(CNN) -- A white supremacist was killed in a shootout with deputies in Templeton, California, according to a San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Office news release Friday.
The shooting took place Thursday morning when deputies at first tried to conduct a traffic stop on Christopher Michael Straub, 38, near a cemetery. Straub got out of his vehicle and ran through the vineyards of the cemetery, the release said.
He then hid and ambushed deputies, firing multiple rounds at them with a handgun. Deputy Richard "Ted" Lehnhoff, 34, was hit in the leg and airlifted to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition, the release said.
Straub continued evading deputies and attempted to return to his vehicle through the vineyard, but additional deputies arrived on scene and intercepted him as he tried to regain access to his vehicle.
Straub was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.
After the shooting, authorities found multiple weapons in Straub's vehicle, including four assault-style rifles, one bolt-action hunting rifle, one shotgun, and two handguns along with the handgun he used to shoot at deputies, plus hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
Authorities searched Straub's residence, where they discovered he was illegally manufacturing weapons parts.
"Straub was a wanted felon and it is illegal for felons to possess any weapons," the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office said Straub was a known member of a white supremacist gang and the Sheriff's Gang Task Force was already conducting an investigation before Thursday's shooting.
Straub "had a significant criminal history having been booked 28 times into jails all across California including two incarcerations in state prison," the sheriff's office said in the release.

Conor McGregor said Friday afternoon on Twitter that he is "boxing Manny Pacquiao next in the Middle East."
According to McGregor's manager, Audie Attar, who also represents Pacquaio, McGregor is in serious talks to fight the boxing legend, although the fight isn't a done deal.
The McGregor-Pacquiao match would take place in late December or early January, Attar said. The Middle East is one of a few locations being discussed to host the fight, he added.
Attar recently told ESPN he had talks with the UFC about McGregor's future. On Friday, he said McGregor fighting Pacquiao in a boxing match was, in fact, one of the topics discussed; according to Attar, the UFC was on board with the idea.
In 2017, the UFC co-promoted a McGregor boxing match versus Floyd Mayweather Jr. along with Mayweather Promotions, Showtime and McGregor Sports & Entertainment. That fight fight ended up being one of the highest-grossing combat sports events of all time.
A specific weight for this proposed bout hasn't been determined, per Attar, but he said he was confident the fight would take place in the coming months.
Following the Pacquiao fight, Attar said the plan was for McGregor to return to the UFC in 2021.
McGregor, who also expressed frustration with his lack of activity this year, hasn't fought since his 40-second TKO win over Donald Cerrone in January.

Megan Thee Stallion's got more beef with Tory Lanez ... her camp is accusing him of launching a smear campaign against her as retaliation for her accusing him of shooting her.
Megan's team alleges Tory's camp is creating fake emails in an effort to plant false stories about MTS in the media. Her attorney, Alex Spiro, tells TMZ ... "We have been made aware of manipulated text messages and invented email accounts that have been disseminated to the media in a calculated attempt to peddle a false narrative about the events that occurred on July the 12th."
TMZ has received some of the allegedly doctored texts and emails to which Spiro is referring.
For instance, Megan's camp claims Tory's reps sent one to several media outlets posing as a promoter at LIV Nightclub in Miami. The email falsely claims her management at Roc Nation influenced the plaintiff in a lawsuit filed against Lanez, claiming the rapper went on a menacing attack in the club.
Roc Nation denies any involvement in that lawsuit.
Another email, from a phony Gmail account, pointed the media to a YouTube video of a man claiming to be Tory's ex-bodyguard, who said he'd never seen the rapper get violent with women. However, he also admitted he had no clue what happened with Megan, because he wasn't there the night of the shooting.
As you know ... Megan is adamant Tory pulled the trigger and shot her during the wee hours of July 12 after a night of partying in the Hollywood Hills.
Tory had been silent about the incident until he released new music last night. In the lyrics, he accuses her team of "framing" him for the shooting, and also questions whether Megan was even shot at all.
A rep for Tory says they "strongly deny sending emails or otherwise creating a false narrative. The only commentary which has been made on this topic was the creative output on the album. We are investigating who could be sending these false emails and intend to take action against them.”
As for the shooting investigation ... our sources say police have the bullet that was taken from Megan's foot -- and you'll recall, she posted pretty gruesome pics of her injuries.

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — A 17-year-old in Illinois accused of killing two protesters days after Jacob Blake was shot by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Friday fought his return to Wisconsin to face homicide charges that could put him in prison for life.
Kyle Rittenhouse surrendered to police in his home in Antioch, Illinois, a day after prosecutors say he shot and killed two protesters and wounded a third on the streets of Kenosha on Aug. 25. His attorneys have said Rittenhouse acted in self-defense and have portrayed him as a courageous patriot who was exercising his right to bear arms during unrest over the police shooting of Blake, who is Black.
Rittenhouse attorney John Pierce said during a hearing Friday that he intends to fight extradition. Judge Paul Novak gave the defense 14 days to review papers and file pleadings ahead of an Oct. 9 hearing.
Pierce asked for a month to prepare arguments challenging extradition that he said involve “issues of some complexity, frankly that have not arisen in the country for some time.”
“We intend to challenge extradition by writ of habeas corpus,” Pierce said.
He didn’t provide further details at the hearing about the basis for the challenge. The delay in returning Rittenhouse to Wisconsin is the second in the case.
Mike Nerheim, the Lake County state’s attorney, said after the hearing that Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker had signed a warrant to return Rittenhouse to Wisconsin after a request was made by Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a fellow Democrat. Rittenhouse’s attorney asked for a chance to review the warrant, which Nerheim said he had received Friday morning.
Nerheim said he didn’t know on what basis Rittenhouse would challenge extradition.

The hero father who took a bullet to protect his 3 kids during a frightening shooting at a car dealership is on the mend ... but he's now out of 2 jobs and his kids are still in shock.
Anthony Jefferson's wife, Danica Jefferson, tells TMZ ... Anthony is currently unable to walk after taking a bullet to the right thigh earlier this week when a gunman started shooting inside a Bronx car dealership.
Danica tells us that due to his inability to walk right now ... Anthony was fired from his 2 jobs as head painter at a maintenance company and as a construction worker in NYC. She was not comfortable naming the companies.
Anthony's been discharged from the hospital, but still has the bullet lodged in his leg, and Danica says he'll need another surgery in the near future. And, then there's the trauma on their children.
As you know ... Anthony shielded his 6, 5 and 2-year-old when the gunfire erupted. Mom says they're reluctant to go outside, crying in their sleep and the youngest asks, "Why did the man shoot my daddy?"
They're hoping to get the kids in to see a therapist as soon as possible.
A friend of Danica and Anthony's set up a GoFundMe page and says the money will go toward Anthony's mounting medical bills and therapy for the little ones. For now, Danica's just extremely thankful for her husband's bravery in protecting their kids at all costs.

Tory Lanez finally broke his silence about allegedly shooting Megan Thee Stallion, but only in song -- he dropped a new record that includes a full denial.
The rapper released a 17-track album Thursday night called "DayStar," and nearly every song seems to be about the altercation with Megan back in July when they were out partying with Kylie Jenner in the Hollywood Hills.
Megan has accused him of shooting her, but Tory's basically calling her a liar on his opening track, "Money Over Fallouts." The lyrics include, "How the fuck you get shot in your foot, don’t hit no bones or tendons?"
He continues ... "How the fuck your team is trying to pay me in some whole millions? / I just lost like 10 million dollars because this cold business/ But I got like 10 million followers that’s gon' roll with me / Fans that support me because they know my heart."
Along with poking holes in Megan's account of what went down between them on July 12, he suggests she's been influenced to lie about him. On other tracks, he hints that he hopes to speak with Megan again and even reconcile ... but also that he's moved on with a new GF.
Tory's new album also addresses rumors Kylie was the reason he and Meg were fighting that night -- a theory Megan's firmly denied. Still, Tory raps, "Me and Kylie still off in the pool / We was chilling, kicking s**t was cool / Both of us didn’t know you was tripping / Even though I got a crush on Kylie, I woulda left with you if I knew you was dipping, for the simple reason / You invited me, but I can’t act like shawty didn’t excite me."
