COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday after being convicted of killing a mail carrier who instead of delivering a large package of marijuana to his home left a note in the mailbox requiring him to come to a South Carolina post office to pick it up.
Trevor Raekwon Seward, 25, was found guilty of murder of a federal employee in the course of her duties & other crimes in the September 2019 shooting of 64-year-old Irene Pressley as she delivered mail in rural Williamsburg County.
After finding the note in his mailbox instead of the 2-pound package of marijuana from California he was expecting, Seward confronted Pressley a few minutes later demanding his package. The U.S. Postal Service mail carrier refused.
Seward then got a semi-automatic rifle & waited for Pressley to come down a street in Andrews, firing about 20 times into the back of her mail truck.
Several bullets hit Pressley. Seward then drove the mail truck into a ditch on an access road at a hunting club, searched through it to try to find his marijuana & anything else valuable & then left the Pressley’s body in her truck.
The marijuana package was later found on the street where Pressley was killed.
The co-defendant who helped Seward look for the mail carrier was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Jerome Terrell Davis, 31, pleaded guilty to robbery & conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute & to distribute marijuana.
Even when marijuana was illegal nationwide, the value of the package would not have exceeded $2,600.
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — 4 Indigenous children survived an Amazon plane crash that killed 3 adults & then braved the jungle for 40 days before being found alive by Colombian soldiers, bringing a happy ending to a search-and-rescue saga that captivated a nation & forced the usually opposing military & Indigenous people to work together.
Cassava flour & some familiarity with the rainforest’s fruits were key to the children’s extraordinary survival in an area where snakes, mosquitoes & other animals abound. The members of the Huitoto people, aged 13, 9 & 4 years & 11 months, are expected to remain for a minimum of 2 weeks at a hospital receiving treatment after their rescue Friday.
The children were being rehydrated & cannot eat food yet.
“But in general, the condition of the children is acceptable,” Defense Minister Iván Velásquez said. They were travelling with their mother from Araracuara to San Jose del Guaviare when the plane crashed on May 1.
The Cessna single-engine propeller plane was carrying 3 adults & the 4 children when the pilot declared an emergency due to an engine failure. The small aircraft fell off the radar a short time later & a search for survivors began.
“When the plane crashed, they took out (of the wreckage) a fariña & with that, they survived,” the children’s uncle said. Fariña is a cassava flour that people eat in the Amazon region.
“After the fariña ran out, they began to eat seeds.”
Timing was in the children’s favor. They were also able to eat fruit because “the jungle was in harvest.”
“The minors were already very weak,” Astrid Cáceres, head of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare said. “And surely their strength was only enough to breathe or reach a small fruit to feed themselves or drink a drop of water in the jungle.”
A New York jury on Tuesday found former President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s, but not liable for her alleged rape.
The jury awarded her $5 million in damages for her battery & defamation claims.
Asked on their verdict sheet if Carroll, 79, had proven “by a preponderance of the evidence” that “Mr. Trump raped Ms. Carroll,” the 9-person jury checked the box that said “no.” Asked if Carroll had proven “by a preponderance of the evidence” that “Mr. Trump sexually abused Ms. Carroll,” the jury checked the box that said “yes.” Both allegations were elements of Carroll’s battery claim.
The 6 men & 3 women also found Trump had defamed her by calling her claims a “hoax” and “a con job.”
Carroll sued Trump accusing him of battery & defamation in Manhattan federal court last year, alleging he raped her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman department store near his Fifth Avenue home in 1995 or 1996.
Trump, first as president & then as a private citizen, called her account a fiction that she concocted to boost book sales & has said the writer is “not my type.” He did not testify in the case, but portions of his videotaped deposition from October were played for the jury.
BANGKOK (AP) — Law enforcement officials in Thailand said Monday they seized more than a ton of crystal methamphetamine in a southern province last week that they believed was bound for Australia.
Officials from police and the Narcotics Control Board announced that the 1.2 metric tons of the drug, also known as “ice,” likely came from Thailand’s northern border region, which is part of the Golden Triangle where the borders of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet.
Myanmar is a major producer of methamphetamine, which over the past decade has become the dominant illegal drug in Southeast Asia for both domestic consumption and export, supplanting opium and its refined product, heroin. Decades of political instability have made Myanmar’s frontier regions largely lawless and exploited by drug producers and traffickers.
The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime warned in a report in May last year that the production and trafficking of synthetic drugs such as methamphetamine is burgeoning in the region. It said the number of methamphetamine tablets seized in East and Southeast Asia exceeded a billion for the first time in 2021.
The methamphetamine seized last Wednesday in Songkhla province was disguised as packages of tea. Officials announced at a news conference that the three suspects believed to be transporting the drug had escaped. making it hard to know the traffickers’ plans.
ATLANTA (ABC7) -- A man who died in a bedbug-infested cell in a Georgia jail's psychiatric wing "died due to severe neglect," according to an independent autopsy released Monday by lawyers for his family.
Lashawn Thompson, 35, died in September, 3 months after he was booked into the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta. Public outrage over his death spread last month after a lawyer for his family, Michael Harper, released photos of Thompson's face & body covered in insects.
The independent autopsy report lists the cause of death as "Complications due to Severe Neglect," with "Untreated Decompensated Schizophrenia" identified as a contributing cause.
A combination of dehydration, rapid weight loss & malnutrition, complicated by untreated decompensated schizophrenia led to a fatal cardiac arrythmia, the report says. Because he did not receive necessary medical care or adequate food, water & shelter, his manner of death is homicide.
An earlier report from the Fulton County medical examiner's office found no obvious signs of trauma on Thompson's body but noted a "severe bed bug infestation." It lists his cause of death as "undetermined."
The new autopsy "confirms that this is one of the most deplorable in-custody deaths in the history of America," said prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family.
Thompson had lost 32 pounds, or about 18% of his body weight, during his 3 months at the Fulton County Jail & showed evidence of dehydration, the report says. In addition to an "innumerable number of insects" all over his body, his hands, feet, fingernails & toenails were filthy, it says.
Medical records from the jail indicate that Thompson received his last dose of the medications he'd been prescribed for his mental health issues 32 days before his death.
The independent autopsy was paid for by the Autopsy Initiative of the Know Your Rights Camp, an initiative started by former NFL star & activist Colin Kaepernick.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The NAACP over the weekend issued a travel advisory for Florida, joining 2 other civil rights groups in warning potential tourists that recent laws & policies championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color & LGBTQ+ individuals.”
The NAACP, long an advocate for Black Americans, joined the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), a Latino civil rights organization & Equality Florida, a gay rights advocacy group, in issuing travel advisories for the Sunshine State.
The warning approved Saturday by the NAACP’s board of directors tells tourists that, before traveling to Florida, they should understand the state of Florida “devalues & marginalizes the contributions of & the challenges faced by African Americans & other communities of color.”
Florida is one of the most popular states in the U.S. for tourists & tourism is one of its biggest industries. More than 137.5 million tourists visited Florida last year, marking a return to pre-pandemic levels. Tourism supports 1.6 million full-time & part-time jobs & visitors spent $98.8 billion in Florida in 2019, the last year figures are available.
Several of Florida’s Democratic mayors were quick to say Sunday that their cities welcomed diversity & inclusion.
The NAACP’s decision comes after the DeSantis’ administration in January rejected the College Board’s Advanced Placement African American Studies course. DeSantis & Republican lawmakers also have pressed forward with measures that ban state colleges from having programs on diversity, equity & inclusion, as well as critical race theory, & also passed the Stop WOKE Act that restricts certain race-based conversations & analysis in schools & businesses.
