Dead (74)

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Using a smoke bomb and a handgun, a hooded gunman dressed all in black opened fire during “college night” at a country music bar in Southern California, killing 12 people and sending hundreds fleeing in terror, authorities said Thursday. The gunman was later found dead.

Authorities said the motive for the attack Wednesday night was under investigation.

Patrons screamed in fear, shouted “Get down!” and used barstools to smash second-floor windows and jump to safety as gunfire erupted at the Borderline Bar & Grill, a popular hangout for college students. The dead included 11 people inside the bar and a sheriff’s sergeant who was the first officer inside the door, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

“It’s a horrific scene in there,” Dean said in the parking lot. “There’s blood everywhere.”

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that authorities had identified the gunman as Ian David Long. The official said the 29-year-old man deployed a smoke device and used a .45-caliber handgun.

The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The massacre was the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since 17 students and teachers were slain at a Parkland, Florida, high school nine months ago. It also came less than two weeks after a gunman killed 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. That, it turn, closely followed the series of pipe bombs mailed to critics of President Donald Trump.

Trump praised police for their “great bravery” in the California attack and said, “God bless all of the victims and families of the victims.”

The gunman was tall and wearing all black with a hood and his face partly covered, witnesses told TV stations. He first fired on a person working the door, then appeared to shoot at random at people inside, they said.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus and a passing highway patrolman were responding to several 911 calls when they arrived at the Borderline at about 11:20 p.m., the sheriff said. They heard gunfire and went inside.

Helus was immediately hit with multiple gunshots, Dean said. The highway patrolman pulled Helus out, then waited as a SWAT team and scores more officers arrived. Helus died early Thursday at a hospital.

By the time they entered the bar again, the gunfire had stopped, according to the sheriff. They found 12 people dead inside, including the gunman. It was not immediately clear how the gunman died, Dean said.

The shooting happened on college night. Two-step lessons in country dancing were being offered Wednesday at the Borderline, according to its website.

The bar, which includes a large dance hall with a stage and a pool room along with several smaller areas for eating and drinking, is popular with students from nearby California Lutheran University who enjoy country music. It is also close to several other universities, including California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, Pepperdine University in Malibu and Moorpark College in Moorpark.

Nick Steinwender, a Cal Lutheran student body president, told KTLA-TV he immediately started receiving messages about the shooting, and he and his roommate went to the scene to offer rides back to campus or moral support.

“It’s going to be a very somber day,” Steinwender said. “I know we don’t have all the details in yet, but you know, it just feels like it’s an attack on our community. You know, I think it’s going to be something that we’re going to have to come together and move past.”

When the gunman entered, people screamed and fled to all corners of the bar, and a few threw barstools through the windows and helped dozens to escape, witnesses said.

Video accessed by the AP showed law enforcement officers and vehicles speeding to the scene and people running from bar. Rapid-fire gunshots could be heard as officers crouched down behind a police vehicle, weapons drawn. Three people were seen carrying someone, and later paramedics applied bandages to the man, who has blood on his back.

Cole Knapp, a freshman at Moorpark College, said he was inside the bar when the shooting began, but he thought at first that it was “just someone with an M-80, just kind of playing a prank.” Then he said he saw the gunman, wearing a black beanie and black hoodie and holding a handgun.

“I tried to get as many people to cover as I could,” Knapp said. “There was an exit right next to me, so I went through that. That exit leads to a patio where people smoke. People out there didn’t really know what was going on. There’s a fence right there so I said, ‘Everyone get over the fence as quickly as you can,’ and I followed them over.”

He said a highway patrol officer was nearby who just happened to be pulling someone over.

“I screamed to him, ‘There’s a shooter in there!’ He was kind of in disbelief, then saw that I was serious,” Knapp said. He said he had friends who hadn’t been accounted for.

Tayler Whitler, 19, said she was on the dance floor with her friends nearby when she saw the gunman shooting and heard screams to “Get down!”

“It was really, really, really shocking,” Whitler told KABC-TV as she stood with her father in the parking lot. “It looked like he knew what he was doing.”

Sarah Rose DeSon told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that she saw the shooter draw his gun. “I dropped to the floor,” she said. “A friend yelled ‘Everybody down!’ We were hiding behind tables trying to keep ourselves covered.”

Shootings of any kind are very rare in Thousand Oaks, a city of about 130,000 people about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Los Angeles, just across the county line.

Helus was a 29-year veteran of the force with a wife and son and planned to retire in the coming year, said the sheriff, who choked back tears as he talked about the sergeant who was also his longtime friend.

“Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff’s sergeant who was totally committed,” Dean said, “and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives.”

Video After The Jump

Protesters took to the streets on Friday, March 6, after a 19-year old black man was shot five times by police in Madison, Wisconsin.

Cops responded to a call that Tony Robinson had committed battery earlier. When an officer arrived at his apartment he said he heard a disturbance inside. The cop forced his way into the apartment and reportedly got into a struggle with Robinson. During the fight the unidentified officer was reportedly hit in the head. He then drew his weapon and fired.

"In the context of mutual combat in that sense, the officer did draw his revolver and subsequently shot the subject," Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said.

12351418454?profile=original

Hours after Anthony Robinson was fatally shot by a Madison police officer, his grandmother, Sharon Irwin (second from the right), and aunt, Lorien Carter (pictured with the megaphone), asked the crowd at Williamson Street to keep demonstrations peaceful.

Police said they did not know if Robinson was armed, but initial indications are that he was not.

The officer on the scene administered CPR immediately after the shooting. Robinson was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

State law mandates that an independent investigation be conducted. MPD froze the scene until the state Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation arrived, according to The Daily Cardinal.

"You're not protecting us, you're killing us!" Robinson's grandmother, Sharon Irwin, shouted at police as the protests continued into early Saturday, according to The New York Daily News.

Protesters chanted "Black Lives Matter" and "Justice!"

Robinson's aunt, Lorien Carter, said the family wasn't allowed to see Robinson's body in the hospital because it was considered "evidence."

"He wasn't referred to as 'his son' or 'your son,' just 'evidence,'" she said.

Video After The Jump

(CNN) -- At least seven people, including a gunman shot by a police officer, have been killed in an attack on worshippers at a Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on Sunday, police said.

The officer was wounded but "returned fire, and that shooter was put down," said Bradley Wentlandt, the police chief in nearby Greenfield, who briefed reporters. Investigators who picked through the building afterward found four bodies inside the temple and two other victims outside, plus the gunman, Wentlandt said.

12349407289?profile=original

Though early reports had suggested there may have been more than one attacker, he said officers had not identified any other gunmen.

The wounded officer, a 20-year veteran, was in surgery Sunday afternoon after being shot multiple times, but was expected to survive, Wentlandt said. He was sent to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, south of Milwaukee, after a 911 call about 10:25 a.m. (11:25 a.m. ET).

12349408066?profile=original

Carolyn Bellin, a spokeswoman for Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital, said one of three men brought there from the incident was in surgery early Sunday morning, while another was in the surgical intensive care unit. The third was being evaluated in the emergency room. All three were in critical condition.

The temple has a congregation of 250 to 400, according to its website.

12349407876?profile=original

"I just want to say this temple was built a number of years ago and there have never been any problems with this temple," Oak Creek Alderman Dan Jakubczyk said. "They've been a plus to this city and to my district."

Recently we covered a story about Haitian voodoo priests being lynched by angry mobs accusing them of spreading cholera in the earthquake ravaged country.

Another voodoo related story has just emerged, this time involving an American relief worker.

32-year old Paul Waggoner, the co-founder of Materials Management Relief Corps has been accused of turning a 15-month old dead baby boy into a zombie for the purpose of selling it’s organs.

12348737897?profile=originalPaul Waggoner being transported to a Haitian prison.

Waggoner is being held in prison pending further investigation after a judge ruled there was enough evidence to look into the charges further.

The accusation was made by the child’s father Frantz Philistin, who brought the sick child to a hospital in February. Philistin handed the child over to Waggoner, who then took the child to doctors. The child died, but wasn’t treated by Waggoner.

When the father came back the next day doctors say he saw the baby and confirmed his death. He refused to take the child with him, insisting he didn’t have the money for a burial, and the child was cremated by the hospital. But now Philistin is accusing Waggoner of performing voodoo on the child to keep him alive.

My son is not dead, when I tried to close his eyes they wouldn’t close. When I tried to close his mouth it wouldn’t close,” Philistin told  AOL news.

12348738668?profile=originalFrantz Philistin has accused Waggoner of using voodoo to turn his 15-month old baby into a zombie for the purpose of selling it's organs

Doctors on call at the time of the child’s death dispute Philistin’s claims.

I listened to the baby’s chest for at least two minutes,” Dr Kenneth Adams said. “And there were neither breath sounds nor heartbeat. Rigor mortis had set it, the baby’s lips and skin were bluish gray and there was corneal clouding of the eyes. I always take very seriously pronouncing the death of any patient.”

Waggoner’s friends are concerned or his safety.

Paul Sebring came to Haiti with Waggoner, he says the prison conditions are horrible.

We’ve literally given up everything in our lives to come help, and then this happens, we need help,” Sebring told MyFoxPhoenix. “The conditions he‘s in now I‘ve been to the prison. I wouldn’t even put an animal through that.

12348738491?profile=original
The U.S. State Department is monitoring the case closely according to spokesman P.J. Crowley.

What’s uncertain is how long Waggoner will remain jailed and if the U.S. can do anything to get him released.

Video After The Jump Matt Olivarez of Redford, Michigan made a very tough decision to have his 10-year old Rottweiler put to sleep, after his vet advised him it would be best. The dog, Mia suffers from spinal injuries, can barely walk and is in constant pain, so Olivarez agreed to have it euthanized. But miraculously, the dog woke up the very next day. "I watched her basically die in front of my eyes, at least I thought she was. And now I got to go through it again? I mean, come on, man," Olivarez said. Thinking the dog was dead, Olivarez brought her home to decide whether to bury her, or to have her cremated. Much to his surprise, when he walks in from work the next day, Mia is alive sitting by her food bowl. "When I came home from work, you know I was like, she was sitting right there, you know, in front of her bowl of food. All I know is that, when they injected her, they injected her twice. And, she went to sleep. And they said, 'That's it. She passed.' And they gave me a blanket, wrapped her up. I took her home. And I wanted to figure out what I wanted to do with her. And, the next morning, I came back, she was wide awake," Olivarez said. Now he's left with an even tougher decision. Whether or not he should take Mia back to the vet to be put to sleep again. "You know, what if I would have buried my dog alive? What if I had her cremated, you know? She would have gotten burned alive. You know, that's animal cruelty. You know, like, all type of stuff, like, I explained that to my kids. How am I going to explain to my kids, I gotta kill Mia twice? I gotta kill her again? My kids are eight and nine years old. I mean, she's a family dog," he said. The clinic where he originally took Mia has agreed to refund his money. I have to be real, if I brought my dog home after being put to sleep, I would bug out. The guy had to carry her from the clinic to his car, then from his car inside his garage. She obviously wasn't breathing. This is too much like the movie 'Pet Sematary.' twitter-5d.gif
