QUINCY, MASS. (WHDH) - A Quincy man is facing criminal charges after police say he held his girlfriend against her will in their apartment for the last week and tried to kill her when she managed to escape by jumping out of a second-story window on Wednesday.

Officers responding to a report of a woman screaming for help on Wednesday found the area quiet and spoke with neighbors who said a man had just grabbed a woman from behind, covered her mouth, and dragged her back into an apartment, according to police.

After forcing their way into the apartment, officers say they found the woman unresponsive on a bed who was “agonal breathing” and had “red marks on her throat.” She was rushed to Boston Medical Center by ambulance.

An investigation determined her boyfriend, Matthew McAuliffe, 32, had held her against her will for the last week and she jumped from a second-story window to escape.

“We want to publicly commend the neighbors for getting involved,” police wrote in a statement. “They did exactly what we would hope: They contacted 9-1-1 and observed from a safe location. They were able to provide us with information needed to quickly locate the victim. We truly believe their actions, coupled with the immediate actions of (the officers) may very well have saved this young woman’s life.”

McAuliffe was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing at his arraignment in Quincy District Court on charges including assault to murder, aggravated assault and battery, strangulation, assault and battery on an intimate partner, and kidnapping.

A veteran US Capitol Police officer has died by suicide, authorities and reports said Sunday, a further blow to a department already reeling from the death of a member during last week’s riot.

Officer Howard Liebengood, 51, died on Saturday while off-duty, the department announced in a statement.

“He was assigned to the Senate Division, and has been with the Department since April 2005,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.

“We ask that his family, and other USCP officers’ and their families’ privacy be respected during this profoundly difficult time.”

The department did not disclose the circumstances of Liebengood’s death, but outlets and reporters including Jake Sherman, of Punchbowl News, said that the lawman took his own life, citing sources.

It was not immediately clear what spurred the act.

Liebengood’s death came as the department was still mourning Officer Brian Sicknick, who was pepper-sprayed and fatally bludgeoned with a fire extinguisher when supporters of President Trump stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday in a futile attempt to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

It was not immediately clear if Liebengood, like Sicknick, was on-duty at the time of the deadly riot.

The department itself is under intense scrutiny for the ease with which the mob overwhelmed Capitol Police and forced their way into the seat of American democracy.

Chief Steven Sund has announced his resignation from the force, effective Jan. 16. #suicide #suicideawareness #howardliebengood #briansicknick #capitolpolice #uscapitol #riots #washingtondc #cops #police #proudboys #deadly #donaldtrump #presidenttrump #trumpsupporters #thugs #nancypelosi #mikepence #tedcruz #rudygiuliani #lies #insurrection #sedition

Washington (CNN) Even with coronavirus spiking and new restrictions taking effect, Congress remains stalled on fresh relief for Americans in need.

While there's support from both Republicans and Democrats for sending out another round of payments, it's unlikely Americans will get a second round of stimulus checks before the end of the year -- and lawmakers have been unable to come to any agreement on a broader economic aid package.

Congress returns to Washington this week focused on passing a broader spending bill by December 11 to avert a partial government shutdown, though it's possible that some relief programs could be added to such a broader spending bill.

If anything, those provisions may extend programs set to expire on December 31 -- including expanded unemployment benefits, an eviction moratorium and a pause on student loan payments.

Disagreements over new checks

There's been little talk from lawmakers of a second round of stimulus checks since the summer. The most recent stimulus package proposal put forth by Republicans, who currently control the Senate, didn't include money for direct payments.

President-elect Joe Biden supports a $3 trillion Democratic-backed bill that passed the House in May, which provided for a second round of checks. But that package has little chance of passing Congress unless Democrats gain control of the Senate by winning both runoff Senate races in Georgia set for January 5.

More than 160 million Americans received stimulus payments earlier in the year, after Congress approved a $2 trillion aid package in March. They helped keep many families out of poverty as millions of people lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

But for many, that $1,200 check has already been spent. Now, as coronavirus cases surge, a group of more than 120 economists are urging lawmakers to approve another round of checks, arguing that they are "one of the quickest, most equitable, and most effective ways to get families and the economy back on track."

Congress has already allowed some relief programs to expire, like the Paycheck Protection Program for small businesses and the $600 federal boost to weekly unemployment benefits.

But others end this month. If Congress adds any stimulus to the general spending bill, they may prioritize pushing back those deadlines.

COVID-19 is about to get tag-teamed -- a second vaccine is on the way, and Moderna says this one has an even higher success rate than the first.

On the heels of Pfizer's announcement it has a coronavirus vaccine more than 90% effective in preventing COVID infections, Moderna's apparently one-upping it ... claiming to have one that boasts a 94.5% success rate.

The pharmaceutical giant released its early data Monday, which Dr. Anthony Fauci calls "as good as it gets."

Fauci says vaccinations could begin as early as the second half of December for high-risk groups, and be available for the rest of the public starting in late April.

Moderna's vaccine trial included 30,000 study participants -- 15k of which were given the vaccine, and 15k were given a saline placebo.

Among the placebo subjects, 90 of them developed COVID-19 over several months, and 11 of those patients got a severe case.

Among those given the vaccine, only 5 got COVID and none were severely ill. Moderna says its vaccine did not have any serious side effects, but a small percentage of people experienced symptoms such as body aches and headaches.

The incredibly high efficacy -- for Moderna and Pfizer's vaccines -- is great news ... the stock market is soaring. However, think about this ... a reported 30 percent of Americans don't trust a vaccine, and won't take it. So, it's plausible some people will pick their social circles based on who does get vaccinated. Just a thought.

Moderna plans on applying for FDA authorization later this month after more it gathers more safety data.

A judge on Thursday dismissed a third-degree murder charge against Derek Chauvin, one of four former Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd.

Chauvin, who was released from custody this month on $1 million bond, will still face charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, Hennepin County Judge Peter A. Cahill ruled.

Video shows Chauvin pressing his knee onto Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes while he is handcuffed and yelling that he can’t breathe.

Cahill also upheld the charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter against the officers – Tou Thao, Thomas K. Lane and J. Alexander Kueng – who were present at the time of the video.

Two weeks after a Black man’s body was found hanging from a tree near the Victorville City Library, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Saturday that foul play was not suspected in his death.

The department also said that the investigation into the death of Malcolm Harsch, 38, is ongoing, according to a report in the Victor Valley News.

“There were no indications at the scene that suggested foul play; however, the cause and manner of death are still pending,” Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller told the news outlet.

The Victorville Fire Department discovered Harsch’s body May 31 after receiving a dispatch call around 7 a.m., officials said. When firefighters arrived at the library, they found Harsch hanging from a nearby tree.

In a statement sent to the Victor Valley News, Harsch’s family in Ohio said they find it hard to accept that his death was a suicide. They said that Harsch had recent conversations with his children about seeing them soon and that he did not seem to be depressed to anyone who knew him.

The family also said they were told that Harsch, at 6 foot 3, wasn’t dangling from the tree and that there was blood on his shirt. At the same time, there did not appear to be any evidence at the scene to suggest a struggle, they said. They also noted that his body sat at the San Bernardino County coroner’s office for 12 days before an autopsy was performed.

“The explanation of suicide does not seem plausible,” the family wrote. “There are many ways to die but considering the current racial tension, a Black man hanging himself from a tree definitely doesn’t sit well with us right now.

“We want justice, not comfortable excuses,” they wrote.

According to the family, a deputy called to confirm the death and said a USB cord was used in the hanging.

New rule (apparently): Where there's a park, there's an angry white woman -- aka "Karen" -- spewing hateful, racist words ... and this winner does her biz in a Southern California park. Meet Torrance "Karen," everyone.

Her tirade went down Wednesday at the Charles H. Wilson Park in Torrance, CA ... because she was pissed a young woman was using a set of stairs to exercise. Now, she claims "Karen" intentionally walked through her workout ... and, as you see in the vid, she said "Jesus" ... which set off "Karen.'

She jumped in headfirst, threatening violence ... "Next time you ever talk to me like that, you're gonna get your ass kicked by my family. They're gonna f**k you up!"

She continued to unload profanities, and then quickly got racial.

"Karen" screamed, "Get the f**k out of this world, get the f**k out of this state, go back to whatever f***ing Asian country you belong in. You little f***ing bitch! This is not your place. This is not your home. We do not want you here!"

The vile woman then tells her to post it on Facebook and threatens more violence, before finally -- and strangely -- laying into her for wearing black clothes in the California sun. Seriously? Pick your beef "Karen!"

The young woman working out told reporters she was in shock over the lady's attack and it's left her shaken and afraid about returning to the park.

Torrance PD is investigating the incident.

Update:

A new video -- which is somehow even more disturbing than the first -- has surfaced of SoCal Karen. The clip shows the woman confront an Asian man in a parking lot and launch a series of racist remarks at him. We're told this incident happened after the first one, but on the same day, and a police report for criminal threats was filed this time. Cops are still working to get in touch with the woman.

(CNN) Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is increasing charges against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to second-degree murder in George Floyd's killing and also charging the other three officers involved in the incident, according to a tweet from US Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

Ellison's official announcement is expected to come Wednesday afternoon, more than a week after Floyd was killed while in police custody in Minneapolis, sparking nationwide protests that call for the end to police violence against black citizens.

Derek Chauvin, who had his knee pressed into Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes, had previously been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Officers Thomas Lane and J.A. Keung, who helped restrain Floyd, and a fourth officer, Tou Thao, who stood near the others, were not initially charged.

Two autopsies on Floyd determined that he died by homicide. Minneapolis Police chief Medaria Arradondo fired the four officers and said they were "complicit" in Floyd's death, and Floyd's family and protesters nationwide have called for them to be arrested and convicted for the killing.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Fires burned and looters struck Thursday after violent protests over the death of a black man in police custody rocked Minneapolis for a second straight night, with damage stretching for miles across the city.

Amid the violence, a man was found fatally shot Wednesday night near a pawn shop. Asked to confirm reports that he had been shot by a store owner, police spokesman John Elder said that was “one of the theories.”

Protesters began gathering in the early afternoon Wednesday near the city’s 3rd Precinct station, in the southern part of the city where 46-year-old George Floyd died on Memorial Day after an officer knelt on his neck until he became unresponsive. Protesters skirmished with officers, who fired rubber bullets and tear gas in a repeat of Tuesday night’s confrontation.

On Thursday morning, smoke hung over Minneapolis and looters carried merchandise from a damaged Target store with no interference by police. Video of the store’s interior showed empty clothing racks and shelves and debris strewn about. Obscenities were spray painted on the exterior of the store.

Protests spread to other U.S. cities. In California, hundreds of people protesting Floyd’s death blocked a Los Angeles freeway and shattered windows of California Highway Patrol cruisers on Wednesday.

It was the second night of violent protest in Minneapolis since the death of Floyd, whom police were seeking to arrest outside a Minneapolis grocery store on a report of a counterfeit bill being passed. A bystander’s cellphone video showed an officer kneeling on Floyd ’s neck for almost eight minutes as he eventually became unresponsive.

Mayor Jacob Frey tweeted for calm early Thursday. “Please, Minneapolis, we cannot let tragedy beget more tragedy,” he said on Twitter. He also asked for the public’s help in keeping the peace.

The officer and three others were fired Tuesday, and on Wednesday, Frey called for him to be criminally charged.

Frey asked Gov. Tim Walz to activate the National Guard, a spokesman confirmed Thursday. The governor’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Walz tweeted for calm Wednesday night, calling the violence “an extremely dangerous situation” and urging people to leave the scene.

On Wednesday night, officers responding to a reported stabbing near the protests found a man lying on the sidewalk with what turned out to be a bullet wound, Elder said. The man was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Elder said a suspect was in custody but said the facts leading up to the shooting were “still being sorted out.”

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa fire captain Jerry Brown has been reportedly arrested and booked into the Osage County Jail in connection to a series of bank robberies.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed on Monday that a person associated with the Tulsa Fire Department was arrested for allegedly being involved with a series of bank robberies in Skiatook and Sperry.

Skiatook police officials told FOX23 that Tulsa Police Department detained him at a Tulsa fire facility and Skiatook Police Department came and took him into custody for March 12 bank robbery in Skiatook.

Skiatook police say they started investigating after they received several phone calls from people in Skiatook about business activities and behaviors he was engaged in, which caused them to get the FBI involved.

PIO Andy Little with the Tulsa Fire Department confirmed Brown is employed with the fire department and has been arrested. Brown has been a part of the department for 17 years and will be placed on administrative leave.

We do not know if there are any more charges.

He’s being investigated for the bank robbery in Sperry on May 7 as well. He has not been arrested for it as of now.

NBA star Donovan Mitchell has tested positive for COVID-19 -- AKA coronavirus -- just hours after his Utah Jazz teammate, Rudy Gobert, was diagnosed.

The 23-year-old All-Star has not publicly commented, but ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski says players seem to be pointing the finger at Gobert not taking proper precautions.

"Jazz players privately say that Rudy Gobert had been careless in the locker room touching other players and their belongings," Woj says ... "Now a Jazz teammate has tested positive."

Media members are upset with Gobert also after he jokingly rubbed his hands all over mics and recorders while talking with reporters earlier this week (before he was formally diagnosed).

Of course, due to Gobert's health status ... Wednesday night's Jazz vs. Thunder game was postponed just minutes before tipoff and both teams were quarantined while the players were in the locker room.

The NBA has already suspended the season -- and there are rumblings play could resume in August ... but for now, league execs are trying to figure things out.

The coronavirus outbreak is wreaking havoc in the sports world -- several major events have been canceled or postponed ... including La Liga soccer games, ATP tennis tournaments and more.

As we previously reported, Charles Barkley is calling for the NCAA to cancel the March Madness tournament ... but so far, it's still scheduled to move forward.

The Score -- UFC superstar Conor McGregor appears to be in hot water again.

The Irishman is being investigated over a second sexual assault allegation in less than a year, sources told Tariq Panja of The New York Times.

McGregor reportedly sexually assaulted a woman in a vehicle parked outside of a Dublin pub last week. Police haven't charged the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion, and he hasn't spoken to authorities about the alleged incident.

McGregor is also awaiting a decision regarding a separate case from last December. The 31-year-old was arrested in January, questioned by Irish law enforcement, and released pending further investigation. Formal charges don't necessarily follow an arrest in Ireland.

However, McGregor has reportedly been charged with assault after punching an older man at a Dublin bar in April. He faces a maximum prison term of six months, a fine of $1,646, or both.

McGregor (21-4) last competed in the UFC in October 2018 when Khabib Nurmagomedov submitted him in the main event of UFC 229.

Report via TMZ -- Another man has been arrested in connection with Mac Miller's fatal overdose.

36-year-old Lake Havasu City resident Ryan Reavis is in custody ... this after the FBI and DEA targeted him over Mac's death. The law enforcement agencies obtained a search warrant for Reavis' home, and what they found led to his arrest.

According to investigators, drugs were found -- including prescription-only pills and marijuana. Cops say they also confiscated firearms, including a 9mm pistol and two shotguns, a homemade firearm suppressor and an arsenal of ammo.

Perhaps most important ... police found a physician's prescription pad.

Reavis was arrested and booked on fraud, drug and gun charges on $50,000 bail.

You'll recall ... Mac's alleged dealer, Cameron James Pettit, was arrested a few weeks ago for allegedly supplying Mac with deadly counterfeit oxy pills ... which cops say led to his death.

In the charging docs, prosecutors said Pettit worked with two women, who police say also played a role in supplying Mac with drugs 2 days before he died.

Video After The Jump

NEW YORK (AP) — The “DC” initials that flashed on the Madison Square Garden marquee have a deeper meaning for Daniel Cormier.

Dual Champ.

Cormier draped himself in two title belts, history-making bling that cemented the 39-year-old as one of the greats in the mixed martial arts game.

“Two belts for each shoulder! I get to look at this again,” Cormier said. “It’s history and Daniel Cormier is one of the best of all-time.”

He backed up his boast with authority in New York.

Cormier choked out Derrick Lewis in the middle of the second round to retain his heavyweight championship in the main event of UFC 230, becoming the first fighter to defend titles in two weight classes.

Cormier, who also holds the light heavyweight crown, made quick work of an overmatched Lewis with a rear naked choke. He celebrated with his family in the cage as Lewis trudged out, still in his trunks unlike the last fight that made him a quick star.

Cormier (22-1, 1 no-contest) had a quick takedown in the first and turned in a dominant yet dull effort to easily take the round. He didn’t waste much time in the second and left MSG with a little slice of history.

He was still ready to rumble.

With trash talk worthy of WrestleMania hype, Cormier called out former UFC heavyweight champion and current WWE star Brock Lesnar for a match in 2019.

Cormier had an itch to add a third (yet faux) title.

“Bring that belt with you when you come to my house,” said Cormier, who has vowed to retire at age 40.

Cormier won the heavyweight crown when he flattened Stipe Miocic, a bout that ended with theatrics after he called Lesnar into the cage. Lesnar shoved Cormier in the chest while the fighters traded insults to hype a potential future bout.

UFC President Dana White has said he wanted a Lesnar-Cormier bout signed for next year, a showcase that would surely be the biggest ever for heavyweights. Lesnar is still with WWE and left the promotion’s controversial Crown Jewel event on Friday in Saudi Arabia as the Universal champion. His status remains as murky as ever — he still has to serve out the remainder of a USADA suspension — and was not spotted at MSG.

Cormier beat Anthony Johnson in 2015 to win the light heavyweight title and defended it against the likes of Alexander Gustafsson and Volkan Oezdemir.

Cormier has never lost to anyone except Jon Jones, the star-crossed former light heavyweight champion who beat him twice. The second bout last year was changed to a no-contest when Jones failed a doping test that kept him out of the sport for 15 months. Cormier will be stripped of his light heavyweight title and the 205-pound crown will go to the winner of the Jones-Gustafsson bout at UFC 232 on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.

Jones has ruled out a trilogy, and Cormier’s next challenger will surely give him a better fight than Lewis.

Lewis (21-6) served 3½ years in prison in his early 20s stemming from a parole violation when he was charged with aggravated assault shortly after high school. Lewis took up mixed martial arts shortly after his release and used his big right hand to ascend to a title shot. He had won nine of his last 10 fights and his self-deprecating humor — including a randy answer as to why he stripped off his shorts inside the cage after his last win — earned him a sponsorship deal with Popeyes Chicken.

“Look who just slid into our DMs before the weigh in,” the fried chicken joint tweeted, with a picture of Lewis chomping on a drumstick.

Much like attacking a bucket of chicken, Cormier tagged Lewis everywhere: leg, thigh, and then the neck for the decisive blow.

“A lot of people have to understand that I’ve been doing this for nine years and I fought at a championship level for eight of them,” Cormier said. “If you have a puncher’s chance it’s not good enough.”

The main event had history, if not the thrills of the earlier bouts.

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza connected on a flush right hand to the temple to knock out Chris Weidman in the third round in a battle of two fighters who both badly needed a victory.

Souza and Weidman were engaged in a brutal slugfest that kept both fighters on their feet for most of the first 2½ rounds. Weidman finally got caught and clung to Souza’s leg as he tried to find his bearings. Souza got a couple of punches in for good measure until referee Dan Miragliotta mercifully stopped the fight.

Souza rebounded from a loss to Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 224 and did it with a busted nose. Weidman stunned Souza with a right that smashed the Brazilian’s nose, making it spew blood for the remainder of the first round.

Israel Adesanya had a breakout performance with a dominant destruction of veteran Derek Brunson than ran his record to 15-0 and launched him as serious contender in the middleweight division.

Adesanya flipped off Brunson early in the first round and finished him not much later for the TKO win. Adesanya landed a knee to the face that stumbled Brunson and finished him off with a left that had the crowd on its feet. Adesanya, who has earned comparisions to a young Anderson Silva, danced in the middle of the octagon on a night where a new star was seemingly born.

His bio on his @stylebender Instagram account says he likes to “say the darndest things.” Adesanya had something to witty to say to the MSG crowd.

“They say this is a walk in the park? Nah, it’s a walk in the Garden,” Adesanya said.

The NYPD are looking into a possible connection between a shooting involving Tekashi69 and Casanova.

TMZ reports that Casanova, born Caswell Senior, was filming a music video on Thursday, April 19, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York, when someone fired ten shots, injuring two members of his entourage. Both men are expected to make a full recovery.

Police are investigating to find out if someone in 6ix9ine's crew is the culprit. This would be the second alleged shooting in three days involving the rival crews.

As we previously reported, there was a scuffle Saturday night at Barclays Center during the Adrien Broner vs. Jessie Vargas boxing match.

There was some pushing and shoving before someone from 69's crew pulled out a gun and fired a shot. Nobody was hit, but police did recover a .32 caliber shell casing at the scene.

The beef between Casanova and Tekashi, real name Daniel Hernandez, has been brewing for months. Both rappers are from Brooklyn and reported members of two separate Bloods gang sets.

On Tuesday, November 28, a Manhattan federal jury convicted James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond for the second time of hiring 2 hit men to murder G-Unit associate Lowell “Lodi Mack” Fletcher in 2009.

The former head of Czar Management had his previous conviction for the alleged crime overturned in 2016 by a federal appeals court.

Rosemond, 52, who once managed the careers of The Game, Akon, Salt-N-Peppa, Sean Kingston, Gucci Mane and Brandy was already facing 2 life sentences related to separate drug and gun convictions, so a not guilty verdict would not have freed him from prison.

He was convicted in 2012 for being the kingpin of a multi-million-dollar transnational cocaine-selling organization.

The New York Post reports that in this latest trial government witness, Brian “Slim” McCleod, who had done time with Fletcher, testified that he lured his friend to an isolated part of the Bronx with promises of money and drinks.

When they got there Derrick Grant and Rodney Johnson were waiting. Grant reportedly fired the fatal shot.

The hit was in retaliation for a 2007 altercation between Fletcher, Tony Yayo and Henchman's teenage son near Czar Entertainment's New York City office.

Charges against Yayo in the case were dismissed.

"As I told you from the beginning, Tony Yayo did not hit anyone and would never do anything to harm a child," his lawyer Scott Leemon said at the time.

Fletcher pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child and was sentenced to nine months in prison.

He was murdered 2 weeks after being released.
