Video After The Jump

In this episode of People's Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with rapper, singer and record producer JPEGMAFIA. As one of the most brazen, uncompromising, and unpredictable figures in hip hop today, with this interview JPEGMAFIA keeps it 100, true to form. The wide-ranging conversation includes his early years growing up in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and his move to Alabama at age 13, where he experienced prevalent racism. They also tackle gentrification, Ice Cube's profound influence on both his and Talib's unflinching approach to racism, the punk/hip hop connection, artist's empowerment to control their public image once they've paid dues, and JPEG gives his take on Kanye's support of Trump.

Later the trio discusses JPEG's hometown of Baltimore, pacifism vs. violence to promote social change, how he handles online racists, and the concept of "righteous anger". He also speaks on his years in the military, joining at a time when he saw no other viable options, the black men crying stigma, white fans trading the n-word for "cracker" at his shows, and in closing JPEG offers up words of encouragement to aspiring emcees on the steep uphill climb to success.

Thanks for watching! Be sure to subscribe and rate the audio podcast on Apple and Spotify. Full timestamps below.

APPLE: https://applepodcasts.com/peoplesparty

SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/72bYFZBBZIwc7kdYUmRgFe

TIMESTAMPS

2:01 -- JPEG talks about the unique titles of his projects, which are intentionally off-putting to weed out the people that most likely wouldn't vibe off his music, and also explains the origins of his rap name.

5:29 -- JPEG reflects on growing up in Flatbush, Brooklyn, then moving frequently with his Jamaican parents starting at age 13, finally choosing Baltimore as his home base. He also speaks on the culture shock of the outwards racism he experienced while living in the south, and gives his impartial take on gentrification.

13:22 -- JPEG and Talib reflect on Ice Cube's mega influence and impact on each of them and across the industry. As well as Cube's signature way of attacking racism in America from a street level, everyday approach.

17:00 -- JPEG and Talib discuss the punk/hip hop connection and the freedom, empowerment, and control that an artist feels once they've established a lasting legacy, using Lauryn Hill as an example.

25:47 -- Talib asks JPEG to elaborate on a paraphrased quote regarding withholding the judgement of Kanye West's backing of Donald Trump. JPEG also speaks on how profoundly honored he feels when he hears his idols acknowledge him and are fans of his music.

33:34 -- JPEG speaks on the deep love he has for his hometown of Baltimore. They also discuss it's history of being used as a political football, and pacifism vs. the necessary use of violence, and the combination of both to promote change.

48:18 -- JPEG feels forced to interrupt Talib before he begins quoting Nelson Mandela to apologize in advance if he throws up anytime during the interview, and moments later he apologizes once more. They go on to discuss battling online twitter racists, and the concept of "righteous anger".

53:58 -- JPEG reflects on his military background, joining at a time when he felt he had no other viable options. They also discuss Trump's relationship with the media, and JPEG expresses why he thinks he'll be elected for a second term.

1:04:50 -- JPEG breaks down in detail the analogy he uses of his records being his children.

1:07:53 -- Talib references JPEG's song "Thug Tears", and asks him about the stigma of black men crying, and showing vulnerability.

1:10:14 -- JPEG is asked if he is ready for the last two questions, while he ponders if he needs a reunion with the people's party trash can. Once the show is back on track he responds to prompting his white fans at his shows to trade out the n-word for "cracker" when rapping along with him during sets.

1:15:23 -- Talib closes the show with one of JPEG's most notable quotes about perseverance of aspiring artists on the steep uphill climb to achieving success.

Since coach Bill O’Brien took control of personnel, he hasn’t shied away from making big moves, like trading Jadeveon Clowney and acquiring Laremy Tunsil. Now some teams think O’Brien may make another big move.

Peter King reports in Football Morning in America that two teams said Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is a player to watch in a potential trade.

Hopkins’ contract makes him tradable: A team trading for him would have him under contract for three more years, with $40 million remaining on his deal, while the Texans would take only a $3 million cap hit.

But why would the Texans want to trade the 27-year-old Hopkins? They may think they’ve already gotten his best years out of him, after he averaged a career-low 11.2 yards per catch last season. And they may think they need some draft capital, having traded away their first-round pick this year and their first- and second-round picks next year.

O’Brien would like to add some young talent on the offensive line, the defensive line and the secondary. If trading Hopkins can help him do it, that may be an option.

Video After The Jump

NFL players voted to approve a new collective bargaining agreement with the league's owners, ensuring NFL labor peace through at least 2030 and clearing the way for a 17-game regular season as early as 2021.

The vote to approve was close, at 1019-959. Approval required a majority of the players voting.

"I think that's something we knew, that it would be close," new NFLPA president JC Tretter told ESPN of the close vote. "We just came out of our rep meeting and we had a sense of that based on the discussions. But just as with anything, the majority rules."

The NFL Players Association tweeted news of the approval, saying: "The result comes after a long and democratic process in accordance with our constitution." Tretter lauded the greater share of revenues and post-career benefits but added: "We understand that not all deals are perfect, and we don't take the gains we wanted, but couldn't get, lightly. We now must unite and move forward as a union."

The 10-day voting period, during which any player who paid NFLPA dues during the past calendar year was eligible to vote, concluded at 11:59 p.m. ET on Saturday. Before the voting, the NFLPA estimated that roughly 2,500 players were eligible to vote.

The league's owners voted in February to approve the deal, so the players' approval was all that remained in order to secure it.

Commissioner Roger Goodell also issued a statement, saying: "We are pleased that the players have voted to ratify the proposed new CBA, which will provide substantial benefits to all current and retired players, increase jobs, ensure continued progress on player safety, and give our fans more and better football."

The new CBA will allow the NFL to expand its regular season from 16 to 17 games as early as 2021 and expand the playoff field from 12 teams to 14 as soon as the 2020 season. It also includes higher minimum salaries, improvements to benefits for current and former players, expanded rosters and practice squads, and changes to the league's drug and discipline policies, all of which will go into effect in 2020. The deal would increase the players' share of league revenue from 47% to 48% in 2021 and to at least 48.5% in any season in which 17 regular-season games are played.

Now that a CBA has been agreed to, teams are not allowed to use both the franchise tag and transition tag this offseason. Teams could have used both if the league were still operating under the old CBA. Teams with more than one high-profile tag candidate -- such as the Cowboys, with Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper -- now face a tough decision.

About an hour after the vote was released, sources told ESPN that the salary cap for the 2020 season would be $198.2 million, an increase of $10 million from last season. Overall player costs, which also counts benefits and the performance-based pay pool, per club are $242.9 million.

Several high-profile players, including Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and J.J. Watt, had publicly expressed their disapproval of the deal, which encountered several hiccups en route to player approval.

After the owners voted Feb. 20 to approve the terms of the deal they'd been negotiating with players since April 2019, the union's board of player representatives was scheduled to vote via conference call the next day. But shortly before that vote was to take place, the NFLPA executive council surprisingly voted 6-5 to not recommend the deal. The ensuing player rep conference call resulted not in a vote but in a decision to petition the owners for further concessions.

Owners agreed to meet with the players at the scouting combine in Indianapolis on Feb. 25, and during that meeting some minor concessions were made, but the structure of the deal remained the same. Shortly after midnight that night, the board of player reps voted 17-14 with one abstention to send the deal to the full membership for approval.

The next week, attorneys for the players and for the league met in Washington to hammer out the full, 456-page document outlining the new CBA. That work was completed early in the morning of March 5, and the union announced that voting would begin at 9 a.m. ET that day and run through 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday.

This past week, the player reps gathered in South Florida for their annual meeting and had a contentious discussion about the new deal, the 17-game season and the manner in which the deal was negotiated. At that meeting, the players agreed to extend the voting window by two days, but a resolution that would have allowed players who'd already voted to change their votes was rejected. Panthers offensive tackle Russell Okung, a former executive council member and a vocal opponent of the deal and of NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, filed an unfair labor practices charge with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that Smith illegally negotiated the deal and impeded debate on the issue. That complaint is still pending.

Speaking to ESPN, Tretter was asked if he was worried about players such as Okung rebelling now.

"I don't think so," he said. "I think where we ended our meetings and the tone we ended the meetings on, we're all going to be on the same page."

In the meantime, though, the NFL has a deal in place between the players and owners that runs through 2030. The owners can get to work on negotiating new deals with their TV network partners. And while there remains a chance the start of the 2020 league year could be postponed because of the coronavirus, it remains scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, with the "legal tampering" window set to open at noon on Monday.

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (KTUL/CNN) — An Oklahoma officer was captured on camera collapsing after he was exposed to fentanyl while packing up drug evidence.

Police officers regularly come into contact with dangerous drugs as part of their jobs. Unfortunately, even the smallest touch of fentanyl can have serious consequences.

“Becoming ill, light-headed and actually, basically, passed out or fell,” Bartlesville Police Sergeant Jim Warring said, describing his experience.

Warring can be seen on the video collapsing while packing the evidence believed to be laced with fentanyl. A rush of officers came to his rescue seconds later.

“I don’t know what would have happened had they not acted so quickly,” Bartlesville Police Sergeant Jim Warring said.

Warring said officers quickly gave him Narcan, which is believed to have saved his life.

Former Florida democratic candidate for Governor Andrew Gillum was in a South Beach hotel when authorities responded to a 911 call, and a police report is revealing startling details about what may have happened inside the room.

Aldo Mejias, a 56-year-old unlicensed physician, who lives near Coral Gables, alerted police to the room at the Mondrian South Beach Hotel, where Gillum was found with Travis Dyson, an associate of Mejias.

In a Rent Men profile, Dyson, 30, identifies himself as a “pornstar performer.” On social media, he shared videos of himself with a muscular man he identified as his boyfriend.

Mejias told police officers he entrusted his credit card to Dyson, who identifies himself on social media as a registered nurse. Dyson allegedly rented room 1107 about 4 p.m. Thursday at the Mondrian.

Mejias told police officers he arrived to the room about 11 p.m., and he found Dyson with Gillum, 40. He said both Dyson and Gillum were vomiting, and when Dyson collapsed he conducted chest compressions and called 911.

Officers reported finding three small clear plastic baggies containing suspected crystal meth on both the bed and floor of the hotel room.

“Officers then attempted to speak to Mr. Gillum,” the reporting officer wrote. “Mr. Gillum was unable to communicate with officers due to his inebriated state ... Mr. Gillum left the hotel room and returned to his residence.”

Miami Beach Fire Rescue personnel took Dyson to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. According to the Miami Beach Police Department, Dyson recovered and was conscious and in stable condition.

Gillum was traveling without his wife and was at the Kimpton EPIC Hotel, a hotel employee said. The posh downtown Miami hotel is steps away from the Icon in Brickell where Dyson told officers he lives.

He released a statement Friday, describing Dyson as a friend.

“I was in Miami last night for a wedding celebration ... While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamines,” he said in the statement.

Boxing star Adrien Broner was arrested for DUI late Friday night in Miami Beach, TMZ Sports has learned.

We're told the 30-year-old former champ was stopped by police around 8:45 PM local time -- and officers quickly believed Broner was under the influence, so they arrested him for DUI.

Broner was taken to a nearby station where he was awake long enough to take a drowsy mug shot. Bond was set at $1,000 but he's on an 8-hour hold so he'll be behind bars until at least 4 AM on Saturday.

It's just the latest in a string of legal issues for the former prodigy -- he's been accused of sexually assaulting multiple women, assaulting people in public and he's been sued multiple times for not paying jewelry debts.

Broner was once considered one of the best prospects in boxing. He was a champ in 4 weight classes -- and Floyd Mayweather took him under his wing. At one point, he gave himself the nickname "About Billions."

Broner is 33-4 as a pro -- but he hasn't won a fight since 2017. Since then, he lost to Manny Pacquiao and Mikey Garcia ... and fought to a draw with Jessie Vargas.
