ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (ClickOrlando) – An 85-year-old woman was attacked and killed Monday by a gator in a Florida retirement community.

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office deputies & Florida Fish & Wildlife officials responded to the call about an alligator bite incident.

Neighbors said the woman, Gloria Serge, was walking her dog when she was dragged into the water by an alligator at the Spanish Lakes Fairways 55 & older community.

One resident, 77-year-old Carol, said it was just past 12 p.m. when it happened.

“I heard kind of like a commotion,” she said. “I looked out & I saw the dog & I saw…my neighbor.”

Carol first called 911 & ran, trying & hoping she could help.

“I just remember her coming up & pushing her hair out of her face & I’m saying, ‘Swim toward the paddle boat’ & she said, ‘I can’t, the gator has me.’

“I got my longest Shepherd’s hook to try to hook her or hit him or do something,” Carol continued. “Hit him on the nose or something. I couldn’t do anything, which haunts me right now.”

The victim was recovered & a contracted nuisance alligator trapper captured the 10-foot-long alligator involved in the incident.

Authorities said the victim’s dog survived & is in good condition. FWC said the woman was pulled into the water by the gator after it tried taking her dog.

BUFFALO, New York (ABC7) -- The white supremacist who killed 10 Black people in a Buffalo supermarket was taken out of a courtroom Wednesday after someone in the audience rushed at him & was restrained by a court officer.

The charged moment came at the sentencing of Payton Gendron. Victims' relatives were addressing him about their anguish & loss.

Gendron pleaded guilty in November to charges including murder & domestic terrorism motivated by hate. The terrorism charge carries an automatic life sentence.

"You don't know what we're going through," a man shouted as he was led away by court officers. For several minutes thereafter, family members hugged & calmed each other.

Moments earlier, Kimberly Salter, the widow of security guard Aaron Salter, explained why she & her family were wearing black & red.

"Red for the blood that he shed for his family&d for his community & black because we are still grieving," she said.

Gendron, now 19, wore bullet-resistant armor & a helmet equipped with a livestreaming camera as he carried out the May 14 attack. He killed his victims with a semiautomatic rifle, purchased legally but then modified so he could load it with high-capacity ammunition magazines that are illegal in New York.

There were only 3 survivors after he shot 13 people, specifically seeking out Black shoppers & workers.

His victims at Tops Friendly Market included a church deacon, the grocery store's guard, a neighborhood activist, a man shopping for a birthday cake, a grandmother of nine and the mother of a former Buffalo fire commissioner. The victims ranged in age from 32 to 86.

In documents posted online, Gendron said he hoped the attack would help preserve white power in the U.S. He wrote that he picked the Tops grocery store because it was in a predominantly Black neighborhood.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WGRZ) — The man who admitted to killing 10 Black people in a Buffalo grocery store last year will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Payton S. Gendron was sentenced in Erie County Court in front of Judge Susan Eagan to life in prison without parole for the domestic terrorism charge & all 10 first degree murder charges.

Gendron, a White male, shot & killed 10 Black people & injured 3 others at the Tops on May 14, 2022.

Gendron pleaded guilty on November 28, 2022, to 15 state charges.

*10 counts of 1st-degree murder - 1 for each victim
*1 count of domestic terrorism
*3 counts of 2nd-degree attempted murder as a hate crime - 1 for each person injured
*1 count of 2nd criminal possession of the weapon.

Judge Eagan described each victim as she handed down each sentence. She told Gendron that he would never see the light of day ever again as a free man.

Family members who lost loved ones in the May 14 shooting, survivors, as well as others who have been left traumatized gave victim impact statements in court.

A woman representing the grandchildren of Buffalo mass shooting victim Ruth Whitfield, in her statement, she spoke to Gendron, "You thought you broke us, but you awoke us. Despite our battle scars, you will not win the war. You are a cowardly racist."

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (AP) — The hunt for a gunman who killed 10 people at a ballroom dance club during Lunar New Year celebrations ended Sunday when authorities found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the van he used to flee after people thwarted his attempt at a second shooting.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified the man as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran and said no other suspects were at large. Speaking at an evening news conference, he added that the motive remained unclear for the attack, which wounded 10 more.

Luna did not have the exact ages of the victims but said they all appeared to be over 50. Seven of the wounded people remained in the hospital, he said.

The sheriff added that the suspect was carrying what he described as a semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine, and a second handgun was discovered in the van where Tran was found dead.

The shooting late Saturday in the predominantly Asian American community of Monterey Park cast a shadow over the New Years festivities and sent a wave of fear through Asian American communities in the Los Angeles area. Other cities sent extra officers to watch over the celebrations.

MIAMI (WDSU) —Miami police said multiple people were shot outside of a restaurant Thursday night.

Witnesses said one of the victims was New Orleans rapper Rob49.

The shooting reportedly happened during a music video shoot for rapper French Montana.

Miami police did not confirm the number of victims or their conditions.

Mexican authorities on Monday raised the death toll from an attack on a state prison in Ciudad Juarez across the border from El Paso, Texas to 17, a brazen operation that appeared designed to free the leader of a local gang.

25 inmates escaped in the attack.

10 of the dead were prison guards who were attacked by gunmen who arrived early Sunday in armored vehicles & fired on the entrance & inside dormitories.

Among those who escaped is the leader of Los Mexicles, Ernesto Piñón de la Cruz, also known as El Neto.

El Neto, 33, has been in prison for 14 years serving a sentence for kidnapping and murder. An attempt by his gang to free him during a prison transfer in 2010 failed and he was injured.

The others inmates who escaped were members of the Mexicles gang, which is associated with the Caborca Cartel. The Mexicles have been one of Juarez's main gangs for decades and for many years were known to work with the Sinaloa Cartel.

The Caborca Cartel had been led by drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero who was recaptured in July. He was allegedly behind the killing of a U.S. DEA agent in 1985.

Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval said the soldiers & state police who retook control of the prison found 10 "VIP" cells outfitted with televisions & other comforts. One even had a safe filled with cash.

Authorities also found cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl 2 marijuana inside the prison.

A woman who made 10 false rape claims against 2 men, triggering 60 lines of investigation, has been jailed.

Cathy Richardson was slammed by Essex Police for perverting the course of justice, wasting their time & doing a ‘disservice’ to real victims of sexual crimes.

The 35-year-old made a series of allegations against the men between January & May 2021.

These led to dozens of investigations & 1 man being arrested & subjected to a forensic examination.

CCTV, phone data & information from ANPR cameras later proved the alleged attacker was not in the area at the time Richardson claimed the assaults took place.

One of the men even agreed to have a GPS tracking tag fitted to his ankle, which would send an alarm to police if it was taken off.

Data from the tag was analyzed and showed he was not in the area when an alleged attack supposedly happened.

Detective Inspector James Holmes said: ‘Whenever an allegation of rape or sexual assault comes to us, our starting point is to believe the person making that claim. They are awful offences & have a massive impact on those who’ve experienced them & we have specialist officers & staff who support them & investigate.

‘However, it quickly became clear the allegations Richardson had made were not what they seemed.

‘Her claims do a great disservice to victims of rape & sexual assault who need our help and support.'

Richardson was arrested & later charged with perverting the course of justice. She admitted 10 counts at Salisbury Crown Court & was sentenced to 5 years & 1 month in prison.

Lucy Letby has been accused of murdering 5 baby boys & 2 girls & attempting to murder 10 other babies at Countess of Chester hospital.

Nick Johnson KC, prosecuting, said she was a "constant malevolent presence" in the hospital's neonatal unit.

Ms Letby, 32, denies 22 charges at Manchester Crown Court.

Jurors heard Ms Letby is alleged to have tried to kill 1 child 3 times, while another died as a result of being injected with air.

"Prior to January 2015, the statistics for the mortality of babies in the neo-natal unit at the Countess of Chester were comparable to other like units," he said.

"However, over the next 18 months or so, there was a significant rise in the number of babies who were dying & in the number of serious catastrophic collapses."

Medics also noted that babies who had collapsed "did not respond to appropriate & timely resuscitation" & that others "collapsed dramatically, but then, equally dramatically, recovered".

"Having searched for a cause, which they were unable to find, the consultants noticed that the inexplicable collapses & deaths did have one common denominator," he said.

"The presence of one of the neonatal nurses & that nurse was Lucy Letby."

"That review suggests in the period between mid-2015 & the middle of 2016, somebody in the neonatal unit poisoned 2 children with insulin," he said.

"The prosecution say the only reasonable conclusion to be drawn from the evidence you will hear is that somebody poisoned these babies deliberately with insulin."

WELDON, Saskatchewan, Sept 5 (Reuters) - 2 men suspected of killing 10 people in a stabbing rampage that devastated an indigenous community in Canada were still at large on Monday as police tried to determine a motive for attacks that shocked a nation where mass violence is rare.

Police launched a manhunt for Damien Sanderson, 31, & Myles Sanderson, 30, after they allegedly stabbed people in 13 different areas across an indigenous community & its surrounding province on Sunday. At least 15 others were wounded.

The attacks in Saskatchewan province were among the deadliest in Canada's modern history. A statement by indigenous leaders indicated they may have been drug-related. Police said some of the victims appeared to have been targeted, while others were apparently random. 

Indigenous people account for less than 5% of Canada's population of about 38 million and suffer from higher levels of poverty and unemployment than other Canadians and also have a shorter life expectancy.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government had been in direct communication with the James Smith Cree Nation leadership, adding, "we are ready to assist in any way we can."

WASHINGTON (AP) — A retired New York Police Department officer was sentenced on Thursday to a record-setting 10 years in prison for attacking the U.S. Capitol & using a metal flagpole to assault 1 of the police officers trying to hold off a mob of Donald Trump supporters.

Thomas Webster’s prison sentence is the longest so far among roughly 250 people who have been punished for their conduct during the riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The previous longest was shared by 2 other rioters, who were sentenced separately to 7 years & 3 months in prison.

Webster, a 20-year NYPD veteran, was the first Capitol riot defendant to be tried on an assault charge & the first to present a self-defense argument. A jury rejected Webster’s claim that he was defending himself when he tackled Metropolitan Police Department officer Noah Rathbun & grabbed his gas mask outside the Capitol on Jan. 6.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Webster, 56, to 10 years in prison plus three years of supervised release. He allowed Webster to report to prison at a date to be determined instead of immediately ordering him into custody.

“Mr. Webster, I don’t think you’re a bad person,” the judge said. “I think you were caught up in a moment. But as you know, even getting caught up in a moment has consequences.”

“The other victim was democracy, and that is not something that can be taken lightly,” Mehta added.

10 people, including 3 children, were killed when a house went up in flames in Pennsylvania early Friday morning. 3 adults survived the fire & a criminal investigation is ongoing.

Authorities responded to the 2-story home in Nescopeck at 2:42 a.m. local time & learned that although 3 people had made it out, there were others trapped inside, according to state police.

Several responding agencies & K9 units located the victims inside of the home.

State police identified them as: Dale Baker, 19; Star Baker, 22; David Daubert, 79; Brian Daubert, 42; Shannon Daubert, 45; Laura Daubert, 47; and Marian Slusser, 54. Three juveniles also died — they were identified as a 7-year-old girl, a 6-year-old boy & a 5-year-old boy.

Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Co. firefighter Harold Baker told the Citizens' Voice newspaper of Wilkes-Barre that the 10 victims included his son, daughter, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, 3 grandchildren & 2 other relatives.

Baker said that the address initially given for the call was a neighboring home, but that he realized it was his family's residence as the fire truck approached.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud popping sound or explosion, before seeing the front porch of the home rapidly consumed by flames. Some also reported hearing a young man screaming in front of the home, "They're all dead."

Baker, who was relieved of his firefighting duties because of his relationship to the victims, said 14 people were living in the home. One of them was out delivering newspapers & 3 others escaped.

The home was completely destroyed in the fire.
