Radio legend Troi Torain (STAR) always delivers hard-hitting objective truth. As a culture critic he is vicious, as a businessman he is relentless, as a luminary he is un-matched.

Considered a radio pioneer by many, STAR has set precedents on the urban landscape and was recently inducted into News One's "Top 20 Black Radio Jockeys Of All Time."

STAR & BUC WILD made the national stage on MTV (1999) but it was their radio show on New York's Hot 97 and Power 105 (2000 - 2006) that secured their place in Hip-Hop history.

Torain's resume includes The Source magazine, MTV Networks, Hot 97, Power 104.1, Power 105.1, Pulse 87, Hip-Hop Weekly magazine, Vladtv, Thisis50, 100.3 The Beat, shot97.com and VH1 (The Gossip Game).

This clip is from STAR's LIVE show (12noon -- 2pm) on http://shot97.com.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jay Z announced Friday he'll move forward with a planned collaboration with Barneys New York despite recent allegations of racial profiling at the luxury store, an ongoing investigation into the claims and public pressure that he back out of the deal.

In a statement on his website, Jay Z said he'd agreed to move forward with next week's launch of his BNY SCC collection under the condition that he helps lead the store's review of its policies.

"The easy position would have been to walk away and leave policymaking to others hoping that someone addresses the problem," said Jay Z. "I will take this into my own hands with full power to recommend, review and revise policies and guidelines moving forward. I am choosing to take this head on."

12350447860?profile=original

He said 100 percent of sales from the collection of clothes, accessories and jewelry will go toward his charitable foundation, which supports educational opportunities for disadvantaged students, and an additional 10 percent of all Barneys' sales during Wednesday's launch day will also be donated.

Barneys New York said in a statement that it guaranteed raising a minimum of $1 million Wednesday to be donated to the foundation.

"Barneys New York has zero tolerance for any form of discrimination," the statement said. "As we have stated all along, if we learn any procedures or practices are not consistent with our zero-tolerance policy, we will immediately take corrective action including terminating those employees responsible."

Last month, two black customers separately accused the luxury store of racial profiling after they said they lawfully purchased expensive items but were detained by police on suspicion of credit card fraud.

Trayon Christian sued Barneys, saying he was accused of fraud after using his debit card to buy a $349 Ferragamo belt in April. Kayla Philips filed a notice of claim saying she would sue after she was stopped by detectives outside the store when she bought a $2,500 Celine handbag in February.

12350448297?profile=original

Rob Brown, an actor who appears on the HBO series "Treme," also filed a lawsuit in October against Macy's, alleging he'd been similarly detained and questioned after he was stopped for possible credit card fraud while shopping at the department store. Brown is black.

12350448499?profile=original

Macy's has said none of its employees were involved in Brown's detention and questioning. On Friday, Barneys said its own investigation has determined none of its employees were involved in stopping Christian or Philips.

An investigation by the state attorney general's office is "ongoing and active," a spokeswoman said Friday.

New York Police Department Commissioner Raymond Kelly has said it is standard practice for retailers to call police if they believe crimes have been committed. The NYPD didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment Friday.

Jay Z's decision to not immediately bow out of his Barneys collaboration when the racial profiling allegations surfaced drew a firestorm of criticism on Twitter and an online petition that urged the rap mogul to bow out.

12350448883?profile=original

Jay Z's statement regarding continuing his collection with Barneys via his website.

In the past several weeks two separate investigations were launched as a result of the wrongful detention of Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips. My team has been privy to the status of the Barneys third party consultant investigation. In continuing our research, we also contacted the New York State Attorney General’s office for the status of their investigation into both Barneys and Macy’s. Those findings are not yet available.

While I await the findings of the Attorney General’s Office, I have agreed to move forward with the launch of BNY SCC collection under the condition that I have a leadership role and seat on a council specifically convened to deal with the issue of racial profiling. I am in a unique position to use my voice to affect change to this disturbing issue. The easy position would have been to walk away and leave policy making to others hoping that someone addresses the problem. I will not leave the outcome to others. I will take this into my own hands with full power to recommend, review and revise policies and guidelines moving forward. I am choosing to take this head on.

As I previously stated, the collaboration with Barneys has always been about giving and The Shawn Carter Foundation. From this collection, the Foundation will receive not only 25% of sales, it will now receive the additional 75% of Barneys’ sales, totalling 100% of all sales from BNY SCC. Along with 100% of sales from the collaboration, the Foundation will receive an additional 10% of all retail sales from Barneys New York stores nationwide and Barneys.com on November 20th.  - Shawn “JAY Z” Carter

Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony Tiffith and Kendrick Lamar decided to cancel the rapper's performance at GQ's Men of the Year party because they felt disrespected by the recent interview the publication ran.

K. Dot was due to make an appearance at the event on Tuesday, but pulled out at the last minute.

In the article writer Steve Marsh mentions that Kendrick doesn't drink or smoke and his family's alleged gang ties. Marsh also refers to Tiffith as "TDE's Suge Knight."

"Much of Kendrick's music now is an attempt to transcend his ravaged world without separating himself from it in judgment, about somehow gaining control over his household's chaos—some of his uncles were Crips, and his father was reportedly a Gangster Disciple in Chicago before moving to Compton—and over his neighborhood's warped commitment to adolescent pride. It's an ethos that extends to his crew. They have a seriousness of purpose, a rigorous discipline that can feel slightly monastic at times. Kendrick doesn't smoke weed or drink booze. In the time I spent with him, I never witnessed anyone roll even the thinnest spider leg of a jay, nor did I see Kendrick so much as glance at the many, many girls around him."

12350453690?profile=original

Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith

Tiffith told TMZ that GQ's article was primarily negative and offensive.

"To say he was 'surprised at our discipline' is completely disrespectful. Kendrick deserved to be accurately documented," Tiffith said. "The racial overtones immediately reminded everyone of a time in hip-hop that was destroyed by violence, resulting in the loss of two of our biggest stars [Tupac and B.I.G.] ... As a result of this misrepresentation, I pulled Kendrick from his performance at GQ's annual Man Of The Year party. While we think it's a tremendous honor to be named as one of the Men Of The Year, these lazy comparisons and offensive suggestions are something we won't tolerate."

Jim Nelson

GQ editor-in-chief Jim Nelson has issued a statement in response to the controversy.

"Kendrick Lamar is one of the most talented new musicians to arrive on the scene in years. That's the reason we chose to celebrate him, wrote an incredibly positive article declaring him the next King of Rap, and gave him our highest honor: putting him on the cover of our Men of the Year issue. I'm not sure how you can spin that into a bad thing, and I encourage anyone interested to read the story and see for themselves. We were mystified and sorely disappointed by Top Dawg's decision to pull him at the last minute from the performance he had promised to give. The real shame is that people were deprived of the joy of seeing Kendrick perform live. I'm still a huge fan."—Jim Nelson,
GQ editor-in-chief

Video After The Jump

We have to give credit to Complex for recognizing what many fans already know. Lloyd Banks is one of the best emcees in the game. His complex wordplay and delivery doesn't get the recognition it deserves by the mainstream media, but that doesn't change that fact that Banks can rap circles around a lot of the rappers who are in regular rotation on the radio.

With three albums under his belt and countless classic mixtapes, that are quite simply better than most artists CD's, the PLK continues to shine bright amongst his peers.

12348837287?profile=original

Check out what Complex had to says about Banks and his latest mixtape, F.N.O. (Failures No Option)

His latest tape, the DJ Drama-hosted F.N.O., is one of the year's best tapes. The production, helmed primarily by Doe Pesci, has a gritty melodicism that perfectly complements Banks' tightly written bars. Those lyrics unfurl with effortless motion, as if the words were simply spilling over from inside of him, each verse billowing into perfectly formed shapes.

Banks doesn't do much press, so it's unlikely we'll figure out all of the mysteries he's speaking on. But there's a density to his ideas that should leave listeners pondering the source of the hard-won wisdom he drops throughout. For a rapper who no doubt does alright for himself, performing overseas and banking off of his older music, it's refreshing to discover that he still feels that he has something to say this late in his career.

Other underrated artists to make the list include Boldy James, Denzel Curry, Dizzy Wright, Dom Kennedy, Lil Durk, Lil Herb, Sage The Gemini, Starlito, Vic Mensa, Vince Staples and Young Thug.
