MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The former Minneapolis police officer charged with murder in the death of George Floyd posted bail on Wednesday and was released from prison.
According to court documents, Derek Chauvin posted $1 million bond, and the Department of Corrections confirmed he was no longer in custody at the state’s facility in Oak Park Heights, where he had been detained.
Floyd, a Black man in handcuffs, died May 25 after Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck for several minutes as Floyd said he couldn’t breathe. Floyd’s death was captured in widely seen bystander video that set off protests around the world. Chauvin and three other officers were fired. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and other crimes; Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao are charged with aiding and abetting.
The other three officers previously posted bail amounts of $750,000 and have been free pending trial. Currently, all four men are scheduled to face trial together in March, but the judge is weighing a request to have them tried separately.

A New York mother was driving under the influence with her three daughters when she plowed through a home on Long Island, according to police.
Suffolk County police say they arrested 34-year-old Ashley Thomas-Smith after she allegedly lost control of her SUV Sunday afternoon on Blue Jay Drive in Brentwood. Thomas-Smith plowed through one of the homes on the street, leaving the kitchen in pieces, before crashing into another home's lawn and bringing the car with three of her kids inside to a stop.
The children, ages 4, 5 and 8, were not injured in the incident, according to police. Thomas-Smith was treated for minor injuries and she was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger 15-Years-Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law) and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, police said.
The kids were later released to the custody of their father at the hospital, according to authorities. Thomas-Smith is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 5.

A South Florida rapper and reality star has been charged and accused of pocketing coronavirus relief money to buy a Ferrari.
Diamond Blue Smith, 36, a cast member on "Love & Hip Hop: Miami" and a member of the group Pretty Ricky, was arrested Monday along with 28-year-old Tonye C. Johnson of Pennsylvania for their roles in a $24 million COVID-19 relief fraud scheme.
Smith and Johnson both face charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud.
The government alleges Smith -- also known as "Baby Blue" -- obtained money for a Ferrari by falsifying documents to get a Paycheck Protection Program loan worth nearly $427,000 dollars. He allegedly did the same for another loan worth nearly $1 million.
The FBI's investigation revealed Smith was allegedly part of a broader scheme convincing others to file for the funds while taking kickbacks. There are at least 11 other defendants.
PPP loans were meant for qualifying small businesses to receive money in emergency and forgivable loans due to impacts from the pandemic. It was part of the $2 trillion CARES Act.
Congress later found more than $1 billion dollars in relief aid was fraudulently obtained.

Two Tennessee Titans players have tested positive for COVID-19, a source told ESPN's Dan Graziano on Wednesday.
After two consecutive days with negative tests, coach Mike Vrabel had been hopeful that the Titans could return to their facility on Wednesday. Under NFL rules, that can no longer happen.
This puts Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills in jeopardy.
The two tests Wednesday bring the total of Titans players and other staff members who have returned positive coronavirus tests since Sept. 24 to 22.
The NFL announced last week that the game between the Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4 was postponed until Oct. 25.
Eight players last week, one this week and 11 overall this season -- defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson, linebacker Kamalei Correa, cornerback Kristian Fulton, wide receiver Adam Humphries, defensive lineman DaQuan Jones, long-snapper Beau Brinkley, wide receiver Cameron Batson, tight end Tommy Hudson, fullback Khari Blasingame and cornerback Greg Mabin -- have been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell warned the league's 32 teams Monday of penalties, including potential forfeits of games, for violations of COVID-19 protocols that force changes in the schedule.
The franchise has continued daily testing since the NFL told the Titans to close their facility on Sept. 29, and the league sent all 32 teams a memo Thursday with a list of new protocols for clubs to follow when dealing with an outbreak or having been exposed to an outbreak during the coronavirus pandemic.

Eddie Van Halen -- the legendary guitarist and co-founder of Van Halen -- has died after a long battle with throat cancer ... TMZ has learned.
Sources directly connected to the rock star tell us ... he died at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica Tuesday. His wife, Janie, was by his side, along with his son, Wolfgang, and Alex, Eddie's brother and drummer.
We're told in the last 72 hours Eddie's ongoing health battle went massively downhill -- doctors discovered his throat cancer had moved to his brain as well as other organs.
As you know, Eddie has been battling cancer for well over a decade. Our sources say he's been in and out of the hospital over the past year -- including last November for intestinal issues -- and recently underwent a round of chemo.
Last year we reported ... Eddie was flying between the US and Germany for 5 years to get radiation treatment. Though he was a heavy smoker for years, he believes he developed throat cancer from a metal guitar pick he used to frequently hold in his mouth more than 20 years ago.
Eddie formed the classic rock group in Pasadena in 1972 with his brother, Alex, on drums, Michael Anthony on bass and David Lee Roth singing. Eddie served as the main songwriter on their self-titled debut album in 1978 ... which launched the group into rock superstardom in the '80s.
They went on to pump out hit after hit, including "Runnin' with the Devil," "Unchained," "Hot for Teacher," "Panama" and "Jump" ... and continued their success with Sammy Hagar on lead vocals after the departure of Roth in 1985.
While the band had already achieved hard rock superstardom, Eddie became a pop culture icon with the 1983 release of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" ... which featured Eddie's iconic guitar solo.
Van Halen was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, and Eddie is widely considered one the greatest guitar players of all time.
He is survived by his wife Janie and his son, Wolfgang.
Eddie was 65.

(CNN) If you think smoking or ingesting weed helps control pain of all types, think again.
Using marijuana before entering the hospital for a surgical procedure can make your pain during recovery significantly worse, according to research presented Monday.
"There is some evidence that cannabis may be beneficial for chronic and nerve pain. However, early research suggests that this is not the case for acute pain such as for surgery of a broken leg," said lead author Dr. Ian Holmen, an anesthesiology resident at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, in a statement.
Besides an increase in acute pain, people who used weed before surgery also needed more anesthesia during surgery -- undergoing anesthesia can be risky for some people, such as the elderly or those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes -- and used more opioids during recovery.
"This study shows that it is important for patients to tell their physician anesthesiologist if they have used cannabis products prior to surgery to ensure they receive the best anesthesia and pain control possible, including the use of non-opioid alternatives," Holmen said. The research was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists on Monday.
The study compared patients undergoing surgery for a broken leg who said they had used cannabis before the operation to those who said they had not. The type and method of use of marijuana was not known; nor was how frequently the patient used weed.
Those who reported using weed received 58% more opioids per day while in the hospital, reported greater levels of pain on a scale of 1 to 10, and required an additional 12.4 milliliters of anesthesia during surgery than those who did not use pot.
During surgery, an anesthesiologist will up the dosage if they observe "involuntary body movements, increased heart rate, high blood pressure or increased rate of breathing," the study found -- all signals of greater pain levels.
The findings add to existing research, which has found patients who use weed have more surgery-related pain, which is also the case for opioid users.
"We now understand patients who chronically use opioids prior to surgery often have exaggerated pain responses and need increased pain medication after surgery because they have an increased tolerance," Holmen said.
"We speculate that cannabis use may cause a similar effect, but we need more research to determine if this.
