Video After The Jump Carmelo Anthony's wish list starts with the New York Knicks, but that's not the only trade destination he's targeting. Sources briefed on the state of Anthony's ongoing push to be dealt by the Denver Nuggets told ESPN.com on Tuesday that the Chicago Bulls are a firm 1A on his list. This is partly attributed to the fact that the Bulls are much closer to assembling the sort of package Denver would want in return for its franchise player than the Knicks. Over the last 72 hours, sources said, Anthony's representatives -- headed by agent Leon Rose -- have been ramping up the pressure on the Nuggets to complete a deal with the Knicks or the Bulls before training camps open leaguewide next week. Sources say that Denver officials, however, are not inclined to rush into anything. ESPN.com reported Sunday night that the Nuggets, in recent days, have been telling interested teams for the first time that they are willing to field offers for Anthony after resisting such inquiries for weeks. But even as the Nuggets have opted to see what sort of haul can be had for their high-scoring forward, there remains strong sentiment within the organization to slow the process down in hopes of mounting one last campaign to win back Anthony's support. The Nuggets, sources said, are clinging to the hope that Anthony might reconsider his trade-me stance once he starts hearing some Denver-friendly voices upon reporting to camp after weeks of isolation from the organization. Anthony will be greeted by the likes of head coach George Karl and trusted teammate Chauncey Billups trying to convince the 26-year-old that his current team is not far away from a return to contention in the Western Conference and that the foundation of the group that reached the West finals in 2009 should not be scrapped. Yet sources say that the message from Anthony's camp to the Nuggets has stayed consistent: New York and Chicago are the preferred landing spots, with New Jersey and Houston also still in the conversation. The Nets remain a viable option because of their planned move to Brooklyn and because the Nets have what several rival executives believe to be the deepest cache of assets to satisfy Denver's trade demands in its worst-case scenario. Though the Rockets are the fourth known team in the Anthony sweepstakes, multiple sources close to the situation insisted Friday that Houston is not making guard Kevin Martin part of the discussions. The Nuggets, sources maintain, would expect a combination of expiring contracts, future first-round draft picks and at least one marketable young talent if they ultimately concede that Anthony must be traded between now and the February trading deadline. The Nuggets have offered Anthony, who can become a free agent next July, a three-year extension worth $65 million. ESPN.com reported Monday that the Nets are widely regarded in NBA front-office circles as the frontrunner for Anthony. New Jersey is reportedly willing to package No. 3 overall pick Derrick Favors with the expiring contracts of Troy Murphy and Kris Humphries and at least one future first-rounder. It's believed that the Nets, though, would insist on Anthony agreeing to a contract extension as part of the trade -- as Kevin Garnett did when Minnesota sent him to Boston in the summer of 2007 -- before they agree to surrender assets such as Favors and draft picks. The Bulls could theoretically trump any New Jersey offer if they were willing to include center Joakim Noah as part of a deal for Anthony. Sources with knowledge of Chicago's thinking, however, have maintained for days that the Bulls are strongly against the inclusion of Noah, revealing instead that Chicago has offered a package featuring Luol Deng, Taj Gibson and one future first-rounder. Playing alongside former Team USA teammate Amare Stoudemire in New York is thought to hold the greatest appeal to Anthony, something Stoudemire openly discussed earlier in the summer. The Knicks, though, simply lack the draft picks to sweeten a package that sources say would be centered around Eddy Curry's expiring contract and either Danilo Gallinari or Anthony Randolph -- but not both of those young players. The Knicks, Bulls and Nets all stand to benefit from Denver's determination to send Anthony out of the Western Conference if it decides there is no alternative apart from trading him, but sources close to the process note that a third team would almost certainly have to be recruited to help facilitate a deal. Reports have persisted for weeks that Anthony, wielding the hammer of his potential free agency in the wake of the defections of LeBron James and Chris Bosh to Miami, wants out. ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reported Aug. 16 that it was "a matter of when, not if, Anthony and the Nuggets will go their separate ways." But Anthony has not made any such declarations publicly, announcing Tuesday night via his Twitter feed: "Everyone has [their] own opinion. It's funny. It cracks me up." Yet Anthony did add in a follow-up tweet: "When I know something ... you guys will know something."

Two men and a woman broke into a locker at a Manhattan gym in February and stole credit cards, the first in a series of similar thefts. Three months later, in May, a young man tried to rob a Chase bank in the Bronx armed with only a note, which he slipped to a teller. She read it and stepped away, and he fled empty-handed. Weeks later, in June, a gunman robbed a Family Dollar store in Queens. Gym-locker heists, bank robberies, daylight holdups — these New York City crimes have only one thing in common, and it is not the culprits. It is the Yankees caps they wore. A curious phenomenon has emerged at the intersection of fashion, sports and crime: dozens of men and women who have robbed, beaten, stabbed and shot at their fellow New Yorkers have done so while wearing Yankees caps or clothing. One of the three suspects in the gym break-ins wore a blue Yankees cap. A security camera photographed the man who tried to rob the Bronx bank, and though his face was largely obscured, his Yankees hat was clearly visible. The Queens robbery suspect was last seen with a Yankees cap on his head. Gangsta rap link? In some ways, it is not surprising that Yankees attire is worn by both those who abide by the law and those who break it. The Yankees are one of the most famous franchises in sports, and their merchandise is widely available and hugely popular. But Yankees caps and clothing have dominated the crime blotter for so long, in so many parts of the city and in so many types of offenses, that it defies an easy explanation. Criminologists, sports marketing analysts, consumer psychologists and Yankees fans have developed their own theories, with some attributing the trend to the popularity of the caps among gangsta rappers and others wondering whether criminals are identifying with the team’s aura of money, power and success. Since 2000, more than 100 people who have been suspects or persons of interest in connection with serious crimes in New York City wore Yankees apparel at the time of the crimes or at the time of their arrest or arraignment. The tally is based on a review of New York Police Department news releases, surveillance video and images of robberies and other crimes, as well as police sketches and newspaper articles that described suspects’ clothing. No other sports team comes close. The Mets, forever in the shadow of their Bronx rivals, are perhaps grateful to be losing this one: only about a dozen people in the same review were found to be wearing Mets gear. “It’s a shame,” said Chuck Frantz, 57, the president of the 430-member Lehigh Valley Yankee Fan Club in Pennsylvania. “It makes us Yankees fans look like criminals, because of a few unfortunate people who probably don’t know the first thing about the Yankees.” The Yankees organization declined to comment for this article. An NYPD cop whose wife called 911 for help against a gang of thugs says he was brutally beaten by baton-wielding fellow officers who stormed his Queens home. Larry Jackson suffered a broken right hand and multiple bruises from kicks and billy-club blows he said he got from the men in blue called to his home when a gunman menaced guests at his daughter's birthday party. "To get my butt beat like that was unnecessary," said the six-year veteran assigned to the 110th Precinct. "We called the police, and this is what happened to me." "I'm shocked, angry and disappointed," said the 6-foot-3, 300-pound Jackson. Prosecutors and the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau are probing his claims.

His hand in a cast, he met with the Daily News on Wednesday and lifted his shirt to show the scars from Sunday's early morning confrontation. Jackson, who is black, said the excessive force by the cops, who were white, might have been racially motivated. "They didn't treat me like a house-owner calling for help," he said. "Everyone who lives in the 113th Precinct is not a perp." Investigators from IAB took a DNA sample from Jackson on Wednesday and told his lawyer, Eric Sanders, it was for testing against the cops' batons, which have been confiscated. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Jackson "was injured as a result of a dispute at the party." A spokeswoman did not return a call for further comment. Jackson's wife, Charlene, made a 911 call around 1:15 a.m. Sunday as her unarmed husband faced down thugs armed with a gun and bats who showed up as partygoers started leaving his home in Rochdale. "I told the 911 operator it's my daughter's 21st birthday and my husband is a police officer and there's a young man with a gun," she said. "Who do we call now?" said Charlene Jackson, a city bus driver. "It's very hurtful to know you can't trust the police officers in your neighborhood. I feel like the 113th Precinct is our enemy." Larry Jackson, wearing an apron with the slogan, "I'm the chef and I'm awesome," said he did not identify himself to the street thugs as a cop - but was able to convince them to leave. They were slinking off when the first patrol car from the 113th Precinct roared up and a sergeant got out. Charlene Jackson said she tried to tell the sergeant what happened when her niece yelled from the house that there was a fight inside. The sergeant's driver ran inside and struck a friend of the family with his baton, the Jacksons said. The sergeant then pushed Larry Jackson with his baton, they said, and when Jackson grabbed the sergeant, another cop began choking him from behind. Jackson was knocked down and fell on his 82-year-old mother-in-law who briefly lost consciousness, he said. "I'm covering my face and getting hit everywhere," he said. "Then somebody pepper sprayed me." The couple said cops hit at least six family members and friends with batons. Their stepson, a cousin and a nephew were charged with disorderly conduct. Larry Jackson's gun and badge were taken and he was placed on modified duty. "What's most disturbing is there were supervisors on the scene who did nothing," said lawyer Sanders.

While the police have seemingly given up on solving the murder of rapper/actor/poet, Tupac Shakur, fans and certain members of the media continue to look for clues. Tupac died September 13, 1996 in Las Vegas at the age of 25 from gunshot wounds sustained six days earlier. That is pretty much the only thing everyone can agree on. A new movie coming out about the man who has had more albums released since his death (8), than when he was alive (6) will focus on his last day of life, with flashbacks to the final four years leading up to it. Trying to shed light on why he was killed. Stephen J. Rivele is one of two screenwriters hired to write the film. He spoke to Vulture about the direction the project would be taking. "This is the story of an artist whose character is at odds with his medium. He was a really sensitive, very romantic, talented young poet who also could sing, dance, and act. But the realities [of the hip-hop record business] were that he had to create this persona of the gangster," Rivele says. "He was obviously very angry, and had been subjected to a great deal of violence at home, in the streets and in prison. But he was just beginning to shed that anger and look for a purer voice...He was in the process of changing himself, and entering a new phase of his life — essentially a Romantic vision — and had set up a new label, and a new production company to create it. He saw the contradiction between the musical persona of 'Thug Life,' and his essential nature as a gentle, sensitive person. And that was partly responsible for his murder: He was not a gangster, but the people around him were. They saw he was going to leave, that they were going to lose him, and so I think they decided to kill him." The movie is expected to begin production in November, and will be directed by Antoine Fuqua, who also directed 'Training Day.' twitter-5d.gif

Nicki Minaj has been the subject of a lot of rumors in her short career. Has she had plastic surgery? Did she date Lil Wayne? Is she really bi-sexual? Is Diddy her manager and are the two of them involved romantically? While she didn't clear up all speculation, the Young Money femcee did set the record straight on a couple of those topics. In a recent interview with CNN, Nicki was asked about those Diddy rumors. "You know how you look at your older brother? That's how I look at Diddy. When people say that, it makes me gag. He's my friend, and he's sweet and he's a great guy, but I could never see him that way," she said. The article states that for the record, Diddy is not her manager. Nicki also had a something to say about people that constantly put down her abilities as a rapper. "The people that are inclined to hate are also inclined to be losers. A loser could never congratulate a winner - it's not in them" she says. twitter-5d.gif

A federal grand jury indicted Roger Clemens on Thursday on charges of making false statements to Congress about his use of performance-enhancing drugs. An indictment was returned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Deborah A. Robinson of the District at a brief hearing shortly after 1:30 p.m. The indictment charges Clemens with one count of obstruction of Congress, three counts of making false statements and two counts of perjury in connection with his February 2008 testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. If convicted, he faces 15 to 21 months in prison. "Our government cannot function if witnesses are not held accountable for false statements made before Congress," said U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Mahen Jr. in a statement. "Today the message is clear: If a witness makes a choice to ignore his or her obligation to testify honestly, there will be consequences." In February 2008, Clemens, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner who pitched for the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees and Astros, and Brian McNamee, his former trainer, contradicted one another in testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform about whether Clemens had used banned substances. The hearing came after McNamee had linked Clemens to banned substances in George Mitchell's report on baseball players' use of performance-enhancing drugs. Clemens alleged that McNamee was lying; McNamee reached a deal with federal authorities to avoid prosecution for steroid distribution. The Post reported in February 2009 that McNamee, in testimony at the hearing, said he injected Clemens nearly 40 times with steroids and human growth hormone from 1998 to 2001. McNamee's attorneys have said that their client gave federal investigators syringes, gauze pads and other items that he claimed he used to inject Clemens. He stored the items in a FedEx box in his basement. Clemens and his defense team have long challenged McNamee's credibility, saying the former trainer has lied about the pitcher's alleged drug use. They also have said that McNamee may have cooked up the evidence. On Aug. 12, a federal appeals court in Houston refused to reinstate a defamation lawsuit Clemens filed against McNamee. In a 2 to 1 ruling, a panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a Houston federal district judge's 2009 dismissal of most of Clemens's claims against McNamee. In an e-mail, Rusty Hardin, Clemens's lawyer, said "we have heard nothing from the government." Source: Washington Post twitter-2a.png
