At this point in his career, Tyson’s fights had become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, where the ever present hype of the professional boxing scene would come face to face with the worlds of big business, Hollywood, and hip hop. Sitting ringside was controversial rapper Tupac Shakur. Shakur and Tyson were friends, a feeling of kinship linked them as each rose to stardom from poverty only to be thrown in prison. Following Tyson’s victory, Shakur and “Iron Mike” were to celebrate at an after party, but the rap star never arrived. Shakur was brutally gunned down later that night, and the scene in Las Vegas quickly turned from would-be celebratory revelry to ill fated and inopportune tragedy. Two of the best pound for pound fighters in the world have finally agreed to settle their differences in the ring. ESPN announced via their Twitter page that Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr and "Sugar" Shane Mosley will fight May 1. This has all the makings of a great bout. Shane is quick enough to give Floyd problems and packs a strong enough punch to hurt him if he makes a mistake on defense. For Floyd it's an opportunity to put the rest the tag he dodges dangerous opponents. His great defense and hand speed will pose a big problem for Shane. Both fighters are coming off of impressive wins. Floyd easily defeated Juan Manuel Marquez by unanimous decision last September. While Mosely totally destroyed Antonio Margarito last January. Knocking him out in the 9th round to claim the WBA Championship belt. The fight will be shown on HBO PPV. Expect it to do brisk sales both at the gate and home buys. Women's Boxing Expected To Debut At 2012 Olympics

Times Online Reports Eleven years after the British boxing authorities lost the argument against licensing women because they “bruised easily” and were made “unstable” by premenstrual tension, the fairer sex is on the brink of another victory in the equality fight. Olympic chiefs meeting in Berlin on Thursday are expected to admit women’s boxing to the summer Games with a debut at London 2012. It would be a landmark moment not only for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a male-dominated members’ club renowned for oldfashioned attitudes, but for the development of an increasingly popular sport among women and girls not naturally drawn to organised physical activity. Advocates say that inclusion in the Olympics, where boxing is an amateur sport, is long overdue. It is the sole male-only summer discipline, after the pole vault and 3,000-metre steeplechase featured women at the 2000 and 2008 Games respectively. Rebecca Gibson, the England women’s boxing development manager, said: “Women should be allowed to have a go at whatever they want. Being an Olympic sport would give women the same aspiration as men.” The case for women’s boxing is driven by the sport’s international federation as well as Jacques Rogge, the IOC president and a former boxing doctor. A previous effort in 2005 failed after the IOC feared a lack of qualified talent would result in dangerous mismatches. Since then, the number of countries with women at the elite level has risen to 125. In England the number of registered female boxers has jumped from 50 in 2005 to 642. There are about 670 in Britain. Among them is Hannah Behanny, 22, from London, a double European bronze medallist and 2012 hopeful. She started boxercise aged 17 after being sent to a reform centre for violent behaviour. In a storyline to mirror the film Million Dollar Baby, she finally convinced a sceptical local coach to drop his male-only policy to train her. “The guys in my gym treat me as an equal but there are still some people stuck in the old school who think it shouldn’t happen,” she said. “It’s ignorance. It’s the men that get bashed up and bloodied. Women’s boxing is more strategic. I’ve never seen a girl get knocked out.” The Olympics would bring profile and funding to women’s boxing, which is high on the national fitness agenda. The Government is backing a return of non-contact boxing training to schools. Women’s boxing first appeared in London in the 1720s and was a demonstration sport at the 1904 Olympics before being banned.The professional ranks in the UK admitted women in 1998 after losing a sex discrimination case brought by Jane Couch, who argued it was no more dangerous for women than men despite a medical expert for the British Boxing Board of Control claiming that they were “too frail”. Ms Couch retired last December, aged 40, with five world titles and is now a promoter. The British Medical Association still campaigns for a ban on all boxing, male or female, on the ground that it can cause chronic brain damage, which accumulates over a career. All amateur boxers, male or female, have to wear head and groin guards. Women have the option of wearing breast pads. Gerry Willmott, a policeman who coaches women in Haringey, said: “Most people who see women’s boxing for the first time are surprised by the technical quality. “Women don’t have preconceived ideas, so are more prepared to learn the basics. They don’t get in the ring thinking they are Ali or Mayweather.” The admission of women’s boxing to the Olympics would give heart to the female ski jumpers still barred from the winter Games. It might also encourage male synchronised swimmers, who were approved by world swimming’s governing body in 2000 but have yet to compete in an Olympics, to eschew stereotypes to make 2012 the first truly gender-neutral Games.

Jeff Lacy and Roy Jones Jr. set for duel of veteran light-heavyweight's in Mississippi

NY Daily News Reports Biloxi,Miss. - When Jeff Lacy was promoting his first boxing card in Tampa back in April, he invited Roy Jones Jr. to the show. Jones accepted the invitation, but he knew why Lacy wanted him ringside. "I knew he was going to challenge me to a fight," Jones said. "I can't say no to a challenge." The result is a 12-round light-heavyweight match between Jones and Lacy at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum tonight. Lacy, the former IBF super middleweight champion, will be fighting at 175 pounds for the first time in his career. "I actually feel my best at 172-173 pounds," said Lacy, who weighed in at 172 Thursday. "I'm stronger. I feel really good." Lacy (25-2, 17 KOs) is co-promoting the show with Jones, though he isn't handling any of the nuts and bolts. His contribution has been minimal, but Lacy plans to close the show in spectacular fashion. "This fight isn't going the distance, because I know that Roy is going to come to fight," Lacy said. "And when you come forward and stay in front of me, the fight won't go the distance." Jones and Lacy are actually in the same boat as far as their careers are concerned. They are considered washed up as far as competing at the elite level. Both suffered lopsided losses to top opponents last November. Jones lost to Joe Calzaghe, Lacy to Jermain Taylor. The winner could remain relevant in the light-heavyweight division. The loser becomes an also-ran. "My hands are still five times faster than Jeff Lacy's," Jones said. "And they're five times faster than everybody else on this card." Lacy, 32, has just two losses in his career, but they have been devastating. He took a brutal beating at the hands of Calzaghe in 2006, which may have damaged his career beyond repair. He has not logged a single KO in the five fights since that loss. Part of that may have come from the fact that he had to have reconstructive surgery on his shoulder and missed a year in the ring. Lacy said that was not his problem against Taylor, his 2000 U.S. Olympic teammate. "We were roommates in the Olympics," Lacy said. "I attended his wedding. The aggressive side of me didn't come out in the fight. I didn't feel like I was taking that many shots and I felt like I was landing a lot of my shots. But I lost the decision." Lacy doesn't expect to have any motivational problems once he steps into the ring against Jones (53-5, 39 KOs). He has built-in motivation because he realizes that his career is on the line. "When you're building up your career you're put in against guys who aren't that good and you know you can just go in and take care of them quickly," Lacy said. "But when you're fighting someone like Roy Jones you know he's coming to fight. ... I've been up for this fight from the day he said yes."

NYDailyNews Reports Boxing star Arturo Gatti wasn't murdered - he killed himself in a Brazil seaside resort three weeks ago, authorities said Thursday. The rough-and-tumble fighter's wife was released from jail after the ruling that Gatti, 37, committed suicide, the Associated Press reported. Former exotic dancer Amanda Rodrigues, who discovered the body on July 11, was arrested after police theorized she had strangled the former world champion with her purse strap. Police suggested Gatti was too drunk to defend himself when he was killed. But Brazilian state court Judge Ildete Verissimo de Lima in the city of Recife ordered Rodrigues' immediate release after the new finding. The 23-year-old was on a second honeymoon with Gatti and their 10-month-old baby when he was found dead inside their hotel room in Porto de Galinhas. Gatti, born in Montreal, trained in Jersey City, N.J., and found stardom on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. He captured his first title in 1995, by defeating junior welterweight champion Tracy Harris Patterson. Gatti's career also included a trio of brutally memorable battles against Micky Ward, along with fights against Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Merriweather.

Former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti found dead in Brazil

CBC Reports Former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti, who was raised in Montreal, has been found dead in northeastern Brazil. On a second honeymoon with his wife and 10-month-old baby, Gatti's blood-stained body was found in an apartment in Porto de Galinhas, Brazilian police say. A police investigation is underway, but few details are being released. Foul play is suspected in the death. Gatti's body was found at around 6 a.m. Saturday morning. He was found in his underwear, with blood stains on his neck and the back of his head. Nicknamed "Thunder," Gatti was one of the most successful Canadian boxers in history. Beginning his professional career in 1991 at age 19, he scored a third-round knockout in his first bout. Three years later he captured the United States Boxing Association junior lightweight title and successfully defended it twice. He earned the International Boxing Federation's world junior lightweight title the following year. Born in Italy but raised in Montreal, the 37-year-old Gatti retired two years ago.
