Video And Pics After The Jump

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Streets appeared calm early Thursday in downtown Charlotte after a second night of violent protests over the deadly police shooting of a black man, although at least three major businesses were asking their employees to stay home for the day as the city remained on edge.

Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Duke Energy all told employees not to venture into North Carolina's largest city after Gov. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency Wednesday night and called in the National Guard after Charlotte's police chief said he needed the help. The North Carolina National Guard arrived at a Charlotte armory early Thursday and Guard vehicles left the armory about 8 a.m.

Federal help also is on the way, with the Justice Department sending to Charlotte a team of trained peacekeepers designed to help resolve community conflict. The department's Community Relations Service has been deployed to other cities roiled by tense flare-ups between police and residents.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jennifer Roberts told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday that city officials are talking about imposing a curfew.

Anger has continued to build over the shooting of 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott by a black police officer on Tuesday afternoon and the wildly different accounts about what happened from authorities and Scott's family and neighbors.

A peaceful prayer vigil turned into an angry march and then a night of violence after a protester was shot and critically wounded as people charged police in riot gear trying to protect an upscale hotel in Charlotte's typically vibrant downtown. Police did not shoot the man, city officials said.

460x.jpg

Video obtained and verified by The Associated Press, which was recorded right after the shooting, shows someone lying in a pool of blood as people scream and a voice yells for someone to call for help. People are then told to back up from the scene.

The unrest took many by surprise in Charlotte, the banking capital of the South with a population of 830,000 people, about 35 percent of them black. The city managed to pull through a racially charged shooting three years ago without the unrest that erupted in recent years in places such as Baltimore, Milwaukee and Ferguson, Missouri.

In 2013, Charlotte police charged one of their own, Randall Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter within days, after the white officer shot an unarmed black man who had been in a wreck and was looking for help. The jury deadlocked and the charge was dropped last summer. The city saw a few protests but no violence.

On Wednesday, hundreds of protesters who were shouting "black lives matter" and "hands up, don't shoot" left after police fired flash grenades and tear gas after the shooting. But several groups of a dozen or more protesters stayed behind, attacking people, including reporters, shattering windows to hotels, office buildings and restaurants and setting small fires. The NASCAR Hall of Fame was among the places damaged.

At one point, television news helicopters showed protesters on the loop highway around downtown, trying to stop cars for several minutes before police arrived.

"My heart bleeds for what our great city is going through," McCrory said on WBTV-TV. He was mayor of Charlotte for 14 years before becoming governor.

Authorities said three people and four police officers were injured. Videos and pictures on Twitter showed reporters and other people being attacked.

The violence happened amid questions about what happened when Scott was shot and killed in the parking lot of his condominium complex. Police did not release dashboard or body camera footage, but said Scott had a gun and refused several orders to drop his weapon. Scott's family and neighbors said he was holding a book.

"He got out of his car, he walked back to comply, and all his compliance did was get him murdered," said Taheshia Williams, whose balcony overlooks the shady parking spot where Scott was Tuesday afternoon. She said he often waited there for his son because a bicycle accident several years ago left him stuttering and susceptible to seizures if he stayed out in the hot sun too long.

Charlotte Police Chief Kerr Putney was angered by the stories on social media, especially a profanity-laced, hourlong video on Facebook, where a woman identifying herself as Scott's daughter screamed "My daddy is dead!" at officers at the shooting scene and repeating that he was only holding a book.

Putney was adamant that Scott posed a threat, even if he didn't point his weapon at officers, and said a gun was found next to the dead man. "I can tell you we did not find a book," the chief said.

Not long after the Facebook video was posted Tuesday night, the first night of destructive protests began near the shooting scene, about 15 miles northeast of downtown Charlotte. Dozens of demonstrators threw rocks at police and reporters, damaged squad cars, closed part of Interstate 85, and looted a stopped truck and set a fire. Authorities used tear gas to break up the protests.

The distrust of police continued after Wednesday's shooting of the protester. Many demonstrators did not believe city officials' assertion that officers did not shot the protester.

"We protesting. Why the hell would we target each other?" Dino Davis said. "They say it was the tear gas, and it looked like one the tear gas exploded. But I think it was a rubber bullet because some of those rubber bullets can penetrate."

460x.jpg

Police said the plainsclothes officer who shot Scott, identified as Brently Vinson, has been placed on leave, standard procedure in such cases. Three uniformed officers at the shooting scene had body cameras; Vinson did not, police said.

12352359658?profile=original

Officer Brently Vinson

Calls for police to release the video increased. North Carolina has a law that takes effect Oct. 1 requiring a judge to approve releasing police video, and Putney said he doesn't release video when a criminal investigation is ongoing.

But that video may be the only thing that calms Charlotte, said John Barnett, who runs a civil rights group called True Healing Under God, or THUG.

The Internal Revenue Service has informed Iggy Azalea that she's on the hook for $269,980.20 for taxes she failed to pay in 2015, according to TMZ.

Her accountants are apparently asleep at the wheel because Uncle Sam also hit the "Fancy" rapper with another tax lien back in April for $391,056.55, she owes for the year 2014.

As the investigation continues into the shooting that happened during T.I.'s concert at Irving Plaza in New York City on Wednesday, May 25, a clearer picture of what happened is starting to emerge.

One person was killed and three were injured, including Brooklyn recording artist Troy Ave, who was shot in the leg.

Police arrested the BSB Records CEO and charged him with attempted murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, after releasing video that shows him firing a gun backstage at the venue.

They alleged that he was the lone triggerman and accidentally shot himself.

PIX 11 reports that detectives are now working on a different theory.

According to their report, the 33-year old rapper was approached backstage by someone he had beef with and a fight ensued.

During the scrap Troy and his friend/bodyguard, Ronald McPhatter, were shot.

12352165481?profile=original

Ronald McPhatter a.k.a. BSB Banga died from a gunshot wound to the stomach

As Troy and his assailant tussled over the gun another shot went off. After that details get sketchy.

McPhatter, 30, died from a wound to the stomach. Christopher Vinson, 34, is recovering from a chest wound and 26-year old model, Maggie Carrie Heckstall, is recovering after surgery to repair damage from a gunshot to her knee.

12352165857?profile=original

Maggie Carrie Heckstall

Troy appeared in court on Monday, May 30, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. He's being held without bail until his trial.

12352154468?profile=original

His attorney Scott Leemon said his client was the victim in this case and that McPhatter died saving his life.

"He was shot. He didn't shoot himself, nor his bodyguard/longtime friend who died a hero. The video released by NYPD is only a small sampling. The portion released was selective. What happened before? After? Outside of the frame of that one camera view?" said Leemon.

Fat Trel (Arlington County Police Mugshot)

Less than two weeks after being arrested for allegedly trying to use counterfeit money at a Maryland casino, Maybach Music Group recording artist Fat Trel is back in police custody.

ABC7 reports that Trel, real name Martrel Reeves, was arrested by Arlington County Police on Thursday, April 7. He's been charged with DWI, narcotics distribution, speeding and driving on a revoked license.

12352077886?profile=original

This latest run-in with the law follows the 25-year old rapper's March 27th arrest, after he allegedly passed a pit boss at a Maryland casino nine fake $50 bills. They were easily spotted because the serial numbers on eight of the bills matched.

He reportedly said that the bills were dispensed from an ATM at a 7-11 store in his hometown of Washington, D.C.

Trel tweeted at the time that the charges were bogus.

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman escaped from maximum security Altiplano prison in July — the second time he has escaped such a facility.

Since that time he's evaded capture, despite the U.S. offering $5 million for information leading to his arrest and Mexican authorities searching desperately for him.

12351801486?profile=original

The drug kingpin has reached mythical status and is revered both in his home country of Mexico and by American rappers.

DJ Smallz recently caught up with Soulja Boy to talk to him about Guzman's latest escape.

"That shit crazy. That's some street, boss nigga shit...kingpin shit," Soulja said.

When asked if he thought "El Chapo" would be caught again Soulja didn't sound like he thought it was a possibility.

"He got caught before, so who knows. It's just crazy. That's El Chapo, you can't underestimate the godfather of selling dope."

Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian are officially back together. The couple got married on September 27, 2009, one month after they began dating.

On December 13, 2013, Khloe, 31, filed for divorce from the former NBA player following an extended separation.

TMZ reports that the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star instructed her attorney, Laura Wasser, to go before a judge on Wednesday, October 21, to stop the divorce proceedings. The request was granted.

12351800288?profile=original

"This is a very delicate and difficult time for both Lamar and Khloe, and the most sensible thing to do at such a time is not make any big moves and put everything on hold," a source tells PEOPLE. "So that’s what she is doing."

12351801075?profile=original

The news comes on the heels of Odom nearly losing his life after being found unconscious at the Love Ranch South brothel in Pahrump, Nevada, on Tuesday, October 13th, following a weekend of partying

He was in a coma at a Las Vegas hospital for several days before slowing starting to recover. Khloe stayed by his bedside the entire time. He was transferred earlier this week to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, to continue the recovery process.

Odom, 35, still faces months of rehabilitation.

During their separation Khloe was involved in high profile relationships with rapper French Montana and Houston Rockets star player, James Harden.

Video After The Jump

MALONE, N.Y. (AP) — The escaped murderer who was shot by a state trooper near the Canadian border is in "critical but stable" condition at an Albany hospital, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday.

Cuomo told CNN that David Sweat's condition initially was listed in stable condition but was downgraded to critical after being flown to Albany Medical Center on Sunday night.

APTOPIX Escaped Prisoners

Sweat is one of two prisoners who escaped from a maximum-security New York prison three weeks ago. The other escapee, Richard Matt, was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement on Friday.

12351620285?profile=original

Cuomo said Sweat had a bag containing maps, tools, bug repellent and Pop Tarts when he was shot twice by Sgt. Jay Cook on Sunday afternoon in a farm field less than two miles from the border in Constable, New York.

The daring escape from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora was "done with facilitators, it was done with cooperators," Cuomo said.

"This was 'Cool Hand Luke' meets 'Shawshank Redemption," he said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

460x.jpg

Some of the same state troopers who'd been hunting down the convicts since their escape found themselves scrambling to get the lone survivor to a hospital, hoping to make him well enough to share the tale of how the pair managed to escape and stay on the run for so long.

Sweat, 35, was shot and captured Sunday afternoon when a single state police sergeant spotted a suspicious man walking on a rural road in Constable, near the Canadian border.

His capture came two days after Matt was killed in Malone, just south of Constable, while holding a shotgun. Sweat was unarmed when he was shot twice by Sgt. Jay Cook as the fugitive ran for a tree line.

The men had been on the loose since June 6, when they cut their way out of the prison in Dannemora, about 30 miles from Malone, using power tools. Two prison workers have been charged with helping them.

Clinton correction officer Gene Palmer, charged with promoting prison contraband, tampering with physical evidence and official misconduct, is due in court Monday. His attorney has said he will plead not guilty.

12351620686?profile=original

Gene Palmer

Officials said Palmer gave the two prisoners frozen hamburger meat that a prison tailoring shop instructor had used to hide the tools she smuggled to Sweat and Matt. Palmer's attorney said he had no knowledge that the meat contained hacksaw blades, a bit and a screwdriver.

Prosecutors said the tailor shop worker, Joyce Mitchell, got close to the men while working with them and had agreed to be their getaway driver but backed out because she felt guilty for participating in the escape. Authorities also said Mitchell had discussed killing her husband as part of the plot.

12351621090?profile=original

Joyce Mitchell

Mitchell pleaded not guilty June 15 to charges including felony promoting prison contraband.

Sweat's capture ended an ordeal that sent 1,300 law enforcement officers into the thickly forested northern reaches of New York and forced residents to tolerate nerve-wracking armed checkpoints and property searches.

"The nightmare is finally over," Cuomo declared at a news conference.

Cook, a 21-year veteran, was alone and on routine patrol when he stumbled upon Sweat in Constable, about 30 miles northwest of the prison. He gave chase when Sweat fled and decided to fire fearing he would lose Sweat in the trees, state police said.

"I can only assume he was going for the border," Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said.

D'Amico said the men may have used black pepper to throw off their scent from the dogs that were tracking them; he said Sweat's DNA was recovered from pepper shakers found at one camp where the fugitives may have spent time.

460x.jpg

Cuomo said many questions remained unanswered in the case, including whether the inmates had other accomplices.

"We have already started a full investigation," he said. "But today ends with good news. These were dangerous, dangerous men."

Sweat had not been formally interviewed by investigators as of late Sunday, but any information he provides could be critical to the investigation, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said.

Sweat will be charged with escape, burglary and other charges, Wylie said. He and Matt are suspected of breaking into some of the region's many cabins during their time on the lam. Wylie said prosecutors would wait for Sweat to recover before charging him.

460x.jpg

Matt, 49, and Sweat used power tools to saw through a steel cell wall and several steel steam pipes, bashed a hole through a 2-foot-thick brick wall, squirmed through pipes and emerged from a manhole outside Clinton Correctional.

Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole in the killing of a sheriff's deputy in Broome County in 2002. Matt was serving 25 years to life for the killing and dismembering of his former boss.

Authorities said the men had filled their beds in their adjacent cells with clothes to make it appear they were sleeping when guards made overnight rounds. On a cut steam pipe, the prisoners left a taunting note containing a crude caricature of an Asian face and the words "Have a nice day."

Prosecutors said the inmates apparently used tools stored by prison contractors, taking care to return them to their toolboxes after each night's work.

Adrien Broner lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Shawn Porter as his idol, Floyd Mayweather Jr., sat ringside Saturday, June 20, in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

12351598653?profile=original

The fight was not pleasing to the eye. The two combatants stayed in the pocket the majority of the bout, but there was a lot of clenching and holding.

Referee Tony Weeks issued multiple warnings to Broner before finally taking a point from him in the 11th round of the non-title fight for fouling.

12351599060?profile=original

Broner's lone highlight came in the 12th round when he knocked Porter down with a left hook. Porter quickly got back to his feet and was able to finish to come away with the win.

In the end Porter simply outworked Broner putting an end to all of AB's pre-fight trash talk.

12351599271?profile=original

Porter won on scores of 114-112, 115-111, and 118-108. It was Broner's second loss in his last five fights, dropping his record to 30-2.

Porter's record now stands at 26-1-1.

Floyd spoke on the fight afterwards.

Video After The Jump

Boxing fans have been on the edge of their seats hoping to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight Manny Pacquiao. The wait is almost over.

During an interview with Showtime Sports, Mayweather said he is looking to get in the ring with Pacquiao on May 2, 2015.

12351283858?profile=original

"I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao. We tried to make the fight happen years ago; we had problems with random blood and urine testing," Mayweather said. "I just want to be on an even playing field. Now he's in a very, very tight situation. He's lost to [Juan Manuel] Marquez [in 2012], he's lost to [Timothy] Bradley [by controversial decision in 2012 but avenged it in April]. Pay-per-view numbers are extremely low. He's desperate. I wanted that fight a long time ago. I'm just waiting on them."

Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs) wants Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) to fight him on Showtime, where he is under contract for two more fights. Pac Man fights for HBO. There's no reason an agreement can't be made between the networks to co-promote the event.

The fight will most likely take place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. It could generate as much as $250 million and will be the highest pay-per-view boxing match in history.

12351284074?profile=original

Mayweather is not a fan of Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, but the money and pressure from Showtime's parent company CBS to put together a mega-fight almost assures the fight will happen.

"So let's make this fight happen. Manny Pacquiao, Bob Arum, you guys have been ducking us for years," Mayweather said. "We're tired of you guys fooling the public, fooling the critics. You guys didn't want to take random blood and urine testing, so that's why it didn't happen. Then I offered you $40 million, then you didn't want to make the fight happen. You lost twice, now you coming back begging for the same money. That's not gonna happen. Let's make the fight happen for the people and the fans. Mayweather versus Pacquiao, May 2nd, Cinco de Mayweather."
