A submersible carrying 5 people to the Titanic imploded near the site of the shipwreck & killed everyone on board, authorities said Thursday, bringing a tragic end to a saga that included an urgent around-the-clock search & a worldwide vigil for the missing vessel.

The sliver of hope that remained for finding the 5 men alive was wiped away early Thursday, when the submersible’s 96-hour supply of oxygen was expected to run out & the Coast Guard announced that debris had been found roughly 1,600 feet from the Titanic in North Atlantic waters.

OceanGate Expeditions, the company that owned & operated the submersible, said that all 5 people in the vessel, including CEO & pilot Stockton Rush, “have sadly been lost.”

The others on board were: 2 members of a prominent Pakistani family, Shahzada Dawood & his son Suleman Dawood; British adventurer Hamish Harding & Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

OceanGate has been chronicling the Titanic’s decay & the underwater ecosystem around it via yearly voyages since 2021.

The Titan launched at 6 a.m. Sunday & was reported overdue Sunday afternoon about 435 miles south of St. John’s, Newfoundland, as it was on its way to where the Titanic sank more than a century ago. By Thursday, when the oxygen supply was expected to run out, there was little hope of finding the crew alive.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) — A woman made an unusual request during a Planning & Zoning Board meeting in Boca Raton on Thursday night.

It happened after a presentation related to a motion to approve an ordinance to amend city code for the bulk storage of flammable liquids.

The board chairman asked the audience if anyone had any questions.

The woman stood up, raised her hand & walked to the microphone. An elderly man with a cane walked behind her to the podium.

Once there, she identified herself as Ashley Cream.

The woman gave some numbers about how she believes Florida had the largest per capita population of "Sugar Daddies" in the US, with Miami, Palm Beach &  Boca with the highest concentration of "these aged benefactors."

The woman said they're helpful to the economy.

"Sugar Daddies, both gay & straight, & yes, even Sugar Mommies, are responsible for college educations, cars, homes, rents, jets & the occasional body enhancement."

The woman asked the board to decree a "Sugar Daddy and Mommy Appreciation Day" on March 10.

"That's a city council issue," responded Planning & Zoning Board chair, Arnold Sevell.

The woman & her elderly guest left the podium. She later wheeled him out of the chambers in a wheelchair.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A southern Minnesota school district is expected to vote Monday on a $1.1 million state grant meant to help curb drug use among students of color after a pair of board members delayed accepting the money by arguing it could discriminate against white students.

At least 5 members of the 7-person Faribault school board say they will vote in favor of accepting the funding when it comes to a vote Monday evening. In November, 4 of the board’s members had been deadlocked in a vote after 2 members argued that programs specifically for students of color were unfair to white students.

“Would we ever go after a grant that only targeted whites with hopes that it would trickle down to our BIPOC community? Would we do the opposite? And I don’t think we would,” Board Member LeeAnn Lechtenberg said at the meeting.

She, along with Board Member Richard Olson voted against the program.

The district serves Faribault, a city of 24,000 people. About 73% of the city is white, but it also has significant Latino & Black populations, including a Somali American community. More than 60% of the school district’s students are people of color.

A mother from the Somali community approached the school board last summer with concerns about drug use among youth in her community & the district applied for a $1.1 million grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services to curb drug use among Black, Indigenous & other students of color.

(CBS News) Papa John's Pizza's founder John Schnatter may have resigned as chairman of the restaurant chain's board of directors following news that he used a racial slur in a conference call, but he still owns a substantial stake in the company.

Schnatter owns roughly 30 percent of Papa John's. As of March 12, his stake was worth $622 million, though a recent decline in the company's stock price now values it at $479 million as of the close of trading on Wednesday.

Other major stockholders include asset management firm BlackRock, with a 9 percent stake; hedge fund Eminence Capital (6.5 percent); and investment advsier Vanguard (6 percent).

Schnatter resigned as chairman on Wednesday amid a growing uproar about his comments. Papa John's shares, which fell nearly 5 percent on Wednesday, were up 12 percent on Thursday.

Schnatter acknowledged using a racial slur during a May conference call and apologized following a media report that also said the pizza chain founder had graphically described violence against minorities.

"News reports attributing the use of inappropriate and hurtful language to me during a media-training session regarding race are true," Schnatter said in a statement released Wednesday by the company.

"Regardless of the context, I apologize. Simply stated, racism has no place in our society," Schnatter's statement said.

The media-training company working with Papa John's opted to end its business relationship with the pizza company after the call, according to Forbes. The publication reported the objectionable behavior took place on a conference call intended as a role-playing exercise for Schnatter on avoiding racially charged mishaps in the future.

Papa John's initially declined to confirm or deny the report, but said in an emailed statement that the company "condemns racism and any insensitive language, no matter the situation or setting."

The controversy comes only seven months after Schnatter relinquished his CEO role after criticizing National Football League players for kneeling during the national anthem, blaming the outcry surrounding their protests for slowing sales growth at Papa John's, at the time an NFL sponsor and advertiser.

On the May call, Schnatter reportedly said the N-word while complaining that a legendary fast-food chain founder had used the word in the past without being subjected to public backlash. He also reflected on his childhood in Indiana, saying people used to drag African-Americans from trucks until they died, according to Forbes.

The Forbes report prompted protest from the Louisville NAACP, which said Schnatter should either step down or be removed from the University of Louisville's board of trustees by the city's NAACP.

The request was complied with quickly, as Schnatter did resign from the board he'd served on for two years, its chairman, J. David Grissom, said in a statement, which also thanked the executive for his "generous" support.

"After speaking with John, I'm confident that his comments, while inappropriate, do not reflect his personal beliefs or values," said Grissom, who added the board did not condone "racism or insensitive language regardless of the setting.

Videos After The Jump

Compelling video has been released of a hostage situation gone terribly wrong in Panama City, Florida.

56-year old Clay Duke interrupted a school board meeting yesterday, by first painting a large, red ”V" on the wall. He then pulled out a handgun, telling all the women they could leave, and the male board members to stay.

Everybody in this room, except the a**holes behind that counter, hit the road. The women can leave, you six men stay,” he said.

Duke then started rambling about the school board firing his wife and how their benefits had run out. He declared that he was either going to die or be sent to prison for a long time.

School board member Ginger Littleton had left the room as instructed by the gunman. But in an incredible act of bravery, she returned and attempted to disarm Duke when he turned his back. She snuck up behind him and hit the arm holding the gun with her purse.

It didn’t work, Duke simply knocked her to the ground, calling her a “stupid b*tch.

“Quite frankly, at that point in the back of my mind, I thought . ‘You know, you’re probably right,” Littleton said later.

Littleton later told the Panama City News Herald she felt compelled to do something.

“To me it was either go for it now or live with the consequences, and I couldn’t live with the consequences,” she said. “He pointed the gun directly at my head and he didn’t choose to do that to me. I’m sure when I wake up tomorrow I’ll be a sadder, but wiser person.”

Duke spent several minutes talking to Superintendent Bill Husfelt, who swore that he didn’t remember his wife.

Husfelt asked that the other board members be let go, since he was the one who probably made the decision to fire his wife. Duke then raised his gun as Husfelt pleaded for his life, and started firing wildly.

By some miracle, he didn’t hit anyone.

A security guard wounded Duke, who then took his own life.
