he and co-defendants LeMark Roberson & Richard “Bone” Robinson used threats & physical beatings to force them to engage in sex acts. The indictment refers to 2 unidentified victims who allege they were held captive & forced into sex.

One of the victims told authorities she was just 16 years old when Golubski pulled her hair, choked her & raped her.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former heavyweight boxer from Montenegro was charged by the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday with trafficking in 22 tons of cocaine worth over $1 billion, most of which was part of 1 of the largest cocaine seizures in American history.

Goran Gogic, 43, was arrested on Sunday night while trying to board a flight to Zurich from Miami International Airport, after being indicted by a grand jury in New York.

Prosecutors charged Gogic with 3 counts of violating the federal Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act & 1 count of conspiracy. Each count carries a mandatory minimum 10-year prison term & possible life sentence.

The charges stem from the seizures of 22 tons of cocaine from 3 commercial cargo ships in 2019, including 19.8 tons from the MSC Gayane while it was docked at Philadelphia's Packer Avenue Marine Terminal.

Prosecutors said the conspirators transported cocaine to Europe from Colombia through American ports, using cranes & nets at night to hoist drugs onto cargo ships from approaching speedboats along the ships' routes.

The complex operation required knowledge of each ship's crew, route & location data & that there was room to store drugs in shipping containers that were already aboard.

Gogic oversaw the logistics, coordinating with crew members, Colombian traffickers & European dockworkers to benefit himself & his Balkan-based cartels.

At least 8 Gayane crew members have pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges.

Gogic was a boxer from 2001 to 2012, winning 21 bouts & losing 4 with 2 draws.

The criminal cases against the former Aurora police officers & paramedics indicted in Elijah McClain’s death will move forward after an Adams County judge found the evidence against them strong enough.

Lawyers for the 5 men asked Adams County District Court Judge Priscilla Loew to review the cases & argued that there was not enough evidence to support the charges against their clients.

A grand jury in August indicted the 5 men — Peter Cichuniec, Jeremy Cooper, Nathan Woodyard, Randy Roedema & Jason Rosenblatt — on a combined 32 counts in connection with McClain’s 2019 death while in their custody, including manslaughter & criminally negligent homicide.

Loew reviewed thousands of pages of testimony & evidence & on Monday found that there was enough evidence for the cases to proceed.

Probable cause is a legal standard that states there must be sufficient evidence to create a reasonable belief that the defendant committed the crime charged. That is a lower standard than the “beyond a reasonable doubt” standard needed to convict someone at trial.

All five men are scheduled to appear in court for arraignment Aug. 12.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A man has been charged with murder in the death of a 9-year-old girl who was shot when fights broke out in the courtyard of an apartment complex in New Jersey’s capital city.

Isiah Roberts, 19, of Trenton, also faces two counts of aggravated assault and two weapons offenses, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday. It wasn’t known if he’s retained an attorney.

The shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. Friday in the courtyard of the Kingsbury Square apartments in Trenton. Police responding to reports of fights and possible shots fired there found the victim, Sequoya Bacon-Jones, who had been shot once. She was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead there a short time later.

Authorities have said they don’t think the child was the intended target, but the investigation is ongoing. It’s also not clear if the shooting was related to the fight.

No other serious injuries were reported.

NEW YORK (AP) — An 83-year-old ex-convict who served two decades in prison for fatally shooting a girlfriend, got out & then went back to jail for killing another girlfriend a year later, is now charged in a new crime: The dismemberment of a woman whose head was found in the parolee’s apartment.

Prosecutors identified the ex-convict as Harvey Marcelin, who was freed from prison in 2019. Marcelin was arrested in New York City last week on a charge of concealing a human corpse after being recorded on surveillance video abandoning a bag later found to contain the victim’s torso.

A grand jury charged Marcelin on Thursday with murder.

The Brooklyn district attorney’s office identified the victim as Susan Leyden, a 68-year-old Brooklyn resident.

Though identified as a man in court filings in past decades, Marcelin was booked this time as a woman. Acquaintances told reporters Marcelin identified in recent years as a woman.

Marcelin’s previous convictions were for killing live-in girlfriends, according to court documents.

A jury found Marcelin guilty of murder in 1963 for fatally shooting Jacqueline Bonds inside a Manhattan apartment. At the time, Marcelin was also facing an attempted rape charge involving another woman. The judge gave Marcelin life in prison after jurors were unable to agree on whether the crime justified a death penalty.

Marcelin was paroled in 1984 & was arrested the following year for fatally stabbing another girlfriend and leaving her body in a trash bag in the street. Marcelin was convicted of manslaughter & sentenced to six to 12 years in prison.

ELDORET, Kenya, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Ibrahim Rotich, the husband of slain Kenyan Olympic runner Agnes Tirop, was charged with her murder & pleaded not guilty in a Kenyan court on Tuesday.

Rotich, 41, had been ordered last week to undergo a mental health test before entering a plea. Tirop was found stabbed to death at her home in the Rift Valley town of Iten on Oct. 13, in a case that has shone a spotlight on violence against women in the east African country.

Rotich appeared in court in handcuffs, wearing a black jacket & a cap. He looked down at the floor for most of the proceedings.

Rotich's lawyer, Joseline Mitei, declined to discuss the details or results of his mental health evaluation.

"I intend to put formal application in court for my client to be released on bail," Mitei said.

The bail hearing is set for Dec. 1.

Police arrested Rotich in the coastal city of Mombasa the day after Tirop's body was discovered. They said he had been trying to flee the country.

In September, Tirop broke the women-only 10km world record in Germany. She won bronze medals at the 2017 & 2019 World Championships in the 10,000 meters.

CHICAGO - Local rapper G Herbo was accused Tuesday of lying to a federal agent, adding a third federal charge to an indictment that already includes allegations of fraud and identity theft.

Herbo, whose real name is Herbert Wright III, allegedly told a federal agent in November 2018 that he never knew or worked with rap promoter Antonio Strong, who was among five people indicted with him in December.

Strong identified himself as Wright's manager when he allegedly used stolen credit card information and IDs to pay for private jets, expensive meals & designer puppies beginning in March 2016, according to the indictment filed in the U.S. District Court in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Wright allegedly told a federal agent that he had no relationship with Strong, personal or professional, when in reality he paid Strong for work & "received valuable goods from Strong, including private jet charters, luxury accommodations & exotic car rentals," the prosecutor's office said.

He also allegedly had frequent conversations with Strong over the phone, via text and on Instagram, prosecutors said.

Wright faces up to five years in prison if convicted, along with three years of supervised release & a $250,000 fine.

The South Side native has been a staple in Chicago's drill scene since he was a teenager in the early 2010s, helping the local rap genre grow to international prominence alongside frequent collaborators like Chief Keef & Lil Durk.

Wright's last album, "PTSD," peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard charts in March 2020.

Though the rapper has been slapped with weapons & battery charges in recent years, he's most recently made headlines for his community outreach on the South Side, hosting food drives & back-to-school giveaways.

New York (CNN) The White woman who called cops on a Black man who was birdwatching in Central Park will be prosecuted, the Manhattan district attorney said Monday.

Amy Cooper, the woman who was filmed accusing a Black man of threatening her, faces a charge of falsely reporting an incident in the third degree, according to the DA.

"At this time I would like to encourage anyone who has been the target of false reporting to contact our Office. We are strongly committed to holding perpetrators of this conduct accountable," DA Cyrus Vance said in a statement.

Cooper was walking her dog in the park last month when she encountered Christian Cooper (no relation) in a wooded area known as the Ramble. A dispute began because her dog was not on a leash, contrary to the Ramble's rules, both of them told CNN.

Christian Cooper posted on Facebook a part of their exchange that he recorded, and it went viral. In the recording, he is silent for the most part, while she frantically tells police he is threatening her and her dog.

"I'm taking a picture and calling the cops," she is heard saying in the video. "I'm going to tell them there's an African American man threatening my life."

Cooper has been issued a desk appearance ticket and is scheduled for arraignment October 14.

She was terminated from her job at Franklin Templeton after the video went viral.

ST CHARLES, Mo. (WTHR) — A mother was charged after her 11-year-old daughter gave birth in a bathtub last week.

Lesbia Cante pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge of endangering the welfare of a child. In court Wednesday, her cash-only bail was increased to $100,000 from $10,000.

According to court documents, Cante and her husband, Francisco Javier Gonzalez-Lopez, took a newborn to St. Joseph Hospital in St. Charles last week. The baby still had the umbilical cord and placenta attached and had a body temperature of 90 degrees.

Gonzalez-Lopez initially told police someone left the infant on his front porch. In an interview with detectives two days later, he told police the father of the child was his son, 17-year-old Norvin Leonidas Lopez-Cante, and the mother was the teen’s 11-year-old relative.

Gonzalez-Lopez said he did not know the girl was pregnant or that Lopez-Cante was raping her until she gave birth to the child in their bathtub.

After police read Lopez-Cante his Miranda rights, he told police he had sex with the girl about 100 times but did not know she was pregnant. He said he did not know when he first had sex with her but said it happened about twice a week.

Lopez-Cante was charged with first-degree statutory rape, statutory sodomy and incest. His bond was set at $25,000, cash-only.

Gonzalez-Lopez was charged with endangering the welfare of a child for his role in the incident. His bail was set at $10,000, cash only. Charging documents said he entered the country illegally and was previously deported.

According to Child Center Inc., the Child Advocacy Center of Northeast Missouri, Inc., 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18.

They say 90% of the time, it’s by someone the child knows or has a relationship with. They call it the three L’s: it’s either by someone you like, love or live with.

Kennesaw State star point guard Kamiyah Street has been charged with multiple counts of murder, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Street was arrested in Atlanta on Nov. 21 in connection with the July shooting death of 21-year-old Nashiem Hubbard-Etienne.

The 20-year-old Street faces eight counts --  including murder, three counts of felony murder, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. She is one of five people who has been charged in connection with the murder case

Hubbard-Etienne was shot to death on July 16 at an Atlanta apartment building. His body was later found in the parking deck of that complex. Police believe that it was not a random crime and that the victim was targeted intentionally.

KSU's assistant athletic director for communications said the team was made aware of the charges against Street on Thursday and has indefinitely suspended the player from all team activities, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The school declined to comment further, noting "neither the university nor the athletic department have any additional information at this time."

The junior point guard's name has been removed from the roster section of the team's website. Street has averaged 21 points and five rebounds through the first four games of this season.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Investigators searching through garbage found the body of a 3-year-old girl who was missing more than a week, and authorities are charging two people with murder, police said Tuesday.

Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith told a news conference that the remains of Kamille McKinney were located in a trash bin that had been taken to a landfill. Police had been watching garbage deposits from a certain part of the city, he said.

Smith said police were obtaining murder warrants against two people previously identified as persons of interest in the case, 39-year-old Patrick Devone Stallworth and his 29-year-old girlfriend, Derick Irisha Brown.

Lawyers for both have said they are innocent.

The child, known as “Cupcake” to relatives, vanished while outside a birthday party on Oct. 12. Investigators know of no link between the suspects and the girl or her family, Smith said.

“We believe this was something they thought about and acted upon. They saw an opportunity to take a young child, and they did,” said Smith, who did not reveal a potential motive.

Stallworth, arrested after officers located a vehicle seen near the abduction site, previously was charged with child pornography, but authorities said the charge wasn’t related to the missing child.

It wasn’t clear how long the child might have been dead. Mayor Randall Woodfin said the girl’s parents were experiencing “unimaginable” pain.

“This is a tough moment for our city, a tough moment for the family,” he said.

Gov. Kay Ivey, in a statement Tuesday night, offered her condolences to Kamille’s family.

“The heart of our state is broken...,” Ivey said. “Our prayers remain with Kamille’s family and all who have been touched by this nightmare.”

Report via KHOU -- Blood evidence obtained from the apartment of missing 4-year-old Maleah Davis' estranged stepfather has been linked to the girl, according to Houston police detectives.

Derion Vence, 26, is in custody for evidence tampering. The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitives Task Force arrested Vence around 2:40 p.m. in Sugar Land.

HPD detectives say in addition to blood evidence linked to Maleah being found at the apartment, Vence was also seen carrying a laundry basket from the apartment.

Vence's silver Nissan Altima was recovered in Missouri City on Thursday.

The laundry basket was found in the trunk of the Nissan along with a gas can, according to HPD.

Although Vence reported his Altima was taken in an abduction, surveillance video showed someone in that Nissan Altima dropped Vence off at the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital on May 5, according to police.

Vence, who had been engaged to Maleah's mother, is the last known person to see Maleah and recent video shared by a neighbor with police shows him with bottles of Clorox and a garbage bag before Maleah was reported missing.

Maleah's mother previously threatened to break up with Vence because of infidelity allegations, according to local activist Quanell X, who appeared with the mother in front of reporters Friday.

Report via TMZ -- R. Kelly has been charged with 10 counts by the Cook County State's Attorney.

Prosecutors hit him with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse Friday morning. TMZ has learned 9 of the 10 counts involve alleged victims ranging in age from 13 to 16 years old. One of them is the subject of 4 different counts. There are a total of 4 alleged victims.

According to the complaint, the allegations include oral and vaginal sex with a girl between the ages of 13 and 17. The complaint says he "transmitted his semen onto [the alleged victim's] body for the purpose of Robert Kelly's or [the alleged victim's] sexual gratification or arousal, by the use of force or threat of force."

Sources connected to Kelly tell TMZ the singer plans to voluntarily turn himself in to authorities tonight. Still, prosecutors will reportedly appear before a judge today seeking an arrest warrant for him.

The criminal sexual abuse charge is a class 2 felony in Illinois, and each charge carries a max sentence of 3 to 7 years in prison.

A grand jury had convened about a week ago to investigate the alleged sex tape that Michael Avenatti handed over to authorities. TMZ broke the story ... 2 women testified for the grand jury over the last week, including one who provided physical evidence. We're told as many as a dozen women came forward to testify.

Sources connected to the case tell us the tape was a pivotal force leading to the charges. We're told that Avenatti and his client spent a significant amount of time with the Cook County State's Attorney and the grand jury in the last few weeks.

As we reported, Avenatti says he uncovered the VHS tape during a months-long investigation into allegations his clients made about Kelly having sex with minors. The tape reportedly shows Kelly having sex with a girl who seems to be 14 -- with both Kelly and the girl referring to her genitals and other body parts as being 14 years old.

The charges come directly on the heels of 2 other Kelly accusers coming forward with their attorney Gloria Allred. The women allege sexual misconduct by Kelly in a Baltimore hotel room in 1998 ... when they were both underage teens.

It's still unclear when the new alleged sex tape was shot, but Avenatti said he was sure it fell within the statute of limitations.

The family of Joycelyn Savage, one of Kelly's current girlfriends featured in "Surviving R. Kelly," is anxious to be reunited with her. Their attorney, Gerald Griggs, tells us they are waiting for him to be arrested so they can attempt to make contact with Joycelyn.

Video After The Jump

JUPITER, Florida (CBS Boston) – Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, will be charged in a prostitution bust in Jupiter, Florida. Kraft, who denies doing anything illegal, was allegedly caught in the act on video, according to police.

The stunning announcement came late Friday morning at a police news conference.

Police said Kraft was involved in two incidents in the last month at the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter and there is video evidence of both showing the Patriots owner in the act. Kraft is one of 25 people who will be charged by Jupiter Police in this specific bust.

“It appears when you go to the spa for a half hour the fee would be $59, for an hour that would be $79,” the lead detective on the case, Andrew Sharp, said at the news conference. He could not say how long Kraft was allegedly there or what he paid. Kraft was driven to the spa each time, police said, adding that the driver is not being charged.

“The video that we obtained, it shows the act that took place,” Sharp said. When asked specifically – does the video contain Kraft inside the spa receiving the alleged act, Sharp said, “The answer to that is yes.”

The incidents are part of a larger crackdown on human trafficking and prostitution at at least eight spas in the West Palm Beach area. Kraft faces two misdemeanor charges of soliciting another for prostitution. Police said they are in the process of issuing an arrest warrant in the case.

Once the warrant is issued, Kraft will get a summons in the mail ordering him to turn himself in. He is not expected to be arrested. Kraft’s lawyers will likely contact the county attorney and make arrangements for Kraft to come to court in Florida and turn himself in, according to WBZ-TV’s Cheryl Fiandaca.

Kraft could face up to a year in jail, probation or fines. he could also face discipline from the NFL under the league’s personal conduct policy.

“We categorically deny that Mr. Kraft engaged in any illegal activity. Because it is a judicial matter, we will not be commenting further,” a spokesperson for Kraft said in a statement to CNN Friday afternoon.
