Two people were shot, more than 100 people were arrested and 13 police officers were injured as crowds broke windows and looted stores along Michigan Avenue and on the Near North Side overnight and into Monday morning.

Supt. David Brown called the looting “pure criminality” in a news conference Monday morning, not connected to any protest.

“Criminals took to the streets with the confidence that there would be no consequences for their actions,” Brown said, adding that police would aggressively pursue cases against people involved in the looting.

“You have no right, no right to take and destroy the property of others,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said at the news conference. “We are coming for you. ... I don’t care what justification was given for this. There is no justification.”

The police have started a neighborhood protection plan, and Brown said a team of detectives has been assigned to scour security footage of all incidents.

Access to downtown will be restricted from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., effective Monday night, Brown said.

For several hours this morning, there were no bus or train service in the area bordered by Fullerton and Ashland avenues and Cermak road for several hours, the CTA said. The transit agency was in the process of restoring normal service shortly before 8 a.m.

All downtown bridges except LaSalle Street were raised. The Chicago Department of Transportation said they were being lowered again as of 7:15 a.m., but ongoing street closures could be expected throughout the downtown area.

Brown said “the seeds for the shameful destruction we saw last night” started with a police-involved shooting in Englewood Sunday afternoon. About 2:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a man with a gun. He fled as they arrived, Brown said, and fired at officers. They returned fire, striking the man, who was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital and is expected to survive. The 20-year-old man had previously faced charges of domestic battery, reckless conduct and child endangerment, Brown said.

After the shooting, a crowd gathered in the area. “Tempers flared, fueled by misinformation,” Brown said. Shortly after that, police became aware of “several social media posts” about looting planned downtown. He said the department reacted by deploying 400 officers to the downtown area.

The family of Elijah McClain is going after the city of Aurora and 13 of its police officers, claiming they're all to blame for his 2019 death.

McClain's parents just filed the lawsuit in Colorado claiming the city, the cops, a paramedic, and a doctor should be held responsible for the August 24, 2019 fatal incident based on their "needless use of excessive force and torture."

According to new legal docs, obtained by TMZ, the family says Elijah was listening to music on a short walk home from the corner store "when Aurora police officers grabbed, tackled, and assaulted him."

In the lawsuit, they claim officers "continued to brutalize Elijah for nearly eighteen minutes—approximately fifteen minutes of which he was handcuffed." They also allege the force the officers used against Elijah included "compressing his neck and the blood flow to his brain with two consecutive carotid holds, cranking his left shoulder with an armbar hammerlock that caused it to repeatedly pop."

Describing the arrest even further ... the family claims Elijah vomited after they slammed him to the ground. According to the docs, another officer allegedly "jammed his knee into Elijah's arm for minutes on end" with the sole purpose of inflicting pain and eventually separating Elijah's biceps and triceps muscles.

Then the paramedics arrived, but the family claims things only got worse. In the suit, they claim an EMT "involuntarily injected him with a massive dose of ketamine" even though he was not experiencing any medical condition that would have required ketamine ... a powerful sedative.

Minutes after they injected him with the sedative, Elijah stopped breathing, had no pulse and never regained consciousness before dying a few days later.

As we reported ... Aurora PD officers stopped Elijah while responding to a call about a suspicious person walking the streets wearing a ski mask and waving his arms. His family had previously said he commonly wore the mask to keep warm.

Body-camera footage of the incident shows Elijah telling the cops, "Let go of me. I am an introvert. Please respect the boundaries that I am speaking." His final words -- documented at the beginning of the lawsuit from start to finish -- popped up on social media posts demanding justice.

Gov. Jared Polis had said back in June the case would be reopened with a special prosecutor appointed to the case. Three cops were fired last month and one other resigned after a photo surfaced mocking Elijah's death. Three of those four cops are named in the lawsuit.

Video After The Jump

Wearing an orange jumpsuit and a clear face shield to protect against coronavirus, former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. pleaded guilty on Monday to 13 counts of first-degree murder. The string of murders in the 1970s and '80s terrorized California, and the suspect who committed them became known as the Golden State Killer.

DeAngelo, 74, sat in a wheelchair as he rasped out "yes" and "I admit" to the charges, after prosecutors described the grisly circumstances of each crime. Otherwise, he hardly spoke and did not look at the victims' families.

"Mr. DeAngelo is acknowledging his guilt for the heinous crimes he has committed," said Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton. "There is really nothing that could give full justice because he has committed horrendous acts and murder up and down the state of California. But at least we can now begin the process — after decades — to bring some closure to families."

The hearing took place in a makeshift courtroom within a ballroom at Sacramento State University, NPR's Eric Westervelt reports from the scene. The chairs in the gallery were spaced 10 feet apart for social distancing, attorneys wore face shields, and sheriff's deputies wore black face masks.

The long-unsolved murders grabbed headlines anew in 2018 when law enforcement officers announced they had identified DeAngelo as the suspect using DNA from a publicly available genealogy website to crack the case.

Investigators used the DNA evidence from one of the murder scenes to create a profile of the killer, which they then uploaded to the genealogy website. That site linked the killer's profile to a distant relative of DeAngelo's. Investigators then confirmed the link by collecting DeAngelo's DNA from his car door and a discarded tissue, according to The Associated Press.

DeAngelo's attorneys struck a plea deal with prosecutors that means DeAngelo will avoid the death penalty. California has not executed an inmate since 2006. In March 2019, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order instituting a moratorium on the death penalty in the state. DeAngelo will face consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole.

Kobe Bryant’s daughter Gianna also died in the Calabasas helicopter crash that killed their father.

Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, nicknamed Gigi, was also onboard the private helicopter when it went down on Sunday, reps for the former basketball player told TMZ Sports.

Emergency personnel responded but no one on board survived. Five people are confirmed dead, TMZ reported. The outlet said that Bryant’s wife, Vanessa Bryant — with whom he shares all four children — was not onboard.

Sources told ESPN that the helicopter was headed to a travel basketball game for Gianna, and that the other passengers were another player and their parent.

Bryant is survived by Vanessa, 37, and their daughters Natalia, 17, Bianka, 3, and Capri, 7 months.

13 People Shot At Chicago Memorial Party (Video)

12353289273?profile=original

Video After The Jump

CHICAGO (AP) — A shooting early Sunday at a house party held in honor of someone who was killed in April left 13 people wounded, four of them critically, Chicago police said.

The shooting stemmed from a dispute at the memorial party, Chief of Patrol Fred Waller said at an early morning news conference. He said shots were first fired just after 12:30 a.m.

The victims range in age from 16 to 48 and suffered “different and various gunshot wounds to their bodies.”

Two people were being questioned, Waller said. One of them was arrested with a weapon, he said, while the other was wounded. Waller said police recovered a revolver.

“It looked like they were just shooting randomly at people as they exited the party,” Waller said.

Waller did not provide details on the person who was being memorialized, including who the person was.

Waller described three different shooting scenes at the residential location in the city’s Englewood neighborhood, a predominantly low-income stretch of the city roughly 10 miles (16 kilometers) southwest of downtown that has high crime. The shooting started inside, then more shots were fired as people began spilling out of the house. Shots were also fired at a third place nearby, Waller said.

He described the shooting as an “isolated incident.”

The shooting comes as the city has been on the verge of closing out 2019 with sizable drops in shootings and homicides for the third straight year. Through roughly mid-December, about 475 people were killed, compared with 549 in 2018, which is a 14% drop. In 2016, the number of homicides was roughly 750, according to Chicago police data.

The declines happened citywide, including in historically high-crime areas. Still, Chicago still has more violent crime than New York and Los Angeles. Both cities had about 1,800 shooting victims combined, while Chicago has had about 2,500 this year, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Police have credited Chicago’s drop in crime to the use of technology used to predict where shootings might occur, while experts also credit anti-violence programs that offer jobs and gang conflict mediation.

(Washington Post) “The Shape of Water” dominated the nominations for the 90th Academy Awards on Tuesday morning, landing 13, one shy of the record. Guillermo del Toro’s grown-up fairy tale romance between a mute woman and a misunderstood aquatic monster is up for best picture, best director, best screenplay and acting awards for Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins, in addition to a number of technical categories.

Not far behind was “Dunkirk,” Christopher Nolan’s war epic, which landed eight noms, including best picture, director (Nolan’s first for directing) and cinematography but no acting prizes.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” has been gaining steam over the course of an awards season that has seen it win big prizes at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards. That movie, about a woman who takes on the police after the murder of her daughter, is up for seven prizes, including best picture, lead actress for Frances McDormand and two supporting actor nominations, for Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson.

The Oscars made history Tuesday morning with the nomination of “Mudbound” cinematographer Rachel Morrison. She’s the first woman to be nominated in that category.

Jimmy Kimmel will once again be hosting the ceremony — no doubt doing everything he can to make sure the correct winners are announced after last year’s “La La Land”–“Moonlight” debacle. We’ll see if he can pull it off March 4 on ABC.

The list of nominations for the 90th Academy Awards

Best picture
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

“The Post”
“The Shape of Water”
“Dunkirk”
“Lady Bird”
“Get Out”
“Call Me By Your Name”
“Phantom Thread”
“Darkest Hour”

Immediate reaction: Despite some controversy, “Three Billboards” is coming into the Oscars race with major momentum, after sweeping the SAG Awards and taking home the Golden Globe for best drama. But it has stiff competition from “The Shape of Water,” Guillermo del Toro’s fantastical romance, which is up for more awards.

Also notable: The nomination of Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” which isn’t your typical awards contender. The sleeper hit horror film was considered by some to be a genre movie, which may be how it ended up nominated as a comedy at the Golden Globes. This nomination is a testament to its impressive genre-bending and satirical brilliance.

Best actress in a leading role
Frances McDormand, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”
Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”
Margot Robbie, “I, Tonya”
Meryl Streep, “The Post”
Immediate reaction: Like the best actor race, this competition seems pretty much locked with McDormand taking home the award for her role as an enraged mother trying to get to the bottom of her daughter’s brutal murder. On Sunday, McDormand won the SAG Award for her portrayal, just weeks after taking home the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama. If there’s a long-shot to beat her it’s Saoirse Ronan, who took home the equivalent prize for comedy.

Best actor in a leading role
Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour”

Timothee Chalamet, “Call Me By Your Name”
Daniel Day-Lewis, “Phantom Thread”
Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out
Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”
Immediate reaction: We can call this race right now: Oldman’s portrayal of Winston Churchill — complete with major prosthetics and spot-on accent — is winning all the awards. Meanwhile, this is Day-Lewis’s last shot at an Oscar, supposedly. He has gone on record saying that “Phantom Thread” was his final film. This is his sixth nomination, and he’s won three. Meanwhile there was no love for James Franco in “The Disaster Artist,” despite the fact that he was a contender at just about every other awards show. Could this have something to do with the recent allegations of sexually exploitative behavior against him?

Best director
Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk”

Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water”
Jordan Peele, “Get Out”
Greta Gerwig, “Lady Bird”
Paul Thomas Anderson, “Phantom Thread”
Immediate reaction: Shortly after Natalie Portman poked fun at the all-male director lineup at the Golden Globes, the Oscars has responded with a much more diverse field. Gerwig is now the fifth woman to be nominated for best director, and Peele is the fifth black director. It may come as a shock that Nolan — the director of “Inception,” “Memento” and the “Dark Knight” trilogy — has never won an Oscar. Could this be his year, with his nomination for the war epic “Dunkirk”?

Actress in a supporting role
Allison Janney, “I, Tonya”

Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird”
Octavia Spencer, “The Shape of Water”
Mary J. Blige, “Mudbound”
Lesley Manville, “Phantom Thread”
Immediate reaction: We can call this the battle of the moms, because the front-runners play searingly memorable mothers. This is Janney’s first Oscar nomination, and she’s the likely winner for portraying the brutal and vindictive mother of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” But Metcalf certainly has a shot, as well, for her more nuanced role as the selectively compassionate matriarch in “Lady Bird.” Then there’s Mary J. Blige, who disappeared into her role in “Mudbound” as a wife and mother just trying to get by and keep her kids safe in the Jim Crow South.

Actor in a supporting role
Sam Rockwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

Willem Dafoe, “The Florida Project”
Richard Jenkins, “The Shape of Water”
Christopher Plummer, “All the Money in the World”
Woody Harrelson, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Immediate reaction: There isn’t a lot of drama with these acting categories. Rockwell has won the Golden Globe and the SAG Award for playing a racist rube of a police officer in “Three Billboards.” Given that, he’s widely thought to be the favorite. One of the big shockers of the morning was the fact that his co-star, Harrelson, is also up for a prize. It’s also notable that Plummer made the list. The Oscar winner is up for “All the Money in the World,” a movie he joined after it was already shot — the result of director Ridley Scott deciding to replace Kevin Spacey after the actor was accused of sexual assault.

Best animated feature film
“Coco”

“Loving Vincent”
“The Breadwinner”
“Ferdinand”
“Boss Baby”

Immediate reaction: “The Boss Baby” again!? The movie also made a surprise appearance on the Golden Globes animation list, proving what a subpar year this was for animated features. Still, the absence of “The Lego Batman Movie” seems like a snub. As always, Pixar occupies one of the nomination spots, alongside a couple more artsy picks. If this award is based purely on technical achievement, then the drama “Loving Vincent” should have a fighting chance. Each of the film’s 65,000 frames is an oil painting, created by a classically trained artist mimicking Vincent van Gogh’s work.

Best adapted screenplay
“Call Me By Your Name,” James Ivory

“Mudbound,” Virgil Williams and Dee Rees
“Molly’s Game,” Aaron Sorkin
“The Disaster Artist,” Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber
“Logan,” Scott Frank, James Mangold and Michael Green
Immediate reaction: “Molly’s Game” marked Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut. He wasn’t singled out in that category, but he appears here doing what he does best: writing. This is his third nomination, after having won once already for “The Social Network.” This is the lone nomination for “The Disaster Artist.” It will be vying against “Logan,” which is a bit of an outlier — it’s not often you see a superhero movie up for best screenplay. Although Rees didn’t make the cut for best director, she still got some love from the Academy for her impressive work adapting the screenplay from the novel by Hillary Jordan. Rees is the first black woman in 45 years — and second ever — to be nominated for a screenplay Oscar. The first was Suzanne de Passe for “Lady Sings the Blues” in 1973.

Best original screenplay
“Get Out,” Jordan Peele

“Lady Bird,” Greta Gerwig
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Martin McDonagh
“The Shape of Water,” Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor
“The Big Sick,” Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani
Immediate reaction: There are a lot of familiar names on this list, as Peele, Gerwig and del Toro are all in the best director category as well. It’s a pleasant surprise to see the summer sleeper “The Big Sick” make the list after it was shut out during the Golden Globes. The romantic comedy is based on the real-life relationship of its husband-and-wife writing team.

Best foreign language film
“Loveless”

“A Fantastic Woman”
“The Square”
“The Insult”
“On Body and Soul”

Immediate reaction: “A Fantastic Woman” is getting the most buzz in this category. The Chilean film follows a transgender woman navigating the loss of her boyfriend. The big surprise here is the absence of Germany’s submission, “In the Fade,” which won the Golden Globe and made waves thanks to Diane Kruger’s powerhouse lead performance.

Best documentary
“Faces Places”

“Strong Island”
“Last Men in Aleppo”
“Icarus”
“Abacus: Small Enough to Jail”
Immediate reaction: It’s a shock that “Jane” didn’t make the cut. Brett Morgan’s film about primatologist Jane Goodall could have been the favorite to win. Its absence makes way for the French crowd-pleaser “Faces Places,” which follows the unlikely friendship of the 89-year-old director Agnes Varda and the young muralist JR during a road trip through rural France. Meanwhile, Netflix got a boost in this category thanks to nominations for “Strong Island” and “Icarus.” The streaming network was also behind the feature film “Mudbound,” which is up for four awards.

Best original song
“Remember Me,” “Coco”

“Mighty River,” “Mudbound”
“This Is Me,” “The Greatest Showman”
“Mystery of Love,” “Call Me By Your Name”
“Stand Up for Something,” “Marshall”
Immediate reaction: Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have a shot at winning this award two years in a row. The pair, which recently won the Golden Globe for “This Is Me,” also won the Oscar last year for “City of Stars” from “La La Land.” The nomination for “Mighty River” means that Mary J. Blige will be up for an award in two categories. The Grammy winner co-wrote the song with Raphael Saadiq.

Best cinematography
“Blade Runner 2049,” Roger Deakins

“The Shape of Water,” Dan Laustsen
“Dunkirk,” Hoyte Van Hoytema
“Mudbound,” Rachel Morrison
“Darkest Hour,” Bruno Delbonnel

Immediate reaction:
There are two headlines in this category. The first is the fact that Morrison’s presence marks the first time a woman has been nominated for cinematography. The second is Deakins, who is up for his 14th Academy Award and has never won. Will this be his year? It’s certainly possible. His work on “Blade Runner” was stunning; plus it would be a long time coming.

Best production design
“The Shape of Water,” Paul D. Austerberry

“Blade Runner 2049,” Dennis Gassner
“Dunkirk,” Nathan Crowley
“Darkest Hour,” Sarah Greenwood
“Beauty and the Beast,” Sarah Greenwood

Immediate reaction: It’s hard to find much fault in this category where production designers created some memorable visual worlds. This is Austerberry’s first nomination, but he has a good shot for his work on “The Shape of Water,” recreating a midcentury America punctuated by fantastical elements. His big competition is from Gassner who has won once before, decades ago for “Bugsy,” and conjured up a stunning futuristic world with cities filled with fluorescent sensory overload alongside post-apocalyptic desertscapes.

Best film editing
“Dunkirk,” Lee Smith

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” John Gregory
“The Shape of Water,” Sidney Wolinsky
“Baby Driver,” Jonathan Amos and Paul Machliss
“I, Tonya,” Tatiana S. Riegel

Immediate reaction: This is a solid list, though it would have been nice to see “All the Money in the World” editor Claire Simpson in the mix. Her work may not have been as flashy as, say, Smith’s, but she managed to reedit all of the scenes with Kevin Spacey — who was replaced by Christopher Plummer — in just nine days.

Best original score
“The Shape of Water,” Alexandre Desplat

“Dunkirk,” Hans Zimmer
“Phantom Thread,” Jonny Greenwood
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Carter Burwell
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” John Williams

Immediate reaction: There are a lot of usual suspects in this category, with nine-time nominee (and one-time winner) Desplat and 10-time nominee (and one-time winner) Zimmer, plus the legendary Williams of “Star Wars” fame. He’s already won five and could have easily been nominated for “The Post” as well. But this is the first nomination for longtime Paul Thomas Anderson collaborator Greenwood, who also happens to be a member of Radiohead.

Best visual effects
“War for the Planet of the Apes,” Joe Letteri, Daniel Barrett, Dan Lemmon and Joel Whist

“Blade Runner 2049,” John Nelson, Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert and Richard R. Hoover
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Ben Morris, Mike Mulholland, Neal Scanlan and Chris Corbould
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” Christopher Townsend, Guy Williams, Jonathan Fawkner and Dan Sudick
“Kong: Skull Island,” Stephen Rosenbaum, Jeff White, Scott Benza and Mike Meinardus
Immediate reaction: This is the category where the Academy spreads the love to some of the less typical nominees. There’s simply no other place where “Kong: Skull Island” would have a shot, but the movie impressively conjured up a land where massive beasts, monsters and gorillas roam. Most likely, though, the winner here will be “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which featured motion-capture performances from Andy Serkis and Steve Zahn that were so expressive that they made the ape characters more sympathetic than the humans.

Best costume design
“Phantom Thread,” Mark Bridges

“Beauty and the Beast,” Jacqueline Durran
“The Shape of Water,” Luis Sequeira
“Darkest Hour,” Jacqueline Durran
“Victoria and Abdul,” Consolata Boyle
Immediate reaction: Of course “Phantom Thread” would make the list. The movie follows a fastidious fashion designer who dreams up gorgeously lush dresses. Still, it’s sad to see that Katharine Graham’s caftan in “The Post” didn’t get a mention.

Best makeup and hair styling
“Wonder,” Arjen Tuiten

“Darkest Hour,” Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick
“Victoria and Abdul,” Daniel Phillips and Lou Sheppard
Immediate reaction: Gary Oldman is known for being a chameleon; still it was no small task turning the svelte actor into a corpulent World War II-era Winston Churchill for “Darkest Hour.” You can see why that movie is shaping up to be the front-runner.

Best sound editing
“Baby Driver,” Julian Slater

“Dunkirk,” Richard King and Alex Gibson
“Blade Runner 2049,” Mark Mangini and Theo Green
“The Shape of Water,” Nathan Robitaille and Nelson Ferreira
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Matthew Wood and Ren Klyce

Best sound mixing
“Dunkirk”

“The Shape of Water”
“Baby Driver”
“Blade Runner 2049”
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”

Best documentary short subject
“Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405”

“Edith+Eddie”
“Knife Skills”
“Heroin(e)”
“Traffic Stop”

Best animated short film
“Lou”

“Dear Basketball”
“Negative Space”
“Garden Party”
“Revolting Rhymes”

Best live action short film
“My Nephew Emmett”

“DeKalb Elementary”
“The Silent Child”
“Watu Wote / All of Us”
“The Eleven O’Clock”

Driss Oukabir is believed to have rented the van used in the attack

Video After The Jump

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A white van jumped up onto a sidewalk and sped down a pedestrian zone Thursday in Barcelona’s historic Las Ramblas district, swerving from side to side as it plowed into tourists and residents. Police said 13 people were killed and more than 50 wounded in the terror attack.

The attack left people sprawled out on the ground in the city in northeastern Spain, some spattered with blood, others with broken limbs. As witnesses and emergency workers tried to help the wounded, police brandishing hand guns launched a search of side streets amid reports that at least one perpetrator and maybe more were holed up in a nearby bar.

Police immediately cordoned off the city’s broad avenue, which is popular with tourists, and ordered stores and nearby Metro and train stations to close. They asked people to stay away from the area so as not to get in the way of emergency services. A helicopter hovered over the scene.

A few hours later, Catalan police tweeted: “We have arrested one man and we are treating him as a terrorist.” They said no one was holed up in a Barcelona bar but began to evacuate stores on the sprawling avenue where dozens of people had taken cover.

State-owned broadcaster RTVE reported that investigators think two vans were used — one for the attack and a second as a getaway vehicle.

Las Ramblas, a street of stalls and shops that cuts through the center of Barcelona, is one of the city’s top tourist destinations. People walk down a wide, pedestrian path in the center of the street but cars can travel on either side.

12352712295?profile=original

A taxi driver who witnessed the attack, Oscar Cano, told TV3 the van jumped onto the central pedestrian area at a high speed and swerved from side to side.

In photographs and videos, at least five people could be seen lying on the ground in the street Thursday afternoon, being helped by police and others. Other video recorded people screaming as they fled the van.

Keith Fleming, an American who lives in Barcelona, was watching TV in his building just off Las Ramblas when he heard a noise and went out to his balcony.

“I saw women and children just running and they looked terrified,” he said.

He said there was a bang — possibly from someone rolling down a store shutter — and more people ran by. Then police arrived and pushed everyone a full block away. Even people leaning out of doors were being told to go back inside, he said.

Fleming said regular police with guns drawn and riot police were at the end of his block, which was soon deserted.

“It’s just kind of a tense situation,” Fleming said. “Clearly, people were scared.”

Carol Augustin, a manager at La Palau Moja, an 18th-century place on Las Ramblas that houses government offices and a tourism center, said the van passed right in front of the building.

“We saw everything. People started screaming and running into the office. It was such a chaotic situation. There were families with children. The police made us close the doors and wait inside,” she said.

U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter: “The United States condemns the terror attack in Barcelona, Spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help. Be tough & strong, we love you!”

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson offered assistance to authorities in Spain and said U.S. diplomats in Spain were helping Americans there. He vowed the United States would never relent in tracking down terror suspects and holding them to account.

“Terrorists around the world should know that the United States and our allies are resolved to find you and bring you to justice,” Tillerson said in a statement.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the U.K. “stands with Spain against terror.” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said “this cowardly attack has deliberately targeted those enjoying life and sharing time with family and friends. We will never be cowed by such barbarism.”

Spain has been on a security alert one step below the maximum since June 2015 following attacks elsewhere in Europe and Africa. Spanish police have also been involved in the arrests of more than 200 suspected jihadis since then.

Cars, trucks and vans have been the weapon of choice in multiple extremist attacks in Europe in the last year.

The most deadly was the driver of a tractor-trailer who targeted Bastille Day revelers in the southern French city of Nice in July 2016, killing 86 people. In December 2016, 12 people died after a driver used a hijacked trick to drive into a Christmas market in Berlin.

There have been multiple attacks this year in London, where a man in a rented SUV plowed into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing four people before he ran onto the grounds of Parliament and stabbed an unarmed police officer to death in March.

Four other men drove onto the sidewalk of London Bridge, unleashing a rampage with knives that killed eight people in June. Another man also drove into pedestrians leaving a London mosque later in June.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Stephen Curry let it fly from the top of the arc, backpedaled as his record-breaking 3-ball dropped and then wildly began bobbing his head and shuffling his feet with the swagger of a two-time reigning MVP.

Add another remarkable achievement to a long list of them for Curry: most 3-pointers in one game.

The star guard sank 13 to set an NBA mark — one game after missing all his 3-point tries for the first time in two years — and the Golden State Warriors beat the winless New Orleans Pelicans 116-106 on Monday.

"This was a special night," Curry said.

73790328?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

He finished with 46 points, three days after his league-record streak of 157 games with at least one 3 was snapped when he went 0 for 10 on 3-point tries in a 117-97 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I was hard on myself in practice the last two days. I had pretty good shooting sessions," he said. "I don't overreact to games like that whether I go 0 for 10 or 2 for 12 or whatever it is. My process is the same, but I had another level of focus the last two days trying to get my rhythm back and see the ball go in."

Curry shot 13 of 17 from beyond the arc in his seventh career game with double-digit 3s. He broke the mark with 2:23 to go and bobbed his head in delight as the crowd roared.

Curry shared the previous 3-point record of 12 with Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall.

"Nothing you can do about it. He was being Steph," Pelicans star Anthony Davis said.

Grabbing back the spotlight from new Golden State star Kevin Durant, Curry raised his right arm and pumped his chest all night, howling and pointing as one shot fell after another. He went 16 for 26 overall in his first 40-point performance after leading the NBA with 13 last season.

Warriors fans enjoyed every minute of it, chanting "M-V-P! M-V-P!"

"That was quite a show. Not at all surprising the way Steph bounces back from bad nights," Golden State coach Steve Kerr said.

Klay Thompson had 24 points with two 3s as the Splash Brothers looked far more in sync from long range at last. Durant added 22 for the Warriors.

Davis had 33 points and 13 rebounds for New Orleans (0-7), which along with the 76ers (0-6) are the NBA's lone teams still without a victory. Davis gave the Pelicans a 73-72 lead on a turnaround hook shot with 4:14 left in the third quarter.

Davis had 45 points, 17 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in the teams' initial matchup on Oct. 28.

Draymond Green had his second double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 assists for the Warriors, who were back at Oracle Arena after they embarrassed the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-96 there in Durant's first game against his former team last Thursday.

Thompson — 2 for 10 against the Lakers from 3-point range, a combined 0 of 13 vs. Phoenix and Portland and 9 of 46 overall (19.6 percent) this season coming in — missed his first three attempts before hitting from the baseline late in the second quarter as the sellout crowd went crazy.

73790299?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

Curry knocked down his first 3-point attempt at the 7:29 mark of the first quarter. He received a technical with 1:45 left in the third for arguing he was fouled by Davis on a 3-point attempt.

Video After The Jump

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump continues to make the news for all the wrong reasons.

The Daily Beast reports that during the 13th season of NBC reality television show "The Apprentice," also know as "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice,' Trump kept referring to Lil Jon as "Uncle Tom."

73789228?profile=original

The controversy began during a segment in which the rapper dressed as Uncle Sam to promote hair-care products.

“Look, he’s Uncle Tom!” one show staffer recalls the business mogul saying twice.

"Uncle Tom" is a term used to describe black men who are excessively obedient or servile to white people.

73789292?profile=original

Arsenio Hall, who was a guest judge during the episode, heard Trump using the offensive term and made it known he didn't like it.

“We kept trying to explain to [Trump] that that’s not a word you can use, that it’s offensive,” another Apprentice employee told The Daily Beast. “One of the executive producers had to call him up directly to [plead with] him not to say it, and Trump was like, ‘No, that’s a saying, it’s Uncle Tom.’ There are several takes in the footage of the dailies that has him trying to figure out the difference between ‘Uncle Tom’ and Uncle Sam. He just couldn’t grasp that it was offensive… When [Trump] decides he wants to do something, that’s his way.”

Lil Jon addressed the issue via his Twitter account on Friday, October 14th.

73789306?profile=original

"When this 'Uncle Tom' incident happened on Celebrity Apprentice in the boardroom several of my cast mates and I addressed Mr. Trump immediately when we heard the comment," he wrote. "I can't say if he knew what he was actually saying or not but he did stop using that term once we explained it's offensiveness. I also want to be clear that I don't agree with many of the statements Mr. Trump has said during his current run for President."

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Conor McGregor backed up every word he ever said to Jose Aldo with one spectacular punch.

McGregor stopped Aldo with a left hand to the jaw just 13 seconds into the first round Saturday night, claiming the undisputed featherweight title at UFC 194.

McGregor (19-2) finished the fight with an electrifying exchange shortly after the opening bell, slipping Aldo's lead right and cracking the champ with his formidable punching power.

12351889670?profile=original

Aldo (25-2) actually finished his punch and hit McGregor with a left, but the champ fell senseless to the ground. McGregor pounced, only to be pulled off in his fifth consecutive knockout victory.

"What I say happens, happens," McGregor said. "There is no doubt now."

Aldo had won 18 consecutive fights over the last 10 years, but not even the only previous 145-pound champion in UFC history could survive McGregor.

The loquacious Irish brawler goaded Aldo throughout the promotion of their delayed bout, only to earn a victory that was even more dramatic than he predicted. McGregor's victory was the fastest title fight in UFC history, surpassing Ronda Rousey's 14-second win over Cat Zingano at UFC 184 in February.

"Precision beats power, and timing beats speed," McGregor said. "Jose was a phenomenal champion. He deserved to go a little bit longer, but I still feel at the end of the day, precision beats power and timing beats speed. That's what happened."

12351889700?profile=original

Luke Rockhold also claimed the UFC middleweight title with a bloody fourth-round stoppage of previously unbeaten champion Chris Weidman in front of a frenzied crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

But the sellout crowd was packed with thousands of screaming Irish fans who traveled to see whether their braggadocious countryman could back up his talk. The fans celebrated long after McGregor left the cage, singing and carousing and forming a lengthy conga line.

McGregor, a former plumber who was fairly late to take up mixed martial arts as a career, has won 15 consecutive fights since November 2010 while building an international celebrity on his combination of MMA skill and verbal dexterity. He is 7-0 in UFC bouts, stopping all but one opponent with his vaunted punching power.

McGregor picked one of the UFC's most daunting targets in Aldo, who had made seven consecutive title defenses. The Irishman targeted the imperious Brazilian champion with a steady stream of trash talk and entertaining antics, infuriating Aldo while making himself into a pay-per-view draw and arguably the UFC's second-biggest star behind Rousey.

McGregor and Aldo were scheduled to meet at UFC 189 in July, but Aldo pulled out with an injury two weeks before the bout. McGregor stopped Chad Mendes to win the interim title belt but never stopped talking about Aldo.

Aldo hadn't fought since October 2014 due to injury. After recovering from the knockout, Aldo called for a rematch in the cage, saying through an interpreter that it "wasn't a real fight."

"The trash talking didn't affect me," Aldo said. "I don't care what he says."

12351890473?profile=original

For just the third time in UFC history, two undisputed title belts changed hands on the same card.

12351890297?profile=original

Rockhold (15-2) finished his own championship victory with brute style, pounding Weidman on the ground late in the third and again in the fourth. When referee Herb Dean finally pulled Rockhold off the bloodied Weidman (13-1), the new champion collapsed face-down on the canvas in relief.

12351891087?profile=original

"It's hard to take this all in," Rockhold said. "I went through hell to get here, but it's all worth it now."

Rockhold, a native of Santa Cruz, California, has stopped his last five opponents.

He seized control of the fight when Weidman attempted to throw a wheel kick in the third round. Rockhold dodged it and took the champ to the ground — the first time Weidman, a renowned wrestler, had ever been taken down in a UFC fight.

12351890877?profile=original

"He shouldn't be trying that kind of stuff on me," Rockhold said.

Weidman had ruled atop the division since dethroning long-reigning champ Anderson Silva in 2013 and breaking Silva's leg in the rematch. Injuries limited Weidman's activity, but Rockhold established himself as the clear No. 1 contender with four straight UFC victories since a testosterone-aided Vitor Belfort stopped him in Rockhold's only loss in 14 fights since November 2007.

UFC 194 concluded an unprecedented three-day stretch of three fight cards on the Las Vegas Strip.

Yoel Romero won an entertaining split decision over Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in a meeting of middleweight contenders. Demian Maia also dominated Iceland's Gunnar Nelson with his peerless jiu-jitsu to win a wide decision, and veteran bantamweight Urijah Faber finished the preliminary bouts with a bruising win over Frankie Saenz.
