A gunman has opened fire in a neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina, killing at least five people and injuring several others, according to local media. An off-duty police officer is among those killed and the suspect is not in custody.
The incident began just before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday when officers were called for an “active shooter” in the area of Neuse River Greenway in east Raleigh. The exact circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear.
According to initial reports, multiple people have been shot at multiple locations in east Raleigh. Aerial footage showed a car riddled with bullets at one of the scenes, though it wasn’t clear if anyone was inside.
Sources told local news channel ABC11 that at least 5 people were killed, including an off-duty police officer and four to five civilians. Several other people have been injured, including a second police officer.
Police are still searching for the suspect, who may now be barricaded in a nearby garage.
“Residents in the area of McConnell Oliver Drive, Tarheel Club Drive, and Old Milburnie Road are being advised to remain indoors,” police said in a statement. “Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.”
A possible motive for the shooting spree was not immediately known. Witnesses described the gunman as a white male, possibly a teenager, who was dressed in camo and armed with a long barrel shotgun.
A large number of emergency services, including a SWAT team and multiple ambulances, are at the scene.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A California woman has been charged with killing a man by ramming her car into him after accusing him of trying to run over a cat in the street.
Hannah Star Esser, 20, was charged with murder in the death of Victor Anthony Luis, 43, & detained on $1 million bail, the Orange County prosecutor’s office said.
Esser was driving in the community of Cypress on Sunday night when she confronted Luis & accused him of trying to run over a cat.
She & Luis both got out of their vehicles and got into an argument that Esser recorded.
Esser then returned to her car, turned around, drove toward Luis & hit him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This action showed a complete disregard for human life,” District Attorney Todd Spitzer said.
Luis, a father of 5 daughters, was expecting his first grandchild this fall. He was killed in front of his apartment building & “died in his only brother’s arms,” said a statement issued on behalf of his family Wednesday.
“This senseless act of violence has robbed the world of a bright light who will never be forgotten,” the statement said. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to pay for his funeral.
Esser was arrested Sunday & had an initial court appearance Tuesday. She is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 13.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police said Wednesday that they are searching for 5 shooters who ambushed a group of teens outside a Philadelphia high school killing 1 14-year-old & wounding 4 other teenagers after a football scrimmage.
Nicholas Elizalde was killed in the ambush as he & the other teens walked away from an athletic field at Roxborough High School shortly after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Philadelphia Police Captain Jason Smith said during a news conference Wednesday that police believe Elizalde was not the intended target of the shooters.
Smith said the shooters sat in a parked SUV for about 6 minutes waiting for the teens to round the corner behind the school. When they did, 5 shooters — who Smith said also appeared to be juveniles — got out of the car & began firing. One person remained in the car.
“Most if not all of the offenders appear to be juveniles themselves. Nonetheless, they are obviously very dangerous individuals & the need is great to have them identified & taken off the streets as quickly as possible,” Smith said.
One of the shooters chased a 17-year-old victim down the street, striking him in the leg & arm. The shooter then stood over the teen & tried to empty his gun, but Smith said he had either run out of bullets or the gun had jammed.
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Fox5) - Rapper Fetty Wap pleaded guilty on Monday in federal court in New York to a conspiracy drug charge & now faces at least 5 years in prison.
Federal authorities first arrested Wap, whose real name is Willie Junior Maxwell II, last October on federal charges of participating in a conspiracy to smuggle large amounts of heroin, fentanyl & other drugs into the New York City area. He was later released on bond.
But 2 weeks ago, U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven Locke revoked Wap's bond and ordered back behind bars for violating the terms of his pretrial release.
The FBI claimed Wap threatened to kill a person while on a FaceTime video call in 2021. During the call, Fetty Wap repeatedly threatened, "I'm going to kill you" while pointing a gun at the screen. After the man on the other end of the call called Fetty a rat, the rapper said, "Your man is a rat."
On Monday, Wap faced the same magistrate in Central Islip & pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute & possess controlled substances, the top charge in the indictment. That charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years in prison. But federal sentencing guidelines are likely to recommend additional years in prison.
Federal authorities accused Wap & 5 co-defendants of conspiring to possess & distribute more than 100 kilograms of heroin, fentanyl & crack cocaine between June 2019 & June 2020.
Wap, whose hometown is Paterson, is perhaps best known for his hit "Trap Queen."
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A 81-year-old Danish woman traveling from Africa to Canada was arrested at Warsaw airport on suspicion of illegal possession of heroin worth over $515,000, officials in Poland said Friday.
Customs officers at Frederic Chopin Airport decided to check the woman’s luggage Sunday after becoming suspicious of her itinerary and her uneasy behavior. Packages with 5 kilograms (11 pounds) of heroin were discovered under a false suitcase bottom.
The woman, traveling from Malawi and Kenya through Doha and Warsaw, denied any wrongdoing and said family members had given her the suitcase with gifts for relatives in Canada, according to Aleksandra Skrzyniarz, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office in Warsaw.
She was detained for three months and prosecutors have opened an investigation. Under Polish law, she faces up to 15 years in prison for illegal possession of narcotics.
Denmark officials confirmed that a Danish citizen was detained in Poland and said the ministry is “providing consular assistance.”

SAN DIEGO (ABC7 Chicago) More than 5,000 pounds of methamphetamine were seized this week after authorities in San Diego County tracked and intercepted a truck that crossed the US border from Mexico, officials said Friday.
Four men from Tijuana, Mexico, were arrested & charged with conspiracy to distribute the highly addictive drug in what officials described as one of the largest meth busts in San Diego County.
"This monumental seizure represents another win against drug cartels that fuel addiction in the United States," said Shelly S. Howe, a Special Agent in Charge at the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
The 20-foot commercial truck, which was carrying 148 meth bundles, crossed the border Thursday through the Otay Mesa Commercial Port of Entry in San Diego, the US Attorney's Office said in a statement.
Law enforcement followed the vehicle to National City, California, where agents saw the accused men unloading dozens of cardboard boxes from the truck into a Dodge van. The bundles found in the boxes tested positive for methamphetamine.
In April, US Customs and Border Protection officers in California seized more than 400 pounds of meth, cocaine & heroin concealed in toolboxes that were being transported to the country. That seizure carried an estimated street value of $2.56 million, CBP said.
Meth is a highly addictive stimulant that usually takes the form of a powder. In 2020, more than 23,000 Americans died from overdoses involving psychostimulants, primarily meth, according to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
CHICAGO (AP) — At least five people are dead and 19 were taken to hospitals after a shooting at a July Fourth parade in a Chicago suburb, police said.
The shooting in Highland Park disrupted the annual parade just after it began at 10 a.m.
Highland Park Police said in a statement that five people were killed and 19 people were taken to hospitals. It was unclear if the five dead were among the 19 hospitalized.
The police said authorities are still searching for the suspect and called it an active incident.

ALLEN, Ky. (AP) — Three law enforcement officers were killed & 5 wounded in eastern Kentucky when a man with a rifle opened fire on police attempting to serve a warrant.
Police took 49-year-old Lance Storz into custody late Thursday night after an hourslong standoff at a home in Allen, a small town in the hills of Appalachia.
An emergency management official was also injured & a police dog was killed.
The responding officers encountered “pure hell” when they arrived on the scene, Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt told reporters Friday afternoon.
“They had no chance,” he said.
Hunt said 4 deputies initially responded, then called for backup when they were shot at. The sheriff said Storz surrendered after negotiations that included his family members. Hunt had told local media the deputies were serving a court-issued warrant Thursday evening related to a domestic violence situation.
Hunt said one of his deputies, William Petry & Prestonsburg Police Capt. Ralph Frasure were killed in the shooting. Frasure worked for 39 years in law enforcement in Floyd County. Another Prestonsburg officer, Jacob Chaffins, died after being hospitalized.
Storz was arraigned Friday morning by a judge in Pike County. He pleaded not guilty to 2 counts of murder of a police officer & was jailed on a $10 million bond. One of the charges was originally attempted murder of a police officer, but a judge said at the hearing that was upgraded to murder. He is also facing another attempted murder charge & assault on a service animal.

A convicted murderer on the run since escaping a prison bus after stabbing its driver last month was fatally shot by law enforcement after he killed a family of 5 & stole a truck from a rural weekend cabin, a Texas prison system spokesman said.
Gonzalo Lopez, 46, died in a shootout with police late Thursday in Jourdanton, about 35 miles south of San Antonio, after driving the pickup more than 200 miles from the cabin, said Jason Clark, spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Lopez had an AR-15-style rifle & a pistol that authorities say may have been taken from the cabin.
Authorities in Atascosa County — about 220 miles southwest of the cabin — recognized the stolen pickup from an alert sent out hours earlier by law enforcement and stopped it with spike strips, Clark said. Lopez then crashed the truck into a tree in a residential area and ran.
“Those officers very swiftly shot & killed Lopez bringing this whole ordeal to an end,” Clark said.
The search for Lopez, who escaped while being transported in a caged area of a prison bus, heightened Thursday when someone called police because they were concerned they had not heard from an elderly relative.
Lopez had been the subject of an intensive search since his May 12 escape from the prison bus. He was being transported from a prison in Gatesville, more than 100 miles west of the place where he escaped, to one in Huntsville for a medical appointment when he escaped in Leon County, a rural area between Dallas & Houston.

Gone but never forgotten. Far Rockaway, Queens, New York emcee Lionel Pickens aka Chinx was finally getting his just due and had begun his ascent to the top of the game when he tragically lost his life on May 17, 2015.

SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- At least 13 people were shot or otherwise hit by shrapnel on multiple subway stations along the northbound N train line in Brooklyn Tuesday morning.
Now, a manhunt is underway for a gunman described as wearing a gas mask and an orange construction vest.
It appears at this time to have happened on the train, beginning at the 25th Street station. As the doors closed, the suspect threw smoke bombs and started shooting.
The victims then got off the subway train at the 36th Street station.
At least four of the victims were found at the 36th Street subway station in Sunset Park and another at the 25th Street station in Greenwood Heights just before 8:30 a.m.
Police were looking at as many as four packages initially deemed suspicious, but they were later determined to be unfounded.
The victims were being taken to Maimonides Medical Center, Kings County Hospital and other hospitals.
The suspect was described as a Black male, 5-foot-5 and 175 to 180 pounds.
No arrests have been made, and schools in the area went into a lockdown as the search continues.
An FBI official says they are assisting NYPD and that it remains unclear at this point whether there is any connection to terrorism, but FBI headquarters is monitoring.
NEW YORK CITY (WABC) - ATF agents in Washington, D.C. have arrested the suspect wanted for allegedly stalking homeless men sleeping on the streets of New York City and D.C.
The suspect fatally shot 2 people & wounded 3 more in less than 2 weeks.
He was picked up in southeast Washington early Tuesday morning.
A law enforcement source tells ABC News there is a high degree of confidence the man seen in surveillance photos & videos is the man arrested.
He was taken into custody in Washington, D.C.'s southeast section after allegedly shooting at least 5 homeless men & killing 2 of them in both DC & New York.
Mayor Eric Adams was in D.C. before the arrest & talked about the importance of apprehending the suspect quickly.
"We don't want to lose another resident in this city, in New York, or anywhere else. This person is carrying out a premeditated act of shooting innocent people," Adams said.
Police say ballistic evidence actually linked the same gun to all five shootings.
The DC Police Department's Head of the Homicide Unit, Captain Kevin Kentish, is credited with making the connection between the New York City and DC incidents.
Kintish, a native of Queens, New York, "happened to be scrolling through social media and saw the image of the NYC suspect," Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Robert Contee III said. "During that review, he took that image to his team, based upon the similarities, came together with ATF & forensically connected these cases."
The NYPD says that link was critical & together, the 2 departments & ATF had a trove of clear images and video of the killer.
A $70,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest; $25,000 in NYC, $25,000 in DC & $20,000 from ATF. It's not yet known if anyone will claim the reward money.
Police have arrested a Florida couple, alleging that they physically abused their 13-year-old son & forced the teen to live in a garage for at least 5 years.
Tracy & Timothy Ferriter, both 46, were arrested in Jupiter, Fla., on charges of aggravated child abuse.
Detectives arrived at the Ferriters' home after Tracy reported her teen was missing.
When they arrived, police say, they noticed an 8-by-8 structure inside the garage that Tracy allegedly described as a small office.
Authorities noticed that the structure had a deadbolt that locked from the outside & that its light switch was only on the exterior of the structure. Inside the structure was a mattress, a sheet, some books & other personal items.
When the teen resurfaced at school the following day, he told officers that his parents locked him in the garage structure for up to 18 hours. When an officer asked the teen why he ran away, he allegedly told them, "because I feel like no one loves me."
The teen allegedly pleaded with officers to arrest him, telling them that "he would rather be in prison than be back at home."
Detectives now allege that the Ferriters have been physically abusing & forcibly confining the teen to live in the garage structure since 2017.
The teen was permitted to attend school, but was locked up during the remainder of the day while at home. Meals were brought to him & a bucket was provided in lieu of a bathroom.
A search warrant served at the house revealed thousands of videos from a Ring camera that showed the teen locked inside the structure.
After the Ferriters were taken to jail, 3 other children living in the home were removed by Child Protective Services.
The Ferriters appeared in court on Wednesday morning. According to WPTV, their defense attorney, Nellie King, argued that the child — who had been adopted — suffered from reactive attachment disorder. King said that the disorder was a condition in which a child fails to form a healthy emotional bond with caretakers.
A judge has set the Ferriters' bond at $50,000 each & ordered them not to have contact with their children unless authorized by the Florida Department of Children and Families. They have pleaded not guilty.
