Nipsey Hussle's dreams were coming to fruition. He had released his critically acclaimed debut album titled "Victory Lap," which got nominated for Best Rap Album at the 61st Grammy Awards, had opened the Marathon Clothing store in the South Los Angeles neighborhood where he grew up, had his own record label and was giving back to his community.

Tragically, on March 31, 2019, Nipsey's life was cut short when he was shot and killed outside of his clothing store. He was just 33-years old.

We'll never know all of the things Nipsey would have gone on to accomplish, but he's an inspiration to many youths coming up in the inner city.

He's a shining example of what you can achieve if you believe in yourself and work hard.

Rest in peace Nipsey Hussle "Tha Great." You will always be remembered.

Video After The Jump

The coronavirus pandemic has slammed New York City so hard that health care workers are using forklifts to load dead bodies into refrigerated trucks, according to a viral video.

The 5-minute and 32-second clip posted to YouTube shows medical officials helping to load the corpses in body bags into the mobile morgue outside Brooklyn Hospital Center in Fort Greene, according to a man shooting the clip who does not identify himself.

“This is for real. This is Brooklyn,” a man filming the terrifying event can be heard saying in the video.

“They putting the bodies in the 18-wheeler … this is no joke … this is Brooklyn Hospital,” the man says as he begs for people to “stay inside” as the deadly virus continues to pummel the city.

The trembling man continues, “This may make you want to take this serious.”

New York City’s hospitals have been completely overwhelmed amid the outbreak of COVID-19.

Video After The Jump

In this episode of People’s Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and former high school teacher -- D Smoke. This extensive interview covers Smoke's youth, growing up Inglewood, California in a musical family with his mother Jackie singing for greats like Anita Baker, Tina Turner, and Michael Jackson, and her teaching him to play piano, starting at age 6. The trio discusses the early days of WoodWorks Records, Smoke and his brother having their own corner store selling CDs and merchandise to promote their movement, and ghostwriting for Genuine, The Pussycat Dolls, and others.

Later, D Smoke, Kweli, and Jasmin talk about different perspectives of what defines success, D's heartfelt song 'Free' (dedicated to his close friend Chiz who passed away due cancer), gang affiliations being inevitable growing up in the hood, D's use of the word 'Latinx', and the topic of N-word passes. D Smoke gives his take on his frequent comparisons to Kendrick Lamar and is asked how he has successfully balanced the hustler and pro-black sides of his identity simultaneously. Smoke is also asked about his work teaching at Inglewood High School, and what unique challenges teachers of color face working within marginalized communities.

In the second half of the conversation, things move to D Smoke's appearance on the Netflix hit show 'Rhythm + Flow'. Smoke talks about his unforgettable face-off with Snoop Dogg, and the friendship that was established in its aftermath. Both Talib and D agreeing on it being one of the realest moments on television. They discuss Cardi-B and her growth as a judge on the show, as well as his memorable battle with Old Man Saxon, how he got through forgetting words during a performance, and what was going through his head as they announced the winner of the competition. D also speaks on his latest album 'Black Habits', and the creative process behind it, physical bullying vs. cyber-bullying, cancel culture, working with rapper The Game, and what Kobe Bryant and his memory means to him and the city of Los Angeles.

The Weeknd defied higher level music industry heads and refused to put his album release on ice in the throes of the coronavirus pandemic ... and now he looks like a genius!!!

Here's the deal ... The Weeknd announced a March 20 release date for his new project "After Hours" long before the virus reached the United States ... and as the situation became serious, higher-ups started pressuring him to delay the release.

We're told the higher level heads had serious fears the album would flop because of a lack of marketing opportunities ... TV appearances were drying up as the outbreak started shutting down Hollywood.

They weren't alone in their fears ... Lady Gaga had already postponed her own project, "Chromatica."

The Weeknd trusted his work and his fans, and wanted to push forward with the release ... so he made the ultimate decision to drop the album, giving people a much-needed distraction and some joy in a dark time.

So far, The Weeknd's looking pretty smart ... the album passed 1 BILLION streams in its first week, and the first day saw 100 million streams. At one point, "After Hours" songs held the top 12 spots on the Apple Music Top 100.

Bottom line ... The Weeknd bet on himself, and won big time.

AFTER TESTING POSITIVE for COVID-19, superstar actor Idris Elba, who's built a career playing tough, streetwise characters like Baltimore gangster Stringer Bell, went online to set the record straight: Your skin color, he warned, won't protect you from the coronavirus.

"Black people, please, please, please understand that coronavirus, you can get it," Elba said, trying to quash a rumor swirling through cyberspace. "There are so many stupid, ridiculous conspiracy theories about black people not being able to get it. That's dumb, stupid. All right? That is the quickest way to get more black people killed."

Some U.S. physicians and researchers who study the intersection of race and health are joining Elba in sounding the alarm: The highly contagious and potentially deadly virus sweeping across the country is going to hit hard in the black community. And the reasons will reach beyond dangerous rumor-mongering and racially based misinformation.

The documented health disparities between racial groups in the U.S. – including higher rates of chronic diseases and lower access to health care among blacks compared with whites – make some African Americans more vulnerable to COVID-19, experts warn.

"I expect the COVID-19 pandemic to impact African Americans to a greater extent than other more socially advantaged groups," says Dr. Lisa Cooper, an internist and social epidemiologist with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "This is because as a group, African Americans in the U.S. have higher rates of poverty, housing and food insecurity, unemployment or underemployment, and chronic medical conditions, and disabilities."

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams told CBS Friday that Chicago, Detroit and New Orleans may become “hot spots” next week as their number of cases grow

CRITTENDEN COUNTY, Ark. — Crittenden County officials are investigating a bizarre murder case where the suspect is the same man accused of a double-murder more than 20 years ago at the same house where the new murder took place.

Crittenden County Sheriff Mike Allen said deputies found the back door open after being called to the Snowden House in Horseshoe Lake on Wednesday.

A man identified as 39-year-old Travis Lewis was upstairs and jumped from the window when deputies made a sweep of the home.

Lewis tried to get away in a vehicle on the property but jumped into the lake after the vehicle became stuck. Authorities said Lewis never surfaced, and his body was recovered later that day.

The homeowner Martha McKay was found dead inside Snowden House. The cause of death will be determined by the state medical examiner, Allen said.

According to authorities, Lewis spent 23 years behind bars for killing McKay’s mother Sally and and her brother Lee Baker at Snowden House back in 1996, when Lewis was 16 years old. He was paroled in 2018.

“It’s kind of like a bad dream or deja vu, like really, back to this again,” said Joe Baker, Lee Baker’s son and Martha McKay’s cousin. “For me, it speaks to some of the issues with the parole system in Arkansas.”

A neighbor told WREG on Wednesday that McKay was stabbed to death in her home. They also said the she was trying to help Lewis after he was released from prison. Deputies have not confirmed that information to WREG.

Detectives are now working to figure out why Lewis killed McKay and if anything was taken from the home. The two knew each other because, despite his conviction, McKay at one point still wanted to help Lewis.

“I think that she really felt in her heart he deserved to be rehabilitated, which I think really speaks to her character after such a tragic event happened to such a close family member,” Joe Baker said.

The family is now hoping for answers in this new investigation.

“I’m just beyond sad that it turned out this way for her,” Joe Baker said.

Investigators said up until a month ago, Lewis did work at McKay’s home but was recently banned from the property.

Lewis and McKay’s bodies will be sent to the medical examiner’s office to find out how they died.
