The United States is discussing the deployment of American military forces to Eastern Europe with its NATO allies, a senior administration official said Monday, as President Joe Biden weighs options for responding to Russian threats against Ukraine.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has placed 8,500 troops on “heightened alert” to assist with the defense of NATO allies, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said during a news briefing Monday. He said no deployment orders have been given.

"I want to reinforce that as of now, the decision has been made to put these units on higher alert and higher alert only," said Kirby. "No decisions have been made to deploy forces from the United States at this time."

With Moscow massing more than 100,000 troops at its neighbor's border and no diplomatic breakthrough in sight, the West is stepping up its response amid mounting fears an invasion could be imminent.

Conversations are underway with NATO countries that could receive U.S. military forces as part of a plan to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression, the official said.

NATO said Monday that it was sending ships and fighter jets to Eastern Europe and that Washington “has also made clear that it is considering increasing its military presence in the eastern part of the Alliance.”

Biden participated in a roughly 90-minute video conference with European leaders Monday afternoon to discuss Russia’s military buildup on Ukraine’s borders, the White House said. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Polish President Andrzej Duda, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and other leaders participated in the call.

Following the video conference, Biden told reporters it was a "very, very, very good meeting," adding that there was "total unanimity with all the European leaders." The president said he would have more to say on the issue later.

In a statement, the White House said Biden and European leaders "reiterated their continued concern about the Russian military build-up on Ukraine’s borders and expressed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity."

The White House said the leaders "underscored their shared desire for a diplomatic resolution" and also discussed "their joint efforts to deter further Russian aggression against Ukraine."

Biden was briefed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday about U.S. options for responding if Russia invades Ukraine, as well as options for U.S. military movements in advance of an invasion, according to a defense official and a senior administration official.

Among the options presented for the U.S. military in advance of an invasion were bomber flights over the region, ship visits into the Black Sea and the moving of troops and some equipment from other parts of Europe into Poland, Romania and other countries neighboring Ukraine.

Envelopes full of cash and checks were found behind a loose toilet by a plumber doing repairs at celebrity televangelist Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Texas, according to church officials.

The plumber detailed the bizarre discovery, made on Nov. 10 at the Houston megachurch, on the morning show of 100.3 The Bull, a country music radio station in the city.

“There was a loose toilet in the wall, and we removed the tile,” the caller said, NBC affiliate KPRC reported. “We went to go remove the toilet, and I moved some insulation away and about 500 envelopes fell out of the wall, and I was like ‘Oh wow!’”

The plumber then contacted the maintenance supervisor and turned the envelopes here.

It’s not clear how much money was in those envelopes.

A representative from the church acknowledged the discovery.

"Recently, while repair work was being done at Lakewood Church, an undisclosed amount of cash and checks were found. Lakewood immediately notified the Houston Police Department and is assisting them with their investigation," the representative said to KPRC.

The money mystery comes after $600,000 in checks and cash disappeared from the church’s safe in 2014, the Houston Chronicle reported. No arrests were made in the case, and the Houston Police Department's investigation remains open.

Wisconsin’s governor on Friday put 500 National Guard members on standby as the high-profile homicide trial of Kyle Rittenhouse nears its end.

Closing arguments are expected Monday in the trial.

Rittenhouse, 18, fatally shot 2 men & wounded a third during protests in Kenosha following the police shooting of Jacob Blake last year.

He is charged with intentional homicide, reckless homicide, attempted intentional homicide & other charges in the Aug. 25, 2020, shooting.

The Wisconsin National Guard will stage outside Kenosha, available should they be requested by law enforcement, Gov. Tony Evers said.

“I urge folks who are otherwise not from the area to please respect the community by reconsidering any plans to travel there and encourage those who might choose to assemble and exercise their First Amendment rights to do so safely and peacefully,” Evers said in a statement.

Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, went to Kenosha armed with a semi-automatic rifle. He has said he was there to protect businesses following unrest in the city.

He testified he fired in self-defense after he was attacked. Anthony Huber, 26, & Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, were killed in the shooting & Gaige Grosskreutz, 27, was injured.

Prosecutors argued that Rittenhouse was unjustified in using deadly force.

The prosecution said Rittenhouse, who lives in Antioch, Illinois, about 20 miles away from Kenosha, was among those who were “drawn to the chaos” in the Wisconsin city & who added to the chaos there.

The protests were in reaction to the police shooting of Blake, a Black man, by a white officer on Aug. 23, 2020. Blake was left paralyzed from the waist down.

After closing arguments, the jury will begin deliberations.

Rittenhouse faces life in prison if convicted on the first-degree intentional homicide charge, and up to 60 years on each of the other homicide-related charges. He is also charged with two reckless endangerment counts, which carry up to 12 years each & a misdemeanor weapons charge that carries a potential nine-month sentence.

Chris Brown and his baby's mother, Nia Guzman, are at odds over the amount of child support the singer is paying for their toddler daughter, Royalty.

According to TMZ, Brown had been paying $2,500 a month, until Guzman demanded that he up that amount to $15,000 a month.

12351566277?profile=original

Chris refused the demand and simply stopped paying anything. He believes Guzman is using the child as a gravy train.

Guzman's lawyer, Carl Moore, will be taking Chris to court within two weeks, asking for back child support and the pay raise, unless a settlement can be reached beforehand.

Because of the enormity of the upcoming May 2nd Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight ticket brokers are charging the most outrageous prices for premium ringside seats...ever. What's even crazier is that there are boxing fans with very deep pockets who will happily pay.

12351466099?profile=original

Tickets have not gone on sale to the public yet, but don't even bother trying to get one of these golden goodies the conventional way.

Unless you personally know Bob Arum, Leonard Ellerbe or high level executives at HBO, Showtime or The MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where the fight is being held, your only choice is to surrender to legal extortion if you want to see the fight live.

“The projections are that Kim and Kanye will likely sell almost 500,000 copies,” a magazine insider revealed.

Video And Pics After The Jump

KIEV, Ukraine (Associated Press) — Fearing that a call for a truce was a ruse, protesters tossed firebombs and advanced upon police lines Thursday in Ukraine's embattled capital. Government snipers shot back and the almost-medieval melee that ensued left at least 70 people dead and hundreds injured.

A man tries to identify a body of a victim after violence erupted in the Independence Square in Kiev on Thursday, after a brief truce in Ukraine’s capital.

Video footage on Ukrainian television showed shocking scenes Thursday of protesters being cut down by gunfire, lying on the pavement as comrades rushed to their aid. Trying to protect themselves with shields, teams of protesters carried bodies away on sheets of plastic or on planks of wood.

76763_990x742-cb1392843400.jpg

Protesters were also seen leading policemen with their hands held high around the sprawling protest camp in central Kiev. Ukraine's Interior ministry says 67 police were captured in all. It was not clear how they were taken. An opposition lawmaker said they were being held in Kiev's occupied city hall.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych

President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition protesters who demand his resignation are locked in an epic battle over the identity of Ukraine, a nation of 46 million that has divided loyalties between Russia and the West. Parts of the country — mostly in its western cities — are in open revolt against Yanukovych's central government, while many in eastern Ukraine favor strong ties with Russia, their former Soviet ruler.

TOPSHOTS

A group of protesters get scorched during clashes with police on Thursday, after a brief truce with the country’s embattled leader.

At least 99 people have died this week in the clashes in Kiev, a sharp reversal in three months of mostly peaceful protests. Now neither side appears willing to compromise, with the opposition insisting on Yanukovych's resignation and an early election and the president apparently prepared to fight until the end.

Thursday was the deadliest day yet. An AP cameraman saw snipers shooting at protesters in Kiev and video footage showed at least one sniper wearing a Ukraine riot police uniform.

12350638899?profile=original

The carnage appears to show that neither Yanukovych nor the opposition leaders appear to be in control of the chaos engulfing Ukraine.

Dr. Oleh Musiy, the top medical coordinator for the protesters told the AP that at least 70 protesters were killed Thursday and over 500 injured, and the death toll could well rise further.

An injured anti-government protester is carried away from clashes with police in Kiev on Thursday, after a brief truce between the demonstrators and the country’s embattled leader.

There was no way to immediately verify his statement. Earlier in the day, an Associated Press reporter saw 21 bodies of protesters laid out Thursday on the edge of the capital's sprawling protest camp.

In addition, one policeman was killed and 28 suffered gunshot wounds Thursday, Interior Ministry spokesman Serhiy Burlakov told the AP.

76761_990x742-cb1392843355.jpg

A truce announced late Wednesday appeared to have little credibility among hardcore protesters at Kiev's Independence Square campsite. One camp commander, Oleh Mykhnyuk, told the AP even after the truce, protesters still threw firebombs at riot police on the square. As the sun rose, police pulled back, the protesters followed them and police then began shooting at them, he said.

76754_990x742-cb1392843211.jpg

The Interior Ministry warned Kiev residents to stay indoors Thursday because of the "armed and aggressive mood of the people."

76758_990x742-cb1392843585.jpg

Yanukovych claimed Thursday that police were not armed and "all measures to stop bloodshed and confrontation are being taken." But the Interior Ministry later contradicted that, saying law enforcers would get weapons as part of an "anti-terrorist" operation.

Some signs emerged that Yanukovych is losing loyalists. The chief of Kiev's city administration, Volodymyr Makeyenko, announced Thursday he was leaving Yanukovych's Party of Regions.

"We must be guided only by the interests of the people, this is our only chance to save people's lives," he said, adding he would continue to fulfill his duties as long as he had the people's trust.

Another influential member of the ruling party, Serhiy Tyhipko, said both Yanukovych and opposition leaders had "completely lost control of the situation."

"Their inaction is leading to the strengthening of opposition and human victims," the Interfax news agency reported.

The parliament building was evacuated Thursday because of fears that protesters would storm it, and the government office and the Foreign Ministry buildings in Kiev were also evacuated. But a parliament session convened in the afternoon, with some pro-government lawmakers heeding the opposition's call to work out a solution to the crisis.

As the violence exploded and heavy smoke from burning barricades at the encampment belched into the sky, the foreign ministers of three European countries — France, Germany and Poland — met with Yanukovych for five hours after speaking with the opposition leaders. The EU ministers then returned to speak again with opposition leaders.

76764_990x742-cb1392842451.jpg

The 28-nation European Union began an emergency meeting on Ukraine in Brussels to consider sanctions against those behind the violence.

The latest bout of street violence began Tuesday when protesters attacked police lines and set fires outside parliament, accusing Yanukovych of ignoring their demands to enact constitutional reforms that would once again limit the president's power.

Prior to the deaths Thursday, the Ukrainian Health Ministry said 28 people have died and 287 have been hospitalized this week. Protesters who have set up a medical facility in a downtown cathedral so that wounded colleagues would not be snatched away by police say the number of injured are significantly higher — possibly double or triple that.

Ukraine Protest

The Caritas Ukraine aid group praised the protest medics but said many of the wounded will need long-term care, including prosthetics.

12350640064?profile=original

The clashes this week have been the most deadly since protests kicked off in November after Yanukovych shelved an association agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia. Russia then announced a $15 billion bailout for Ukraine, whose economy is in tatters.

The political jockeying for influence in Ukraine has continued. In Moscow, the Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin was sending former ombudsman Vladimir Lukin to Ukraine as a mediator.

President Barack Obama stepped in to condemn the violence, warning Wednesday "there will be consequences" for Ukraine if it keeps up. The U.S. has raised the prospect of joining with the EU to impose sanctions against Ukraine.

obama01_16773717.jpg

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Russia will "try to do our best" to fulfill its financial obligations to Ukraine, but indicated Moscow would hold back on further installments of its bailout money until the crisis is resolved.

"We need partners that are in good shape and a Ukrainian government that is legitimate and effective," he said.

At the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Ukrainian alpine skier Bogdana Matsotska, 24, said she will not take part in Friday's women's slalom due to the developments in Kiev.

"As a protest against lawless actions made toward protesters, the lack of responsibility from the side of the president and his lackey government, we refuse further performance at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games," her father and coach, Oleg Matsotskyy, wrote in a Facebook post.

Chief Keef will have to double his grind now that he has another mouth to feed. The 18-year old Chicago rapper has been positively proven to be the father of a 10-month old baby by a young woman by the name of Erica Early.

Keef's lawyer confirmed to TMZ that a DNA test shows there is 99.9% chance his client is the father. He's been ordered to pay a lump sum of $25,000 back pay, plus $2,500 a month in child support moving forward.

12350481856?profile=original

The rapper just cut a check for $11,000 last month to reduce the $20,900 sum he was behind in child support to the mother of his first child. He was ordered by a Cook County, Illinois judge on October 21 to either pay up or head back to jail.

The DEA crept up on a come up with their recent drug bust of alleged Mexican Cartel Members.

In an investigation dubbed "Operation Four Horsemen", police nabbed 23 Atlanta-based Mexican cartel members, 23.8 million in cash and 567 kilos in cocaine.

Special Agent Rodney Benson said the cartel was running drugs up and down the east coast.

He added that $8 million of the seized money will be divided among five local law enforcement agencies that gave critical support to the investigation. The agencies named were the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Department of Public Safety, the Lawrenceville Police Department, the Henry County Sheriff's Office and the Troup County Sheriff's Office.

"We are asking our local law enforcement partners to step up and help us with an international crime problem, but really on a local law enforcement budget," U.S. Attorney Sally Yates told the Atlanta Constitution Journal. "It was important that we give back some of the money that was stripped from the cartels."

The bust was the result of a 2 year investigation. 2 of the 23 people arrested were brothers that are said to be the head of the cartel along with 2 other brothers that are still at large.

550 Pound Woman Lifted Out Of Home By Crane

Daily Mail Online Reports Emergency services had to use a crane to lift an overweight woman out of her house in Germany. The woman, said to weigh 250kg, was stretchered out of her home and put into a waiting ambulance. Firefighters called in the crane to extract the woman when all over ways to get the woman out of the house failed. The crane, mounted on a lorry, lifted the stretcher out of the top window of the house in Bottrop.

She was later transported in an ambulance to hospital for treatment.
