A man who murdered his 20-year-old niece and dumped her body on wasteland after she refused a forced marriage has been jailed for life.

Mohammed Taroos Khan, 53, killed Somaiya Begum at her home before leaving her body wrapped up in a rug.

The Leeds Beckett University student's body was found in July 2022, 11 days after she went missing.

At Bradford Crown Court, Khan was given a minimum of 25 years in jail.

During the trial, jurors were told Miss Begum was subject to a Forced Marriage Protection Order at the time of her death due to attempts by her father to force her to marry a cousin "by threat of violence."

She had been living with another of her uncles after her parents had been issued with the order.

After attacking Miss Begum in her home on June 25 last year, Khan was seen on CCTV dragging her body from his car & dumping it on waste ground.

The footage, which was played to the jury, showed him parking on Mill Lane before getting out & pulling something long & light colored out of the vehicle.

Khan, who denied murder, admitted perverting the course of justice by disposing of Miss Begum's body & trying to burn her mobile phone.

For this, he was handed a 5-year sentence, to run concurrently.

A post-mortem examination found a 4-inch metal spike embedded in Miss Begum's back which had penetrated her lung.

Mexican authorities on Monday raised the death toll from an attack on a state prison in Ciudad Juarez across the border from El Paso, Texas to 17, a brazen operation that appeared designed to free the leader of a local gang.

25 inmates escaped in the attack.

10 of the dead were prison guards who were attacked by gunmen who arrived early Sunday in armored vehicles & fired on the entrance & inside dormitories.

Among those who escaped is the leader of Los Mexicles, Ernesto Piñón de la Cruz, also known as El Neto.

El Neto, 33, has been in prison for 14 years serving a sentence for kidnapping and murder. An attempt by his gang to free him during a prison transfer in 2010 failed and he was injured.

The others inmates who escaped were members of the Mexicles gang, which is associated with the Caborca Cartel. The Mexicles have been one of Juarez's main gangs for decades and for many years were known to work with the Sinaloa Cartel.

The Caborca Cartel had been led by drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero who was recaptured in July. He was allegedly behind the killing of a U.S. DEA agent in 1985.

Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval said the soldiers & state police who retook control of the prison found 10 "VIP" cells outfitted with televisions & other comforts. One even had a safe filled with cash.

Authorities also found cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl 2 marijuana inside the prison.

TEXARKANA, Texas (KSLA) - 4 men from Texarkana have been arrested on alleged drug 4 firearm crimes.

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas Brit Featherston announced the following arrests on Thursday, May 19:

Deablo Deshon Lewis, AKA Pablo Lew, 31
Michael Darnell Peacock, AKA Fruit, 37
Terrance Lamar Peacock, AKA T, 31
Justin Marshall Owens, 40

A federal grand jury indicted the four men back on March 10. According to the indictment, starting in November of 2018 & continuing through March of 2022, the 4 men allegedly conspired with each other & others to distribute fentanyl, meth, U-47700 & marijuana. They also allegedly carried, used & possessed firearms during this time.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says as a result of their actions, 3 people died & another was seriously injured. Officials say the 4 men are responsible for dealing around $5 million worth of drugs.

“The counterfeit oxycodone pills--sometimes known as ‘blues’ or ‘M30s’--that were distributed in the Texarkana area contain deadly fentanyl,” said Featherston. “Increasingly, we are seeing more street drugs with deadly fentanyl added to them & it is killing the users. More people need to be aware of this increasing trend that can kill the recreational drug user. Simply put, one pill can kill!”

If convicted, the men could face anywhere from 25 years to life in federal prison.

DALLAS (AP) — Jeff Gladney, a defensive back for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, died Monday in a car crash in Dallas. He was 25.

Gladney’s death was confirmed by the Cardinals and his agent.

“We are devastated to learn of Jeff Gladney’s passing. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who are mourning this tremendous loss,” the team said.

The crash occurred on the service road of Woodall Rodgers Freeway in Dallas. Another person also died.

The Dallas County sheriff’s department said no one was available on the Memorial Day holiday to talk about the crash.

Gladney played at TCU before becoming a 2020 first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings. He played in 16 games that year but was released before the 2021 season, when he was charged with assaulting a woman.

Gladney was found not guilty in Dallas County, Texas, in March and was subsequently signed by the Cardinals. He participated in team drills last week.

“We are asking prayers for the family and privacy at this most difficult time,” agent Brian Overstreet said.

The NFL said Gladney’s death was a “tragic loss.”

NEW YORK (AP) — R. Kelly, the R&B superstar known for his anthem “I Believe I Can Fly,” deserves at least 25 years behind bars for sexually abusing women and girls, prosecutors said in a memo filed Wednesday in advance of his sentencing later this month.

A New York City jury found Kelly guilty of racketeering and multiple other counts last year at a sex-trafficking trial that was seen as a signature moment in the #MeToo movement. Prosecutors alleged that the entourage of managers and aides who helped Kelly meet girls — and keep them obedient — amounted to a criminal enterprise.

Several accusers testified in lurid detail during the trial, alleging that Kelly subjected his victims to perverse and sadistic whims when they were underage.

Kelly used his “fame, money and popularity” to systematically “prey upon children and young women for his own sexual gratification,” prosecutors wrote in the filing.

“He continued his crimes and avoided punishment for them for almost 30 years and must now be held to account,” prosecutors wrote.

Kelly’s lawyers have argued that he deserves only a maximum of about 17 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines.

Among multiple sordid allegations, jurors heard testimony about a fraudulent marriage scheme hatched to protect Kelly after he feared he had impregnated R&B phenom Aaliyah in 1994 when she was just 15. Witnesses said they were married in matching jogging suits using a license falsely listing her age as 18; he was 27 at the time.

Aaliyah worked with Kelly, who wrote and produced her 1994 debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number.” She died in a plane crash in 2001 at age 22.

The competing defense memo suggested prosecutors’ arguments for a higher sentence overreached by falsely claiming Kelly participated in the bribery of “a public aid officer to produce an identification card” that allowed the sham marriage to go forward.

Kelly’s lawyers also said it was wrong to assert he should get more time because he sexually abused one of his victims — referred to in court as “Jane” — after her parents innocently entrusted him to help her with her musical career.

“The record shows that Jane’s parents directed Jane to lie to the defendant about her age and then encouraged her to seduce him,” the papers say.

Kelly, 55, is set to be sentenced on June 29.

TAMPA, Fla (WTSP) — The man convicted of fracturing his girlfriend's infant daughter's skull while she was away at work back in 2018 will spend the next 25 years in prison.

After serving his prison sentence, Demarcus Johnson will then serve 5 years on probation, a judge ruled Monday.

Johnson tried to cover the crime up with lies when the 3-month-old baby's mother arrived at her home.

Johnson told his girlfriend that "nothing unusual happened" before she returned home from work that day & found her daughter unresponsive the morning of July 13, 2018.

The child survived the abuse due to life-saving emergency brain surgery after she was airlifted to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

A child abuse expert testified that the infant suffered such "violent, abusive" head trauma from being forcefully shaken & suffering a strong blow to the left side of her head that she lost the ability to move, eat or even cry.

During the trial, evidence was presented showing that the abuse left the 3-month-old with multiple skull fractures & internal bleeding. A doctor even described the child's skull as broken into fragments like "puzzle pieces."

Johnson was found guilty on Jan. 28, 2022, for aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm.

State guidance recommended a minimum of 6.5 years in a Florida State Prison. The maximum sentence for the crime was 30 years.

At least 25 people were killed in a shootout between suspected drug traffickers and police in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, one of the state's deadliest police raids, police said.

People targeted in the raid in the poor Jacarezinho neighborhood tried to escape across rooftops as police arrived in armored vehicles and helicopters flew overhead, television images showed. The firefight forced residents to shelter in their homes.

The victims included one police officer, and the remainder were suspected members of the drug-trafficking gang that dominated life in the slum, including some of its leaders, police said.

It was the deadliest single police operation in 16 years for Rio state which has suffered for decades from drug-related violence in its numerous favelas.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that Rio de Janeiro prosecutors have a constitutional obligation to oversee the police and pursue criminal investigations of police abuses. It called for a thorough and independent investigation into the deaths.

According to HRW, Rio police killed 453 people and at least four police officers died in police actions during the first three months of the year, despite a Supreme Court ruling prohibiting operations in communities during the COVID-19 pandemic except in "absolutely exceptional cases."

Police said in addition to drug trafficking, the gang robbed trucks of cargo and held up commuter trains to steal from passengers.

Police displayed an arsenal of seized weapons at a news conference: six assault rifles, 15 handguns, a machine gun, 14 grenades and a round of artillery ammunition.

UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — A New York judge sentenced Brandon Clark to 25 years to life for killing a 17-year-old woman and posting photos of her body online afterwards.

About 40 people attended the sentencing hearing on Tuesday in Oneida County Court and heard both from Clark and several of the victim’s relatives, Syracuse.com reported.

Bianca Devins was killed in 2019 after coming back to Utica, New York, from a concert with Clark in New York City. Clark admitted to cutting Devin’s throat and posting photos of her body online immediately afterwards.

In June, Clark requested to withdraw his guilty plea in the case, delaying his sentencing. Judge Michael Dwyer asked Clark on Tuesday why he had tried to withdraw the plea, saying he must take full responsibility for the killing, the newspaper reported.

Clark said mental health issues were the reason for his request. He apologized to Devins’ family and the court, the newspaper reported.

Kim Devins’, the mother of Bianca, talked about the pain she and her family have felt since her death, and said they were haunted by the photos Clark took of her.

“So many people have been affected by the pictures, scarred for life and suffering from PTSD, unable to erase the image from their mind.

“No one should have to see their loved one in such a state,” she told the court.

The prosecution, Kim Devins and other family members urged the parole board never to grant Clark parole.

HOLTVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Thirteen people were killed Tuesday when an SUV carrying 25 people & a semitruck collided on a Southern California highway near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Twelve people were found dead when first responders reached the highway, which winds through fields in the agricultural southeastern corner of California. Another person died at a hospital, California Highway Patrol Chief Omar Watson said.

Authorities do not yet know if the driver of the Ford Expedition, who died in the crash, had stopped at a stop sign before crossing into the path of the big rig around 6:15 a.m., Watson said. The gravel-hauling semitruck hit the left side of the SUV, which appeared to have been pushed off the road that’s about 100 miles east of San Diego.

Watson described a grisly scene outside Holtville, a rural town about 11 miles north of the border with farms that grow vegetables & alfalfa for cattle feed. Officers arrived to find that some people had been ejected from the SUV onto the ground. Some of the passengers had pulled themselves from the wreckage, & others who were injured were wandering around.

A Ford Expedition typically seats eight people legally. The CHP did not immediately know why so many occupants had been crammed into the SUV.

“Obviously, that vehicle is not meant for that many people,” Watson said. “It’s unfortunate that that many people were put into that vehicle because there’s not enough safety constraints to safely keep those people in that vehicle.”

The driver of the big rig, which was hauling two trailers of gravel, was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

El Centro Regional Medical Center officials earlier reported there were 15 killed & more people in the SUV. Seven people were taken to that hospital, including one person who later died.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. defense officials say they are worried about an insider attack or other threat from service members involved in securing President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, prompting the FBI to vet all of the 25,000 National Guard troops coming into Washington for the event.

The massive undertaking reflects the extraordinary security concerns that have gripped Washington following the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters. And it underscores fears that some of the very people assigned to protect the city over the next several days could present a threat to the incoming president and other VIPs in attendance.

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told The Associated Press on Sunday that officials are conscious of the potential threat, & he warned commanders to be on the lookout for any problems within their ranks as the inauguration approaches. So far, however, he & other leaders say they have seen no evidence of any threats & officials said the vetting hadn’t flagged any issues that they were aware of.

”We’re continually going through the process, & taking second, third looks at every one of the individuals assigned to this operation,” McCarthy said in an interview after he & other military leaders went through an exhaustive, three-hour security drill in preparation for Wednesday’s inauguration. He said Guard members are also getting training on how to identify potential insider threats.

About 25,000 members of the National Guard are streaming into Washington from across the country — at least two & a half times the number for previous inaugurals. And while the military routinely reviews service members for extremist connections, the FBI screening is in addition to any previous monitoring.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - About 200 children are missing right now in Northeast Ohio.

They may be in danger and they need our help, and a task force is making progress tracking them down.

Operation Safety Net recovered 25 missing children in its first two weeks, and the sting is continuing right now.

The task force, led by U.S. Marshals, is working with local partners to get endangered kids to safety.

“These are kids that have been abused, neglected. Some involved in human trafficking,” said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott.

Elliott has seen the nightmares many missing children have suffered.

“Sometimes the situations they—they go to, believe it or not, may be better than the situations they left from,” Elliott said.

“We’ve had some cases where the mother and or father, or both, may have been prostituting their own child,” he said.

In the past 20 days, U.S. Marshals have worked with Cleveland, East Cleveland and Newburgh Heights police departments to find just over two dozen missing children between 13 and 18 years old.

One in four of those teens they recovered are victims of human trafficking.

“Some we found in Miami, Fla. We have Bedford, Bedford Heights, West Side, East Side, Akron, Mansfield and so on,” Elliott said.

“We’re trying to do our part. A number of these children have gone to the hospital after we’ve recovered them to get checked out, so again this is something we take very seriously,” Elliott said.

Operation Safety Net is focusing on Cleveland and its surrounding cities, but they’re covering all of northern Ohio too with help from the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.

It’s made up of about 350 men and women from 125 different departments across the state.

“I’ll tell you this, it will be something we’ll be doing every year. This is our first time we have done this, it’s been uncharted territory for us, but we’ve had great success,” Elliott said.

Operation Safety Net will continue for several more weeks.

Philadelphia rapper Chynna Rogers, best known as Chynna, died Wednesday (April 8), her family confirmed through her management. “Chynna was deeply loved and will be sorely missed,” the family wrote in a statement. Her cause of death is currently unknown. She was 25.

Chynna Rogers began her career as a model, signing with Ford Models when she was 14. She found a mentor in A$AP Yams as a teenager, and her affiliation with the A$AP Mob ignited her efforts to build a career as a rapper. She released her first singles in the early ’10s, finding online success quickly with 2013’s “Selfie” and 2014’s “Glen Coco.” She followed those with a few EPs, including 2015’s "I’m Not Here, This Isn’t Happening" and 2016’s "Music 2 Die 2." She later said her music was “for angry people with too much pride to show how angry they are.”

Rogers was open about the opiate addiction with which she struggled in the wake of her music taking off, addressing her troubles on her 2016 mixtape "Ninety." She released "Ninety" on her 22nd birthday that August, having accomplished three months of sobriety. She told Pitchfork in a 2018 Rising interview, “It got to the point where I had to do something just to be able to get onstage and do my job. I didn’t like that.” Her final release was December’s "in case i die first" EP.
