LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles judge on Wednesday sentenced the man convicted of gunning down Nipsey Hussle to 60 years to life in prison.

Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke II handed down the sentence to Eric R. Holder Jr., 33, who was found guilty of the 2019 first-degree murder of the 33-year-old Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist outside the clothing store Hussle founded, the Marathon, in the South Los Angeles neighborhood where both men grew up.

After the monthlong trial, jurors in July also convicted Holder of 2 counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter & 2 counts of assault with a firearm for gunfire that hit 2 other men at the scene who survived.

Jacke sentenced Holder to 25 years to life for the murder, 25 more for a firearm sentencing enhancement & 10 for assault with a firearm. He set several other sentencing additions and ordered that others run concurrent. He also gave Holder credit for the nearly 4 years he has served since the shooting.

Hussle, whose legal name is Ermias Asghedom & Holder had known each other for years growing up as members of the Rollin’ 60s in South LA.

The evidence against Holder was so overwhelming — from eyewitnesses to surveillance cameras from local businesses that captured his arrival, the shooting & his departure — that his attorney conceded during trial that he had shot Hussle.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A boat carrying Haitian migrants apparently capsized off the Bahamas early Sunday & Bahamian security forces recovered the bodies of 17 people & rescued 25 others.

It wasn’t clear if there were any people missing after the boat sank about 7 miles from New Providence.

Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis said in a statement that the dead included 15 women, one man & an infant.

Davis said investigators had determined that a twin-engine speed boat left the Bahamas about 1 a.m. carrying as many as 60 people, apparently bound for Miami.

Davis said a criminal investigation had begun into the suspected human smuggling operation.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he sympathized with the parents of the victims.

“This new drama saddens the whole nation,” he said. “I launch, once again, an appeal for national reconciliation in order to solve the problems that are driving away, far from our soil, our brothers, our sisters, our children.”

A year after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse last July, gang violence has grown worse & Haiti has gone into a freefall that has seen the economy tumble. Attempts to form a coalition government have faltered & efforts to hold general elections have stalled. The turmoil has led a growing number of people to flee the country of more than 11 million in search of a better & safer life.

AKRON, Ohio (WKYC) — Autopsy records confirm that an unarmed Akron man was struck dozens of times by a barrage of more than 90 shots fired by police officers following a chase early Monday morning.

The volume of gunfire & extensive wounds have caused police & city officials to prepare for potential public backlash. The response is expected to only intensify when Akron Police release body camera footage in the coming days.

“Use of force cases are always ugly. This case is ugly times 10,” a police official said.

Jayland Walker’s death has been ruled a homicide.

Ohotos provided Wednesday confirm that 8 officers fired more than 90 shots, causing more than 60 wounds to Walker’s body.

Autopsy records, including about 150 photos of Walker’s wounds and about 60 photos of bullet fragments. A large majority of the wounds were to the front of Walker’s body. Wounds could be seen from his face down to his lower legs.

Akron police say they attempted to stop Walker’s car just after midnight Monday for a traffic infraction & equipment issue. Walker instead led the officers on a high-speed chase.

At some point, police say Walker fired a gun. One casing was found in Walker’s car & a second was found on the roadway.

The 4 1/2-minute chase with speeds reaching about 80 mph. Walker, 25, eventually jumped out of the car.

Police say they first deployed their tasers, but ultimately opened fire after they said Walker made motions that caused them to fear bodily harm.

Some of the last shots were fired while Walker’s body was on the pavement. Autopsy records show he was handcuffed after the shooting. He was not armed at the time he was shot.

A gun, however, was recovered inside Walker’s car, the same sources confirmed.

It is unclear why Walker fled police. He has no past criminal records aside from a speeding ticket.

Seven of the eight officers are white. Walker is Black.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The leader of a crime gang notorious for siphoning gasoline from government fuel ducts has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for kidnapping.

José Antonio Yépez Ortiz had been one of Mexico’s most wanted suspects prior to his arrest on Aug. 2, 2020, following a shootout with police. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador praised the arrest at the time as “important, very important.”

The gang had long fought a bloody turf battle with the Jalisco cartel & authorities blamed him for much of the violence in the industrial & farming state of Guanajuato.

The state Attorney General’s Office said late Friday that the man known as “El Marro” — which means “The Sledgehammer” — was sentenced by a court in the region. Local news media said he still faces charges of attempted homicide, robbery of fuel & organized crime.

Yépez Ortíz’s Santa Rosa de Lima gang got its start robbing freight trains & stealing from fuel pipelines but branched out into extortion & other crimes — especially after López Obrador declared war on pipeline taps & temporarily shut off the flow of fuel early in his administration.

Yépez Ortiz was unusual among gang leaders in posting videos with emotional calls to his followers, including one a few months before his own arrest in which he appeared to cry after several of his supporters & relatives were arrested. In another video around the same time, he threatened to join forces with the Sinaloa cartel to combat Jalisco.

The turf battle with Jalisco turned Guanajuato, with its foreign auto plants & tourist towns like San Miguel de Allende, into the most violent state in Mexico.

In this clip, TK Kirkland weighed in on Soulja Boy operating as a new TK of sorts by taking credit for most things like people joke about TK doing all the time. He said that people have to be there to believe things or have a white man confirm the story for them to take it as the truth. Later, TK talked about all the money that's available for people through the PPP Loan which he says is an acronym for "Playa, Playa, Playa."

Chicago’s top cop is again calling for community partnerships and additional investments in South and West Side neighborhoods after yet another violent weekend that saw 11 homicides and more than 60 people shot.

Chicago police Superintendent David Brown on Monday said he’s already planning to expand a new community policing initiative launched just last week to help grow relationships between police and residents, as gun violence continued to spike over the weekend.

“We should not be seen as an occupying force only there for enforcement,” Brown said during a press conference Monday morning. “So I would say standby. You’ll see community policing on steroids in this department.”

Between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, 11 people were murdered and 53 others were wounded in 50 separate shooting incidents, according to Brown. Of those 64 total victims, six were children.

Among the weekend violence was a shooting in Englewood that left a 45-year-old man dead and three others injured Sunday night. A 20-year-old man was also killed and two teens were injured in a shooting late Sunday at a West Englewood gas station.

The violence continued into early Monday morning with at least two additional homicides: a 26-year-old man was shot and killed in North Lawndale at around 12:30 a.m., and a 27-year-old man was fatally shot in Woodlawn around 1:45 a.m.

Chicago police have recovered 5,100 illegal guns so far this year, Brown said, including 98 in the past week.

Brown’s press conferences have become a grim weekly occurrence as of late following spikes in gun violence weekend after weekend. At least 17 people were killed over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Fourteen people, including three children, were killed the weekend prior to that, and through June, Chicago had matched it’s 2016 homicide pace – a year that finished with more than 760 murders citywide.

The CPD launched a new initiative Saturday with its Summer Mobile Patrol beginning to participate in community service projects every week across Chicago in what the department said is an effort to both tackle serious crimes and address the root causes of violence.

On Monday, Brown said he now wants that patrol to engage in service projects not just once a week, but every single day.

The superintendent has spoken repeatedly in recent weeks about the “open air drug markets” that he said are a main driver of violence and a “pipeline” into the criminal justice system. Brown said policing alone cannot solve these problems, and has called for additional investments and job opportunities in needy neighborhoods.

“If the biggest employer on the West Side for these young people is the drug market, the challenge and the answer is much more than policing,” he said.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot echoed those comments at a separate press conference Monday, but said the city has already begun investing in mental health, affordable housing and street outreach and intervention at “historic” levels.

“You look at the root causes of violence, this is generations of lack of investment. Generations where we really haven’t created real opportunities, particularly for young men of color, and they believe their destiny is on a (street) corner,” she said.

“We’re not gonna change that around in a few weeks, but I think the efforts that we are doing both on the short-term interventions, also the longer term strategy, we’re starting to see some difference. Is anybody satisfied with where we are? Of course not. So we’ve got to redouble our efforts.”

Imagine living in a place where every two hours someone is shot, and every 14 hours someone is murdered. It isn’t Iraq or Afghanistan, but one of the biggest and most sophisticated cities in the world: Chicago. On the city’s south side, which is considered the heart of black America, gang rivalry is tearing its people apart. It has become so brutal that both police and the perpetrators agree this urban warfare is out of control

Rick Ross walked out of a Fayette County, Georgia courtroom a free man Tuesday, April 4, after cutting a plea deal in a case that involved the alleged kidnapping and physical assault of two groundskeepers.

The 41-year old rapper, born William Roberts, faced felony counts of kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and other charges stemming from a June 2015 attack at his Fayetteville estate. He was also accused of pistol whipping one of the men.

During negotiations with Ross' lawyers today, prosecutors agreed to drop most of the charges to misdemeanors and he accepted.

According to TMZ, the Maybach Music Group CEO, pleaded no contest to 5 misdemeanors and 1 felony count of aggravated assault. He was sentenced to 60 months probation and a fine of $10,000.

“The resolution to the case was reached after discussion with the prosecution team, victims and law enforcement,” Fayette County District Attorney Benjamin D. Coker said, via the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “It was the best resolution to the case considering the facts and circumstances at hand.”

Ross' bodyguard, Nadrian Lateef James, was also charged in the incident and received the same sentence,

"First and foremost, I wanna say God is great," Ross said outside of the courtroom. "I respect and appreciate how the court chose to resolve, not only myself, but my co-defendant's cases."

Video After The Jump

(Reuters) Around 60 people have been killed in a bloody prison riot sparked by a war between rival drug gangs in the Amazon jungle city of Manaus, officials said on Monday, in some of the worst violence in years in Brazil's overcrowded penitentiary system.

The head of security for Amazonas state, Sergio Fontes, told a news conference that the death toll could rise as authorities get a clearer idea of the scale of the rebellion sparked by a fight between rival drug gangs.

12352486896?profile=original

Manaus' Em Tempo newspaper reported that several of the dead had their decapitated bodies thrown over the prison wall.

The riot began late Sunday and was brought under control by around 7 a.m. on Monday, Fontes said. Authorities were still counting the prisoners to determine how many had escaped, he added.

12352487264?profile=original

International watchdog groups sharply criticize Brazil for its prison system, where overcrowding is the norm and deadly riots routinely break out.

The massacre was the latest clash between inmates aligned with the Sao Paulo-based First Capital Command (PCC) drug gang, Brazil's most powerful, and a local Manaus criminal group known as the North Family.

The Manaus-based gang is widely believed to be attacking PCC inmates at the behest of the Rio de Janeiro-based Red Command (CV) drug gang, Brazil's second largest.

Security analysts have said that a truce that held for years between the PCC and CV was broken last year, resulting in months of deadly prison battles between the gangs and sparking fears that chaos will spread to other prisons.

Families of prisoners outside the jail as some of the bodies are removed

In the latest riot, a group of inmates exchanged gunfire with police and held 12 prison guards hostage late on Sunday in the largest prison in Manaus, an industrial city on the banks of the Amazon River, Globo TV reported.

Fontes said that 74 prisoners were taken hostage during the riot, with some executed and some released.

A video posted on the website of the Manaus-based newspaper Em Tempo showed dozens of bloodied and mutilated bodies piled atop each other on the prison floor as other inmates milled about.

Brazil's prison system is precariously overcrowded and conditions in many institutions are horrific. That has sparked a rash of deadly riots in recent years.

Sunday's riot was the deadliest in years. A 1992 rebellion at the Carandiru prison in Sao Paulo state saw 111 inmates killed, nearly all of them by police as they retook the jail.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Carrie Fisher, who found enduring fame as Princess Leia in the original "Star Wars," has died. She was 60.

Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, released a statement through her spokesman saying Fisher died Tuesday morning in Los Angeles.

"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning," read the statement from publicist Simon Halls. "She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly."

Fisher had been hospitalized since Friday when she suffered a medical emergency on board a flight to Los Angeles.

Carrie Fisher

She made her feature film debut opposite Warren Beatty in the 1975 hit "Shampoo." Fisher also appeared in "Austin Powers," ''The Blues Brothers," ''Charlie's Angels," ''Hannah and Her Sisters," ''Scream 3" and "When Harry Met Sally ..."

But she is best remembered as Princess Leia in the original "Star Wars" in 1977 with her now-iconic braided buns, who uttered the immortal phrase, "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope." Fisher played a part in which she was tough, feisty and powerful, even if at one point she was chained to Jabba the Hutt. (She reprised the role in Episode VII of the series, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2015, and her digitally rendered image appears in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.")

12352482674?profile=original

Fisher long battled drug addiction and mental illness. She said she smoked pot at age 13, used LSD by 21 and was first diagnosed as bipolar at age 24. She was treated with electroconvulsive therapy and medication.

In 1987, her thinly veiled autobiography "Postcards From the Edge" became a best seller. It became a 1990 film starring Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep.

More books followed: "Delusions of Grandma," ''Surrender the Pink," ''The Best Awful," ''Shockaholic" and this year's autobiography, "The Princess Diarist," in which she revealed that she and co-star Harrison Ford had an affair on the set of "Star Wars."

Ever ready to satirize herself, she has even played Carrie Fisher a few times, as in David Cronenberg's dark Hollywood sendup "Maps to the Stars" and in an episode of "Sex and the City." In the past 15 years, Fisher also had a somewhat prolific career as a television guest star, recently in the Amazon show "Catastrophe" as the mother of Rob Delaney's lead, and perhaps most memorably as a has-been comedy legend on "30 Rock."

Her one-woman show, "Wishful Drinking," which she's performed on and off across the country since 2006, was turned into a book, made its way to Broadway in 2009 and was captured for HBO in 2010.

Little was off-limits in the show. She discussed the scandal that engulfed her superstar parents, Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher (he ran off with Elizabeth Taylor); her brief marriage to singer Paul Simon; the time the father of her daughter left her for a man; and the day she woke up next to the dead body of a platonic friend who had overdosed in her bed.

"I'm a product of Hollywood inbreeding. When two celebrities mate, something like me is the result," she said in the show. At another point, she cracked: "I don't have a problem with drugs so much as I have a problem with sobriety."

"She was funnier&smarter than anyone had the right to be," Whoopi Goldberg wrote on Twitter Tuesday. "Sail On Silver Girl. Condolences Debbie & Billie."

"Hail Hail! A genius has vacated this realm-RIP Carrie Fisher," Roseanne Barr posted on the site.

Besides her daughter, Fisher is survived by her brother, Todd Fisher, and her mother.

In a 2009 interview with The Associated Press, Fisher wasn't coy about revealing details about her unusual life, whether it was about drug addiction, mental illness or her failed relationships. She hoped to destigmatize mental health problems.

"People relate to aspects of my stories and that's nice for me because then I'm not all alone with it," she said. "Also, I do believe you're only as sick as your secrets. If that's true, I'm just really healthy."

Video And Pics After The Jump

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kobe Bryant scored 60 incredible points. He carried a miserable Los Angeles Lakers team to an improbable comeback victory.

And with sweat and confetti all over his gold uniform for the final time, he expressed humble thanks to his fans and family for their loving support over two decades.

"What else can I say?" Bryant asked. "Mamba out."

Now that's a Hollywood ending to a remarkable career.

Bryant utterly dominated his final game Wednesday night, wrapping up 20 NBA seasons with one last offensive showcase in the Lakers' 101-96 victory over the Utah Jazz.

He scored 23 points in the fourth quarter, posting his first 50-point game since February 2009 and rallying the Lakers from a 15-point deficit to win the final game of the worst season in franchise history.

460x.jpg

It was messy, ridiculous and magical — even to the man who did it so many times over 20 years.

"It's hard to believe it happened this way," Bryant said. "I'm still shocked about it."

With the entire Staples Center crowd standing, Bryant made a 3-pointer with 59 seconds left. He hit another with 31 seconds to play, putting the Lakers ahead 97-96. He finished with an assist before checking out for good with 4.1 seconds left in just the Lakers' 17th win of the season.

"The perfect ending would have been a championship," Bryant said with a smile. "But tonight was (me) trying to go out, play hard and try to put on a show as much as I possibly could. It felt good to be able to do that one last time."

460x.jpg

Bryant and his teammates conspired for one last omnivorous scoring performance by the third-leading scorer in NBA history. He played 42 minutes and took a career-high 50 shots, his teammates attempting to set him up for points on nearly every possession.

Kobe came up with the fifth highest-scoring game of his career. He became the oldest player to score 50 points in an NBA game with his highest-scoring performance since getting 61 against New York in 2009 — oh, and he had four assists and four rebounds.

The Lakers sprayed him with champagne in the locker room, although he didn't like it: "That's only for championships."

It was still one last classic from the Black Mamba.

"It just didn't surprise me, the way he would go out," said Lakers coach Byron Scott, Bryant's teammate in his rookie season. "Sixty points wasn't a surprise. I knew he had it in him."

The entire night was a tribute to Bryant, who is retiring after 20 seasons, five championship rings and 18 All-Star selections with the Lakers, who honored him before and after the game. Bryant is just the fifth player in NBA history to play 20 seasons, and the first with just one team.

"I think the most important part is that we all stayed together throughout," Bryant said to the crowd. "You'll always be in my heart, and I sincerely, sincerely appreciate it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you guys."

He also had a few laughs after finishing his 1,346th regular-season game with 33,643 career points.

460x.jpg

"The thing that had me cracking up all night long is, I go through 20 years of everybody screaming to pass the ball," Bryant said with a grin. "And then the last night, they're like, 'Don't pass it!'"

460x.jpg

It was daylong tribute with thousands of fans thronging the downtown streets around Staples Center and chanting his name from early afternoon. Fans lucky enough to get inside Staples Center greeted him with ovations at every opportunity. Magic Johnson anchored a brief pregame tribute by calling Bryant "the biggest and greatest celebrity we've had in this town for 20 years" and "the greatest to wear the purple and gold."

Bryant embraced his roles as a hero and villain throughout his career, and he mentioned the duality in describing his outlook on sports afterward. He had rocky times in Los Angeles, from his sexual assault charge in Colorado in 2003 to his feud with Shaquille O'Neal, who watched the finale at courtside.

460x.jpg

It was all forgotten by the time Bryant took the Staples court for the final time.

After blowing kisses and pounding his heart before the game, Bryant got right to work on what the fans wanted to see. He didn't count on the nerves that caused him to miss his first five shots before he pump-faked and finally connected on a jumper.

Bryant found a rhythm then, finishing the first quarter with 15 points on 13 shots. He kept it up after sitting out the first six minutes of the second, finishing with 22 points despite missing a last-minute shot, his 20th of the first half.

The Lakers snapped a six-game skid in their final outing, but their demanding fans could forget about the awful season for one night.

Trey Lyles scored 18 points and Gordon Hayward had 17 for the Jazz, who were eliminated from playoff contention shortly before tipoff by Houston's win over the Sacramento Kings. The Jazz played defense, but Bryant's persistence wore them down.

460x.jpg

"We weren't trying to let him go off on a win," said Joe Ingles, who guarded Bryant closely. "As it goes on, it will sink in more, and what he did was pretty impressive. He made some tough shots, too. I don't think we gave him any open looks. He was obviously pretty hyped up for the game. Forty-two minutes and 50 attempts will get you 60, apparently."

TIP-INS

Jazz: Utah has missed the playoffs in four straight seasons, its longest drought since 1980-83. ... The Jazz rested Trey Burke, Derrick Favors and Alec Burks. Favors and Burks have right knee soreness.

460x.jpg

Lakers: Bryant surpassed his previous career high of 47 shots, taken in a loss to Boston on Nov. 7, 2002. ... Los Angeles has missed the playoffs in three straight seasons, the longest drought in franchise history. ... Bryant shot his 10,000th free throw to complete an early three-point play. ... Jordan Clarkson's 12 points were the second-most by the Lakers.

Hall of Fame NBA player Moses Malone passed away Sunday, September 13, at the of 60, according to ESPN.

Malone is widely considered to be one of the top centers to ever play the game.

During his 19 seasons in the league, Malone scored 27,409 points, grabbed 16,212 rebounds and blocked 1,733 shots, during the regular season. He was a three-time NBA MVP. In 1996, Malone was named one of the league's 50 greatest players.

The man known as "The Chairman of the Boards" led the Philadelphia 76ers to a championship in 1983, where he was named MVP.

"It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Sixers family mourns the sudden loss of Moses Malone. It is difficult to express what his contributions to this organization -- both as a friend and player -- have meant to us, the city of Philadelphia and his faithful fans," the 76ers said in a statement Sunday. "Moses holds a special place in our hearts and will forever be remembered as a genuine icon and pillar of the most storied era in the history of Philadelphia 76ers basketball. No one person has ever conveyed more with so few words - including three of the most iconic in this city's history. His generosity, towering personality and incomparable sense of humor will truly be missed. We will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers and as we are once again reminded of the preciousness of life."

Malone also played for the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Washington Bullets, Milwaukee Bucks and San Antonio Spurs in his career.

Video After The Jump

Three Flint, Michigan residents have been arrested in connection with a video that has been circulating on the internet showing an 11-year old boy being whipped with a belt 60 times.

Demitria Powell, 28, Uteas Taylor, 42, and Stefon Felton, 39, have been charged with three felony child abuse counts, conspiracy to commit third-degree child abuse and committing child abuse in front of a minor.

Powell is the boy's mother. Taylos is his grandmother. All three were arraigned Tuesday, April 8, in front of Flint District Judge Nathaniel C. Perry III.

The trio posted a video that depicted Powell slapping the child in the face and Taylor whipping him with a belt 60 times, while a toddler was present.

The 11-year old was reportedly being disciplined for acting like a "gangster" and "thug" and for poor grades in school.

Powell forces the boy to look into the camera and state his name. She tells him the video will be posted on Facebook. She also says she doesn't care if anyone calls Child Protective Services.

Powell's boyfriend mocks the child while he is being beaten and says he can't show his face on camera because he's spent ten years in prison.

“The adults in this case clearly went beyond what is a reasonable level of ‘parental
discipline,’” said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton in a statement.  “What the video in this case reveals is a group of adults whose actions were a criminal assault against a child and that behavior cannot be condoned nor allowed under the law."

Powell was already on probation for a previous misdemeanor. She was $7,500 bond on all three charges by Judge Perry III.

Taylor and Felton were given $8,500 bond on each charge. All three remain in custody.

Video After The Jump

Actions speak louder than words. That's certainly the case with Compton, California emcee YG when it comes to spreading holiday cheer.

He recently took 60 underprivileged kids from regional group homes on a shopping spree. The kids were picked after taking part in a statewide essay. The winners were given $1560 each to spend as they pleased and treated to lunch.

That's wassup.
