Video After The Jump

NEW YORK (Associated Press) — A doctor who became New York City's first Ebola patient was praised for getting treatment immediately upon showing symptoms, and health officials stressed that the nation's most populous city need not fear his wide-ranging travel in the days before his illness began.

12351190881?profile=original

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged residents not to be alarmed by the doctor's diagnosis Thursday, even as they described him riding the subway, taking a cab and bowling since returning to New York from Guinea a week ago. De Blasio said all city officials followed "clear and strong" protocols in their handling and treatment of him.

"We want to state at the outset that New Yorkers have no reason to be alarmed," de Blasio said. "New Yorkers who have not been exposed are not at all at risk."

The doctor, Craig Spencer, a member of Doctors Without Borders, reported Thursday morning coming down with a 100.3-degree fever and diarrhea. He was being treated in an isolation ward at Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital, a designated Ebola center.

12351191269?profile=original

Craig Spencer

In appearance on CNN on Friday morning, the governor said Spencer "presented himself" to the hospital when he had a 100-point-3 fever ... not 103 ... as has been reported."

New York City's health department on Friday confirmed that the doctor's temperature was 100.3.

Cuomo said Friday that the doctor "obviously felt he wasn't symptomatic" when he went out "in a limited way."

"When you're a doctor you know you're not contagious until you're symptomatic," Cuomo said on NBC's Today show. "As soon as he had a fever he presented himself to a hospital."

The governor, in an appearance on CNN's New Day, said there was no reason to fear riding the subway, and he would do so Friday.

One commuter said he first learned of New York's first Ebola case on the subway on his way to work Friday morning.

It's "a scary thing" because there are "a lot of germs in New York," said Chris Thompson who was riding the L train, one of the lines Spencer rode after returning home from West Africa.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which will do a further test to confirm the initial results, has dispatched an Ebola response team to New York. President Barack Obama spoke to Cuomo and de Blasio on Thursday night and offered the federal government's support. He asked them to stay in close touch with Ron Klain, his "Ebola czar," and public health officials in Washington.

12351191464?profile=original

Health officials have been tracing Spencer's contacts to identify anyone who may be at risk. The city's health commissioner, Mary Bassett, said Spencer's fiancee and two friends had been quarantined but showed no symptoms.

Health officials say the chances of the average New Yorker contracting Ebola, which is spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, are slim. Someone can't be infected just by being near someone who is sick with Ebola. Someone isn't contagious unless he is sick.

Belkys Fortune, Teressa Celia

Bassett said the probability was "close to nil" that Spencer's subway rides would pose a risk. Still, the bowling alley was closed as a precaution, and Spencer's Harlem apartment was cordoned off. The Department of Health was on site across the street from the apartment building Thursday night, giving out information to area residents.

Still, the news rankled some New Yorkers. "Oh my gosh!" said Charles Kerr, 60, as his friends gathered on a Harlem sidewalk murmured. "This changes the situation. The guy must be coughing, sitting against people. Now you've got to think."

Kerr said he wasn't afraid, but he wants a stricter approach to anyone coming from the Ebola-affected countries.

"Stay in their apartment," he said. "Especially now, when it's so rampant. Especially if they know they've been in contact."

The epidemic in West Africa has killed about 4,800 people. In the United States, the first person diagnosed with the disease was a Liberian man, who fell ill days after arriving in Dallas and later died, becoming the only fatality. None of his relatives who had contact with him got sick. Two nurses who treated him were infected and are hospitalized. The family of one nurse said doctors no longer could detect Ebola in her as of Tuesday evening.

According to a rough timeline provided by city officials, in the days before Spencer fell ill, he went on a 3-mile jog, went to the High Line park, rode the subway and, on Wednesday night, got a taxi to a Brooklyn bowling alley. He felt tired starting Tuesday, and felt worse on Thursday when he and his fiancee made a joint call to authorities to detail his symptoms and his travels. EMTs in full Ebola gear arrived and took him to Bellevue in an ambulance surrounded by police squad cars.

ephoto1.jpg

Doctors Without Borders, an international humanitarian organization, said per the guidelines it provides its staff members on their return from Ebola assignments, "the individual engaged in regular health monitoring and reported this development immediately." Travelers from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone must report in with health officials daily and take their temperature twice a day, as Spencer did. He also limited his direct contact with people, health officials said.

Spencer, 33, works at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. He had not seen any patients or been to the hospital since his return, the hospital said in a statement, calling him a "dedicated humanitarian" who "went to an area of medical crisis to help a desperately underserved population."

Four American aid workers, including three doctors, were infected with Ebola while working in Africa and were transferred to the U.S. for treatment in recent months. All recovered. Health care workers are vulnerable because of close contact with patients when they are their sickest and most contagious.

In West Africa this year, more than 440 health workers have contracted Ebola and about half have died. But the Ebola virus is not very hardy. The CDC says bleach and other hospital disinfectants kill it. Dried virus on surfaces survives only for several hours.

Ebola-in-West-Africa---Ebola-outbreak-graphic-jpg.jpg

Spencer is from Michigan and attended Wayne State University School of Medicine and Columbia's University Mailman School of Public Health.

According to his Facebook page, he left for West Africa via Brussels last month. A photo shows him in full protective gear. He returned to Brussels Oct. 16.

"Off to Guinea with Doctors Without Borders," he wrote. "Please support organizations that are sending support or personnel to West Africa, and help combat one of the worst public health and humanitarian disasters in recent history."

Video After The Jump Boxing fans love to debate which fighter is the greatest of all time. In such debates, people generally up end going old school vs new school. For most though, Muhammad Ali has been considered the greatest and most well known boxer of all time. Manny Pacquiao's advisor Michael Koncz doesn't think that is the case anymore. At least not when it comes to popularity. He tells reporter Elie Seckbach that Pac Man is now the biggest name boxing has ever seen. "I think it's all the things we've been doing. 60 Minutes programs, you know - 24-7 again. It's put him into that category of a rock star," Koncz said "I think he's one of the most popular boxers ever, even more than Ali. You gotta remember Muhammad Ali, and he was my favorite boxer. He never became world wide famous until the draft issue, it wasn't because of his boxing. [Ali was convicted for refusing induction into the military]. And I think that's what's happening to Manny too. Like I said with 60 Minutes, the Dateline show that we did, the Jimmy Kimmel show that we did twice. We're taking him out of the boxing circle and putting him into the household." Koncz makes some interesting points, but Ali became worldwide famous without the internet, pay-per-view, Showtime and HBO. I think that's a really hard comparison to make. In other Pacquiao news, it's looking more and more likely that his next opponent will be either Sugar Shane Mosely or Andre Berto. Juan Manuel Marquez was also in the running, but promotor Bob Arum said his asking price was way too high. “Marquez's proposal was so out of line for anything that he got before… I don't think Manny is going to pay any attention to it,” Arum said in an interview with FanHouse.com On the possibility of Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Pacquiao, it doesn't look like that fight will happen until at least the end of 2011, if at all. Oscar De La Hoya of Floyd's promotion team Golden Boy is accusing Arum of ducking his fighter. Arum is calling bullsh*t on that accusation. "That's totally nonsense because you can argue over the first situation, the first go around. They had one position, we had another. But on the second go around we gave in to every one of their positions. We were so anxious to make the fight and Mayweather didn't want to fight," Arum said "And even today we will do the fight unconditionally, unconditionally! And all Mayweather has to do is say ('yes') he wants the fight." So our poll for today is, who is the greatest fighter of all time? Use whatever criteria you want to - popularity, pay-per-view buys etc But the most important thing in determining the greatest is boxing skills.

Reporter Elie Seckbach always has good interviews and gets information that isn't generally known to the public.

In his interview with Ron Artest, he revealed that Manny Pacquia's trainer, Freddie Roach speaks highly of the NBA star's boxing skills and that Ron trains regularly.

Ron Ron talked about his dreams of one day getting in the ring.

"I would love to be trained by Freddie Roach, coming under Manny Pacquiao and maybe having a fight. Somebody on my level, not that much better, I don't wanna get knocked out cold."

Somehow I can't imagine anybody knocking Ron out. He also talked about Don King possibly stepping in to replace Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, to negotiate on Floyd Mayweather Jr's behalf for the Pacquiao fight.

"When I first heard of that fight I thought Don King, I said Don King should promote Mayweather instead of Oscar because Don King has that loud voicde and he always talks a lot of trash. All the funny vocabulary words. Everybody and their mama knows Don King is gonna say something crazy."

Ron is really a funny dude, he says he's running for President in the next election against Barack Obama. Ron says that instead of debates he's gonna get at Barack with some bars rhyming. And everybody will have to where t-shirts with the words "What's Popppin" in the from including the Secretary Of Defense".

Ron had a message for Manny at the end of the first video peep game and hear what it was,

For some strange reason, a fight that stands to earn Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr a reported $30 million dollars apiece has not yet been made.

Negotiations have twice stalled. Well, according to Mayweather's camp there was never a second negotiation while Pacquiao's camp insists there was.

Initially, the fight couldn't be made because Mayweather insisted on Olympic style drug testing. The sticking point came down to how close to the fight, the blood testing would cease.

Unable to agree, both fighters moved on to other opponents. Pac Man easily beat Joshua Clottey while Mayweather disposed of Sugar Shane Mosely.

Now it starting to look like Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Mayweather is having trouble negotiating with Bob Arum, who is Pacquiao's promoter.

Out of nowhere, an unlikely name has popped up, and it just might be the best thing for all involved except for Golden Boy. Veteran promoter Don King has been cozying up to Mayweather.

According to ESPN, Floyd recently spent some time with King while in Florida looking for a new crib.

"I love Floyd. Floyd's my man," said King. "He'll get the soup to nuts treatment [if he signs]. He was down there with me for a week in Florida. He's buyin' him a nice place down there. And so it's no downside with me with Floyd because the people that have him, they gonna give him more money to keep him away from me if he stays with them. If he comes with me, he'll have a whole new vista, a whole new arena that he can play on. I can get more money than anyone out there. They can't stop that."

King is 100% sure he can make this fight happen right away.

"Me and Bob would get that fight done in two shakes of a lamb's tail," King said. "If I was there working with Bob Arum, this fight would have been history. It'd be ready now and we'd be talking about how we gonna promote. It wouldn't be nothing put a piece of cake. But even then it would be so much bigger that what it would be if he were to make with Golden Boy or Al [Haymon]. They cannot make the fight as big as Arum and I can make it. They are not in the class of a Bob Arum."

This is great news to Pacquiao, who has grown tired of waiting for the fight to happen. He is ready to take the blood tests and lace the gloves up now. He is even willing to push aside his fight with Antonio Margarito to make it happen as early as November 13 according to BoxingScene.com.

"I hope Mayweather is serious enough in doing business with Don King and is not doing this only to save face. I hope Don King does the same in return, that he can make miracles happen. I say this to both these men: Let's Get It On. Fight like warriors and brave men," Pacquiao said.

"I am the champion, I have the belts and I should not be the one challenging you. I should not even be the one trying to make this fight happen. But Pacquiao vs Mayweather is what everyone wants, that's why I am calling out your names. My promoter Bob Arum will be waiting for your call and will be very glad to hear what you have to say. The sooner, the better..."

Now that's what every fight fan wants to hear, now let's get it!

Arizona's controversial new anti-immigration law SB 1070 continues to draw boycotts and protests.

Kanye West has joined a protest being organized by Zach de la Rocha of Rage Against The Machine dubbed "The Sound Strike".

The protest movement is growing larger as artists refuse to perform in Arizona as long as the law is in place. Singer Shakira was recently in Phoenix speaking with Mayor Phil Gordon and other government officials to discuss the controversial legislation.

Pitbull and Cypress Hill recently canceled shows there and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Disturbing Tha Peace artist Willy Northpole just released a new video "Back To Mexico" as a show of solidarity between blacks and mexicans.

Sonic Youth, Joe Satriani, Massive Attack, Tenacious D, film maker Michael Moore and many others are participating.

De la Rocha sent out a press release on Tuesday (May 25) that read in part.

"Fans of our music, our stories, our films and our words can be pulled over and harassed every day because they are brown or black, or for the way they speak, or for the music they listen to. People who are poor like some of us used to be could be forced to live in a constant state of fear while just doing what they can to find work and survive. This law opens the door for them to be shaked down, or even worse, detained and deported while just trying to travel home from school, from home to work, or when they just roll out with their friends.

Some of us grew up dealing with racial profiling, but this law (SB 1070) takes it to a whole new low. If other states follow the direction of the Arizona government, we could be headed towards a pre-civil rights era reality. This unjust law was set into motion by the same Arizona government that refused to acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr. day as a national holiday."

SB 1070 allows police officers to stop and question people they "reasonably suspect" of being in the United States illegally.

To read more on the protest and see the full list of artists participating and sign the petition go to www.thesoundstrike.net.

L.A. Times Reports Reporting from Washington - Rio de Janeiro has won the right to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, a decision that will set the games in South America for the first time. "In every competition, there can only be one winner," said Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee. Today's announcement dashes the hopes of U.S. boosters -- President Obama chief among them -- who had put their reputations on the line to help win the games for Chicago. Word came from the IOC as the president and the first lady headed back to Washington, hours after making a last-minute appeal in Copenhagen for their hometown. Their rival in the campaign, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, asked the Olympic panel to choose a country that has never gotten to host the Games. "The opportunity now is to expand the Games to new continents," Lula told the panel in his presentation. "Light the caldron in a tropical country, in the most beautiful of cities. Send a powerful message to the world that the Olympic Games belong to all people, all continents, and to all humanity." Chicago's elimination was one of the more shocking defeats in IOC voting history. The city had long been viewed as a front-runner. But the emotional appeals from Obama and his wife, Michelle fell on deaf ears in the European-dominated IOC. The IOC's last two experiences in the United States were marred by controversy: The 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics were sullied by a bribery scandal and logistical problems, and a bombing marred the 1996 Games in Atlanta. U.S. officials in Copenhagen did not immediately comment, and the word was greeted with stunned confusion and disappointment in Chicago, where thousands had gathered in Daley Plaza to hear the news. In the final days of the campaign, Chicago's bid appeared to be gathering both momentum and clout. As it made its way to Copenhagen, the city's delegation picked up travelers from the U.S. Senate and the Obama Cabinet. When Obama himself decided to go, it seemed like the wind was behind the U.S. bid. No one has better vote-counters than the president, and political wisdom held that he wouldn't stick his neck out if there weren't a very good chance of a win. In the wake of the announcement today, though, his top aides were at a loss for answers. "I'm sure there will be quite a bit of postmortems done on this," said David Axelrod, the president's senior political advisor, appearing on CNN, calling himself too "engrossed" in fathoming the politics of Washington to get involved in the politics in Copenhagen.

Darcel De Vlugt DailyMail UK Reports Her skin is so pale that she wears Factor 100 sun cream on even a dull summer day. Yet, incredibly, 23-year-old Darcel de Vlugt was born black. In a case of extreme rarity, the skin condition vitiligo has taken the pigment from her entire body. Experts say they have never come across such a striking change and she says: 'I have a hard job convincing people that I was actually born with dark skin.' Darcel's parents Peter and Charmaine, both from Trinidad, noticed white spots on her forearm and forehead when she was five. Doctors diagnosed vitiligo, the same condition said to have affected Michael Jackson. By the age of seven, white patches had appeared on her legs along with white spots on the rest of her body.

Darcel Age Seven These gradually grew bigger until, when she was 17, the transformation was complete. 'My father worked for the United Nations and we travelled the world a lot with his job,' said Darcel, now a fashion designer in London. 'My family believe the stress of moving at such a young age brought on the condition. None of my direct family have ever suffered with the condition, although several relatives by marriage have had it in a less serious form than me. ‘When I was first diagnosed at the age of five, we didn’t take it too seriously. The doctor gave me medication to try and stop it spreading, and we thought that it wouldn’t get any worse.' But by the age of seven, white patches had started to appear on Miss De Vlugt’s legs, and then by the time she was nine, it had spread up her arms too. A year later it had started to spread up her neck and up to her nose. She said: ‘We tried all the treatment we could to try and stop it spreading, but nothing seemed to work. The doctors told me to sunbathe for ten minutes each day which I did for a year, then I took medication for five years. 'At the age of 12 I tried UV laser treatment, but it didn't work and by then, 80 per cent of my body was white so I decided to leave it. There was nothing I could do.’ Vitiligo causes the immune system to attack the pigment cells which give skin its colour. It affects one person in 100 of any age, race or colour although it is normally more noticeable in those with naturally dark skin. Darcel has a brother Dion, 29, who is unaffected. Their father still works for the UN and is now based in Africa. Because it has no melanin, Darcel's skin is vulnerable to sunburn, and she has to constantly wear suncream with a sun protection factor of 100. She said: ‘I was very badly burnt at the age of nine, to the extent where my skin looked like it had been burnt in a fire. ‘I was covered in fluid filled blisters and it took weeks to heal. It was so painful.’

Darcel's Parents, Peter And Charmaine Miss De Vlugt was given the option of bleaching the remainder of her skin as her body started to change colour, but she decided against it. She said: ‘I believe that Michael Jackson had vitiligo and had patches of it on his body, then he bleached the rest so it had an even look. ‘But I didn’t want to bleach it as it would mean it was irreversible, and I had hoped that all the treatments I had been having would work instead. ‘But now my body is completely white all over, with not a patch of brown left, so I wouldn’t have needed to bleach any remaining skinanyway.’ Last month in the Mail, Luke Davis described how he had changed from black to white apart from a circular patch on his back. But a spokesman for the Vitiligo Society said it was 'extremely unusual' for the entire body to change colour.
