Voters in & states have approved ballot measures that will change their state constitutions to prohibit slavery & involuntary servitude as punishment for crime, while those in a fifth state rejected a flawed version of the question.
The measures approved Tuesday could curtail the use of prison labor in Alabama, Oregon, Tennessee & Vermont.
In Louisiana, a former slave-holding state & 1 of a handful that sentences convicted felons to hard labor, lawmakers trying to get rid of forced prisoner labor ended up torpedoing their own measure. They told voters to reject it because the ballot measure included ambiguous language that did not prohibit involuntary servitude in the criminal justice system.
“It is time for all Americans to come together & say that it must be struck from the U.S. Constitution. There should be no exceptions to a ban on slavery,” Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley, a Democrat said.
More than a dozen states still have constitutions that include language permitting slavery & involuntary servitude for prisoners. Several other states have no constitutional language for or against the use of forced prison labor.
Today, prison labor is a multibillion-dollar practice. By comparison, workers can make pennies on the dollar. And prisoners who refuse to work can be denied privileges such as phone calls & visits with family, as well as face solitary confinement, all punishments that are eerily similar to those used during antebellum slavery.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - The prisoner that escaped from Southern Desert Correctional Center made a dummy & used battery acid to break down the window frame of his cell.
Paul Lunkwitz, the President of Fraternal Order of Police Nevada C.O., said Porfirio Duarte-Herrera then either hopped over a perimeter fence or went through it.
Lunkwitz said the tower that would have eyes on the unit Duarte-Herrera escaped from was unmanned & had been for a couple of years.
The Nevada Department of Corrections said the medium-security inmate was reported missing at 7 a.m. Tuesday but believe he may have escaped as early as last Friday night.
Gov. Steve Sisolak released a statement Tuesday that said in part, “This is unacceptable. My office has ordered NDOC to conduct and complete a thorough investigation into this event as quickly as possible. This kind of security lapse cannot be permitted & those responsible will be held accountable.”
The unit Duarte-Herrera escaped from includes 200 inmates, according to Lunkwitz. However, he said typically there’s just one officer working & often they’re on overtime.
Records show the escaped prisoners codefendant in the 2007 murder remains in custody at another Nevada prison where he is serving a life sentence.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Nabila works 10 hours or more a day, doing the heavy, dirty labor of packing mud into molds & hauling wheelbarrows full of bricks. At 12 years old, she’s been working in brick factories half her life now & she’s probably the oldest of all her co-workers.
“We can’t think about anything else but work,” she said.
Nowhere is it clearer than in the many brick factories on the highway north out of the capital, Kabul. Conditions in the furnaces are tough even for adults. But in almost all of them, children as young as 4 are found laboring alongside their families from early in the morning until dark in the heat of summer.
Children are doing every step of the brickmaking process. They haul cannisters of water, carry the wooden brick molds full of mud to set them out in the sun to dry. They load & push wheelbarrows full of dried bricks to the kiln for firing, then push back wheelbarrows full of fired bricks. They pick through the smoldering charcoal that’s been burned in the kiln for pieces that can still be used, inhaling the soot & singeing their fingers.
Mohabbat, a 9-year-old boy, stopped for a moment with a pained expression as he carried a load of charcoal. “My back hurts,” he said.
Asked what he wished for, he first asked, “What is a wish?” Then once it was explained, he was quiet a moment, thinking. “I wish to go to school & eat good food,” he said. “I wish to work well so that we can have a house.”
“There’s no other way,” he said. “How can we study when we don’t have bread to eat? Survival is more important.” We’re used to it,” he said. Then he told another boy, “Hurry up, let’s finish it.”
Workers get the equivalent of $4 for every 1,000 bricks they make. One adult working alone can’t do that amount in a day, but if the children help, they can make 1,500 bricks a day.

NEW YORK (Fox5) - Three children have died after they were found unconscious on the beach on Coney Island & their mother is being questioned by police in connection with their apparent drownings.
The children are a 3-month-old baby, a 4-year-old girl & a 7-year-old boy.
NYPD officers responded to aa apartment at around 1:40 a.m. after family members called 911 from a different location with concerns that their relative may have harmed her 3 young children.
Officers went to the apartment but no one answered the door. They came across a man in the building who said that he was the father of 1 of the children. He also expressed concerns about the safety of the children.
He told officers that he believed that the mother & children were on the boardwalk.
Officers began a search for the woman & children on the boardwalk, beach & streets of Coney Island. The search lasted about 90 minutes until police got another 911 call directing them to Brighton 6th St. & Riegelmann Boardwalk.
That is where they found the 30-year-old woman but not the children. Police say she was soaking wet & barefoot when they picked her up. They said they were unsure if she had been in the rain or had been in the ocean.
The NYPD says that is when the search was intensified, including aviation units & harbor units. They found the children on the beach about 2 miles down the boardwalk from where they found their mother.
Crews immediately began CPR on the children. EMS rushed them to Coney Island Hospital but it was too late to save their lives.
They added that it did not appear that there were any prior cases of abuse or neglect involving the woman.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A gunman who livestreamed himself driving around Memphis shooting at people, killing 4 & wounding 3 others in 7 shootings and at least 2 carjackings in seemingly random attacks, was finally arrested after crashing a stolen car, police said early Thursday.
Ezekiel Kelly, 19, was arrested without incident at around 9 p.m.
Police did not discuss a motive or release the identities of those who were killed or wounded. It was too early in the investigation to discuss how the suspect got the gun or guns used in the shootings.
In February 2020, Kelly, then 17, was charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, using a firearm to commit a dangerous felony & reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.
Records show he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault & was sentenced in April 2021 to 3 years. Kelly was released from prison in March, 11 months after he was sentenced.

MIAMI (AP) — Prosecutors in South Florida announced a second-degree murder charge Thursday against social media model Courtney Clenney related to the fatal stabbing of her live-in boyfriend.
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle announced the charge against the 26-year-old model during a news conference. Clenney was arrested Wednesday in Hawaii. Fernandez Rundle said Clenney, who goes by the name Courtney Tailor on platforms like Instagram & OnlyFans, remains jailed in Hawaii while authorities work to have her extradited to Florida.
Fernandez Rundle characterized Christian Obumseli’s April 3 death at the couple’s Miami apartment as the culmination of a “tempestuous & combative relationship” that began in November 2020. The county medical examiner said in an autopsy report that Obumseli, who worked in cryptocurrency, died from a forceful downward thrust from a blade that went 3 inches into his chest, piercing a major artery.
Clenney acknowledged killing Obumseli but said she was acting in self defense. She said Obumseli had pushed her & thrown her to the floor, which prompted her to grab & knife and throw it at Obumseli from about 10 feet away. The medical examiner said Obumseli’s wound could not have been caused by a knife thrown from that distance.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department announced civil rights charges Thursday against 4 Louisville 4 over the 2020 drug raid that led to the death of Breonna Taylor.
Federal officials “share but cannot fully imagine the grief” felt by Taylor’s family, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in announcing the charges.
“Breonna Taylor should be alive today,” he said. The charges range from unlawful conspiracies, use of force & obstruction of justice.
The charges are against former officers Joshua Jaynes, Brett Hankison, Kelly Goodlett & Sgt. Kyle Meany.
Local activists & members of the Taylor family celebrated the charges & thanked federal officials.
“This is a day when Black women saw equal justice in America,” lawyer Benjamin Crump said.
Taylor was shot to death by Louisville officers who had knocked down her door while executing the search warrant. Taylor’s boyfriend fired a shot that hit 1 of the officers as they came through the door & they returned fire, striking Taylor multiple times.
Hankison is facing 2 civil rights charges alleging he used excessive force when he retreated from Taylor’s door, turned a corner 2 fired 10 shots into the side of her two-bedroom apartment. Bullets flew into a neighbor’s apartment, nearly striking 1 man.
He was acquitted by a jury of state charges of wanton endangerment earlier this year.
Jaynes had applied for the warrant to search Taylor’s house. He was fired in January 2021 by former Louisville Police interim chief Yvette Gentry for violating department standards in the preparation of a search warrant execution & for being “untruthful” in the Taylor warrant.
Jaynes & Goodlett allegedly conspired to falsify an investigative document that was written after Taylor’s death. Federal investigators also allege Meany, who testified at Hankison’s trial earlier this year, lied to the FBI during its investigation.
SAN DIEGO (ABC7 Chicago) More than 5,000 pounds of methamphetamine were seized this week after authorities in San Diego County tracked and intercepted a truck that crossed the US border from Mexico, officials said Friday.
Four men from Tijuana, Mexico, were arrested & charged with conspiracy to distribute the highly addictive drug in what officials described as one of the largest meth busts in San Diego County.
"This monumental seizure represents another win against drug cartels that fuel addiction in the United States," said Shelly S. Howe, a Special Agent in Charge at the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
The 20-foot commercial truck, which was carrying 148 meth bundles, crossed the border Thursday through the Otay Mesa Commercial Port of Entry in San Diego, the US Attorney's Office said in a statement.
Law enforcement followed the vehicle to National City, California, where agents saw the accused men unloading dozens of cardboard boxes from the truck into a Dodge van. The bundles found in the boxes tested positive for methamphetamine.
In April, US Customs and Border Protection officers in California seized more than 400 pounds of meth, cocaine & heroin concealed in toolboxes that were being transported to the country. That seizure carried an estimated street value of $2.56 million, CBP said.
Meth is a highly addictive stimulant that usually takes the form of a powder. In 2020, more than 23,000 Americans died from overdoses involving psychostimulants, primarily meth, according to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

COLOMA, Mich. (WNDU) - A home health nurse is facing murder and drug charges after police claim she’s responsible for the death of a 3-year-old in Coloma Township.
Coloma police responded to 6209 Brecht Road around 2:30 AM on Monday.
That’s where they found the parents of an unresponsive 3-year-old performing life-saving measures on their child who was missing their breathing tube & already dealing with several medical conditions.
Police also found the woman hired to monitor the child that night in no state to help out.
“Through an investigation, the officers found out that was the registered nurse that was supposed to care for the child throughout the night. After the investigation was completed, we determined that she was high on methamphetamines & should not have been in care of that child,” said Police Chief Wes Smigielski.
That nurse is 42-year-old Judith Sobol who now faces a charge of second-degree murder & possession of meth.
She not only had meth on her person when police arrived at the scene, but she also admitted to using it.
According to the probable cause document, Sobol told police she shot up meth the same day she was scheduled to care for the victim. She also admitted to shooting up meth four days straight that same week before heading to work.
The report says she admitted she was “not in the right state of mind to be at work & should have never come to work at all.”
Police found a small container in Sobol’s purse with meth & 2 pipes inside.
Sobol is being held on a $500,000 bond at the Berrien County Jail.

A federal grand jury indicted the four men back on March 10. According to the indictment, starting in November of 2018 & continuing through March of 2022, the 4 men allegedly conspired with each other & others to distribute fentanyl, meth, U-47700 & marijuana. They also allegedly carried, used & possessed firearms during this time.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says as a result of their actions, 3 people died & another was seriously injured. Officials say the 4 men are responsible for dealing around $5 million worth of drugs.
“The counterfeit oxycodone pills--sometimes known as ‘blues’ or ‘M30s’--that were distributed in the Texarkana area contain deadly fentanyl,” said Featherston. “Increasingly, we are seeing more street drugs with deadly fentanyl added to them & it is killing the users. More people need to be aware of this increasing trend that can kill the recreational drug user. Simply put, one pill can kill!”
If convicted, the men could face anywhere from 25 years to life in federal prison.
The gunman, Salvador Ramos, who authorities say killed 21 people in a South Texas community – 19 of them elementary school students – legally purchased two rifles in the days following his 18th birthday, authorities said.
Officials said they recovered the two AR-15 style rifles from the scene at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. The gunman, who had attended Uvalde High School, purchased one of the rifles from a federally licensed gun store on May 17, the day after his 18th birthday, according to authorities and Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, who said law enforcement officials briefed him on the purchases.
A day later, on May 18, the gunman purchased 375 rounds of ammunition. And on May 20, he purchased the second rifle.
That's four days before Tuesday's massacre, which ended in the deaths of the students and two adults.
At 11:32 a.m., a person called police reporting a crash at the school, and a man with a gun exiting the damaged vehicle.
The man left one rifle in his truck, according to officials. He took the other and walked toward the school, also carrying a backpack containing several magazines of ammunition.
He dropped that backpack near the school entrance. But inside, investigators found seven 30-round magazines – though it's not clear if they contained live rounds.
In Texas, people who are 18 or older are legally allowed to buy long guns, such as rifles or shotguns. With few exceptions, they must be 21 to purchase a handgun.
A convicted murderer on the run since escaping a prison bus after stabbing its driver last month was fatally shot by law enforcement after he killed a family of 5 & stole a truck from a rural weekend cabin, a Texas prison system spokesman said.
Gonzalo Lopez, 46, died in a shootout with police late Thursday in Jourdanton, about 35 miles south of San Antonio, after driving the pickup more than 200 miles from the cabin, said Jason Clark, spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Lopez had an AR-15-style rifle & a pistol that authorities say may have been taken from the cabin.
Authorities in Atascosa County — about 220 miles southwest of the cabin — recognized the stolen pickup from an alert sent out hours earlier by law enforcement and stopped it with spike strips, Clark said. Lopez then crashed the truck into a tree in a residential area and ran.
“Those officers very swiftly shot & killed Lopez bringing this whole ordeal to an end,” Clark said.
The search for Lopez, who escaped while being transported in a caged area of a prison bus, heightened Thursday when someone called police because they were concerned they had not heard from an elderly relative.
Lopez had been the subject of an intensive search since his May 12 escape from the prison bus. He was being transported from a prison in Gatesville, more than 100 miles west of the place where he escaped, to one in Huntsville for a medical appointment when he escaped in Leon County, a rural area between Dallas & Houston.

"He was recommended 1 year ankle monitor after the halfway house approve his home address; which will bring him home to us late next year, but our goal is for him to complete his GED or RDAP Drug program so we can get another year off his sentence. That will bring him home to us in less than a year. We need prayer hands."
