The UFC’s roughest fight might be in court over the next few years.

A group of former UFC fighters suing the promotion scored a key legal victory on Thursday when federal judge Richard Boulware said he would grant their lawsuit class-action status, according Kevin Draper of The New York Times.

The antitrust lawsuit dates all the way back to 2014, initially filed by Cung Le Jon Fitch and Nate Quarry against the UFC’s parent company. The lawsuit claims the UFC has abused its monopoly power in the MMA labor market, suppressing fighter wages.

While competitors remain like Bellator and the PFL, other larger competitors like Strikeforce, Pride and WEC have been bought out and absorbed by the UFC.

"This is an enormous win for all UFC fighters, past, present and future," Le said in a statement provided by the MMA Fighters Association, which backs the lawsuit. "For too long, the UFC has taken advantage of fighters by monopolizing the industry, and cheated fighters out of millions of dollars each year. Today's decision by Judge Boulware means our case can proceed for all UFC fighters that are part of the class."

The change in status will reportedly put any fighter who fought in the UFC between late 2010 and 2017, a group of about 1,200 fighters, to receive money from a legal victory or settlement unless they opt out.

The full price tag the UFC is facing if they lose in court: nearly $5 billion.

Per the Times, that number comes from how UFC fighters have historically seen less than 20 percent of the promotion’s total revenue, as opposed to the 50/50 splits seen in the NFL, NBA and NHL. A formula reportedly found the wage gap from differing revenue splits to amount to $1.6 billion, and damages are tripled in antitrust cases.

Will the UFC end up having to cut $5 billion in checks to its fighters? Probably not.

First of all, there are still plenty of obstacles for the lawsuit to even reach the trial phase. The UFC reportedly plans to appeal the granting of class action status to the lawsuit, and has also filed for a motion for summary judgement to throw out the case.

If both of those attempts to cut down the lawsuit fail, one expert told the Times the UFC will want to settle the case rather than take on a $5 billion risk with a trial. The expert said that antitrust settlements average at about 19 percent of single damages, working out to a very rough estimate of over $300 million. The UFC would also want to avoid the risk posed to its core business model, as a loss would fundamentally change how it signs fighters.

The plaintiffs are also reportedly seeking structural remedies in the UFC’s business practices, including the banning of long-term contracts.

Lil Wayne has reached a financial agreement with Universal Music Group to sell his masters. UMG has acquired them for over $100 million, according to published reports.

The 38-year old rapper, real name Dwayne Carter, has not released a statement as to why he made the decision to sell, but TMZ reported yesterday that his former manager, Ronald Sweeney, is suing him for $20 million.

Sweeney claims the Young Money Records CEO, hired him in 2005 to handle a financial dispute with Cash Money Records and it's co-CEO Birdman. After a settlement was reached Sweeney claims to have only received a fraction of what he is owed.

Artists typically want to own their masters ... especially one that has been as successful as Wayne.

The New Orleans native has sold over 120 million records during his career.

Earlier this year Kanye West tried to buy his masters back from UMG, but was unsuccessful.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Rapper Lil Wayne pleaded guilty Friday to a federal charge that he possessed a weapon despite being a convicted felon following a 2019 search of a private plane in the Miami area.

The rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, entered the plea during a hearing held remotely before U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams.

“Your honor, I plead guilty to the charge,” Carter told the judge.

Williams set a Jan. 28 sentencing date. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, but it’s likely Carter would get far less time than that. He’s free on $250,000 bail but had to surrender his passport.

Authorities said the 38-year-old rapper acknowledged possessing a .45 caliber, gold-plated handgun and six rounds of ammunition after his luggage was searched upon arriving in Miami on Dec. 23, 2019, from California. A search warrant said Carter told investigators the gun was a Father’s Day gift.

The charge stems from a weapons conviction of Carter in New York more than a decade ago, for which he was sentenced to eight months in prison. Convicted felons are barred under federal law from possessing firearms.

Carter’s lawyer, Howard Srebnick, said he considered a motion to suppress the search of the plane as a violation of the rapper’s constitutional rights. Carter, he said, wanted to accept responsibility.

“I must say I thought it was a very viable motion. He has decided not to pursue a motion to suppress,” Srebnick said.

The Miami U.S. attorney’s office also said in the news release that investigators found small amounts of cocaine, ecstasy, and oxycodone in a bag belonging to Carter, but he was not charged with any drug crime.

As Lil Wayne, Carter has sold over 120 million records, won five Grammys and numerous other music awards. He owns a home in Miami Beach and is CEO of his own record label, Young Money Entertainment.

Marvel will not recast the role of King T'Challa in the upcoming film "Black Panther 2" to honor the legacy of Chadwick Boseman, the actor who played the role before he died this August, Disney announced Thursday. Instead, the film will "explore the world of Wakanda," the fictional country in which the first film took place.

"Honoring Chadwick Boseman's legacy & portrayal of T'Challa, Marvel Studios will not recast the character, but will explore the world of Wakanda and the rich characters introduced in the first film," Disney wrote on Twitter. The company said Black Panther 2 will premiere on July 8, 2022 and will be written and directed by Ryan Coogler, who directed the first film.

Boseman died on August 30 after a four-year battle with colon cancer, which he had not publicly disclosed. He had been undergoing treatment for the cancer while filming the first "Black Panther" film. The cancer had progressed to stage four at the time of his death.

Kevin Feige, the producer of the Black Panther movies, addressed the decision during a livestream of Disney's annual investor day on Thursday.

Feige said that he wanted to "acknowledge the devastating loss of a dear friend and member of the Marvel Studios family," Deadline reported.

"Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and an inspirational individual who affected all of our lives professionally and personally," Feige added. "His portrayal of T'Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel's past."

BOSTON (CBS) — Two former Massachusetts State Police troopers were indicted on public corruption charges, the United States Attorney’s Office announced Friday. Former Lieutenant Daniel Griffin, 57, of Belmont, and former Sergeant William Robertson, 58, of Westboro, will both appear in federal court Friday afternoon.

From 2015-2018, Griffin, Robertson, and other troopers embezzled thousands of federally funded dollars for overtime by arriving late and leaving early, according to a statement from the US Attorney.

Griffin allegedly made and approved false entries on police forms and other documentation to conceal and perpetuate the fraud. In 2017 and 2018 when the overtime scandal came to light, both men and their coconspirators allegedly shredded and burned records and forms to try and cover it up.

Griffin also hid more than $700,000 in revenue from his security business from the IRS, the US Attorney said, and used on-duty hours to work on his company.

He was indicted on one count of conspiracy, one count of theft concerning a federal program, eight counts of wire fraud, and 11 counts of assisting in filing false tax returns. Some of these charges are related to a scheme to defraud a private school, the statement said.

Robertson was indicted on one count of conspiracy, one count of theft concerning a federal program, and four counts of wire fraud.

Wire fraud charges come with a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000. The charge of federal program fraud provides for a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tommy “Tiny” Lister, a former professional wrestler who was known for his bullying Deebo character in the “Friday” films, has died. He was 62.

Lister’s manager, Cindy Cowan, said he was found unconscious in his home in Marina Del Rey, California, on Thursday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cowan said Lister was diagnosed with COVID-19 earlier this year. She said the actor overcame the virus, but he became sick about a week ago and recently had trouble breathing.

The cause of death has not been released, and the coroner’s office is investigating.

“He was a gentle giant,” Cowan said. “He had a smile as broad as you could imagine. He’s going to be missed by so many. We’re all devastated.”

Lister started his career as a pro wrestler, standing 6-foot-5 with broad shoulders at about 275 pounds. His early roles included HBO football series “1st & Ten” along with movie appearances in “Beverly Hills Cop II,” which starred Eddie Murphy, and “No Holds Barred,” the 1989 film where his character Zeus challenged Hulk Hogan in a wrestling match.

The actor, who was blind in his right eye since birth, wrestled Hogan in the World Wrestling Federation in an actual match after the “No Holds Barred” film release. He also had a short stint in the World Championship Wrestling under the name Z-Gangsta.

However, Lister’s most notable role came in the 1995 film “Friday” and its sequel five years later. He portrayed the role of Deebo, a felon who was known as the neighborhood bully who terrorized his neighbors with intimidation and fear. His character was known for his infamous line “Get knocked out like your father used to.”

“RIP Tiny “Deebo” Lister,” Ice Cube said Thursday night on Instagram. “America’s favorite bully was a born entertainer who would pop into character at the drop of a hat terrifying people on and off camera. Followed by a big smile and laugh. Thank you for being a good dude at heart. I miss you already.”

Lister also appeared in “The Fifth Element,” “The Dark Knight” and “Austin Powers in Goldmember.”

“WWE is saddened to learn that Tom “Tiny” Lister, known as Zeus to the WWE Universe, passed away today,” the WWE said in a tweet.

The Compton, California, native was a track and field star who became the 1982 NCAA Division II shotput champion while he attended Cal State University Los Angeles. He briefly played football with the New Orleans Breakers of the United States Football League.

“One of the nicest bullies we’ve come across. RIP Deebo,” the San Francisco 49ers said on Twitter. Deebo Samuel, a 49ers wide receiver, got his nickname from Lister’s character.

The death was first reported by celebrity website TMZ.

Bill Cosby is reaching out from behind bars to people who have been in his corner since his April 26, 2018 conviction for raping Andrea Constand.

The 83-year old actor and comedian started "Thank You Thursday." The first person he showed gratitude to was Boosie Badazz.

"On this 10th day of December 2020...I will pay homage to those who have supported me and my family, simply by saying, thank you. The first person to be recognized on Thank You Thursday is Rapper @BOOSIEOFFICIAL," Cosby tweeted. "Thank you for your support & I’m praying for you to have a speedy recovery and for your mobility to be restored. Again, thank you very much."

Cosby was referring to Boosie's being shot in Dallas last month. The rapper was hit in the leg when someone opened fire on the vehicle he was riding in. He underwent two surgeries, and had some screws put in to make sure his foot properly heals.

Boosie was in Dallas attending a memorial for his slain friend and fellow rapper Mo3.

Cosby is currently serving a three to ten year sentence at the State Correctional Institution – Phoenix in Pennsylvania.
