LOS ANGELES (AP) — A retired FBI agent from Northern California was arrested Friday for allegedly taking more than $200,000 in bribes to pass law enforcement information to a lawyer with ties to organized crime, prosecutors announced.

Babak Broumand, 53, of Lafayette in the San Francisco Bay Area was arrested on a charge of conspiracy to commit bribery of a public official that was filed in Los Angeles federal court, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a statement.

Broumand could face up to five years in prison if convicted. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

Broumand spent 20 years as an FBI special agent before retiring last year. Prosecutors said that from 2015 to 2017, while working on national security matters at the San Francisco field office, he received gifts and cash averaging $10,000 a month.

The bribes came from a lawyer with links to Armenian organized crime, prosecutors alleged.

In return, Broumand “would perform official acts and omit to do acts,” providing protection and information to help the lawyer “evade detection by law enforcement,” according to an affidavit in support of the criminal complaint.

Among other things, Broumand revealed an FBI investigation into a client of the lawyer who last month was convicted in Utah in connection with a $1 billion fraud scheme, according to prosecutors.

Broumand used some of the bribe money for a down payment on a $1.3 million vacation home near Lake Tahoe, authorities said.

Broumand also accepted gifts including an expensive motorcycle, hotel stays and escort services, according to prosecutors.

The allegations are disturbing, but “we found no evidence to suggest this went beyond an isolated incident,” Paul Delacourt, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said in a statement.

Broumand currently works as a staff investigator at the University of California, Berkeley, handling whistleblower allegations of “improper governmental activities” and investigating sex harassment and sexual violence allegations, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Video After The Jump

A high school football player that was set to continue his career at Louisville was shot and killed late Saturday night in Orlando, according to multiple reports.

Dexter Rentz, a wide receiver at Ocoee High School, was one of four people shot, but the 18-year-old was the only one to die.

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dexter Rentz,” Louisville coach Scott Satterfield said in a statement. “He was a great young man who had a contagious personality, and was able to light up a room with his smile. He was a great kid to be around and he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Rentz family during this extremely difficult time.”

Rentz was a three-star recruit, according to Rivals, and signed with Louisville in December. The team captain, who set a state record with five interceptions in one game and was also a track star, was set to enroll in June along with high school teammate Lovie Jenkins. Jenkins was among those to post a tribute to Rentz early Sunday morning.

Josh Minkins, another Louisville signee who was set to room with Rentz, also remembered him in a tweet.

“I’m over here hurt typing this, all the conversations we had and the time when you came to The Ville and I first met you I knew you was destined for big things,” Minkins wrote. “It’s crazy we was about to be roommates and all, I hate they took you from us dawg. I’ll make sure you name lives on.”

Chipotle Mexican Grill has agreed to a record $25 million fine to resolve criminal charges over tainted food that sickened more than 1,100 people in the U.S., federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

The Newport Beach, California company faced charges in Los Angeles federal court for outbreaks that occurred from 2015 to 2018. As part of a three-year deferred prosecution agreement, Chipotle has agreed to institute a more rigorous program to keep food safer.

“This settlement represents an acknowledgment of how seriously Chipotle takes food safety every day and is an opportunity to definitively turn the page on past events and focus on serving our customers real food made with real ingredients that they can enjoy with confidence,” Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol said in an emailed statement.

Kerry Bridges, Chipotle’s vice president of food safety, said the company has improved food handling practices to lower the risk of foodborne illnesses over the last four years.

“These measures include reducing the number of employees who come into contact with ingredients, safeguards to minimize the risk that an ingredient is undercooked, and sophisticated microbiological testing of raw ingredients to help ensure quality and safety before they are shipped to restaurants,” Bridges said.

The fine is the largest ever in a food safety case, federal prosecutors said.

“Chipotle failed to ensure that its employees both understood and complied with its food safety protocols,” U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna for the Central District of California said in a statement. “Today’s steep penalty, coupled with the tens of millions of dollars Chipotle already has spent to upgrade its food safety program since 2015, should result in greater protections for Chipotle customers and remind others in the industry to review and improve their own health and safety practices.”

The charges stem in part to outbreaks of norovirus, which can easily be transmitted by food workers. Norovirus can cause diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain.

Chipotle had been implicated in at least five foodborne illness outbreaks between 2015 and 2018 in restaurants in the Los Angeles area, Boston, Virginia and Ohio when store employees failed to follow safety protocols, prosecutors said.

Mike Tyson is preparing for a possible return to the ring.

The 53-year-old former undisputed heavyweight champion revealed during an Instagram Live session with rapper T.I. that he has started training again in preparation for some charitable exhibition bouts.

"I've been hitting the mitts for the last week," Tyson said. "That's been tough, my body is really jacked up and really sore from hitting the mitts. I've been working out, I've been trying to get in the ring. I think I'm going to box some exhibitions and get in shape. I want to go to the gym and get in shape to be able to box three or four-round exhibitions for some charities and stuff. Some charity exhibitions, make some money, help some homeless and drug-affected (expletive)s like me."

Tyson went on to detail his workout routine.

"I do about two hours on cardio, I do the bike and I do the treadmill for an hour. Then I do some light weights - 300, 250 reps," he said. "Then I start my day with the boxing thing. Then I go in there and hit the mitts for like 30 minutes, 25 minutes. Gotta get in better condition."

Tyson retired from boxing in 2005 with a career record of 50 wins - including 44 knockouts - and six losses.

North Korea's Supreme Leader/dictator Kim Jong-un has reportedly died, or is on his death bed with no hope for recuperation -- according to media outlets in China and Japan.

Amid reports China has sent a medical team to their communist neighbors this week to check in/advise on Kim, a Hong Kong-backed news channel's vice director -- who's apparently the niece of a Chinese foreign minister -- blasted out the news herself ... he's dead. TMZ has not confirmed that.

The woman put the report on a social media app called Weibo for her nearly 15 million followers to read, citing a "very solid source" about the claim Kim had, in fact, perished. A Japanese magazine reports he's in a "vegetative state" after a heart surgery gone wrong.

The outlet reports -- citing a Chinese medical expert privy to the situation -- that Kim had clutched his chest in early April and fell down while visiting the countryside there. He needed a stent procedure done, but apparently ... it either wasn't done rapidly enough, or it was botched completely by the surgeon -- with some reports saying he had shaky hands.

There's a lot of rumors swirling about the guy's condition -- and the fact is ... he hasn't made any major public appearances looking to be okay in several weeks now. About a week or so ago, CNN reported Kim was in "grave danger" after a medical procedure.

President Trump has downplayed the reports and has refused to elaborate -- but it looks like KJU's sister, Kim Yo-jong, might be getting set up to possibly replace him as Supreme Leader ... reports say she was recently re-promoted to a prominent position of power there.

Here's another point ... Saturday marks a major military anniversary in North Korea, where they celebrate the founding of the Korean People's Army in 1932 -- something they hype annually with a parade, and one in which Kim might normally make an appearance.

International reporters on the ground say if Kim was doing alright and not on death's doorstep, he and his team would figure out a way for him to show up to squash the rumors.

If he doesn't, it's probably not a good sign ... almost all but confirming something is wrong.

Video After The Jump

WASHINGTON (AP) — What President Donald Trump says and does often flies in the face of mainstream science. Coronavirus and the idea of injecting disinfectants is only the latest episode.

On Thursday, Trump raised the idea of injections of disinfectant to fight the coronavirus, which health officials warned would be dangerous. The president later claimed he was being sarcastic, although the transcript of his remarks suggests otherwise. Trump also suggested ultraviolet light, even internal light, could be a possible preventative measure, contrary to scientific advice.

On Friday, as the recorded U.S. death toll passed the 50,000 mark, the Food and Drug Administration issued an alert about the dangers of using a malaria drug that Trump has repeatedly promoted for coronavirus patients.

Asked what kind of grade he’d give Trump on science, M. Granger Morgan, a Carnegie Mellon University engineering and policy professor who has advised Democratic and Republican administrations, answered with a quick “F.”

“When he starts to air things like that (injection), it’s definitely a danger to the public because some people might actually do that,” said Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Chu, who was energy secretary in the Obama administration. “This isn’t science. This is something else.”

CHICAGO - A woman allegedly shot a man in his jaw over the weekend after he walked in on her with another man and she threatened to kill him if he left, police say.

Tamara Chapman, 26, faces a count of attempted first-degree murder in connection to the early Saturday shooting in the Austin neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

The evening began when Chapman and the man returned to her home after shopping for groceries, police said.

The man, 27, took her car home to grab a blender, but when he returned he found another man in the apartment, police said. Angered, he drove home again in Chapman’s car.

Chapman demanded he return her car, which he did, but she refused to drive him home or to hire a Lyft, police said. He left the rear of the home, where she confronted him and they argued.

The man told police she then took out a gun and said, “You’re not going to leave me or I’ll f——— kill you,” police said. She then allegedly shot him in the lower jaw, police said.

He ran to an alley near the 1100 block of South Mason Avenue, where paramedics took him to Stroger Hospital, police said. He was listed in good condition.

Chapman was arrested at the scene and later released from jail after paying a $15,000 bail, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

She is due in domestic violence court on April 24.
