Video After The Jump

Washington released 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins on Monday, less than 24 hours after he committed three turnovers in a loss to Carolina and in the aftermath of another violation of pandemic protocols.

Haskins started in place of injured quarterback Alex Smith despite being disciplined for breaking COVID-19 rules by partying with several people without a mask. He was fined $40,000 and stripped of his captaincy, but coach Ron Rivera opted to stick with Haskins because Smith was still injured and he didn’t have another established QB on the roster.

“My time with the WFT has unfortunately come to an end,” Haskins tweeted. “I thank the team & fans for the opportunity to play for the team I grew up rooting for. I take full responsibility for not meeting the standards of an NFL QB & will become a better man & player because of this experience.”

“Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can dig your way back out of it,” Rivera said. “I hope he learns from these experiences. Hopefully, they’ll make him stronger and they’ll help him and, hopefully, when he gets his next opportunity, he’ll make the best of it.”

“You watch his talent, and you see the arm,” Rivera said. “That’s the thing that I think is his most redeeming quality as a quarterback, which I think is probably the most important thing.”

But it’s far from the only thing, his off-field behavior outweighed his potential. A favorite of owner Dan Snyder’s from his time at a Washington-area high school, Haskins missed the final play of his first NFL victory last year while taking a photo with a fan in the stands, disappeared from practice with a mysterious illness after being benched and demoted in October and twice violated rules for conduct in the middle of a pandemic.

Washington’s previous regime drafted Haskins 15th overall in 2019, the third QB taken after Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones. He finishes his time with the organization 3-10 as the starter, including 1-5 this season, with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

The Franklin County Coroner's Office released the preliminary autopsy results for Andre' Hill, the man killed by a Columbus police officer, on Monday.

Hill was shot by Officer Adam Coy on Dec. 22. Coy was responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 1000 block of Oberlin Drive.

Coy did not turn on his body-worn camera until after the shooting. The camera does have a feature that records 60 seconds prior to it being turned out but it records no audio.

In the video, Coy is shown walking up to an open garage where Hill inside.

Hill walked from behind a parked car toward Coy holding a phone in his left hand.

Coy then fires at Hill, striking him. Hill later died at a local hospital.

In the coroner's office report, Hill's preliminary cause of death is listed as multiple gunshot wounds. They also list his manner of death as a homicide.

According to Cornell Law School's Legal Information Institute, the definition of homicide "is when one human being causes the death of another. Not all homicide is murder, as some killings are manslaughter, and some are lawful, such as when justified by an affirmative defense, like insanity or self-defense."

The coroner's office says a full report and autopsy are anticipated in 12 to 14 weeks.

Coy has been relieved of duty and has turned in his badge and gun. Columbus Police Chief Thomas Quinlan has recommended the termination of Coy.

A disciplinary hearing for Coy was held Monday morning. Columbus Public Safety Director Ned Pettus Jr. will be reviewing the evidence before announcing a decision on Coy's employment.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation into the shooting.

Dr. Dre is warning his estranged wife ... the party's over when it comes to money, because he claims he's giving her way more now than she'll get when the divorce is final.

As we reported, Dre says he's been footing the bill for all Nicole Young's expenses, to the tune of $293,306 a month while the divorce winds its way through the courts.

TMZ broke the story ... Dre is hanging his hat on a prenup that says all of their property is separate, although she's entitled to spousal support if they divorce. Nicole claims Dre tore up the prenup shortly after their 1996 marriage, but he denies that.

Nicole has filed legal docs asking for $2 million a month in temporary spousal support.

Sources connected to Dre tell TMZ, the court-approved schedule establishing the factors in computing spousal support entitles Nicole to somewhere between $138,622 and $81,002 a month. As one source told TMZ, "Once this case is resolved and Dre discontinues his current practice of paying for all of her expenses, Nicole is going to have to learn to tighten that belt."

We've learned Dre has now filed a police report, claiming Nicole embezzled a total of $385,029 from one of Dre's companies. They further claim when Nicole was asked about it during her deposition, she took the 5th. Her lawyers have previously said she was entitled to the money.

We reached out to Nicole's camp ... so far, no word back.

Jessie J is on the mend.

Last week, the 32-year-old singer revealed on her Instagram Story that she was hospitalized on Thursday with Meniere's disease, a disorder that affects the inner ear and causes episodes of vertigo and loss of hearing, according to the Mayo Clinic.

"I woke up and felt like I was completely deaf in my right ear, couldn’t walk in a straight line," Jessie J said in a post on Saturday, according to ET Canada. "Basically I got told I had Meniere’s syndrome."

"I know that a lot of people suffer from it and I've actually had a lot of people reach out to me and give me great advice, so I've just been laying low in silence," she continued. "Now's the first time I’ve been able to sing and bear it. It could be way worse, it is what it is. I'm super grateful for my health. It just threw me off."

Jessie J added: "But I’m glad I went early and they worked out what it was real quick and I got put on the right medicine so I feel a lot better today. I haven’t sung for so long and when I sing loud, it sounds like there's someone trying to run out of my ear."

A bust sculpture honoring police shooting victim Breonna Taylor was smashed by vandals over the weekend, prompting a probe by Oakland police, according to reports.

The memorial, installed two weeks ago in downtown Latham Square, was smashed in several places sometime Saturday, ABC affiliate KGO-TV reported.

The bust includes a plaque that reads: “Say Her Name, Breonna Taylor,” the station said.

“At first I was stunned and shocked and hurt and angry,” artist Leo Carson, who created the sculpture, told the outlet.

“Just a whole bunch of emotions,” he said. “It felt like I was personally attacked and also they attacked Breonna Taylor and the BLM movement.”

Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT technician, was shot and killed in her home in Louisville, Kentucky, during a botched raid on March 13.

Taylor’s death, and the May 25 police-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, were among the catalysts that sparked massive Black Lives Matter protests throughout the world, including in the Bay Area city.

Oakland police said in a statement that a report had been filed in the vandalism of the Taylor bust and that police were investigating the incident, the Mercury News said.

Carson said he paid for the statue “out of my own pocket.”

He hopes to raise enough money to repair the statue and have it bronzed to make it more durable. He’s launched a GoFundMe page with a goal of $5,000.

A former music producer who previously worked with Snoop Dogg received a pardon from President Trump on December 22.

Weldon Angelos was busted in Salt Lake City during an undercover sting for selling weed to undercover agents and having a concealed weapon. In 2004, he was convicted and given a 55-year sentence without the possibility of parole.

In 2016, a federal court reduced his sentence and Angelos was released following a successful lobbying campaign from Alicia Keys, Rand Paul, Cory Booker, Snoop, Charles Koch, Mike Lee, prison reform advocate Alice Johnson, former U.S. Attorney Bret Tolman, former Utah Governor Norm Bangerter, former Senator Jake Garn and many more.

His newfound freedom was everything Angelos could have hoped for ... almost. He was still a convicted felon, but the pardon has expunged his record.

“All my civil rights have been restored,” Angelos told Forbes. “I no longer have to check that box that says I’m a felon on nearly every job application, bank loan, et cetera. I couldn’t rent apartments or homes in nice areas with a felony. I can go hunting again. It’s like my federal criminal case never happened.”

Since his release Angelos has been an advocate for prison reform.

Video After The Jump

A woman falsely accused a jazz musician’s 14-year-old son of stealing her cellphone — lunging at the teen during a wild caught-on-camera incident in the lobby of a Manhattan hotel.

Footage of the altercation, posted by trumpeter Keyon Harrold on his Instagram page, was shared widely on Sunday, with many saying it was yet another example of racial profiling and bogus accusations launched against black people.

"The lady in this video assaulted my 14-year-old son and me as we came down from our room in the @arlohotels Arlo Soho to get breakfast. This person quote on quote “lost” her iPhone, and apparently, my son magically acquired it, which merely ridiculous," Harrold captioned the video." This incident went on for five more minutes, me protecting my son from this lunatic. She scratched me; she Tackled and grabbed him. He is a child!!! This lady is not even a guest at the hotel. She checked out of the hotel on the 23rd of December; today is the 26th. Now watch as the manager advocates for the lady who is not even a hotel guest, insisting and attempting to use his managerial authority to force my son to show his phone to this random lady. He actually empowered her!!! He didn't even consider the fact we were actually the guests! Now think about the trauma that my son now has to carry, only coming downstairs to have box day brunch with his dad. Then... her phone was magically returned by an Uber driver a few minutes after this incident."

Arlo Hotel later issued a weak apology for how the situation was handled. Saying the manager called the police, but they could have done a better job of deescalating the dispute.

The unidentified accuser has not apologized to Harrold or his son, and should have been arrested for assault.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Two Florida men, including an underground rap artist known as Splash Zanotti, appeared in federal court Christmas day in connection with a home invasion two months ago, in which authorities said the men terrorized a couple, demanded $20,000 and sexually assaulted a woman.

A third man is set to appear before a judge on Monday.

Federal authorities described Splash Zanotti, whose real name is Kejuan Brandon Campbell, as the ringleader of the group.

A federal criminal affidavit said Splash Zanotti and his two accomplices, Dionte Alexander-Wilcox and Antonio James, forced their way into the couple’s Miramar home at gunpoint while wearing masks on the afternoon of Oct. 11. They told the couple they came to collect a debt, although an official described the man and woman as innocent victims.

Citing court documents, the SunSentinel reported that the terror went on for hours after the three men broke into the couple’s home. They forced the woman to drive from ATM to ATM to withdraw cash. At one point, one of the intruders raped her while her husband went to the garage for a cigarette, a criminal affidavit states.

The three are accused of kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping, crimes that carry a maximum penalty of life in prison if convicted. Alexander-Wilcox is also accused of being a felon in possession of a weapon. No charges have been filed in the alleged rape.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Unemployment benefits for millions of Americans struggling to make ends meet lapsed overnight as President Donald Trump refused to sign an end-of-year COVID relief and spending bill that had been considered a done deal before his sudden objections.

The fate of the bipartisan package remained in limbo Sunday as Trump continued to demand larger COVID relief checks and complained about “pork” spending. Without the widespread funding provided by the massive measure, a government shutdown would occur when money runs out at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

“It’s a chess game and we are pawns,” said Lanetris Haines, a self-employed single mother of three in South Bend, Indiana, who stood to lose her $129 weekly jobless benefit unless Trump signed the package into law or succeeded in his improbable quest for changes.

Washington has been reeling since Trump turned on the deal after it had won sweeping approval in both houses of Congress and after the White House had assured Republican leaders that Trump would support it.

Instead, he assailed the bill’s plan to provide $600 COVID relief checks to most Americans — insisting it should be $2,000. House Republicans swiftly rejected that idea during a rare Christmas Eve session. But Trump has not been swayed in spite of the nation being in the grip of a pandemic.

President-elect Joe Biden called on Trump to sign the bill immediately as the midnight Saturday deadline neared for two federal programs providing unemployment aid.

“It is the day after Christmas, and millions of families don’t know if they’ll be able to make ends meet because of President Donald Trump’s refusal to sign an economic relief bill approved by Congress with an overwhelming and bipartisan majority,” Biden said in a statement. He accused Trump of an “abdication of responsibility” that has “devastating consequences.”

“I’ve been talking to people who are scared they’re going to be kicked out from their homes, during the Christmas holidays, and still might be if we don’t sign this bill,” said Rep. Debbie Dingell, a Michigan Democrat.

Lauren Bauer, a fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution, has calculated that 11 million people would lose aid from the programs immediately without additional relief; millions more would exhaust other unemployment benefits within weeks.

The man accused of killing his UPS co-worker faced a judge for the first time Thursday and is being held on a $2 million bond.

19-year-old Elijah Bertrand is charged with murder in the death of 28-year-old Nathan Burk, a UPS driver. Bertrand made a virtual appearance at court in Waterbury around noon Thursday.

Bertrand was taken into custody in Plymouth Wednesday afternoon after a search to find him.

State police responded to what they thought was a crash on Route 8 North around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in Watertown.

That’s when they found Burk assaulted with multiple stab wounds, according to police, who said he later died at a hospital.

Police found a folding style knife with blood on it at the scene, according to the police report. Bertrand's father later confirmed to officers that the knife recovered at the scene belonged to Bertrand, police said.

At a news conference on Wednesday, police said the motive for the killing was not clear.

Bertrand was eventually caught by police after using a debit card in his name at a Valero gas station in Plymouth, according to state police investigators. Plymouth police detained Bertrand at the gas station and when state police arrived, Bertrand admitted his identity to officers before saying "What took you guys so long to find me," the police report states.

Police said Bertrand confessed to stabbing Burk before taking off into the woods off Route 8.

Bertrand is due back in court on January 6.
