A Houston janitor accused of urinating into a fellow employee’s water bottle could be facing additional charges now that 13 other people have come forward with similar complaints.

Lucio Catarino Diaz, 50, was arrested last week & charged with indecent assault & aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a female co-worker accused him of the incident, which she said took place at a medical office building.

“This individual is a sick man,” the unidentified woman told ABC affiliate KTRK TV.

The woman told the station that she first noticed a foul odor in the employee water dispenser in August & decided to drink only from water bottles that she brought from home.

Last month, she came to suspect her own water bottle had been tainted, which was later confirmed by a urinalysis.

SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- At least 13 people were shot or otherwise hit by shrapnel on multiple subway stations along the northbound N train line in Brooklyn Tuesday morning.

Now, a manhunt is underway for a gunman described as wearing a gas mask and an orange construction vest.

It appears at this time to have happened on the train, beginning at the 25th Street station. As the doors closed, the suspect threw smoke bombs and started shooting.

The victims then got off the subway train at the 36th Street station.

At least four of the victims were found at the 36th Street subway station in Sunset Park and another at the 25th Street station in Greenwood Heights just before 8:30 a.m.

Police were looking at as many as four packages initially deemed suspicious, but they were later determined to be unfounded.

The victims were being taken to Maimonides Medical Center, Kings County Hospital and other hospitals.

The suspect was described as a Black male, 5-foot-5 and 175 to 180 pounds.

No arrests have been made, and schools in the area went into a lockdown as the search continues.

An FBI official says they are assisting NYPD and that it remains unclear at this point whether there is any connection to terrorism, but FBI headquarters is monitoring.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A large house fire in Philadelphia early Wednesday killed 13 people, including seven children, and sent two people to hospitals, fire officials said.

Officials said at a news conference later in the morning that there were four smoke detectors in the building but that none were operating.

Firefighters and police responded to the fire at a three-story rowhouse in the city’s Fairmount neighborhood around 6:40 a.m. and found flames coming from the second-floor windows, fire officials said. The house had been converted into two apartments, police said.

The fire was brought under control after less than an hour. WPVI-TV reported that at least one child was seen taken out on a stretcher.

Television news footage showed ladders propped up against the smoke-blackened front of the house, with all its windows missing. Holes remained in the roof where firefighters had broken through.

“I knew some of those kids -- I used to see them playing on the corner,” said Dannie McGuire, 34, fighting back tears as she and Martin Burgert, 35, stood in the doorway of a home around the corner. They had lived there for a decade, she said, “and some of those kids have lived here as long as us.”

“I can’t picture how more people couldn’t get out -- jumping out a window,” she said.

“Losing so many kids is just devastating,” said Mayor Jim Kenney. “Keep these babies in your prayers.”

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Two suicide bombers and gunmen targeted crowds massing near the Kabul airport Thursday, in the waning days of a massive airlift that has drawn thousands of people seeking to flee the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. At least 13 people were killed & 15 wounded.

A U.S. official said the complex attack was “definitely believed” to have been carried out by the Islamic State group, whose affiliate in Afghanistan grew out of disaffected Taliban members who hold an even more extreme view of Islam.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed the blasts, saying one was near an airport entrance and another was a short distance away by a hotel.

The U.S. official said members of the U.S. military were among the wounded.

Even as the area was hit, the official said evacuation flights continued to take off from Kabul airport, which Western governments earlier warned was a target.

One explosion went off in a crowd of people waiting to enter the airport, according to Adam Khan, an Afghan waiting nearby. He said several people appeared to have been killed or wounded, including some who lost body parts.

Several countries urged people to avoid the airport earlier in the day, with one saying there was a threat of a suicide bombing. But just days — or even hours for some nations — before the evacuation effort ends, few appeared to heed the call.

Over the last week, the airport has been the scene of some of the most searing images of the chaotic end of America’s longest war and the Taliban’s takeover, as flight after flight took off carrying those who fear a return to the militants’ brutal rule.

Already, some countries have ended their evacuations & begun to withdraw their soldiers and diplomats, signaling the beginning of the end of one of history’s largest airlifts. The Taliban have pledged not to attack Western forces during the evacuation, but insist the foreign troops must be out by America’s self-imposed deadline of Aug. 31.

Overnight, warnings emerged from Western capitals about a threat from Afghanistan’s Islamic State group affiliate, which likely has seen its ranks boosted by the Taliban’s freeing of prisoners during their blitz across the country.

A man died and two girls, ages 13 & 15, face felony murder charges after police say the girls carjacked the man near Nationals Park on Tuesday, used a stun gun against him & caused the car to flip.

Mohammad Anwar, of Springfield, Virginia, was identified as the victim, police and his family said Wednesday. He was 66.

The suspects are a 13-year-old from Southeast D.C. & a 15-year-old from Fort Washington, Maryland, police said. The juveniles' names were not released.

Documents released Wednesday say the girls were arrested on felony murder & carjacking charges & taken to the Metropolitan Police Department's homicide branch for processing.

Anwar was a father & grandfather with many loved ones in the U.S. and Pakistan, his family said. He was working as an Uber Eats driver at the time of the crime.

“He was a hardworking immigrant who came to the U.S. in 2014 to build a better life for himself and his family. The loss for his family is immeasurable,” they said in a statement that called the crime "senseless."

Anwar is survived by a wife & two adult children in the U.S., & an adult son & four grandchildren in Pakistan, his family said.

(Reuters) - Forensic teams & dozens of heavily armed police & military officials gathered at the cordoned off crime scene dotted with checkpoints after one of the worst mass slayings of Mexican law enforcement officials in years.

Though authorities say crime is widespread, residents were badly shaken by Thursday’s violence. Some houses were strafed with bullets in the small town nestled between verdant hills & corn fields, where most people make a living cultivating crops.

The attackers rounded up bodies of the fallen police officers into a pile & continued to spray them with bullets, according to a local officer at the scene on Friday.

“They finished them off,” said the officer, who declined to give his name. He had lost colleagues in the ambush, he said.

The police convoy came under fire in broad daylight as it patrolled about 40 miles south of the city of Toluca, in a zone where gangs including the Familia Michoacana drug cartel are known to operate, officials said.

The area is in a region of the State of Mexico often hit by gangs from Guerrero & Michoacan, adjoining states that have long been among the most lawless in the country.

Federal authorities are investigating but have yet to give a motive for the killings. Another police officer at the scene said it may have been an act of “retaliation,” without giving more details. Local police would not point to suspects.

HOLTVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Thirteen people were killed Tuesday when an SUV carrying 25 people & a semitruck collided on a Southern California highway near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Twelve people were found dead when first responders reached the highway, which winds through fields in the agricultural southeastern corner of California. Another person died at a hospital, California Highway Patrol Chief Omar Watson said.

Authorities do not yet know if the driver of the Ford Expedition, who died in the crash, had stopped at a stop sign before crossing into the path of the big rig around 6:15 a.m., Watson said. The gravel-hauling semitruck hit the left side of the SUV, which appeared to have been pushed off the road that’s about 100 miles east of San Diego.

Watson described a grisly scene outside Holtville, a rural town about 11 miles north of the border with farms that grow vegetables & alfalfa for cattle feed. Officers arrived to find that some people had been ejected from the SUV onto the ground. Some of the passengers had pulled themselves from the wreckage, & others who were injured were wandering around.

A Ford Expedition typically seats eight people legally. The CHP did not immediately know why so many occupants had been crammed into the SUV.

“Obviously, that vehicle is not meant for that many people,” Watson said. “It’s unfortunate that that many people were put into that vehicle because there’s not enough safety constraints to safely keep those people in that vehicle.”

The driver of the big rig, which was hauling two trailers of gravel, was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

El Centro Regional Medical Center officials earlier reported there were 15 killed & more people in the SUV. Seven people were taken to that hospital, including one person who later died.

The leader of the Proud Boys, who was arrested in Washington shortly before the Capitol riot, previously worked undercover and cooperated with investigators after he was accused of fraud in 2012, court documents show.

Henry “Enrique” Tarrio helped law enforcement in a variety of investigations nearly a decade ago by providing information & going undercover.

The Proud Boys is a far-right extremist group that seized on the Trump administration’s policies & was a major agitator during earlier protests & the Capitol riot on Jan. 6. The Proud Boys have railed against a “deep state” & work to break down the current government system, & so the revelations of Tarrio as a federal informant came as quite a surprise.

The details of Tarrio’s cooperation were found in a transcript of a 2014 hearing in federal court in Florida regarding his sentence for participating in a scheme involving the resale of diabetic test strips.

The prosecutor & Tarrio’s defense attorney both cited Tarrio’s extensive cooperation in arguing that his sentence of 30 months should be cut. The judge agreed to reduce his sentence to 16 months.

“Your Honor, frankly, in all the years, which is now more than 30 that I’ve been doing this, I’ve never had a client as prolific in terms of cooperating in any respect,” said Tarrio’s lawyer at the time, Jeffrey Feiler.

In an interview with Reuters, Tarrio denied ever cooperating with authorities.

After Tarrio’s 2012 indictment, he helped the government prosecute more than a dozen other people, the federal prosecutor told the judge, according to the transcript. Tarrio’s lawyer said he was the first defendant to cooperate in the case & was also involved in a variety of police undercover operations involving things like anabolic steroids & prescription narcotics.

“From day one, he was the one who wanted to talk to law enforcement, wanted to clear his name, wanted to straighten this out so that he could move on with his life. And he has in fact cooperated in a significant way,” the prosecutor said.

New York (CNN) A Columbia University vice president was arrested Monday after allegations that he had "engaged in sexual acts with a child under the age of 13" at his home in New Jersey, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

Marcelo Velez, 56, was arrested at his home in Woodcliff Lake, and charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of sexual assault by sexual contact and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, according to the prosecutor's office.

CNN was unable to immediately identify an attorney for Velez.

The joint investigation between the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and the Woodcliff Lake Police Department began after local police received the allegations on January 3, according to a news release from the prosecutor's office.

Velez is listed as the current vice president for Columbia University's Manhattanville Development on the university's website.

"We have placed Mr. Velez on administrative leave and will cooperate fully with law enforcement officials investigating this matter," a Columbia University spokesperson told CNN.

Velez is being held at Bergen County jail pending his first court appearance in Hackensack, according to the news release. #marcelovelez #marcelovelezarrested #arrested #columbiauniversity #college #vicepresident #sexualassault #childmolester #childabuse #child #minor #lockhimup #jail #prison #newjersey #bergencounty #protectourchildren #tocatchapredator #childpredator #predator

A monthlong mission in Ohio recently turned up 45 missing children and led to 179 arrests, authorities said.

In an operation dubbed Autumn Hope, the US Marshals Service in Ohio and Virginia tracked the children, including a “high-risk” 15-year-old girl from Cleveland who was linked to suspected human trafficking, authorities said Monday.

Twenty other children were also located as authorities checked on their well-being.

During one of the missing children recoveries, a loaded gun was recovered. A 15-year-old boy had two warrants and is suspected in multiple shootings and a murder, authorities said.

Two other juveniles were found in West Virginia during a traffic stop, leading to the arrest of an adult male who was charged with concealment/removal of a minor child in Jackson County.

Autumn Hope was conducted by the marshals in conjunction with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the Central Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force, as well as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and state and local agencies in Ohio.

“My thanks to all personnel who have stepped up for this operation,” said Peter C. Tobin, US Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio. “These are the same personnel who hunt down violent fugitives every day. I’m incredibly proud of them and pleased that they were able to apply those same skills to finding missing children. I know Operation Autumn Hope has made a difference in a lot of young lives.”

The US Marshals have conducted similar operations before, including in Ohio.

Last month, they said 35 missing children, between the ages of 13 and 18 from the Cuyahoga County area, were located during Operation Safety Net. Just over 20 percent of the found cases were tied to human trafficking.

That same month, the marshals also announced the arrest of 262 suspects, including 141 gang members, and the recovery of five missing children in Oklahoma.

Thirty-nine children were found in Georgia during Operation Not Forgotten in August and eight missing kids were recovered in Indiana in September as part of Operation Homecoming.

The marshals have found missing children in 75 percent of cases the agency has received — and 72 percent of those cases were recovered within a week, officials said.

Since 2005, the agency has recovered more than 2,000 missing kids.

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Thirteen people died in a stampede at a disco in Peru after a police raid to enforce the country’s lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, officials said Sunday.

The stampede happened at the Thomas disco in Lima, where about 120 people had gathered for a party on Saturday night, the Interior Ministry said.

People tried to escape through the only door of the second-floor disco, trampling one another and becoming trapped in the confined space, according to authorities.

After the stampede, police had to force open the door.

Franco Asensios, one of those who attended the party, told local radio RPP that the police raid started at 9 p.m. and that authorities told the party-goers to let the women exit first.

“People got excited and started to go down, and then they said that the people in front were suffocating,” he said.

Police have detained 23 people. Police chief Gen. Orlando Velasco said no firearms or tear gas were used during the raid.

Night clubs have been prohibited from operating since March because of the pandemic. Peru started lifting quarantine restrictions on June 30 in an effort to get the economy moving again, and the daily reported number of virus infections has doubled to more than 9,000 in recent weeks.

Peru has reported about 27,500 deaths from the new coronavirus.
