HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 13-year-old boy who apparently overdosed on the opioid fentanyl while in school died on Saturday.

The seventh-grade student from the Sports and Medical Science Academy in Hartford had been hospitalized since Thursday morning.

Two other students at the public school were sickened after apparently being exposed to the drug. Both recovered.

Police said the teenager died Saturday. His name has not been released because of his age.

The school was evacuated & drug-sniffing dogs were brought in to help with a thorough search of the building, officials said. During the search, police found 40 small bags containing what was determined to be powdered fentanyl. The bags were found in 2 classrooms & the gymnasium.

Police said they believe the students brought the drugs to school

The school was closed on Friday & will be closed for Martin Luther King Day on Monday while the building is wiped clean. The state Department of Public Health will notify school officials when it is deemed safe to return.

The case remains under investigation, police said.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The leader of a crime gang notorious for siphoning gasoline from government fuel ducts has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for kidnapping.

José Antonio Yépez Ortiz had been one of Mexico’s most wanted suspects prior to his arrest on Aug. 2, 2020, following a shootout with police. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador praised the arrest at the time as “important, very important.”

The gang had long fought a bloody turf battle with the Jalisco cartel & authorities blamed him for much of the violence in the industrial & farming state of Guanajuato.

The state Attorney General’s Office said late Friday that the man known as “El Marro” — which means “The Sledgehammer” — was sentenced by a court in the region. Local news media said he still faces charges of attempted homicide, robbery of fuel & organized crime.

Yépez Ortíz’s Santa Rosa de Lima gang got its start robbing freight trains & stealing from fuel pipelines but branched out into extortion & other crimes — especially after López Obrador declared war on pipeline taps & temporarily shut off the flow of fuel early in his administration.

Yépez Ortiz was unusual among gang leaders in posting videos with emotional calls to his followers, including one a few months before his own arrest in which he appeared to cry after several of his supporters & relatives were arrested. In another video around the same time, he threatened to join forces with the Sinaloa cartel to combat Jalisco.

The turf battle with Jalisco turned Guanajuato, with its foreign auto plants & tourist towns like San Miguel de Allende, into the most violent state in Mexico.

Video After The Jump

BALTIMORE (AP) — A federal grand jury indicted Baltimore’s top prosecutor Thursday on charges of perjury and making false mortgage applications in the purchase of two Florida vacation homes, the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland said.

The four-count indictment alleges that Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby lied about meeting qualifications for coronavirus-related distributions from a city retirement plan in 2020. Federal prosecutors also allege that Mosby lied on 2020 application forms for mortgages to purchase a home in Kissimmee, Florida, and a condominium in Long Boat Key, Florida.

Mosby, 41, is a high-profile prosecutor who has aligned herself with criminal-justice reformers. She rose to national prominence in 2015 when she pursued criminal charges against six police officers in the death of Freddie Gray, a Black man whose death in police custody triggered riots and protests. None of the officers were convicted.

The indictment of Mosby, who is married to Baltimore City Council President Nick Mosby, comes months after news outlets reported that federal officials subpoenaed the Maryland State Board of Elections seeking business and campaign finance records related to the couple dating back to 2014. An attorney representing the couple alleged misconduct by federal prosecutors in a letter to the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility and sought a suspension of the criminal investigation into the couple. Nick Mosby has not been charged with any crimes.

“We will fight these charges vigorously, and I remain confident that once all the evidence is presented, that she will prevail against these bogus charges — charges that are rooted in personal, political and racial animus five months from her election,” said A. Scott Bolden, Mosby’s attorney, in a statement Thursday night.

In 2020, Mosby submitted requests for one-time withdrawals of $40,000 and $50,000, respectively, from Baltimore’s deferred compensation plans, according to the indictment. It alleges that Mosby falsely certified that she experienced adverse financial hardships because of the coronavirus, but actually received her nearly $250,000 salary in 2020. The indictment also alleges that in 2020 and 2021, Mosby made false statements in applications for a $490,500 mortgage to purchase a home in Kissimmee, Florida, and for a $428,400 mortgage to purchase a condominium in Long Boat Key, Florida.

NEW YORK (AP) — Martin Shkreli must return $64.6 million in profits he and his former company reaped from raising the price of the life-saving drug Daraprim, a federal judge ruled Friday while also barring the provocative, imprisoned ex-CEO from participating in the pharmaceutical industry for the rest of his life.

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote’s ruling came several weeks after a seven-day bench trial in December. The Federal Trade Commission and seven states brought the case in 2020 against the man dubbed “Pharma Bro” in the media.

Shkreli’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Shkreli was CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals — later Vyera — when it jacked up the price of Daraprim from $13.50 to $750 per pill, after obtaining exclusive rights to the decades-old drug in 2015. It treats a rare parasitic disease that strikes pregnant women, cancer patients and AIDS patients.

He defended the decision as capitalism at work and said insurance and other programs ensured that people who need Daraprim would ultimately get it.

But the move sparked outrage from medical centers to Congress to the 2016 presidential campaign trail, where Hillary Clinton termed it price-gouging and future President Donald Trump called Shkreli “a spoiled brat.”

Shkreli eventually offered hospitals half off — still amounting to a 2,500% increase. But patients normally take most of the weekslong treatment after returning home, so they and their insurers still faced the $750-a-pill price.

He resigned as Turing’s CEO in 2015, a day after he was arrested on securities fraud charges related to hedge funds he ran before getting into the pharmaceuticals industry. He was convicted and is serving a seven-year prison sentence.

Vyera Pharmaceuticals LLC was sued in federal court in New York by the FTC and seven states: New York, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

They alleged that Vyera hiked the price of Daraprim and illegally created “a web of anticompetitive restrictions” to prevent other companies from creating cheaper generic versions by, among other things, blocking their access to a key ingredient for the medication and to data the companies would want to evaluate the drug’s market potential.

Vyera and its parent company, Phoenixus AG, settled last month, agreeing to provide up to $40 million in relief over 10 years to consumers and to make Daraprim available to any potential generic competitor at the cost of producing the drug.

Former Vyera CEO Kevin Mulleady agreed to pay $250,000 if he violates the settlement, which barred him from working for a pharmaceutical company” for seven years.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man who is believed to have faked his death and fled the U.S. to evade prosecution in Utah & other states has been apprehended in Scotland after being hospitalized with COVID-19.

Nicholas Alahverdian was discovered after developing a serious case of the coronavirus & being placed on a ventilator at a hospital in Glasgow.

Alahverdian, 34, who had been a vocal critic of Rhode Island’s child welfare system in recent years, now faces extradition to the U.S. to face a charge of first-degree rape in Utah.

Court documents unsealed Thursday show Alahverdian met a 21-year-old woman on MySpace in 2008, when he was living in Orem, Utah, & going by the name Nicholas Rossi.

The woman said that she ended the relationship, but that Alahverdian owed her money, promised to pay her back & instead sexually assaulted her in his apartment.

Utah County Attorney David Leavitt’s office said Wednesday that DNA evidence collected at the time wasn’t tested until 2017 as part of a state effort to test backlogged rape kits. The Utah evidence was ultimately came back as a match to a sexual assault case in Ohio.

“Investigators also learned that Nicholas Rossi had fled the country to avoid prosecution in Ohio & attempted to lead investigators & state legislators in other states to believe that he was deceased,” Leavitt’s office said in a statement. “Mr. Rossi was discovered to be living under an assumed name in Scotland.”

Rhode Island State Police have also said he is wanted in that state for failing to register as a sex offender, while the FBI have said he is also wanted in his home state of Ohio on charges he took out credit cards in his foster father’s name & amassed more than $200,000 in debts.

It’s not clear whether Alahverdian has a lawyer; an email seeking comment was sent to the “Alahverdian Family Office,” which had sent a notice in 2020 about his funeral and memorial service at a church in Providence, Rhode Island.

In 2020, he told local media outlets he had late-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma and had weeks to live, The Journal reported.

An obituary published online claimed he died Feb. 29, 2020, but by last year, Rhode Island state police, Alahverdian’s former lawyer & former foster family were publicly questioning whether he actually died.

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — Bond was set at $5 million Wednesday for an Illinois woman whose 6-year-old son died after being placed in a cold shower as punishment for misbehavior.

The Lake County Coroner's Office in northwest Indiana conducted the postmortem examination on Damari Perry on Monday morning after the FBI found the boy's body early Saturday, the coroner's office said.

The autopsy found "scattered ecchymosis on the right leg, extremely cold core temperature, and partially frozen internal organs," the coroner's office said, adding that there was "postmortem thermal injury/charring" on the child's body.

Jannie Perry, 38, of North Chicago, was charged Saturday with first-degree murder in the death of Damari Perry.

A $5 million arrest warrant was issued for Perry Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney Lindsay Hicks asked that Perry’s bail remain at that amount. Lake County Judge Raymond Collins granted that request, Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said.

“We believe that the court made the right decision with respect to this defendant’s bond & custody status,” Rinehart said after the bond hearing.

When asked by the judge if she planned to hire a private attorney, Perry replied “eventually,” but that for now she needed representation by the Lake County Public Defender’s Office.

Perry also faces charges of concealing a homicidal death & obstructing justice.

One of her sons, Jeremiah Perry, 20, was charged with aggravated battery causing great harm to a child under 12, concealing a homicidal death & obstructing justice. His bond was set at $3 million Sunday, Rinehart said.

The Lake County, Indiana, Coroner’s Office said Tuesday in a pending cause of death that Damari died of hypothermia.

The TikTok community has lost a rising star.

Rory Teasley, a content creator known as @too2pump4tv on the social media platform, was allegedly choked to death on Jan. 6 after an argument with his boyfriend of 10 years, Docquen Jovo Watkins, according to a press release from the Office of the Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard in Oakland County, Mich.

Police alleged that Teasley, 28, and Watkins, 31, got into a dispute while playing Overwatch, a team-based shooter game, at a residence in Pontiac. Officers responded to the scene shortly before midnight over a report of a domestic assault and found Teasley unconscious and not breathing.

According to authorities, Watkins had called 911 and told police that his boyfriend was "sleeping" on the couch after the fight.

Teasley was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed to E! News that Teasley died of asphyxia & neck compression & his manner of death was ruled as a homicide.

Watkins was arrested on a second-degree murder charge & was arraigned on Jan. 9, according to police. A probable cause conference has been set for Jan. 18, while a preliminary examination is scheduled for Jan. 25.

Online records show that he is currently being held without bond at the Oakland County Jail.

At the time of his death, Teasley had amassed over 220,000 followers on his TikTok account, which featured dance & comedy videos.
