Audio After The Jump Nicki Minaj has put female hip hop back on the map. You could argue that she is single handedly carrying the game on her back for femcees. Her album 'Pink Friday' is set to drop November 23, and already there's talk of if it flops, other females might not get that look from major labels. But is that talk accurate or a clever marketing ploy? V-103's DJ Greg Street recently caught up with the Harajuku Barbie and spoke with her about that topic and a lot more. "I'm in a very grateful state right now," Nicki says. "I'm trying to go in with this album so I can make people proud." There's a lot riding on this project, no doubt. Nicki feels like everybody, including her fellow female rappers should support it, or else. "They [major labels] won't look to sign other female rappers if the project doesn't so well. Because they're gonna say 'well, her buzz was so crazy, if she couldn't do it no one can do it'. I don't want that to happen so I'm doing this for all the girls." Although her career has really taken off, Nicki admits there were times early on she wasn't so sure it would. "For a long time in my life, I was afraid to be a solo female rapper, because everyone told me, 'It doesn't work. It's not going to happen. Record companies are never going to invest in you just to get it. Just be part of a group.' " she said. Young Money CEO, Lil Wayne gets released from prison November 4. Nicki says the New Orleans spitter is focused. "I'm afraid for anybody, any of his competition when he gets out. Because I just feel like it's going to be monumental. He's in a great state. When I speak to him, he sounds like he has some sort of clear understanding of everything now, almost like he's had some weird sort of epiphany since he's been there, so I'm sure his stuff is only going to get better." So is Nicki right? Should other rappers fear what will happen when Weezy gets out? And if her album flops will that kill female hip hop on a mainstream level? twitter-5d.gif

GUCCI MANE SPEAKS FROM PRISON

Radric Davis aka Gucci Mane was to hit mainstream rap hard last year but that became a distant memory when he was incarcerated. We have yet to get a statement from Gucci since he got locked up but for the first time in a recent interview with the Associated Press Gucci Mane speaks from jail. Gucci Mane talk about how he has been adjusting to jail. He celebrated his 30th birthday in Febuary and his album "The State vs. Radric Davis" hitting the number #1 spot on the rap charts all while being locked up late last year for parole violation. Gucci spoke on his future plans and where his career is going later this year. Gucci will be releaseing two albums, "The State vs. Radric Davis: The Appeal" and then "The State vs. Radric Davis: The Verdict" and a mixtape with DJ Drama later this year. Check out Gucci Mane's interview below. The Associated Press: You were featured on Carey's "Obsessed" and had the hit "Break Up" with Mario and Sean Garrett, as well as the single "Spotlight" featuring Usher. How did it feel to finally breakthrough?Gucci Mane: It felt good to finally be noticed and get some kind of acclaim. This is by far the most praise I've ever gotten. It feels like all my hard work is getting recognized. It makes me work even harder.AP: How did it feel to have your album top the charts while in jail?Gucci Mane: Excited. I still had a release party, though I wasn't there. But the day after was the toughest because I just wanted to get out there to see my fans. ... Getting on stage, it's nothing like it.AP: Gucci, you've been to jail on a few other occasions. How can you avoid being sent back again?Gucci Mane: Before I make an action, think about the consequences. ... Any decision I make is a heavy decision. I got a lot of people who depend on me. Everything I do has so much weight on it.AP: How do the other inmates treat you in jail?Gucci Mane: It's a great response. ... So I try to take a couple of these young guys under my wing and tell them what I've learned, because you can't teach nobody if you don't know anything.AP: Rappers who have been jailed in the past like Tupac has said it was difficult to jot down lyrics while in prison. How has writing songs been for you?Gucci Mane: Unfortunately I've been to jail a couple times. Anytime I come in it's difficult to make music, write songs. This time, I have a peace within me. I've been so excited to get out. I've written about 50 to 60 songs.AP: How much has your jail time been a setback on your career, which was at the peak?Gucci Mane: With money and selling CDs, I can always do that. I believe I can make all the money I've missed the last six months. But I can't regain the time with fans and family.FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER @ITSTHESOCIETY

The Game interview

Gangsta rap is dead! At least that’s what Hip Hop’s reclusive legion of Facebookbangers, Twitter hipsters and blog’d out skinny jean

b-boys would have us believe.

And, on some level, they do have a valid argument. With the global economy tilted like your local pool hall’s pinball machine and Cali penitentiaries hella crowded like public housing, things just ain’t
the same for gangstas. Consequently, it’s back to bangin’ for way too
real estate and slangin’ rocks for rims in a dope spot nowhere near you.

Knowing his golden state is a little bang’d up, THE GAME g-rides through rap’s OZONE layer leaking crimson R.E.D. comments. Chilled out in a so-Cal burger joint, we rapped about why he’s so much
smarter at 30, why he and 50 never should have dismantled the “Black
Beatles,” and why his R.E.D. Album is his most street of all. Get The
Game str8 from Chuck Taylor’s bloody mouth.

They say gangsta gap is dead, G! Is that true?
That’s obviously somebody’s opinion. It ain’t mine. But I will say that what niggas consider “gangsta” is changing. Like, the hardest niggas I’d
ever seen in the hood are wearing suits now. Dressing it up. Being more
professional about themselves and aiming more at money than each other.
Niggas in the hood are taking better care of their families and shit
now, at least more than before. But as far as gangsta rap, as long as I
got Eazy Duz It and Doggystyle spinnin’ in my changer, gangsta rap will
never die.

Is society safer now that these youngsters are tryin’ to be Drake and Wale instead of Game and Snoop? Especially on the West Coast?
I’m loving the West Coast right now. Most niggas out here are on chill
and, like I said, focused more on money than mayhem. Don’t get it
twisted though. You can still turn the wrong corner and get your melon
split, but everyone is on that cool shit. I call it the “Drake Era,” and
you can print that in bold. I fuck with Drake because he is leading
this sort of cool movement that is contagious right now in Hip Hop. I
wish ‘Pac had lived to see Cali on cool like this.

When you arrived in Hip Hop, around ’02, you were grinding to get you and the homies out of the hood. You were driven to build Black Wall Street. You’re rich now and established. What’s the motivation
today?

Two boys, my sons. One is six years old and the other is two. Harlem and
Justice, man. You could put me on the Lakers and I’d score more than
Kobe with how I’m feeling right now.

I can tell, man. I hear it. I see it. The enthusiasm. The energy. I haven’t seen you this amped since The Documentary sessions.
My sons advance my thinking. Fatherhood has forced me to think ahead and
be smarter about things. I’m even more motivated to take shit over.

We’ve followed your career from the gate. And in doing so we’ve been exposed to different people in your life. I’m going to ask you about a few of those people and see where you are, today, with those
people. Let’s start with George Ausborne Taylor, Jr.

Man… (pause)… Right now, man… (longer pause)… I ain’t seen that dude in a
minute. That’s my pops. I’ve always had real mixed feeling about that
dude. I haven’t really fucked with him in a minute because of different
shit that’s going on in the family that I don’t really wanna talk about
right now, but I recorded a song about it for the R.E.D. Album. You
listen to that joint and it’s gonna bring tears to everybody eyes.

Billboard.
That’s my Beanie Sigel if I’m Jay-Z, not the [recent] beef but the unstoppable Roc empire days. If I’m Jadakiss that’s my Styles P. That’s
my nigga for life, best friend ever. But you think I’m hardheaded
(laughs)! That nigga wouldn’t listen to nobody. I’d be like, “Let’s not
go out tonight. Let’s stay in and record.” And he’d be like “Nah, I’m
riding. Serving this nigga. That nigga.” But to be honest, and that is
my nigga for life when I say this, I think the way Billboard went out,
being murdered in the streets of L.A., is how that nigga wanted to go
out. He’d already accepted that as his will and testament. Wasn’t no
convincing the nigga otherwise. But I love that nigga, man.

Carol Edith Zeigler.
Aw, man. You spinning me around the room right now. That’s my grandmother. That woman right there was a special woman. That’s my Lena
Horne. My Oprah Winfrey. My Angela Bassett. She is another person that I
lost way too soon. My grandmother is the person who called me Game. I
wish she’d lived to see where I made it to, not necessarily all the
negative shit I had to do to reach this point, but the pinnacle I’m at
now.

Lastly, I have to ask you about that little dude that was crawling around The Documentary photo shoot in chucks and a diaper. Harlem Caron.
(laughs)… Harlem is good. That dude is Tiger Woods, man. He don’t know
nothing about no hood. He doesn’t even know that I’m a rapper. He just
has fun at school. Plays soccer, baseball, little league stuff. Plays
with his toys. Harlem is all innocent and I’m grateful that I’m able to
provide that for him. But my two year old, Justice, that dude knows my
songs and shit (laughs). He knows all my business. He’s like,”‘You goin’
to tha dudio?” (laughs)

You’ve obviously enjoyed tremendous success without 50. And, in turn, he has done well without you. But deep down, real talk, is there any part of that creative business relationship you miss? Any
regrets?

I made some of the biggest songs of my career with that dude. And it’s
not about he wrote this or I wrote that, but it was just the
collaborative effort. No different from Swizz working with Cass or Jay
working with Beans or Puff working with Bigg. I miss us being the
Voltron of Hip Hop. Em, D12, Dre, Nate, me. All of that power and
creative energy and good music.

I bet Iovine misses it too.
To this day, every time I see Jimmy he says, ‘Why’d you guys have to go and break up the Black Beatles?” And, honestly man, that relationship
didn’t have to spoil. But I’m principled. Things weren’t headed in a
direction I was comfortable with and you know me. I’m not one to hold my
tongue. I’ma tell a muthafucker when shit ain’t right.

Back in the studio with the good Doctor. He and Pharrell are executive producers on this album. How’d that reunion happen?
I wouldn’t say it’s a reunion. It’s more… (pauses)… Dre was kicking it
with Snoop one day and called me to ask if I wanted to come in and work.
We should all be happy Dr. Dre ain’t God, because the world never would
have been created in seven days. It would have taken three years like
my album… but yeah, they called me and asked if I wanted to work. One
thing led to another and we’ve been working on my album ever since.

There is so much energy in your sessions right now. Skateboard P and Dre, Snoop. And to think that you were threatening us all with your retirement after L.A.X. went platinum. What changed?
I ain’t going nowhere. What happened is Hip Hop changed. And I told
people that it would on my last album. You can hear how everybody is
just having a good time. Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, Wayne. These cats are
just having a good time and that is where Hip Hop needs to be.

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk to you about Compton. Everything from public education to public transportation to teen pregnancy rates, murder rates, violent crimes, gang-related crimes, are
through the roof. What’s it going to take for shit to change in the CPT?

50 years of dedication to changing things. See, Compton is rotten to the
core. Like you said, all the way down to the kindergarten level. By
junior high you already know that you don’t really have a good shot at
making it out. I don’t know what else I can do that I haven’t already
done. We did a lot for the hood with Black Wall Street but shit hasn’t
really improved except for a few people we helped directly.

Do you think President Obama is going to cop the R.E.D. Album?
I don’t know about cop it, but he’ll definitely have a couple songs in
his iTunes workout (laughs). Because if he cops the entire album and
listens to it his war strategy is gonna change. He’s gonna take all the
soldiers out of Iraq and send the prisoners over there instead.

What’s the biggest difference between Chuck Taylor at 20 and Chuck Taylor now, at 30?
I was a dumb, dangerous muthafucker ten years ago. Walking around with
loaded weapons and no brain. I understand life more now. I know how
things are going to end. Not when, but I know how. When is up to God’s
will. Only he knows that.

Safe to say you’re a lot richer now too, huh?
Yeah, that too (laughs). //

Over the years Kanye West has bestowed on the world a lot of gifts—classic albums, some game-changing style tips, and the Air Yeezys, to name a few. But by far the sexiest gift that ‘Ye has blessed us with is his on-again, off-again girlfriend Amber Rose. The chrome-domed beauty with a stripper past, who has become a staple of the gossip blogs, already made shaved heads hot this year, and now she’s signed a new contract with Ford Models, and will soon be seen in Kanye’s “Robocop” video. But first up: Amber’s Complex photoshoot. See, we featured Miss Rose in the 1-page “Women Are Complex, Too” article in our latest issue, but we knew that wouldn’t be enough to satisfy your appetite for the fine Philly dime. So, we went the extra mile and did a full shoot exclusively for the internet, which, if we do say so ourselves, turned out some of Amber’s sexiest photos ever. Click the link below to check out the steamy pics, or read on below for the exclusive online interview, where she speaks about growing up in the hood, her new fame, Kanye, and whether she prefers boys or girls…

Complex: You’re a Philly girl. What was your childhood like? Amber Rose: I grew up in South Philly. I grew up very poor with a single mother. My mother is a waitress, and she raised me on a waitress salary. I went to a Philadelphia public school. I’ve been in Philly my whole life, but obviously I’ve traveled in between. I was definitely not in the suburbs, I was in the inner city of South Philly. Complex: What were some street experiences you’ve witnessed? Amber Rose: Like gun violence, drug dealers, nowhere safe for the kids to play. In the schoolyard people were drinking 40s, smoking weed. I personally used to drink, I never smoked weed though. The craziest shit was just having my friends’ parents die of drug overdoses and things like somebody getting shot on the corner of my block. Complex: Did you always have an eclectic style growing up? Amber Rose: Yea, I always looked up to Slash from Guns N’ Roses. I had every single poster of Slash in my room. It was crazy because I grew up in an all-black neighborhood and everybody I went to school with was black. I was the only biracial looking girl in my school, and Slash was biracial too, he was just a fucking rock star. I always wanted to play the guitar. I’ve tried, but other things came up. Complex: What’s the status of your career? Amber Rose: Definitely more modeling, I want to change the face of modeling. I want young girls growing up to know that they can actually eat something, and be beautiful and be a model, that they can actually have a real women’s body and do modeling. I want to get into acting. I want to pursue all avenues that I can. Complex: Recently you’ve been thrust into the world of TMZ and Perez Hilton. How have you been dealing with the gossip blogs? Amber Rose: This is my life, this is how my life’s been since I was a kid. I’ve always been popular, my name has always been in somebody’s mouth in high school. I don’t lose no sleep over this shit. Some of the stuff, when it’s extremely far-fetched and stupid, I just laugh. I don’t lose a minute of sleep over this. Complex: Has your recent fame opened more doors for you? Amber Rose: Obviously, Kanye is a super-duper megastar so he definitely gave me the fast track to the top, and I love him and appreciate him so much for that. Complex: What’s one thing about ’Ye that really blew you away about him? Amber Rose: Well, the fact that there can be a noise in the background, or like a windshield wiper and he will start beat-boxing or banging on the dashboard and start doing some type of beat and it sounds so fresh. I remember when he first did something like that and he just closed his eyes, and gets in the mode. I was like, “Wow.” You have to be a genius to that. He’s amazing. Complex: Speaking of you two, Bossip just reported that you guys were broken up. Is that true? Amber Rose: Umm, I really can’t talk about that. It’s like when Brad and Angelina were together—you never really knew if they were together or not. Complex: When the pictures of you and a lady friend hit the blogs, it caused some commotion because people thought you were stepping out on Kanye. Who is that lady and what’s the story? Amber Rose: [Laughs] I will definitely straighten that one out. That is my bestest friend Dez. She’s been my friend for about ten years now. We were dancers—you know, strippers—together, and that night when we took all those pictures, I was back in Philly and hadn’t seen her in a while, and I was like, “Yo Dez, let’s just take some shots of Hennessy and take some fuckin’ pictures, just for us.” She didn’t realize I do have some type of celebrity-status, and she posted them on her MySpace. Kanye knows that that’s just my friend, we’re not lesbian lovers. Everybody made a big deal out of that and it’s like, how many girls do that everyday and take silly pictures? Complex: There’s constant chatter on the blogs about your sexual preference. Are you bisexual? Amber Rose: Yeah, they label me a bisexual freak stripper that fucks Kanye on a daily basis. [Laughs.] You know: “Amber Rose, the fucking bisexual, dyke, freak, whatever the fuck.” To answer that: I’m extremely open with my sexuality. I can be in love with a woman, I can be in love with a man. I’m not into bestiality [laughs] but as far as humans go, I definitely find beauty in everybody, whether they’re heavy-set, super-skinny, if they’re white, black, Indian, Asian, Spanish. I can see beauty in anybody. I’m not into threesomes or orgies and shit like that. If I see a women and I think she’s beautiful and I like her, and she likes me back we can definitely try to be in a relationship together. Complex: There’s going to be a time when people are going to ask you about whether you and Kanye are gonna take the relationship to the next level or if it’s just a fling. Amber Rose: Because we’re in a public eye, everybody wants to know what goes on, but we’re human beings. We have arguments—people have arguments, mothers and daughters have arguments, it’s only natural. Kanye is amazing, he’s a great person, he treats me wonderful, we have a great time together. I genuinely care for him. Complex: Did you ever have a crush on him before you guys started dating? Amber Rose: I was always a huge fan of him, like who isn’t? But he had a fiancée, it wasn’t like, “Ah, I’m gonna get with Kanye!” When I met him, it was strictly business. He wanted me for his “Robocop” video and he had the utmost respect for me, and we hung out on a friendship/business type of deal. You know, just as normal human beings when you hang out with somebody, you start to like them. Kanye knew my life, so when the blogs came out like, “Oh, Kanye do you know she was a stripper, that she used to date girls?” Kanye was like, “Tell me something I don’t know.” Everybody has a life and a past. Complex: What was it like meeting Madonna at the Met Gala? Amber Rose: Well, that night I was around superstar celebrities, and I have to say this: Madonna was the most down-to-earth person there. She was dancing having a good time. Yeah, she put her hand on my butt to take a picture, but who wouldn’t brag about that, it’s fucking Madonna! Madonna reinvents herself every two years, she was amazing, and I put the picture on Twitter to be like, “Hey look, I have a picture with Madonna.” And then everyone’s like, “Oh, they’re having threesomes,” and it’s like, c’mon it’s so not true. It’s a fucking picture, relax. Complex: How do you respond to people saying this whole Kanye situation is a publicity stunt? Amber Rose: Well, my intentions when I met Kanye was to do his video, keep it very professional and we really started to like each other. It just so happened that he started liking me and I started liking him. It’s not a publicity stunt, it’s just human beings, man. I love Kanye as a person, he’s a great person, he’s super-talented. I love him for a lot of different reasons. Complex Magazine

There were some local rappers in our hood that we were close to we kinda got inspired by them to do music along wit growin up in hip hops golden era. One of the members (Truck) who was a lil older than us was already writing songs and already had the craft mastered so he kinda inspired us also to get together and form a group. Shortly after Ruthless was born.Billy- Unlike most groups you's actually have a real history and real friendship behind the music...off topic quickly, I heard Truck is locked up at the moment will he be returning soon to the music scene ?Iron Mic- Yep exactly a lot of groups are put together, we all came up together, and we go thru things just like a family, we make up like brothers and its done. Yes Truck was locked up for 4 years, he is home now on work release and is back to business. His 1st day home we recorded some heat.Billy- Thats good, nice to know that he's out and back home recording...Had to clear that up for those who thought he was still locked up. Now I've also heard that Apocalipps is doing time right now, any truth to that and if so when is he expected home ?Iron Mic- Yeah Apocalipps is currently locked up he should be home around winter 2010, he's good tho, holdin his head, I correspond with him weekly.Billy- Good to know he'll be home sooner then we all know...now back to the music side, how did you guys link up with Rza & Wu Tang records years ago ?Iron Mic- Well we started recording music and created a local buzz on Staten Island and gained the attention of a lot of promoters etc. We linked up with Mike Mcdonald, the man behind the Wu dynasty, and started putting out some music on the independent side, from there we created an even bigger buzz, and started getting spins on hot 97. From there we had a meeting wit Penalty records around the same time CNN signed with them we didn't sign. Then we had a meeting with Steve Rifkind from Loud records still we didn't sign. Then Mike Mcdonald brought us to Rza and the Wu Tang deal happened. At that time the Wu was on top of the rap game. Which we thought was the best thing for us being from Staten Island. But it was the wrong move!Billy- I could see from how it looks and the situation itself being they were at the top at the time why it would seem like the best thing for you guys, but how did it play out into being a wrong move ?Iron Mic- Well there was a lot of friction going on, on the inside between the members and that whole thing where they were beefing about Rza having all their money etc. I don't wanna go all into that cuz I don't kno the specifics of that situation, but its obvious Rza wasn't being fair with the members. So eventually for some reason Wu Tang Records lost their distribution and that was the end of the Wu situation. But we did feature on the compilation album the Swarm which sold a lot of units it should be platinum, and we are very grateful to have had that oppurtunity because we are known worldwide because of it. And we all have gold plaques to show for itBilly- Yeah I remember from watching the U-God interview hearing about Rza and the money situation but that's on them, but I feel the situation between Rza & Ruthless B's could've been handled much better...now I heard all the shots taken on the Corner Store mixtape, how has that project been received from your fans so far ?Iron Mic- Its been great, there's really no beef at all between Ruthless Bastardz and Wu tang, but as individuals we just voice our displeasures wit the situation. But like I said there's no problems between us, I've done songs with Deck and I'm cool wit most of them, and I have the utmost respect for them and their movement, I was a big Wu fan and in my eyes they are the best rap group of all time. We were and are still considered the next Wu, which is a honor. Anybody who knows the history of the situation knos Ruthless Bastardz were supposed to come right after the Wu and keep Staten Island alive and that we will do!!Billy- Correct, and I believe out of all the groups under the Wu's wings you guys had the potential and talent to keep the ball rolling in Staten...and still do ! Now I remember hearing G-Clef saying you guys broke up a few years ago, was that true ?Iron Mic- No way, we are unbreakable! That probably came about when we started doing solo projects, but if you pay attention to those cds, we all featured on each others solo project. Ruthless is Forever a family not like these put together, make believe, wanna be groups. Excluding nobody!Billy- That's true, speaking on solo projects I'm listening to that "12 rounds vol 1" right now on datpiff.com and you killed it...& to me you showed you can easily stand on your own 2, how was it releasing that solo project and what do you feel that did for you ?Iron Mic- Thank you, I appreciate that. From the response and also from my own feelings I knew I could do my own thing and represent Ruthless to the fullest with a solo project. Behind that, the reason the solo projects started was because the members of Ruthless were constantly in and out of jail so as individuals we had to hold it down. Just wait till you hear 12 rounds vol. 2 hosted by dj Absolut, volumes 3 and 4 are also ready to go along with IRON MIC 12 rounds the albumBilly- Now whens that suppose to drop so everyone knows and where can we get it?Iron Mic- In a month or two and it will be available at hungrymen.biz. That is our independent lable. Hungrymen Entertainment/Pop ya head off Rec.Billy- Can't wait for that, now I have a few quick questions before we wrap this up...What's your all time favorite Ruthless Bastards album/mixtape ?Iron Mic- I would have to run wit the two raw for radio hosted by kay slay..Its a toss up between that and 12 rounds vol.2Billy- Yea I'd do with Too Raw for radio too...who are currently all the members in the Ruthless bastards right now ?Iron Mic- Iron Mic, Apocalipps, Truck,Sha gotti, Blizzard, P live, Beno tha kidd and Bless and Freezy the ceoBilly- Will there be a Corner Store Stickup 3 in the near future ? (Previous 2 hosted by Whoo Kid)Iron Mic- Probably so, were gonna drop a couple different projects before that, were gonna drop a few solo mixtapes, myself, blizzard, and p Live, were gonna release wu tang vs ruthless(who really runs Shaolin) and a mixtape called "Kings of the Symphony" using all the classic symphony beats.Billy- Sounds sick, can't wait for that Ruthless vs. Wu-Tang tape...I still listen to the Ruthless vs. G-unit tape...will we get a part 2 to that one? haha...Iron Mic- Maybe, there was dj from out here called dj storm , who dropped that mixtape, those mixtapes aint about no drama, they are just to compare the groups musicallyBilly- Exactly, just to get that cleared up so nobody gets the wrong impression...now any last words or shout outs and where fans can reach you and the other members for music & anything else ?Iron Mic- No doubt, my email is the closest thing to me, so they can hit me at iron456@tmail.com and also ironmicmusic at myspace, the Hungrymen websit which is the home of RUthless will be back up and running in bout 2 weeks, there the fans and real hip hop heads can get the whole Ruthless Bastardz catalog.
