ALHINDE WEEMS led a double life: He was a Philadelphia police officer and a drug dealer.

On Friday (July 23), he paid the price when he was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Joel Slomsky to 15 years - the mandatory minimum but within sentencing guidelines - in a federal lockup
.

The sentencing of Weems came little more than a week after a federal indictment last week of three Philadelphia police officers who were accused of stealing 300 grams of heroin from a drug supplier in exchange for $10,000 cash from an accused drug dealer.

Weems is the latest in a cadre of ex-Philly cops - after Malik Snell and Rickie Durham - to be sentenced in the last year to federal prison on corruption and drug-related charges.

Snell received a 30-year sentence and Durham got a two-year sentence. (Federal prosecutors are appealing Durham's sentence.)

Weems, who pleaded guilty in January to distribution of crack, attempting to rob a drug dealer and related weapons offenses, had been a 5 1/2-year veteran of the force, working in West Philadelphia's 18th Police District and making $62,330 a year.

The married father of four was contrite. "I'm ashamed to stand before you today in this situation," he told Slomsky, adding that he had "embarrassed" his family, friends and fellow police officers.

Weems maintained - as did family and friends - that his criminal misdeeds were "totally out of character" and that he was a "good man."

But Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Carrillo said Weems was a dirty cop.

"His badge was a means to commit crimes and not protect the public," she said.

When Slomsky asked how a cop who had no prior criminal record could suddenly go bad, defense attorney Jack J. McMahon Jr. offered a novel theory.

He said many police officers get "desensitized" to the "serious reality and danger" of the drug trade "because they see it every day. If they arrest 10 drug dealers one day, 10 more are back on the streets the next day."

But the explanation didn't wash with the judge. "When law-enforcement officers don't obey the law, nobody is safe," Slomsky said.

Earlier, the judge read portions of a letter submitted to the court by Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey.

Ramsey wrote that Weems "tarnished the badge he wore" and "put a mark on this department that the rest of us must now work hard to erase."

As with other corrupt police officers, Ramsey said Weems' badge will be destroyed and melted into a lump of metal.

Weems had been taken in by a federal informant in December 2008 who was working with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The informant passed along information that Weems was a drug dealer.

Court papers said the informant bought an ounce of crack from Weems on Dec. 17, 2008, for $1,300 and two ounces of crack on Jan. 14, 2009, for $2,400.

A few weeks later, Weems bought and transported what he thought was a $30,000 kilo of cocaine from Maryland for someone he thought was a drug dealer but was really an undercover agent. Weems was paid $500, and sham cocaine was used in the sting.

Weems subsequently began planning to rob a drug dealer's stash house, meeting four times with the informant and undercover agent, who taped the conversations.

During the meetings, Weems stated he would use his badge, uniform and service revolver to enter the house and subdue any occupants, court papers said.

The robbery never occurred because authorities arrested Weems on March 27, 2009, before the planned robbery.

A mother who never thought she would see her son and daughter again got a miraculous break when she found one of them on Facebook.

The mom's husband Faustino Utrera kidnapped the children in 1995 when they were two and three years old from San Bernadino, California and told the mom she would never see them again.

Fifteen years later she found her daughter by typing her name in on Facebook. She added her as a friend and through conversations became convinced it was really her child.

The San Bernadino police were contacted and eventually Utrera was arrested in Central Florida where he had moved with the children. He's been charged with two counts of kidnapping, and two counts of violating child custody orders.

The kids. now ages 16 and 17 are now in state custody. The mom is trying to get them back, but Carrie Hoeppner of Florida's Department of Children and Families said initially things might be difficult for all of them.

"There is no relationship there," Hoeppner said. "You don't have that immediate joyful reunification. If in fact that is what will progress, it will take time. These children will have to build a relationship, and that is something that will not happen overnight."

A 22-year-old man accused of posing as a high school basketball star in West Texas was charged with sexual assault Friday after an underage girl reported having sex with him last summer when she thought he was a teenager, police said.

Guerdwich Montimer was arrested for the third time in four days, this time after a 16-year-old girl in Odessa told police and school district officials she had sex with him at a home in August when she thought he was 15-year-old Jerry Joseph, said Odessa police Cpl. Sherrie Carruth.

Officials said Montimer enrolled at a junior high school and later at Permian High School last year with a fake birth certificate from Haiti. Suspicions were raised recently after coaches at an amateur basketball tournament said they recognized Joseph as Montimer, a 2007 graduate of a Florida high school and a naturalized U.S. citizen from Haiti.

Montimer was being held in jail Friday on a $50,000 bond, according to a court affidavit released Friday.

Montimer was originally arrested Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of failure to identify himself to a police officer, and school officials said he admitted that he wasn't Joseph. He was arrested again Thursday on a third-degree felony charge of tampering with a government document.

A jail official said Friday there was no information about whether Montimer had an attorney. The sexual assault charge, a second-degree felony, carries a sentence of two to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.

Based on information provided by the girl, investigators determined Montimer "intentionally and knowingly engaged in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old juvenile and portrayed himself to be 15 years old when he was actually 21 years of age," Carruth, the Odessa police official, said in a statement.

Permian High School made the state basketball playoffs with Joseph helping lead the way as a sophomore star. Questions arose after the season, and Joseph was initially cleared by immigration authorities and allowed to return to the school.

The investigation continued, and a fingerprint from a passport found in his room matched one taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after the allegations surfaced, according to an affidavit. School officials said Montimer confessed after he was confronted with the new evidence.

His last name has been widely reported as Montimere, including by The Associated Press, but an affidavit released Thursday had several references to official documentation with Montimer, the spelling used by Odessa police.

SEATTLE -- The mother of a Ballard High School student is fuming after the health center on campus helped facilitate her daughter's abortion during school hours.

The mother, whom KOMO News has chosen to identify only as "Jill," says the clinic kept the information "confidential."

When she signed a consent form, Jill figured it meant her 15 year old could go to the Ballard Teen Health Center located inside the high school for an earache, a sports physical, even birth control, but not for help terminating a pregnancy.

"She took a pregnancy test at school at the teen health center," she said. "Nowhere in this paperwork does it mention abortion or facilitating abortion."

Jill says her daughter, a pro-life advocate, was given a pass, put in a taxi and sent off to have an abortion during school hours all without her family knowing.

"We had no idea this was being facilitated on campus," said Jill. "They just told her that if she concealed it from her family, that it would be free of charge and no financial responsibility."

The Seattle School District says it doesn't run the health clinics at high schools. Swedish Medical Center runs the clinic at Ballard High and protects the students' privacy.

T.J. Cosgrove of the King County Health Department, which administers the school-based programs for the health department, says it's always best if parents are involved in their children's health care, but don't always have a say.

"At any age in the state of Washington, an individual can consent to a termination of pregnancy," he said.

But Jill says she not only didn't have a say in her daughter's abortion, but also didn't know about it.

"Makes me feel like my rights were completely stripped away."

With his mixtape (The First Flight) and countless other singles/remixes (Star Is Born, Point to Prove, Set Me Free) being recognized by fans, yet overlooked by major media outlets, it took the release of his remix to Drake's, "Over" (Just The Beginning), that eventually got Daniel "Diggy" Simmons love shown by said outlets for being "the first" to drop something over the newly then released track. Although people were receptive of his remake of the new single, Diggy still had more hearts and ears to capture and win over, with the goal of letting everyone know that him creating music was not a hobby but a passion and it was something he is great at.

Going back into the studio, the young fashion icon spit a crazy sixteen over Nas' "Made You Look", and unleashed "Flow Stoopid". Linking up with PhilTheGod to create a visual along with the track, Flow Stoopid, was the hit that finally got Diggy more love then anticipated. With cosigns by Lupe Fiasco and Swizz Beatz via twitter and blog postings by Kanye West and Common, Diggy EARNED his buzz that has major companies, labels and the internet wanting to get familiar with him.

The brutal beating and robbery of a girl in a Seattle bus tunnel has been caught on tape -- along with the inaction of three security guards from whom she sought protection.

A teen girl and three young men face first-degree robbery charges stemming from the attack, during which they allegedly stole the 15-year-old's purse, phone, and iPod.

The 15-year-old victim, who is black, told cops the altercation began at a nearby Macy's, where some in the group taunted her saying she had "nice things" and acts "white," according to court papers filed Wednesday. One of the defendants claims the victim pepper-sprayed a person in the group.

Two Seattle police officers noticed the escalating situation and kicked the group out of the store, then brought the girl and her friend to another exit, the victim said. She reported that she asked the officers for an escort to the bus tunnel, just below the department store, but the officers refused.

She said she then deliberately stood next to the security guards in hopes of warding off further confrontation.

"I went to the security and told them that these kids were trying to jump me," the girl said. "I know that I am about to get jumped and I am hanging around the guards to try and get protection. ... I thought the security guards would defend me."

The guards didn't intervene, though. They have standing orders to "observe and report," so they called police but did nothing else as another 15-year-old girl punched and repeatedly kicked the victim in the head.

King County Sheriff's Sgt. John Urquhart said the guards were right to follow their training.

"If you're a bank teller and you do something other than give them the money, you're going to get fired," Urquhart said. "We don't expect civilians to take police action. In this case, it was a violent fight, and they were outnumbered by this pack of people 3-to-1."

Other Kings County officials disagree.

"We are very disappointed in what people see in that video," a transit official, Kevin Desomond, said. "It was absolutely unacceptable."

Government officials as well as executives at Olympic Security Services Inc., which employs the guards, are reviewing protocol in the wake of the incident.

Video After The Jump NY Daily News Reports Two suspects were arrested and third is being questioned in the gang rape of a California teen outside a high school homecoming dance, police said Tuesday. The 15-year-old Richmond High School student hospitalized in stable condition after the attack, which happened while as many as 15 people, all males, looked on but didn't help or call police, investigators said. The sex assault took place on school grounds Saturday while the dance was under way inside the school, authorities said. "She was raped, beaten, robbed and dehumanized by several suspects who were obviously OK enough with it to behave that way in each other's presence," said Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan. "What makes it even more disturbing is the presence of others," Gagan said. "People came by, saw what was happening and failed to report it." Manuel Ortega, 19, a former student at the school, was arrested soon after he ran from the scene. He faces charges of rape, robbery and kidnapping, and was held on $800,000 bail. A 15-year-old was also arrested and charged with one count of felony sexual assault. A third teenager was being questioned, police said. "Based on witness statements and suspect statements, and also physical evidence, we know that she was raped by at least four suspects committing multiple sex acts," Gagan said. "As people announced over time that this was going on, more people came to see, and some actually participated," Gagan said.

Police said a "full-court press" was under way, including reviews of Facebook and YouTube, to find other attackers and bystanders who witnessed the rape. "We're looking in particular to see if anyone posted any video of the incident," Gagan said. Several other individuals were detained but not arrested, Simon said. The victim was found unconscious under a bench shortly before midnight Saturday after police received a call from someone who overheard people "reminiscing about the incident," Gagan said. Police said the girl left the dance and was walking to meet her father for a ride home when a classmate invited her to join a group drinking in the courtyard. "Right now, we're looking at toxicology reports to determine her blood-alcohol content and to determine if she was drugged." "This just gets worse and worse the more you dig into it," Gagan told CNN. "It was like a horror movie after looking at the evidence. I can't believe not one person felt compelled to help her."

LATIMES Reports A 15-year-old Los Angeles girl who navigated a single-engine Cessna through thunderstorms in Texas and took in breathtaking aerial views of Arizona’s sunsets — landed her plane to cheering crowds at Compton Woodley Airport today, becoming the youngest African American female pilot to fly solo across country. Kimberly Anyadike took off from Compton 13 days ago with an adult safety pilot and Levi Thornhill, an 87-year-old who served with the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. They flew to Newport News, Va., making about a dozen stops along the way. Anyadike learned to fly a plane and helicopter when she was 12 with the Compton-based Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum, an after-school program that offers aviation lessons to at-risk youth and economically disadvantaged students. The organization owns the small plane. She loved the feeling of streaking across the sky. She told her mom that it was like a wild ride at Magic Mountain. Always up for a challenge, she came up with the idea to fly across the country a few months after learning to fly. Robin Petgrave, the aeronautical museum’s founder, warned that it would take a lot of preparation. “I told her it was going to be a daunting task,” he said, “but she just said, ‘Put it on. I got big shoulders.’ ” Anyadike said she didn’t want to make the trip to set a record or become some kind of celebrity. “I wanted to inspire other kids to really believe in themselves,” she said. She also wanted to honor the Tuskegee Airmen, the U.S. Army Air Corps’ all-black combat unit who served during World War II. “They left such a great legacy. I had big shoes to fill,” she said. “All they wanted to do was to be patriots for this country. They were told no, that they were stupid, that they didn’t have cognitive development to fly planes. They didn’t listen. They just did what they wanted to do.”

Anyadike’s Cessna and the other planes at Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum are painted with red tails, similar to the Tuskegee Airmen planes. During her cross-country trip, Anyadike met about 50 Tuskegee Airmen who autographed the Cessna. “That way they can fly with us forever,” Petgrave said. How will the young pilot celebrate? “By sleeping,” she said with a giggle.
