Dec 2 (Reuters) - Millions of New York rats have been put on notice: the most populous city in the U.S. is hiring a director of rodent mitigation, a new position that calls for a "swashbuckling attitude" & a "general aura of badassery."

The new job, posted earlier this week, is part of the city's attempt to curb an explosion in its rodent population since the pandemic began. Rat sightings on the streets, in subways & even homes have jumped 71% over in the past 2 years.

"There’s NOTHING I hate more than rats," Mayor Eric Adams said in a tweet on Thursday in announcing the job posting. "If you have the drive, determination & killer instinct needed to fight New York City’s relentless rat population - then your dream job awaits."

Sidewalk dining outside of restaurants - first allowed in 2020 as a temporary measure to help blunt economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, has been blamed in part for the rat explosion. The city is exploring ways to allow for permanent "streeteries."

In October, New York officials announced stiffer restrictions regarding the placement of garbage bags on curbs to be picked up by sanitation workers. The trash has encouraged the explosive growth of the city's rat population.

Urban legend says there is one rat for each of New York City's 8.8 million residents. But a 2014 study showed the city likely had about 2 million rats.

The new job will pay between $120,000 & $170,000. Applicants must reside in New York City, hold a bachelor's degree & be willing to perform "Catch and Kill" functions by using hands-on techniques to exterminate rodents, the posting said.

"The ideal candidate to be highly motivated & somewhat bloodthirsty, determined to look at all solutions from various angles, including improving operational efficiency, data collection, technology innovation, trash management & wholesale slaughter," it said.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner says 33-year-old Patrick Xavier Clark has been charged with Takeoff's murder. He was arrested Thursday evening.

Takeoff, whose real name is Kirsnick Khari Ball, was killed when gunfire erupted outside of a private party at a Downtown Houston bowling alley on Nov. 1. Two others were hit by gunfire but survived.

Police believe the shooting happened after a dice game, but Takeoff was an innocent bystander.

"There was a lucrative dice game that went on at the event. There was an argument that happened afterwards outside the bowling alley, which led to the shooting," said HPD Homicide Division Sgt. Michael Burrow. "I can tell you that Takeoff was not involved in playing in the dice game, he was not involved in the argument that happened outside. He was not armed."

An autopsy showed Takeoff died from gunshot wounds to the head and torso. His manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Takeoff was part of the Grammy Award-nominated rap trio Migos with his uncle Quavo and cousin Offset from suburban Atlanta.

Kanye West’s unhinged Thursday – which ended with him getting suspended from Twitter – included an allegation that he caught his ex-wife Kim Kardashian with NBA star Chris Paul.

“Let’s break one last window before we get outa [sic] here,” West tweeted. “I caught this guy with Kim. Good night.”

Attached to the tweet was a photo of the Suns point guard.

There is no proof and no reason to believe West, who had spent the day spewing anti-Semitism as a guest on right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ InfoWars show praising Nazis and Hitler. The rapper has seemingly become more unhinged by the day, having previously been banned from the social media app for tweeting he would go “death con 5 on Jewish people.”

On Thursday night after being un-banned by new Twitter owner Elon Musk, West posted a picture of a swastika, which was the post that got him suspended again. NBA Twitter, however, was much more interested in the allegations that Chris Paul – who has been married to wife Jada Crawley since 2011 – had slept with Kardashian.

A 10-year-old Wisconsin boy has been charged as an adult with first-degree reckless homicide after he fatally shot his mother, telling police he was upset she wouldn’t let him buy a virtual reality headset on Amazon.

The shooting unfolded at 6:50 a.m. Nov. 21 in Milwaukee.

Just a day later, the boy went on to buy an Oculus Virtual Reality Headset on his dead mother's Amazon account & even asked his grandmother whether his package had arrived.

His 44-year-old mother, identified Quiana Mann, was shot at close range. The bullet entered her right eye & exited the back of her head through her skull. 

He admitted that “his mother would not allow him to have something from Amazon that he wanted to have,” it said. And he admitted that he retrieved the gun because he was mad at her for waking him up at 6 a.m. when he usually sleeps until 6:30 a.m. & admitted getting his mother’s keys to her gun lockbox the night before.

He went to the basement & took up a shooting stance, the complaint said. He said his mother walked in front of him when he tried to shoot the wall to "scare her," and he admitted that he “shot her in the face when she was approximately three feet away,” the complaint said.

He then put the gun in the living room closet & woke up his sister.

The complaint said the boy "admitted to knowing that guns are dangerous & can kill people."

His sister told police that the boy had “rage issues” all his life and “becomes very angry & acts out,” the complaint said. The boy told investigators that “he has 5 different imaginary people that talk to him.”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police have identified the woman who was brutally murdered & decapitated inside her Lawndale home Wednesday afternoon. 

The 41-year-old woman and the suspect were married and police are calling this a domestic homicide. Again, we want to warn you, the details are disturbing.

Ahmad Shareef, 34, is charged with murder & is accused of brutally killing his wife Leila Al Raheel, 41, inside their home.

Police say she was found decapitated Tuesday afternoon on the kitchen floor. A gruesome crime that has left neighbors horrified.

"Pretty much a lot of disbelief that it can happen in our neighborhood because we have a nice neighborhood," neighbor Joe Eichler said.

Shareef is now locked up behind bars after police say they tracked him down about 6 blocks from the home, hiding in the bushes & a knife was recovered from the scene.

Several adults & children live in this home & police are calling this a case of domestic violence.

In this case, police have not released a motive but neighbors say they believe there were mental health issues & say there have been ongoing problems at this home & a history of domestic issues.

The District Attorney's Office says Shareef is being held on no bail.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge declared a mistrial Wednesday at the rape trial of “That ’70s Show” actor Danny Masterson after jurors, who were leaning strongly toward acquitting him, deadlocked following the monthlong trial in which the Church of Scientology played a supporting role.

Prosecutors said Masterson raped 3 women, including a former girlfriend, in his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 & 2003 & the church dissuaded them from going public for years. Masterson, 46, pleaded not guilty & his lawyer said the acts were all consensual.

“I find the jurors hopelessly deadlocked,” Judge Charlaine Olmedo declared after the jury foreman said there was nothing the court could do to move them closer to reaching a unanimous decision. She set a March date for a retrial in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Olmedo had ordered jurors to take Thanksgiving week off & keep deliberating after they said on Nov. 18 that they could not reach a consensus. A jury of 6 women & 6 men began deliberations anew Monday after alternates replaced 2 jurors who were diagnosed with COVID-19 over the break.

Jurors voted 7 times Tuesday & Wednesday without being able to reach consensus on any of the three counts, the foreman said. Two jurors voted for conviction on the first count, & voted for conviction on the second count & 5 voted to convict on the third count.

The result was a serious setback for prosecutors & for the 3 women who said they were seeking long overdue justice & provided emotional & graphic testimony over several days.

All 3 women were members of the church at the time, and Masterson remains one.

2 of the women & the husband of 1 are suing Masterson, the Church of Scientology, its leader David Miscavige & others for allegedly stalking, harassing & intimidating them after they sought to expose Masterson.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida backup quarterback Jalen Kitna, the son of retired NFL quarterback Jon Kitna, was arrested Wednesday on 2 charges of distribution of child exploitation material & 3 charges of possession of child pornography.

Gainesville police said the 19-year-old Kitna shared the images via a social media platform. Kitna was booked in the Alachua County Jail, where he was awaiting a first appearance before a judge Thursday morning. 

The 5 charges, which still need to be formalized by the state attorney’s office, are second-degree felonies that could result in a prison term of up to 15 years and a fine of up to $10,000.

The Gators suspended Kitna indefinitely about an hour after his arrest.

Gainesville police announced the arrest in a news release and said the investigation was initiated when the department received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip indicated that a Discord user distributed an image of child sexual abuse through its chat platform.

Further investigation by a detective showed two images were shared via Kitna’s Discord account at his apartment in Gainesville, police said. A detective contacted Kitna at his residence and interviewed him. Kitna said he remembered sharing the 2 images & that his Discord account was later deactivated because of a violation of the terms of service.

Kitna’s electronic devices were seized as part of a search warrant. Preliminary analysis revealed 4 additional images of child sexual abuse.

A man among those who witnessed the shooting of Migos rapper Takeoff is facing gun possession charges, but his lawyer contends he is by no means responsible for killing the Atlanta-based musician.

Police identified Cameron Joshua, 22, as having attended the private downtown Houston party where Takeoff, whose real name is Kirsnick Khari Ball, was shot & killed early Nov. 1. Investigators believe he was among the dozens who witnessed his death outside the third-floor 810 Billiards & Bowling business.

The criminal charges against him stem from a tipster claiming that she spotted Joshua with a gun & that he racked it amid the clash that led to 28-year-old Takeoff’s death. The allegation, if true, suggests that Joshua had violated his bond conditions & possessed a weapon despite having a felony grand theft conviction out of California.

He was arrested Nov. 22 with unlawful carrying of a weapon & felon in possession of a weapon while out on bond for 2 pending, unrelated cases. 

Joshua’s defense attorney Christopher Downey attempted to quash swirling rumors, mostly fueled by social media speculation, that his client played a role in the rapper’s death. Takeoff was part of the trio behind songs such as “Bad and Boujee” with relatives Quavo and Offset.

Joshua's attorney Christopher Downey said he believes if the district attorney thought Joshua was involved with the shooting, his charges would have been different.

A man & woman were wounded in the shooting but their injuries were not life-threatening.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A woman who family members believe was the toddler kidnapped by a babysitter 51 years ago has been reunited with her family in Texas, in a meeting filled with long-overdue hugs & joyful tears.

Melissa Highsmith was 22 months old when she was abducted by a purported babysitter in 1971.  She lived in Fort Worth most of her life & is now known as Melanie Brown. They say she didn’t know she was kidnapped until her biological father, Jeffrie Highsmith, submitted DNA to 23andMe & learned that he was a match to Brown’s children.

The family said in a news release that they worked with an amateur genealogist to help interpret the DNA results & mine public records to find Melissa, who reunited with her parents & 2 of her siblings this past weekend in Fort Worth.

“It was just a mixture of joy & terrifying. Being terrified & excited & just trying to understand, you know, make sense of everything,” Melissa Highsmith told KDFW-TV. A woman who sent out a news release on behalf of the family said that at this time, Melanie Brown is planning to change her name back to Melissa.

In a statement Monday, the Fort Worth Police Department said it was “overjoyed” to hear that 23andMe led the Highsmiths to Melissa & added they will conduct official DNA testing to confirm her identity & will provide an update once those official results are in. The investigation into her kidnapping will continue.

Dwyane Wade is going after his ex-wife again over her decision to try to block their daughter's name and gender change ... this time calling Siohvaughn Funches-Wade's objection to the court petition both "libelous" & "nonsensical."

Wade spelled it all out in new court documents, saying his 15-year-old daughter, who is transgender, should be allowed to legally change her name and gender ... despite Funches-Wade's objection filed earlier this month.

Wade argues in the docs it's all in Zaya's "best interest" ... saying, "A court order affirming her identity will allow Zaya to live more comfortably & honestly in all aspects of her life -- from simple introductions & food orders, to applying for a driver's license & filling out college applications."

He added in the docs, "This petition is about allowing Zaya to take on the milestones of being a young adult with confidence and joy."

Earlier this month, Funches-Wade argued in court documents that the move should barred ... alleging, among other things, that Dwyane "may be pressuring our child to move forward with the name & gender change in order to capitalize on the financial opportunities that he has received from companies."

"Siohvaughn's allegations are libelous at their core, & are, at best, nonsensical," Wade's attorneys wrote in the docs. "Dwyane filed this Petition because Zaya asked him to."

Zaya has been going by Zaya since 2020. Wade initially filed the petition for the name & gender change in August.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Walmart employee who survived last week’s mass shooting at a store in Virginia has filed a $50 million lawsuit against the company for allegedly continuing to employ the shooter — a store supervisor — “who had known propensities for violence, threats & strange behavior.”

Donya Prioleau’s suit alleges that she has experienced post-traumatic stress disorder, including physical & emotional distress, from witnessing the rampage Nov. 22.

“Bullets whizzed by Plaintiff Donya Prioleau’s face and left side, barely missing her,” the lawsuit states. “She witnessed several of her coworkers being brutally murdered on either side of her.”

The lawsuit adds: “Ms. Prioleau looked at 1 of her coworkers in the eyes right after she had been shot in the neck. Ms. Prioleau saw the bullet wound in her coworker’s neck, the blood rushing out of it & the shocked look on her coworker’s helpless face.”

Store supervisor Andre Bing, 31, fatally shot 6 employees & wounded several others before he died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

The lawsuit alleges that Bing “had a personal vendetta against several Walmart employees & kept a ‘kill list’ of potential targets prior to the shooting.”

“Prior to the shooting, Mr. Bing repeatedly asked coworkers if they had received their active shooter training,” the suit states. “When coworkers responded that they had, Mr. Bing just smiled & walked away without saying anything.”

In another instance, Bing told co-workers “he ran over a turtle with a lawnmower just to see its (guts) spray out, which made him hungry & reminded him of ramen noodles,” the lawsuit says.

Bing was previously disciplined for bad behavior & harassing employees, but Walmart “kept employing him anyway,” the suit says.
