Tampa cops responded to a call about a woman in distress who was walking in the street with her kids ... and it turned into a gutwrenching scene of the children being ripped away from their mom.
Police got the call of a woman "under severe mental distress." When they arrived in the downtown area, they saw her walking in the road with her 5 barefoot kids.
The way police handled the situation is raising lots of questions ... in particular, whether this was the way to handle and de-escalate the situation.
You see one cop holding the woman against a fence, while one of her daughters stands by her side. Then, another cop held the girl with one hand as he restrains 3 of her brothers who are trying to free their sister from the officer.
Police eventually took the woman to a hospital for a psychological evaluation. They also took the kids to the hospital so they could be near their mom.
This is yet another example of how important it is for police to assess non-violent situations and figure out ways of de-escalating without causing needless trauma, force or worse.

Well, Donald Trump loves his white supremacists, because he just gave his stamp of approval on a protest where one of his loudest supporters is screaming "white power."
It's a bizarre demonstration/counter-demonstration ... a line of golf carts traversed streets around Sumter County, Florida with Trump supporters, as Trump protesters lined the streets.
You hear demonstrators, mostly seniors, boil over in anger ... there's no physical contact, but it's intense.
True-to-form Trump retweeted the video, saying, "Thank you to the great people of The Villages. The Radical Left Do Nothing Democrats will Fall in the Fall. Corrupt Joe is shot. See you soon!!"
Again ... one of his most vocal supporters is the guy who screams "white power" ... one of Trump's "great people." So, he's not even masking it anymore.

Nipsey Hussle's family's stuck in an odd limbo with a Crips company -- over a trademark -- and it's got them worried something shady's going on.
Sources close to the late rapper tell TMZ ... his family's legal conflict with the Crips LLC -- yes, the gang's gone corporate -- over the rights to Hussle's "The Marathon Continues" slogan has carried on, leaving family members frustrated.
Here's the deal ... the Crips organization filed a couple trademarks for the phrase in 2019 -- one for clothing and one for various services. Shortly afterward, however, it apologized and vowed to back off, saying it would not get into a legal battle with the family ... which has several 'Marathon' trademarks of its own related to Nip's clothing store.
So, it seemed like all would be well, but according to our sources ... the Crips didn't take any action to withdraw its filings, which forced Nip's family to lawyer up and file oppositions to the trademark applications.
The good news for the family ... the Crips didn't fight the opposition to the clothing trademark application by the deadline, so the application was deemed abandoned earlier this month.
There's a good chance the same thing will happen with the other application too, but we're told Crips LLC has gone silent about the issue ... which hasn't been helpful for the family.

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) - A former Miami Gardens police officer accused of using excessive for in the arrest of a pregnant woman is off the force after bonding out of jail.
Jody Martel was captured on camera using a Taser on a pregnant woman and putting his knee on her neck outside of Tootsie’s Cabaret in January.
Martel was arrested Thursday and charged with battery and official misconduct.
Thirty-two-year-old Safiya Satchell was arrested after a confrontation with Tootsie’s staff.
Martel, who worked the security detail that night, went too far according to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle.
Fernandez-Rundle said, “Martel allegedly used excessive force by putting his knee on Ms. Satchell’s neck. He went into Sacthell’s car without any evidence that she had committed a crime.”
Martel was caught on video reaching into Satchell’s car as she said back to him, “Don’t reach into my car.”
He then appeared to pull her out and use a Taser on her.
Satchell’s attorney released a statement saying in part, “The days of shuffling aside these videos of police misconduct are soon behind us as a community and a nation. We are pleased to see swift action taken by the authorities against this former officer.”
Martel has been in trouble before, appearing in a cell phone video struggling with a man in March at a Miami Gardens RaceTrac gas station.
The Miami Gardens Chief of Police called the rough arrest egregious behavior and wouldn’t be tolerated.
The video outside of Tootsie’s Cabaret included a staff member asking the person recording the incident, “Can you please delete that, sir? Can you please delete it?”
All charges against Satchell have been dropped.

Gap shares soared Friday after Kanye West shared a photo that touted his collaboration with the retailer.
Shares closed up 18.8% Friday at $12.07, but had been up as much as 40% earlier in the day. The move added more than $700 million to Gap’s market cap, pushing it to about $4.5 billion.
Gap and West are developing a clothing line for men, women and kids that will be sold in its stores and online. The retailer said in a news release that the items from his fashion brand, Yeezy, will be made up of “modern, elevated basics” sold at “accessible price points.” The new line will debut in 2021.
West is the sole owner of the Yeezy brand, Gap said in its press release.
The partnership is a ten-year agreement, a person familiar with the deal’s terms said. Gap did not disclose terms of the deal, but said Yeezy will receive royalties and may get equity based on how much it sells. Gap has issued Yeezy Supply warrants for up to 8.5 million shares depending on whether the brand meets certain sales targets, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Yeezy Supply is guaranteed the first third of those shares if annual net sales of the Gap-Yeezy line hit $250 million and the pursuant thirds if sales reach $450 million and $700 million annually. Those warrants expire 20 days after the company confirms its sales for fiscal 2025.
Following Friday’s rally, the total stake is worth more than $100 million at the current share price. In all, Yeezy Supply could have up to a 2% ownership in Gap, based off the company’s current share count.
Yeezy already has a shoe partnership with sports brand Adidas. A spokesperson for the German company declined to comment on the Gap collaboration when asked about it on Friday.
In its announcement of the deal, Gap said West’s experience working in one of its stores has come full circle.
“We are excited to welcome Kanye back to the Gap family as a creative visionary, building on the aesthetic and success of his YEEZY brand and together defining a next-level retail partnership,” Mark Breitbard, the company’s global head of brand, said in a news release.
