Video After The Jump

SANTA FE, Texas (Reuters) - Texas officials charged a 17-year-old student with murder in the shooting of 10 people, including fellow pupils, at his high school on Friday in an attack similar to the massacre at a Florida high school earlier this year.

Students said a gunman, identified by law enforcement as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, opened fire in a classroom at Santa Fe High School shortly before 8 a.m. CT (1300 GMT) on Friday, and that they fled in panic after seeing classmates wounded and a fire alarm triggered a full evacuation. Ten people were hurt in the attack, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said.

It was the latest in a long series of deadly shootings at U.S. schools. Seventeen teens and educators were shot dead at a Parkland, Florida, high school in February, a massacre that stirred the nation’s long-running debate over gun ownership.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office identified Pagourtzis and said he had been charged with capital murder in a post on its Facebook page. More charges could follow.

Speaking to reporters before the teen was identified, Abbott told reporters that the suspect had used a shotgun and a .38 revolver taken from his father in the fourth-deadliest mass shooting at a U.S. public school.

“Not only did he want to commit the shooting, but he wanted to commit suicide after the shooting,” Abbott said, citing a police review of the suspect’s journals. “He didn’t have the courage to commit suicide.”

Two other people are in custody, Abbott said.

Investigators are talking to the suspect, Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said.

Abbott said that investigators had seen a T-shirt on the suspect’s Facebook page that read “Born to Kill.”

Explosive devices had also been found at the school, located about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Houston, and off campus, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted.

Police were searching two homes and a vehicle linked to the suspect, where they have found multiple homemade explosive devices, Abbott said.

‘THE GUY BEHIND ME WAS DEAD’

Courtney Marshall, a 15-year-old freshman at the school, said the gunman came into her art class shooting.

“I wanted to take care of my friends, but I knew I had to get out of there,” Marshall said, saying that she saw at least one person hit. “I knew the guy behind me was dead.”

Orlando Gonzalez said that his 16-year-old son Keaton, fled the attack, but one of his friends was shot and wounded.

“I was really worried, I didn’t know what was going on ... I almost couldn’t drive,” Gonzalez said. “I just imagine what he’s going through ... He’s still scared.”

The school has some 1,462 students, according to federal education data.

U.S. President Donald Trump called the latest school massacre “absolutely horrific.”

“My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others,” Trump said at the White House.

Days after the Parkland shooting, Trump said that elected officials should be ready to “fight” the powerful National Rifle Association lobby group. Early this month he embraced that group, telling its annual meeting in Dallas “your Second Amendment rights are under siege.”

The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects the right to bear arms.

No major federal gun controls have been imposed since Parkland, though the administration is pursuing a proposed regulatory ban on “bump stocks,” which enable a semi-automatic rifle to fire a steady stream of bullets. The devices were used in an October 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 59 people but have not played a role in other major U.S. mass shootings.

FAST FACTS:
*Approximately 90 students at Frayser High School are pregnant or have recently given birth

*The startling numbers fall in line with high teen pregnancy rates in the entire Frayser community

*A new initiative to help combat the problem will soon be introduced

About 90 students at a Memphis High School are either pregnant, or have been recently.

The startling news was confirmed by a high ranking city official and comes as the community plans to roll out a new initiative to help combat the problem.

However, one Frayser High School graduate says teen pregnancy is not a new problem for the school.

"When we would come back from summer break, there would be a thousand people pregnant. We were like, what's going on?" joked Alicia Williamson, who graduated from Frayser in 2004.

"There were a whole lot of bellies. You had to watch out so you didn't bump into them. Being 2011, I thought a lot of them would have thought this is not the right way to go, having babies during school time," she added.

The organization, Girls, Inc. teaches girls about preventing pregnancy.

Deborah Hester Harrison, who heads the organization, says Memphis' teen pregnancy rate stands at between 15 and 20 percent, almost twice the national average.

In the Frayser zip code, the rate is about 26 percent. Harrison partly blames the media.

"So much of our society is sexually oriented. As adults we can look at that and it doesn't impact us, but kids are different," Harrison said.

It's why Girls, Inc. offers classes where teenage girls "care for" computerized babies to give them a feel for what teenage parenthood is like.

The organization will also be part of a new initiative tentatively scheduled to be introduced next week.

A Florida high school basketball player made a mistake he’ll be regretting for a while.

Mason Holland of Desoto High School went ham and body slammed a referee after being ejected from a game for a scuffle with a player from Port Charlotte.

The 6'5 senior has been suspended and could face criminal charges, pending an investigation by the state Attorney’s office.

Port Charlotte won the game by default after the refs refused to continue following the incident.

Compelling video has been released of a hostage situation gone terribly wrong in Panama City, Florida.

56-year old Clay Duke interrupted a school board meeting yesterday, by first painting a large, red ”V" on the wall. He then pulled out a handgun, telling all the women they could leave, and the male board members to stay.

Everybody in this room, except the a**holes behind that counter, hit the road. The women can leave, you six men stay,” he said.

Duke then started rambling about the school board firing his wife and how their benefits had run out. He declared that he was either going to die or be sent to prison for a long time.

School board member Ginger Littleton had left the room as instructed by the gunman. But in an incredible act of bravery, she returned and attempted to disarm Duke when he turned his back. She snuck up behind him and hit the arm holding the gun with her purse.

It didn’t work, Duke simply knocked her to the ground, calling her a “stupid b*tch.

“Quite frankly, at that point in the back of my mind, I thought . ‘You know, you’re probably right,” Littleton said later.

Littleton later told the Panama City News Herald she felt compelled to do something.

“To me it was either go for it now or live with the consequences, and I couldn’t live with the consequences,” she said. “He pointed the gun directly at my head and he didn’t choose to do that to me. I’m sure when I wake up tomorrow I’ll be a sadder, but wiser person.”

Duke spent several minutes talking to Superintendent Bill Husfelt, who swore that he didn’t remember his wife.

Husfelt asked that the other board members be let go, since he was the one who probably made the decision to fire his wife. Duke then raised his gun as Husfelt pleaded for his life, and started firing wildly.

By some miracle, he didn’t hit anyone.

A security guard wounded Duke, who then took his own life.

Video After The Jump A 28-year-old man who was recently released from prison was charged Saturday night in what police described as a bloody melee that left one dead and seven others wounded at a high school reunion in Cherry Hill earlier the same day. James L. Dixon of 900 Kevin Road was charged with fatally stabbing Carrington McNutt and injuring at least seven others at a Walbrook High School reunion for classes 1995 through 2005 at the Patapsco Arena on Annapolis Road, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman. "One individual basically went on a stabbing rampage," he said. Dixon is charged with first-degree murder, as well as several counts of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Saturday afternoon, friends and relatives streamed in and out of McNutt's rowhouse in the 2800 block of W. Lafayette Ave. The house was his childhood home, where he lived with his mother and sister. "Everybody from this neighborhood knew each other," said Carrington's sister, Chandra McNutt. She said lots of people from all over town were attending the reunion, although she did not attend. "I'm still in shock," she said from inside the door. She said her brother left behind a young daughter. Police say it is unclear at this point what caused the dispute. McNutt was stabbed in the neck and upper torso, Moses said. He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m., about an hour after the fight. The other victims were taken to various area hospitals and are expected to survive, Moses said. Wesley Souders, a manager at the arena who was working during the event, said the contract was for about 600 people to attend the dance, which was supposed to end at 2 a.m. "They were playing their music. They were dancing. They seemed to be having a good time," he said. About 25 security guards were manning the event, Souders said, and police are routinely notified ahead of time when the space is rented out. Police had stopped in and reported that "everything is fine," Souders said, but the fight broke out shortly after. "We couldn't see exactly where it started," he said. The parking lot behind the Patapsco Arena was packed with people attending a flea market Saturday afternoon while workers wearing white plastic jumpsuits cleaned inside the event hall. Some blood drops remained near the back entrance and down a concrete wheelchair ramp. Moses said a knife — the apparent weapon — and a handgun, which was not used in the fight, were recovered from the scene. Security on site detained witnesses who pointed to the suspect, police said. McNutt and Dixon were involved in incidents of violence throughout their lives, court records show. In June 2005, McNutt was shot on his own block. He was charged with attempted murder in the shooting a 28-year-old on the same block a few months later. The charge was not pursued, court records show. Two years ago, McNutt was one of three people shot during an altercation outside the China Room nightclub on Calvert Street downtown and he had a number of drug convictions in Baltimore courts. Dixon also had a prior criminal history. In May 2003 he pled guilty to a drug distribution charge, receiving a 10-year sentence with nine years and six months suspended and three years of probation. A little more than a year later, he was found guilty of violating his probation and sentenced to six years. He was also found guilty in October 2005 on a burglary charge from 2004 and was sentenced to 15 years with all but five years suspended and three years of probation. A Georgia history teacher is in hot water after allowing several students to wear KKK robes to school for a play.

Catherine Ariemma, who teaches at Lumpkin County High School was suspended by the school after several African American students and one parent complained.

It's understandable that students would be upset. They were eating lunch when the students wearing KKK robes strolled through the cafeteria. None of the students at lunch had any idea the outfits were for a school play.

Ariemma says she made the mistake of letting her students walk through the cafeteria because she wasn't thinking. Her class has first period lunch. Another teacher confronted her afterwards.

"That's when I heard there were a couple of students who were upset," Ariemma said.

School Superintendent Dewey Maye told the Associated Press. "This stuff happened in history, Do you ignore it? No. But you certainly don't walk the hallway in the garb."

Student Cody Rider told WSB-TV he was ready to take care of the situation himself if need be.

"I was sitting in the lunchroom and my little cousin taps me on the shoulder -- he's also African-American -- and he was scared," he said. "There was fear in his eyes. I was like, 'What is it? I looked up and they just walked through the lunchroom in white sheets. So, I mean me, I got mad and stood up and I tried to go handle it."

Ariemma, who has taught at the school for six years, feels like she made a poor decision, but would accept her fate if she is fired.

"I am a good teacher, I speak the truth, I tell the truth. I suppose if some decides it's the end, it's the end."

It probably is the end and with good reason in my opinion.
