MIAMI (AP) — The mother of rapper Kodak Black and a group of lawyers called a news conference to discuss what they claim is his mistreatment in a federal prison in Miami. But they discovered that just an hour earlier, the rapper had been put on a prison bus to federal facility in Kentucky, a thousand miles away.
Attorneys Benjamin Crump, Devon Jacob and Sue-Ann Robinson said they haven’t been able to see the rapper in weeks. Jacobs said he had emailed and called the Bureau of Prisons to tell them they were coming to the detention center Wednesday.
“They knew we were coming out here, they knew we were doing this today,” Jacob said. “Their refusal to let him see his counsel is, in and of itself, a constitutional violation.”
The 22-year-old rapper, whose real name is Bill Kapri, was sentenced in November to more than three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to weapons charges. He was arrested just before a scheduled concert performance in May.
The rapper admitted in August that he falsified information on federal forms to buy four guns from a Miami-area gun shop on two separate occasions. He also faces drug, weapons and sexual assault charges in other states, and has had several previous arrests.
In a mid-December posting on Black’s Instagram account, he went public with allegations that he had been abused at the Federal Detention Center.
The Miami Herald reported that his mother, Marcelene Simmons, said that when she tried to see him before Christmas, she was falsely accused by prison officials of having contraband.
“They don’t want my son happy,” Simmons said. “That’s why they won’t let me see him.”
Black’s Instagram post offers his side of what happened before, during and after guards intervened in a fight between him and another inmate in October. Black claimed he was “laced with an unknown substance.” After an out-of-body experience and feeling like being possessed, he said, he went to the corrections officers’ office for help, but was denied medical attention. Shortly after, he got into a fight with an inmate.
The Herald reported that the Federal Bureau of Prisons and employees at the detention center declined to comment, but an assistant U.S. attorney and an FBI agent told the newspaper that Black fought with a corrections officer, got pepper-sprayed, and squeezed the guard’s testicles to the point where his abdomen and intestinal wall were breached.
The attorneys say any civil rights lawsuit remains on hold until they can see their client.
His mother wailed during the news conference.
“I want to make sure my son is OK!,” she said. “I don’t want my son to die. If they kill my son, I’ll kill myself, too. Please someone help me.”

Michelle Carter walked out of prison Thursday, more than three months before the end of her 15-month sentence for involuntary manslaughter after encouraging her teen boyfriend’s 2014 suicide through texts and phone calls.
Carter — whose original release date would have been May 5 — shortened her stay in the Bristol County House of Corrections through what is called “good time” credit, which awards up to 10 days per month to inmates who display exemplary behavior by attending programs and classes as well as working inside the jail, sheriff’s office spokesman Jonathan Darling previously told PEOPLE.
She began serving her sentence in February 2019, and ultimately served 11 months and 12 days. She now will begin a five-year period of probation, reports WCVB.
Carter’s conviction followed her role in the death of 18-year-old Conrad Roy III, who was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in his pickup truck on July 13, 2014, in the parking lot of a Kmart in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
In hundreds of texts and statements that came to light afterward, Carter, who was 17 at the time, was revealed to have pressured Roy to go through with his suicide.

Rapper Jarad Anthony Higgins, known by the stage name Juice WRLD, died from oxycodone and codeine toxicity, according to a new medical examiner statement.
Higgins died after what police called a "medical emergency" at Midway Airport in Chicago last month, but the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said at the time that it needed to run more tests to determine cause of death.
The office officially ruled that Higgins' death was an accident on Wednesday.
Local and federal authorities met the 21-year-old rapper's plane in December on the suspicion the rapper was in possession of contraband, the Chicago Police Department said at the time. Officials found 70 pounds of marijuana and six bottles of prescription codeine cough syrup in a search of the luggage on the twin-engine Gulfstream jet.
Police said Higgins began convulsing while police officers were speaking to him and others on the plane. He was given two doses of Narcan, a brand of naloxone used to block the effects of opioid overdose in emergency situations.
Higgins woke up briefly but was later declared dead at a local hospital.
The Chicago-area native was a rising artist considered at the forefront of the emo rap scene. Higgins hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart this last year with the studio album "Death Race for Love" and was signed to Interscope Records.

A former Drexel University professor in Philadelphia who allegedly spent $185,000 in federal grant money on strip clubs and other personal expenses has been charged with theft.
Prosecutors announced the charges against Chika Nwankpa on Tuesday.
The former head of Drexel University's electrical engineering department, Nwankpa misappropriated grant money from the Navy, the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation over a period of 10 years, prosecutors said.
Nwankpa, 57, spent $96,000 in federal grant funds at adult entertainment venues and sports bars between 2010 and 2017, prosecutors said. He also allegedly squandered $89,000 on iTunes purchases and meals.
"Mr. Nwankpa inappropriately and criminally diverted tens of thousands of dollars that were allocated for research purposes toward his own private enjoyment. He betrayed Drexel University and tuition-paying students he was paid to educate," said District Attorney Larry Krasner.
According to the district attorney's office, 48% of the 114 separate charges were done on weekends and 63% were processed between the hours of midnight and 2 a.m.
Drexel University had announced last October that it discovered the alleged fraud in 2017 during an internal audit and alerted the government. Authorities said Nwankpa repaid more than $53,000, resigned from Drexel and was barred from federal contracting for six months.
Drexel paid $189,000 to resolve its potential civil liability in the case.
Nwankpa admitted the unauthorized expenses when confronted by university officials and resigned his post. He has agreed to pay back $53,328.
Nwankpa was freed on $25,000 bail after his arrest on Monday. He was charged with theft by unlawful taking and theft by deception, and could face up to 14 years in prison if convicted on both counts.

A half-dressed female NYPD lieutenant was caught in a drunken, on-the-job sex romp with a male sergeant at a Manhattan police building Saturday night, sources said.
Lt. Brandi Sanchez, 39, and Sgt. Lambros Gavalas, 46, were stripped of their guns and badges for the alleged rendezvous in a department bathroom inside a building used by NYPD personnel at 90 Church St., the sources said.
The 39-year-old lieutenant lives with and has a child with the commanding officer of Brooklyn’s 79th Precinct, Deputy Inspector Timothy Skretch — though that’s not the man she was allegedly caught with, sources said.
The NYPD did not deny the allegations and said the incident is under internal review.

An infant in northern Indiana has died after detectives say she overdosed on methamphetamine that was likely ingested from her mother's breast milk.
According to court documents, Ashlee Rans, 36, called 911 on December 19, 2019 and said she had rolled over onto her 2 -month-old, Nevaeh, while she was sleeping.
After a full autopsy and toxicology report was received by the coroner's office in January 2020, Nevaeh's death was determined to be a homicide. The official report showed the infant had died from acute methamphetamine intoxication. The toxicology report shows that at the time of her death, the baby had both Amphetamine and Methamphetamine in her system.
According to court documents officially filed against Rans on January 15, she initially only admitted to smoking marijuana. After the Nevaeh's autopsy results came back, she admitted to detectives that she had also been using methamphetamine and knew that the drug could be dangerous to her child while breast feeding. She claimed that she had purchased meth at a gas station two days before Nevaeh's death.
Rans said the first time she used meth after giving birth was about two weeks before Nevaeh's death, according to court documents. And she said she did not use drugs during pregnancy.
Rans is now charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death. She faces between 20 and 40 years in prison if convicted.
