HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 13-year-old boy who apparently overdosed on the opioid fentanyl while in school died on Saturday.

The seventh-grade student from the Sports and Medical Science Academy in Hartford had been hospitalized since Thursday morning.

Two other students at the public school were sickened after apparently being exposed to the drug. Both recovered.

Police said the teenager died Saturday. His name has not been released because of his age.

The school was evacuated & drug-sniffing dogs were brought in to help with a thorough search of the building, officials said. During the search, police found 40 small bags containing what was determined to be powdered fentanyl. The bags were found in 2 classrooms & the gymnasium.

Police said they believe the students brought the drugs to school

The school was closed on Friday & will be closed for Martin Luther King Day on Monday while the building is wiped clean. The state Department of Public Health will notify school officials when it is deemed safe to return.

The case remains under investigation, police said.
