PASADENA, Calif. — A San Diego man who was fatally shot during a gun battle last month with police in California was a former U.S. Marine and ex-police officer, authorities said Wednesday.
Dramatic video released Tuesday shows 47-year-old Lloyd Nelson Jr, firing his gun May 8 at officers after his car crashed head-on into a police vehicle during a pursuit in Pasadena.
He fired through his windshield and continued to shoot as he exited the vehicle. One officer was shot in the leg by friendly fire, police said.
Nelson was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1996, according to Pasadena police Lt. William Grisafe. Nelson previously worked for the Los Angeles County Office of Public Safety until it was absorbed into the sheriff’s department in 2010.
Grisafe said Nelson may also have served in the Army and Air Force reserves. He did not have a previous criminal record, the lieutenant said.
The incident began when a Pasadena officer saw Nelson make an illegal turn, park in the middle of the street and get out of the car, authorities said.
The officer tried to speak to Nelson but he got back into his car and drove away. Officers pursued Nelson in vehicles and with a helicopter before a supervisor called off the ground chase and let the helicopter take over. Nelson drove slowly but did not stop for red lights and stop signs, the video shows.
Police in patrol vehicles began chasing him again and forced a crash using an intervention maneuver designed to stop a car. The video shows Nelson open fire while still seated after his car struck a police vehicle.
Nelson got out of the car and continued shooting as officers returned fire.
Nelson was struck multiple times and died at the scene, officials said. Police said they found two other loaded firearms in his car.
CNN - The New York Police Department officer seen on video putting a man into a chokehold during an arrest over the weekend was arrested and charged Thursday, the NYPD said in a statement.
The officer, David Afanador, 39, was charged with "attempted strangulation" and "strangulation," the statement read.
Afanador probably would be arraigned Thursday morning, the Queens District Attorney's Office tells CNN.
The NYPD suspended Afanador without pay after cellphone video surfaced showing officers tackling 35-year-old Ricky Bellevue and Afanador putting his arm around Bellevue’s neck as he lay face down on the boardwalk.
Bellevue’s lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, said in a statement that Afanador’s arrest is the “first step in getting justice for Ricky Bellevue.”
“The next step is for this police officer to be convicted and sentenced to jail,” Rubenstein said.
The New York City Council last week passed a package of police reform measures, including an official ban on chokeholds. The bills passed amid nationwide protests spurred by the death of George Floyd after a Minneapolis police officer pressed a knee to his neck for several minutes.

NASCAR released the clearest photo on Thursday of the garage pull rope that was mistaken for a noose in the garage of Bubba Wallace, NASCAR's only Black driver in the Cup Series, prior to the GEICO 500 at Talladega. The image shows the rope tied into what could be interpreted as a noose.
After an investigation from the FBI and NASCAR, it was found that no hate crime that had been committed against Wallace when the rope was originally found. Wallace went on CNN afterwards to assert that regardless of whether it was something intended for him or not, the rope was still a noose.
According to Wallace's retelling of the incident, NASCAR president Steve Phelps was the first to inform the No. 43 driver that this was found in his garage. The rope itself was reportedly found by a staffer, who reported it to the proper authorities.
In a press conference given Thursday, Phelps pointed out that no other garage had anything similar to the type of knot that was tied at the end of Wallace's garage rope. He also apologized using poor word choice in NASCAR's initial statement following the finding of the noose.
Around the time that the noose was found in Wallace's garage, protestors were driving outside of Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama protesting NASCAR's decision to ban the confederate flag at all future events. A plane even flew above the track with the phrase "Defund NASCAR" over the confederate flag on a banner. during the race. This was less than a week after Wallace had driven a Black Lives Matter scheme car at Martinsville.
NASCAR inspected 1,684 garage stalls at all 29 tracks in which they race. They found only 11 garages that had a pull-down rope tied in a knot, and only one noose - the one in Bubba Wallace's garage.https://t.co/b648rQ2EDv

Jeremy Christian’s sentencing hearing started off with an outburst Tuesday, when moments into the hearing Christian told one of his surviving victims that he regretted not killing her. Deputies swiftly escorted him out of the courtroom.
Christian lost his composure as one of those victims, Demetria Hester, who suffered a serious eye injury after Christian struck her in the face with a half-filled Gatorade bottle -- described him as a white supremacist and a plague on society.
“You are a waste of breath,” said victim Demetria Hester. “And when you die and go to hell, I hope you rot.”
Christian responded: “See you there.” He shouted derogatory names at Hester, called her a liar and exclaimed, “I should have killed you!” At one point, inexplicably, Christian also yelled “George Floyd! George Floyd!”
"His behavior today was especially egregious so he has forfeited his right to be here during sentencing," said Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Cheryl Albrecht.
In February, a 12-person jury unanimously found Christian guilty of the murders of Taliesin Namkai-Meche, 23, and Ricky Best, 53. and the attempted first-degree murder of Micah Fletcher for stabbing all three men in the neck on a Green Line train as it pulled into Northeast Portland’s Hollywood Transit Center on May 26, 2017.
According to evidence presented at trial, Namkai-Meche had approached Christian with his phone, apparently in an attempt to record Christian’s racist tirade. After Christian swatted Namkai-Meche’s phone onto the train’s floor and shoved Fletcher and Namkai-Meche, Fletcher repeatedly shoved Christian and told him to get off the train. That’s when Christian stabbed both of them and Best, who was standing nearby.
Among other crimes, jurors also found Christian guilty of hate crimes for threatening to harm two teenage girls, who were 16 and 17 at the time and were riding the train to Clackamas Town Center. One of them is African American and the other is an immigrant from Somalia, who was wearing a hijab. Witnesses said Christian unleashed a vile torrent about Muslims, Christians and Jews dying, spoke of beheadings and shouted, “Go home, we need American here!”

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (CBS46) – Three men charged in the death of Ahmaud Arbery were indicted Wednesday afternoon on multiple charges, Cobb County District Attorney Joyette Holmes said during a press conference.
The indictment formally charges each of the three defendants with nine counts: malice murder, felony murder (four counts), aggravated assault (two counts), false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment.
"This is another step forward in seeking justice for Ahmaud. Our team from the Cobb Judicial Circuit has been committed to effectively bringing forward the evidence in this case, and today was no exception," Holmes said. "We will continue to be intentional in the pursuit of justice for this family and the community at large as the prosecution of this case continues."
Arbery was killed Feb. 23 when a white father and son armed themselves and pursued the 25-year-old black man after spotting him running in their neighborhood just outside the port city of Brunswick. Gregory McMichael, 64, and Travis McMichael, 34, were arrested May 7 on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault.
A neighbor of the McMichaels, 50-year-old William “Roddie” Bryan Jr., was later arrested and charged with felony murder and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment. Bryan is the man whose cellphone video of the shooting, which leaked online before the McMichaels' arrests, ignited a national outcry over the case.
Gregory McMichael told police he suspected Arbery was a burglar and that Arbery attacked his son right before being shot. Arbery's family has said he was merely out jogging.
Bryan's attorney, Kevin Gough, has insisted his client played no role in Arbery's death. The arrest warrant for Bryan says he used a vehicle to illegally try to “confine and detain” Arbery.
NFL safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix shared on Instagram security footage of his close encounter with an adult bear and its cub. The video shows the former Bears player on his scooter, abruptly dropping it and running away upon seeing the wild animals.
VALDOSTA – A 46-year-old Black man has sued the city police department claiming excessive force in a Feb. 8 incident where he was mistaken for a suspect in a panhandling investigation. His attorney is calling the incident a civil rights violation.
The city said Monday it is reviewing the incident and has posted body camera video along with a statement on social media.
Attorney Nathaniel Haugabrook of Copeland, Haugabrook and Walker said officers injured his client, Antonio Arnelo Smith, and violated his rights after they mistook him for a suspect.
The lawsuit was filed Friday afternoon in federal court and names Valdosta Mayor Scott James Matheson, members of the Valdosta City Council, Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan, three Valdosta patrolmen and one police sergeant as defendants.
The lawsuit demands a jury trial.
The suit states: “Defendants’ actions, omissions and deliberate indifference to violations of clearly established constitutional rights caused Mr. Smith to suffer physical, mental and emotional injuries.”
Haugabrook contends Smith’s arm was broken during the interaction with the police and Smith has had to endure physical therapy because of it.
Smith is asking for compensation and punitive damages in the amount of $700,000, according to the lawsuit.
