PHOENIX (AP) — A man ambushed a police officer who responded to a call at a Phoenix home early Friday, shooting him several times, then rained more gunfire on other officers who tried to rescue a baby that was placed outside the door.

In all, 5 officers were shot, including 4 who were wounded while trying to take the baby to safety. Four more officers were injured by shrapnel or ricocheting bullets, Phoenix Police Sgt. Andy Williams said.

“I hate to speculate, but it sounds like I’d be pretty safe to say nine is going to be the highest number we’ve ever had injured in one day, in one incident,” Williams said.

All were expected to survive & the baby was unharmed.

Video from the scene shows another man coming outside holding a baby and a satchel. The man put the satchel on the ground and then laid down the infant, wrapped in a blanket, between the satchel and the front door. He raised his hands to surrender while backing away from the house.

Other officers who responded approached the doorway, and the suspect fired more shots. The police returned fire, which then led the suspect to barricade himself. Eight of the officers were wounded by bullets or shrapnel in that exchange.

The suspect remained barricaded for several hours & was later found dead inside the home. A woman at the home also was critically injured. They didn’t specify how the suspect died.

The man who brought the baby outside suffered non-life-threatening injuries. “No information suggests that he’s part of the ambush, but it’s an ongoing investigation,” Williams said.

QUINCY (WGEM) - The decision by Adams County Judge Robert Adrian to reverse his own conviction of a man accused in the criminal sexual assault of a Quincy girl has ignited a firestorm of criticism.

Speaking out for the first time Tuesday, 16-year-old Cameron Vaughan said 18-year-old Drew Clinton sexually assaulted her at a graduation party on May 30.

“I woke up at my friend’s place with a pillow over my face so I couldn’t be heard and Drew Clinton inside of me,” she said. “I asked him to stop multiple times and he wouldn’t. I finally got off the couch and pushed him off of me and he jumped up and just started playing video games as if nothing had happened.”

During a bench trial in October, Adrian convicted Clinton of one count of criminal sexual assault.

At a sentencing last week, however, Adrian reversed himself following a pair of motions by Clinton’s attorney, saying that a mandatory minimum sentence imposed by state statute would be inappropriate.

Adrian said that the 5 months Clinton had served in the Adams County Jail was enough.

“For what happened in this case, that is plenty of punishment,” Adrian said.

During the hearing, Adrian also had harsh criticism for parents at the party where the alleged assault happened, lambasting them for letting minors drink and swim in the pool in only their underwear.

Assistant State’s Attorney Anita Rodriguez prosecutes sex crimes for the county. She told the Herald-Whig she has never seen anything like the decision in her 40-year career.

“My heart is bleeding for the victim,” Rodriguez told the newspaper. “It was a very difficult bench trial. It did a lot for her healing process, but now she’s back to where we were at.”

Vaughan said hearing Adrian’s decision was devastating.

“I immediately had to leave the courtroom and go to the bathroom. I was crying,” she said.

Her father, Scott, said the seven-month ordeal has been devastating for daughter.

“She was a cross-country runner, she ran in track, she was an honor roll student,” he said. “Now, she’s lucky to carry a C average and she’s dropped out of all sports. All of her learning is at home now. She can’t go to school.”

“Operation Boo Dat 2021 took place from mid-October to Dec. 24. Among the 30 people arrested were 17 for felony sex offender registration violations,” KNOE reported Wednesday.

The missing and runaway teenagers, ages 14 through 16, were discovered living in different motels and residences where alleged criminal activity was happening.

“They were found with or had recently been with adult males and are thought to be the victims of sex trafficking, a common fate among runaway teens who do not soon make it home,” the KNOE article read.

Those arrested included a man who allegedly raped a 12-year-old.

Sex trafficking is when a person is compelled by force, fraud, or coercion to engage in commercial sex acts, according the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) website.

“Sex trafficking of a minor occurs when the victim is under the age of 18. For cases involving minors, it is not necessary to prove force, fraud, or coercion,” the agency said.

A Wisconsin man was arrested & accused of driving a red SUV into a crowd at a Waukesha Christmas parade on the city's Main Street, as revelers watched in horror.

Darrell Brooks, 39, was booked on suspicion of five counts of intentional homicide.

The victims were women aged 79, 71, 52 and 52, and a man, 81, was also killed. 48 people were injured, including 2 children in critical condition.

Brooks, a local rapper who goes by the name Mathboi Fly, was involved in a domestic incident involving a knife before the crash, but it’s not clear who the victim was.

Brooks had fled scene of that domestic incident just as officers were arriving & then got redirected to the parade.

An officer opened fire on the SUV but quickly stopped shooting, believing there were too many people nearby. No was was hit by gunfire.

On Monday, the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office released a summary of pending charges against Brooks, which include charges of second-degree recklessly endangering safety & felon in possession of a firearm from July 2020.

Video After The Jump

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) — A joyous scene of marching bands and children dancing in Santa hats and waving pompoms turned deadly in an instant, as an SUV sped through barricades and into a Christmas parade in suburban Milwaukee, killing at least five people and injuring more than 40 others.

One video showed a woman screaming, “Oh my God!” repeatedly as a group of young dancers was struck Sunday. A father talked of going “from one crumpled body to the other” in search of his daughter. Members of a “Dancing Grannies” club were among those hit.

The city of Waukesha posted on its social media accounts late Sunday that it could confirm at least five died and more than 40 were injured, while noting that it was still collecting information. The city’s statement also noted that many people took themselves to hospitals. The city did not release any additional information about those who died.

A “person of interest” was in custody, Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson said, but he gave no details about the person or any possible motive. The investigation was ongoing, with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

“What took place in Waukesha today is sickening, and I have every confidence that those responsible will be brought to justice,” Attorney General Josh Kaul, the state’s top law enforcement officer, tweeted.

The horror was recorded by the city’s livestream and onlookers’ cellphones. One video shows the moment the SUV broke through the barricades and the sound of what appears to be several gunshots. Thompson said a Waukesha police officer fired his gun to try to stop the vehicle. No bystanders were injured by the gunfire, and Thompson said he did not know if the driver was struck by the officer’s bullets.

Another video shows a young child dancing in the street as the SUV speeds by, just a few feet from her, before it hurtles into parade participants a few hundred feet ahead. One video, of dancers with pompoms, ends with a group of people tending to a girl on the ground.

“There were pompoms and shoes and spilled hot chocolate everywhere. I had to go from one crumpled body to the other to find my daughter,” Corey Montiho, a Waukesha school district board member, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “My wife and two daughters were almost hit. Please pray for everybody. Please pray.”

The Milwaukee Dancing Grannies posted on its Facebook page early Monday that some of its members were among the dead. The group’s profile describes them as a “group of grannies that meet once a week to practice routines for summer and winter parades.”

“Our group was doing what they loved, performing in front of crowds in a parade putting smiles on faces of all ages, filling them with joy and happiness,” the post said.

“Those who died were extremely passionate Grannies. Their eyes gleamed ... joy of being a Grannie. They were the glue ... held us together.”

A Catholic priest, multiple parishioners and Waukesha Catholic schoolchildren were among those injured, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee spokeswoman Sandra Peterson said.

Chris Germain, co-owner of the Aspire Dance Center studio, had about 70 people in the parade ranging from as young as 2 being pulled in wagons to age 18. Germain, whose 3-year-old daughter was in the parade, said he was driving at the head of their entry when he saw a maroon SUV that “just blazed right past us.” A police officer ran past in chase. Germain said he jumped out of his own SUV and gathered the girls who were with him to safety.

Then he walked forward to see the damage.

“There were small children laying all over the road, there were police officers and EMTs doing CPR on multiple members of the parade,” he said.

The parade, held each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, is sponsored by the city’s Chamber of Commerce. This year’s, the 59th, had the theme of “comfort and joy.”

Waukesha is a western suburb of Milwaukee, and about 55 miles north of Kenosha, where Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted Friday of charges stemming from the shooting of three men during unrest in that city in August 2020.

LYNN, Mass. (AP) — A white Massachusetts woman has pleaded guilty to assault and civil rights charges and been sentenced to probation for driving her car toward 3 Black women & their & children outside a cookie shop & yelling racial slurs at them, prosecutors said.

Rhonda Wozniak, 61, of Lynn, was sentenced Tuesday in Lynn District Court to 9 months of probation in the encounter in the parking lot of a Swampscott cookie shop. She was also ordered to perform 40 hours of community service & stay away from the victims.

The women & the children, who ranged in age from 5 to 12, were returning to their cars after visiting the shop on the evening of July 28, 2020, when Wozniak “came speeding toward them in her motor vehicle, nearly hitting them,” according to the prosecution’s account.

When 1 of the women asked her to slow down, Wozniak shouted racial insults & slurs “& told them to go back where they belong,” prosecutors said.

“The defendant’s action were harmful & offensive, not only to the victims, but also to the community at large,” prosecutors said.

Wozniak was identified through her vehicle’s license plate, which was captured on video by 1 of the victims & on surveillance video from a business.

Wozniak’s attorneys, Doug Ryan and Joe Simons, said in a statement that they had been preparing for a trial but that their client “ultimately decided to plead guilty & in exchange was sentenced to probation.”

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A man convicted of killing nine people in arson fires in his neighborhood was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole for each death.

Judge Christine Croce also ordered that Stanley Ford, of Akron, serve the terms consecutively.

Ford, 62, has maintained his innocence. He was found guilty Sept. 21 of 26 of the 29 counts against him, including aggravated murder and aggravated arson. A jury recommended this month that he be sentenced to life in prison instead of the death penalty, although the judge had the final say.

Besides the life terms for the murders, Croce also imposed an additional 21-year sentence for attempted aggravated murder with a violent offender specification.

Ford did not speak at the sentencing. His lawyer — who asked the judge Tuesday to not impose consecutive terms — said Ford plans to appeal the sentence.

Summit County prosecutors said Ford killed a couple in 2016 and two adults and five children in 2017. They used surveillance video footage, security alarm records and the testimony of neighbors to show Ford was responsible.

Prosecutors said Ford set the fires because of disputes with his neighbors. Ford’s attorney argued at trial that his client could not be identified in the surveillance videos and added that other potential suspects were identified.

Ford’s initial trial began in March 2020. After a week of testimony and several delays, Summit County Judge Christine Croce declared a mistrial the following June at the request of Ford’s attorneys, who cited concerns about Ford’s ability to get a fair trial during the coronavirus pandemic.

CHICAGO (AP) — Five alleged gang members have been indicted on murder charges in last year’s shooting death of a Chicago rapper that prosecutors say was part of ongoing violence over gang territories on the city’s South Side.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago said in a news release that the O-Block gang gunned down Carlton Weekly, aka “FBG Duck,” in August 2020 in the Gold Coast neighborhood, & “claimed responsibility for acts of violence in Chicago & used social media & music to increase their criminal enterprise.”

Charged with committing murder in aid of racketeering, assault in the aid of racketeering & various weapons charges are Chicago residents Charles Liggins, 30, aka "C Murda"; Kenneth Roberson, 28, aka "Kenny Mac"; Tacarlos Offerd, 30, aka "Los"; Christopher Thomas, 22, aka "C Thang"; & Marcus Smart, 22, aka "Muwop."

Liggins, Offerd, Thomas & Smart entered pleas of not guilty & the judge ordered that they remain in custody pending detention hearings. Roberson was not in court & the U.S. Attorney’s Office said his initial hearing was not scheduled.

Weekly was standing outside a store on Oak Street in broad daylight when two men climbed from two vehicles, opened fire, then climbed back into the vehicles & drove off. Weekly was killed & a woman & another man were injured. Police said it appeared to be a “targeted” attack on either Weekly or another man nearby. The Chicago Tribune reported that police determined the 26-year-old Weekly may have been targeted because days earlier he had made a video in which he disparaged rival gang members who had died.

Liggins, Offerd, Thomas & Smart were arrested Wednesday morning & Roberson was already in custody in Cook County Jail.

The federal murder count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison and a maximum sentence of the death penalty.

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — An international police operation has seized 5.73 tons of cocaine with a street value estimated at around $232 million on a yacht in the Atlantic Ocean, authorities said Monday.

Portuguese police said the shipment was one of the largest hauls in Europe in recent years and the biggest in Portugal for 15 years.

Police backed by Portuguese navy and air force units located and intercepted a 79-foot yacht at sea, a statement said. They boarded it and found 183 bales of cocaine on board.

Police suspect the cocaine belonged to an international drug-trafficking gang that was bringing cocaine into Europe through the Iberian Peninsula.

Three men were arrested and taken to Portugal.

The operation involved police from Portugal, Spain, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency.

Authorities said they would release further details of the operation later Monday.

UFC lightweight fighter Luis Pena has been arrested for the second time in five months.

Pena was taken into custody on Saturday in Deerfield Beach, Florida, on charges of battery causing bodily harm & battery domestic violence. He is being held on $1,000 bond at the Broward County Detention Center.

Deerfield Beach deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at about 12:34 a.m. Saturday.

"On scene, deputies made contact with multiple subjects & Luis Antonio Pena was later detained & taken into custody."

Pena, 28, was arrested in June on charges of robbery by sudden snatching, battery & criminal mischief after a fight with his girlfriend.

The robbery by sudden snatching charge has been dropped, but Pena is still facing charges of battery & criminal mischief in Florida's Palm Beach County. Both of those charges are misdemeanors & Pena has a court date scheduled for Oct. 28. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

On Aug. 30, Pena's girlfriend filed an affidavit in the June case requesting the charges be dismissed & that she does not desire the case be prosecuted any further.

The UFC has released fighter Luis Pena following two arrests related to domestic violence since June.

In a statement provided to ESPN through a spokesperson, the UFC said it is aware of the "disturbing allegations" regarding Pena's arrest Saturday on two charges of battery & thinks that Pena's personal & legal issues should be his focus before he competes again.

"At this time, UFC believes Mr. Pena needs to deal with the health & legal issues in front of him & consequently has informed Mr. Pena's management that his promotional agreement has been terminated," the statement read.

The statement added that Pena "has been open about his struggles with mental health & substance abuse issues" & the UFC has "on multiple occasions attempted to help him get professional treatment."

Pena, 28, was arrested Saturday on charges of battery causing bodily harm & battery domestic violence, both misdemeanors, according to a Broward County (Florida) Sheriff's Office spokesperson. He was released on $6,000 bond on Monday.

Pena also was arrested in June on domestic violence-related charges. Following that arrest, sources said the UFC went as far as to advance Pena a sum of money in the five figures to help him get treatment.

In his latest arrest over the weekend, Pena is being accused of striking his girlfriend in the face multiple times with a closed fist & continuing to hit her while she was on the ground. Pena also allegedly struck another woman who attempted to intervene in the left eye with a closed fist.

"This was a bad case," UFC president Dana White said Tuesday. "We knew that he had problems before that we were trying to help him with. And this is a pretty nasty one. I don't know if you guys read the police report, but yeah. This one had to happen."

Pena is 9-3 as a pro MMA fighter with a 5-3 UFC record.

Video After The Jump

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A man wanted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend assaulted her in May and threatened to kill her last month, according to court documents.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office issued an arrest warrant for 29-year-old Cameron Davis for the murder of Ryniscia Sanford.

The 27-year-old mother of five was shot multiple times at an apartment complex on Cypress Station in north Harris County Thursday morning. Witnesses said the two had been arguing.

Sanford's mother told ABC13 their relationship was back and forth and that Davis had been violent towards her for months.

"When I came to live with her, he pulled a gun out on me, and that's what made me leave Texas and come back to Louisiana," said her mother. "I kept telling her to leave him, but she's 27. She's grown. I can't tell her nothing."

In a release, the sheriff's office said Sanford was "involved in an ongoing domestic situation" with Davis.

Court records show Davis was charged with assaulting Sanford in May. She told deputies he hit her "10 times in the face" after breaking up with him. In August, he was charged with retaliation after he allegedly threatened to murder her.

Davis, who already had a violent criminal history, was never arrested for the domestic-related charges.

"He is very dangerous and he's armed," said Sanford's cousin Teneera. "We don't want this to happen to anyone else."

This investigation came just 24 hours after an unrelated double-murder at the exact same location, 910 Cypress Station.
