For Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, entering the high-end audio market hasn't been easy but the competitive rapper recently secured a strategic partnership that may give his headphone venture the solid footing needed to take on rivals.
The rapper purchased fashion headphone company Kono Audio to launch his own consumer electronics company in late 2011, one that would be named SMS Audio. SMS, which stands for studio-mastered sound, was off to a rough start after 50 had to settle a hefty $16 million lawsuit in late 2014 for a deal gone sour with Sleek Audio, and continued to face stiff competition from a market glutted with celebrity-endorsed headphones. Thanks to the success of Beats by Dre, the personas of everyone from Bob Marley to Lady Gaga have been used to forge this new market of headphones that often cost $300 or more.
While SMS counts celebrities like music producer Timbaland and NBA star Carmelo Anthony as celebrity investors, the headphone manufacturer would need much more than star power to compete, especially after Apple purchased Beats by Dre last year for $3 billion. Beats commands a 27% market share of the headphones market, according to CNN. Also, the report cites market research from the NPD Group that shows it controls more than half of the market for “luxury” headphones.
To counter, SMS partnered with Intel in December 2014 to develop sports-and fitness-related headphones. More recently, 50 Cent is taking a different tack to distinguish his company. Just this March it inked a multi-year partnership with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars. Chinx was one of our favorite artists. He was brutally gunned down in Queens, New York over the weekend (May 18, 2015).
His real name was Lionel Pickens. He was only 31-years old and just starting to shine as a member of French Montana's Coke Boys and an original member of the late Stack Bundles' Riot Squad.
Here's an unreleased remix he recorded with Vado over Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's "Deep Cover."

Young Thug's "Barter 6" album has received both praise and criticism from bloggers, musicians and industry insiders alike- even our own Vlad has taken a liking to the "Lifestyle" rapper after his latest release. Charlamagne Tha God, however, isn't stepping on the Thugger bandwagon just yet. "I have no desire to hear it," he says on the "Barter 6." "I have nothing against Young Thug, [I] don't know the young man- [I'm] just not interested in his music.
"I like rappers that I can actually understand," Charlamagne continues. "The shit he's on, I ain't on it." The radio and television personality feels like Young Thug is setting himself up for failure as he tries to emulate Lil Wayne, especially after he tried to take Wayne's name for his own project. "Carter is Lil Wayne's last name- it's an iconic series and you just jump out there and say 'Hey, I'm gonna call my album the Carter 6'? That shit's kinda corny to me," Charlamagne states. And it's not like he's exactly siding with Wayne, who did the exact same thing with Juvenile's "400 Degreez" - Charlamagne says he didn't like Lil Wayne's album '500 Degreez' either. "'500 Degreez' sucked to me compared to '400 Degreez."
At the end of the clip, Charlamagne offers Young Thug some honest advice: "Be the best Young Thug you can be, because people f*** with Young Thug. Whatever fanbase you do have, keep capitalizing off of that. You can't be that young man Lil Wayne." Charlamagne even thinks his Rich Gang affiliate Rich Homie Quan has more staying power than him. "I like Rich Homie Quan better than Young Thug," he says.
