WASHINGTON, June 20 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to 2 charges of willfully failing to pay income taxes & to enter into an agreement that could enable him to avoid a conviction on a gun-related charge.

The federal charges against Hunter Biden resulted from an investigation by David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in the Democratic president's home state of Delaware, who was appointed by Republican then-President Donald Trump.

Hunter Biden, 53, for years has been the focus of unrelenting attacks by Trump & his Republican allies, who have accused him of wrongdoing relating to Ukraine & China, among other matters. The president's son has worked as a lobbyist, lawyer, investment banker, artist & has publicly detailed his struggles with substance abuse.

According to court filings, Hunter Biden received taxable income in excess of $1.5 million in 2017 & 2018, but he did not pay income tax those years despite owing in excess of $100,000. The 2 counts are misdemeanors.

His attorney, Christopher Clark, said the government would file a firearm charge against his client that would be subject to a pretrial diversion agreement, an alternative to prosecution that is sometimes used to allow defendants to avoid prison time or a criminal conviction.

He described in a 2021 memoir dealing with substance abuse issues in his life, including crack cocaine use & alcoholism. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy Reserve in 2014 after testing positive for cocaine.

Donald Trump, who was recently indicted on federal criminal charges that he unlawfully kept national-security documents when he left office, criticized the deal.

"Wow! The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden a mere 'traffic ticket.' Our system is BROKEN!" he said on his social media platform.

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Former NBA star Shawn Kemp pleaded not guilty Thursday to an assault charge after prosecutors accused him of shooting at a man while attempting to retrieve a stolen cell phone.

Kemp was released without bail following the arraignment in Pierce County Superior Court in Washington state.

He was arrested after the shooting in a parking lot outside the Tacoma Mall on March 8 & released the following day pending further investigation. No one was injured & Kemp’s lawyers insisted he returned fire in self defense after tracking & trying to retrieve a cellphone that had been stolen from him earlier that day.

However, a probable cause statement by Tacoma police, filed along with 1st-degree assault charges last month, did not indicate Kemp was shot at. It said some of his statements were not corroborated by surveillance video & that just 13 minutes before he arrived at the mall, he sent a text message saying, “I’m about to shoot this (expletive).”

The document said Kemp told police that after being shot at he went back to his own vehicle, parked several spots away, to get his own gun. But the video showed that he was armed with the weapon when he approached the parked Toyota 4Runner where he had tracked his phone.

The statement said he fired 3 times into the Toyota & then threw his gun into some bushes. The driver of the 4Runner appeared to duck 1 of the shots & eventually drove off. Only about 5 minutes elapsed from the time Kemp arrived until the time the 4Runner left.

Kemp was a 6-time NBA all-star & played for the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland, Portland & Orlando.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department announced civil rights charges Thursday against 4 Louisville 4 over the 2020 drug raid that led to the death of Breonna Taylor.

Federal officials “share but cannot fully imagine the grief” felt by Taylor’s family, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in announcing the charges.

“Breonna Taylor should be alive today,” he said. The charges range from unlawful conspiracies, use of force & obstruction of justice.

The charges are against former officers Joshua Jaynes, Brett Hankison, Kelly Goodlett & Sgt. Kyle Meany.

Local activists & members of the Taylor family celebrated the charges & thanked federal officials.

“This is a day when Black women saw equal justice in America,” lawyer Benjamin Crump said.

Taylor was shot to death by Louisville officers who had knocked down her door while executing the search warrant. Taylor’s boyfriend fired a shot that hit 1 of the officers as they came through the door & they returned fire, striking Taylor multiple times.

Hankison is facing 2 civil rights charges alleging he used excessive force when he retreated from Taylor’s door, turned a corner 2 fired 10 shots into the side of her two-bedroom apartment. Bullets flew into a neighbor’s apartment, nearly striking 1 man.

He was acquitted by a jury of state charges of wanton endangerment earlier this year.

Jaynes had applied for the warrant to search Taylor’s house. He was fired in January 2021 by former Louisville Police interim chief Yvette Gentry for violating department standards in the preparation of a search warrant execution & for being “untruthful” in the Taylor warrant.

Jaynes & Goodlett allegedly conspired to falsify an investigative document that was written after Taylor’s death. Federal investigators also allege Meany, who testified at Hankison’s trial earlier this year, lied to the FBI during its investigation.

WASHINGTON (AP) — As the House prepares for impeachment, President Donald Trump faces a single charge — “incitement of insurrection” — over the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol, according to a draft of the articles obtained by The Associated Press.

Lawmakers are set to introduce the legislation Monday, with voting mid-week. Pelosi’s leadership team also will seek a quick vote on a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence & Cabinet officials to invoke the 25th Amendment.

The four-page impeachment bill draws from Trump’s own false statements about his election defeat to Democrat Joe Biden; his pressure on state officials in Georgia to “find” him more votes; and his White House rally ahead of the Capitol siege, in which he encouraged thousands of supporters to “fight like hell” before they stormed the building on Wednesday.

A violent & largely white mob of Trump supporters overpowered police, broke through security lines & windows & rampaged through the Capitol, forcing lawmakers to scatter as they were finalizing Biden’s victory over Trump in the Electoral College.

“President Trump gravely endangered the security of the United States and its institutions of Government,” the legislation said.

The bill from Reps. David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Ted Lieu of California, Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Jerrold Nadler of New York, said Trump threatened “the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power” and “betrayed” trust.

“He will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office,” they wrote.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the House will proceed with legislation to impeach Trump as she pushes the vice president & the Cabinet to invoke constitutional authority to force him out, warning that Trump is a threat to democracy after the deadly assault on the Capitol.

A Republican senator, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, joined Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska over the weekend in calling for Trump to “resign and go away as soon as possible.” #donaldtrump #presidenttrump #trumpimpeachment #mikepence #nancypelosi #joebiden #kamalaharris #presidenttrump #incitementofinsurrection #insurrection #sedition #imminentdanger #betrayal #riots #capitolriots #uscapitol #resign #impeachment #lies #proudboys #tedcruz

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was arrested Friday in Las Vegas and charged with felony theft related to a domestic violence complaint filed by a former girlfriend. Mayweather, 33, was booked Friday on a grand larceny charge and was held on $3,000 bail, Las Vegas police Officer Bill Cassell told the Associated Press. Richard Wright, Mayweather's attorney, said the boxer was accused of taking an iPhone from Josie Harris, the mother of three of his children. "He did not commit any grand larceny," Wright told the AP. On Thursday, Harris made a police complaint and sought a Family Court protection order and alleged that Mayweather punched her in the head and twisted her arm. Former Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam artist Tru Life turned himself in to authorities last night (June 23) to face a charge of 1st degree murder, according to reports. The charge is possibly tied to a brutal stabbing incident last week that left one man seriously injured, and an 18-year old teen dead. As reported by AllHipHop.com, police were initially investigating Tru Life’s brother for a retaliation attack in the non-fatal shooting of Michael Slater. The individual, whom police suspect is a drug dealer, was shot in the stomach outside of club Pacha. Several hours after the crime, police claim five gang members ambushed 30 year old Jason Black and the teen at a Manhattan apartment complex. Both men were stabbed repeatedly in the chest and face. Black survived the assault, while the unidentified teen succumbed to his wounds. At the time, police theorized that the back and forth violence was the result of a feud between Jason Black and Tru Life’s brother. 1st degree murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison under New York law. If an official or witness is not the victim, the distinction can also be decreed for murders involving multiple parties or tortuous killings. Tru Life’s last music effort, “Wet ‘em Up,” was heard as a selection on the soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto IV. At press time, Tru Life could not be reached for comment. Source : ALLHIPHOP
