Wale's sophomore LP, Ambition, debuted at #2 on the albums chart in November, and the title couldn't have been more appropriate.

The Washington D.C. rapper reinvented himself in 2011, claiming a new space in the hip-hop stratosphere after a sound, but commercially disappointing, debut two years earlier. Wale's tireless work ethic, along with a deal from Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group, were the keys to his success and his #10 slot on MTV News' Hottest MCs in the Game VII list.

After releasing Attention Deficit in 2009, Wale parted ways with Interscope Records and decided to continue on his mixtape grind. In August 2010, he dropped More About Nothing, the second installation of his "Seinfeld"-themed series. And if Wale was putting out feelers for his fanbase, it worked. The mixtape became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, and pulled in 100,000 downloads in a matter of hours. Fans weren't the only ones paying attention though. Rick Ross, in the midst of constructing his MM Group empire, also took notice.

By February 2011, Wale was officially signed to MMG under the Warner Bros. umbrella. With the release of Maybach Music's Self Made Vol. 1 compilation last summer, Wale demonstrated his ability to deliver bangers on hits like "600 Benz," and from there his star only continued to rise.

"Wale really touched on a broad scale, when it comes to an audience, it's hard to dispute that," said Yomi Desalu, MTV's senior director of music and talent programming strategy.

The criteria to be considered a Hottest MC are based on a combination of impact, buzz, sales, lyrics, swag and the intangibles. Mr. Folarin pretty much touched on them all. He performed with the Maybach crew on shows like "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" finally getting his mainstream shine. With the right support system behind him, Wale began to prep his sophomore album, but he teased it with another excellent mixtape, The Eleven One Theory, in August 2011. In addition to proving that he was still a very talented lyricist, singles like "Bait" reinforced the fact that he'd finally found a sound that would appeal to a wider audience.

By the time November 1 rolled around, Wale had built plenty of anticipation for his second album. Thanks in part to Rick Ross — who demonstrated his uncanny talent for branding in 2011 — #Ambition took on a life of its own in the world of social media, with its inspirational undertones. Lead single "Lotus Flower Bomb," plus the Kid Cudi-assisted "Focused", "Slight Work" (featuring Big Sean) and, of course, the title track "Ambition" (featuring Meek Mill and Ross) struck just the right balance between Wale's sometimes-dense rhymes and radio-friendly numbers.

"Lotus Flower Bomb is a #1 record and Wale's album was very balanced and diverse," MTV Jams' Tuma Basa noted. In the post-release madness, Wale appeared alongside Rick Ross on the cover of Billboard, dropped verses on the Bawse's Rich Forever mixtape and even recruited Chris Brown to direct the visuals for "Slight Work." After shaking off the disappointment of his debut album and surviving the dreaded sophomore slump, things are only looking up for Wale.

Album sales aren't the only measure of a hot MC. Meek Mill doesn't have a solo LP on the shelf, but the Philadelphia flame spitter has made his presence felt in a variety of other ways.

Thanks to "Ima Boss," his inescapable single with Maybach Music CEO Rick Ross, Meek has maintained a deafening buzz on the streets and impacted the game like no other MC in his class. Meek Milly meets all of the criteria to be considered one of the "Hottest MCs in the Game." His in-your-face lyrical delivery and fresh-off-the-block style have all helped earn him the #7 spot on the "VII" edition of the list.

Meek started off his year right, landing a spot on XXL's 2011 Freshman cover before most rap fans could even pick him out of a lineup. But those unfamiliar with Milly quickly learned who he was when Ross signed him to Maybach Music Group. And then his single "Ima Boss" began to catch fire in the streets. From the song's opening bars, Meek separated himself from other rap rookies by putting his gangsta on full display, daring his adversaries to come for him ("They say they gon' rob me, see me never do sh*t").

"For me, Meek is that real, real street music," MTV News editor/writer Rebecca Thomas said. "As much as I'm a Drake fan, a [Big] Sean fan, all those people, I just think there are days you wake up and you need to hear 'Ima Boss.' If you didn't feel 'Tupac Back,' if you didn't feel 'Ima Boss' all last year, you're dead."

It wasn't just the fans that felt Meek either. Everyone from Fabolous to Jim Jones repurposed the "Ima Boss" beat for their own freestyle needs. The omnipresent single peaked at #17 on the Billboard Rap chart, but its run in the streets and the clubs made it seem so much bigger. Mill didn't ride just the one single, though: On "Tupac Back," he resurrected the spirit of the fallen rap legend, and with "House Party," from his Dreamchasers mixtape, Meek has created quite the track record.

Last year alone, Meek signed a deal with Ecko Clothing to launch his own Dreamchasers line, was named one of MTV Jams' Fab 5 artists, won MTV2's Sucker Free's Who Got Next award and snagged a #1 rap album with his appearance on MMG's Self Made, Vol.1 compilation.

"You need dudes like Meek to hit the reset button every now and then on the game just to let them know like, 'Yo, this comes from the streets,' " said Rahman Dukes, MTV News' director of hip-hop news. "He's just as responsible for building that MMG Empire as Ross is."

French Montana hit up the Hot 97 show today to chop it up with Angie Martinez. He talked about the upcoming NY Giants "Shot Caller" remix, turning down a deal with G.O.O.D Music to sign with Bad Boy, meeting Rihanna and his appearance on the record "Stay Schemin" that took the Drake vs. Common beef up a notch.

Angie asked French about Drake's verse on "Stay Schemin" getting at Common and the Chicago rapper's immediate reply.

"With them you gotta look at it like it's hip hop, it's competition, it's good for the music," French said. "I think Drake wanna fight. He said he can't wait to run into him."

"I heard you say you aint a b*tch 'cause you sing/You a b*tch 'cause you cling like a b*tch that's 18" - Common "Stay Schemin" remix

As we previously reported, Drake and Common are beefing and it looks like Com is not even playing around as he fires off on Drake on the remix to "Stay Schemin." It's a direct reply to Drizzy's verse on the song.

“I just ask that when you see me, you speak up n*gga that’s all/Don’t be ducking like you never wanted nothing,” Drake raps on the track. “It’s feeling like rap changed, it was a time it was rugged/Back when if a n*gga reached it was for the weapon, nowadays n*ggas reach just to sell their record.

There was immediate speculation that the verse was directed at Common, who previously dissed Drake on the song "Sweet"

He [Drake] opened his mouth and said some things, so if that’s what he want, all that subliminal [talk]…you could do that too, but say it now,” Common told Sway of MTV News and Shade 45's "Sway in the Morning" back in December when asked if "Sweet" was directed at Drake. “The verse is about me but when you hear some of the stuff on the chorus it’s like you can’t help but think about dude and I guess that’s what he felt. So at the end of day he fits in that category, he already embraced it, so wear it.”

The battle is in full swing now. Check out Common's new diss below.
