NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s company & its longtime finance chief were charged Thursday in what a prosecutor called a “sweeping & audacious” tax fraud scheme that saw the Trump executive allegedly receive more than $1.7 million in off-the-books compensation, including apartment rent, car payments & school tuition.
It is the first criminal case New York authorities’ two-year investigation into the former president has yielded. According to the indictment filed Wednesday & unveiled Thursday, from 2005 through this year, CFO Allen Weisselberg & the Trump Organization cheated the state and city out of taxes by conspiring to pay senior executives off the books.
Both Weisselberg & lawyers for the Trump Organization pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutor Carey Dunne described a 15-year scheme “orchestrated by the most senior executives.”
Trump himself was not charged at this stage of the investigation, jointly pursued by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. & New York Attorney General Letitia James, both Democrats.
Weiiselberg, 73, was photographed walking into a building that houses both the criminal courts and the Manhattan district attorney’s office around 6:20 a.m. Thursday. He was led into court in the afternoon with his hands cuffed behind his back.
Weisselberg’s lawyers, Mary Mulligan & Bryan Skarlatos, said in a statement before his appearance that the executive would “fight these charges in court.” Skarlatos later said Dunne’s remarks were misleading in regard to his client.
Weisselberg was ordered to surrender his passport after prosecutors called him a flight risk with access to private jets for foreign travel. He was released without bail, however, & left the courthouse without commenting to assembled reporters.
A lieutenant to generations of Trumps, Weisselberg has intimate knowledge of the former president’s business dealings & the case could give prosecutors the means to pressure him into cooperating with an ongoing probe into other aspects of the company’s business.
So far, though, there’s no sign that the man regarded by Trump’s daughter Ivanka as a “fiercely loyal” deputy who’s “stood alongside my father & our family” for decades will suddenly turn on them.

Bill Cosby is huddling with his legal team Thursday, and a potential lawsuit against Montgomery County will be the hot topic on the table.
Sources close to Cosby tell TMZ ... the comedian and his wife, Camille, are angry he's been incarcerated for the last 3 years, and they're exploring his options for legal recourse, including potentially suing the county in Pennsylvania where he was tried.
We're told Cosby and his lawyers are looking into a possible lawsuit for abuse of process, and that's just one of several potential options they're discussing.
Legally speaking ... abuse of process refers to the improper use of a civil or criminal legal process for an unintended, malicious, or perverse reason. In other words, it means Cosby could argue the prosecutor deliberately misused the criminal justice process to prosecute him, despite the fact it meant breaking a promise to Cosby from the previous District Attorney.
As we reported, Cosby was released from prison Wednesday after Pennsylvania's Supreme Court overturned his conviction ... in part because it ruled he should have never been criminally prosecuted based on the agreement he made with former Montgomery County D.A. Bruce Castor.
Since getting out, Cosby's thanked his supporters -- and although the high court decision had nothing to do with his innocence or guilt ... he says, "I have never changed my stance nor my story. I have always maintained my innocence."

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KIRO7) — A suspected peeping Tom is in critical but stable condition after a couple confronted him early Monday outside their 10-year-old daughter’s window & the girl’s father shot him multiple times.
Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to KTRK that the husband & wife, who have not been publicly identified, stated that they intercepted an intoxicated prowler who was inappropriately touching himself outside their young daughter’s window after 2 a.m.
“She looks over at the window & this guy is at her window. … He took my daughter’s innocence away,” the girl’s mother, who did not want to be identified.
Meanwhile, the father told KTRK that his daughter had complained in the past about seeing someone watching her through the window, but neither he nor his wife were ever successful at locating anyone on the premises before Monday morning.
The couple, who armed themselves with legal handguns before exiting their home, attempted to detain the man in their yard, but deputies said the prowler walked across the street to a gas station & they followed him.
According to the TV station, the father entered the gas station to ask employees to call 911, while his wife held her gun on the suspect in the parking lot, but a struggle ensued. When the husband exited the convenience store, the suspect had wrestled his wife’s gun away & was pointing it at her. That’s when the husband fired his gun on the suspect.
Deputies stated that the husband shot the suspect three times, but he told KTRK that he believed he shot the prowler twice in the chest, once in the stomach & once in the side.
No one else was wounded in the shooting & deputies confirmed that the case will be referred to a grand jury.
“We didn’t want this guy to get shot. We were waiting for police to detain him because I’m pretty sure if he did this to my children, he’s doing it to a lot of other children out here,” said the 10-year-old girl’s mom. “We are praying for the suspect & we are also praying for his family,” she added.

Trevor Bauer's assault accuser says the MLB star choked her unconscious & then had non-consensual anal sex with her ... in court docs.
The extremely disturbing allegations are all part of an 84-page temporary restraining order application filed by the alleged victim's attorney ... where she documents 2 meetings that she claims started as consensual sex -- but morphed into a violent attack.
The 21-year-old accuser says she met Bauer on Instagram ... before ultimately driving from San Diego to Los Angeles on April 21 to meet the Dodgers star.
The woman says she & Bauer were having sex ... when he began to aggressively put his fingers down her throat. The woman says she asked him to stop & he complied.
But then, according to the docs, the woman claims Bauer "wrapped my hair around my neck and choked me." The alleged victim says she "lost consciousness."
When she awoke, the woman says she was face down on the bed & Bauer was having anal sex with her. An act to which she says she did not consent or even want.
Later that evening, the alleged victim says she was in pain & bleeding from her anus. However, she didn't believe TB was an imminent threat to her, so she spent the night at his place.
In the morning, she claims Bauer attempted to joke with her, asking ... "You feeling a little sore this morning?"
The woman says she expressed her displeasure with Bauer's actions ... before ultimately leaving.
About 4 weeks later, on May 15, 2021, the woman says Trevor invited her back to his home in L.A.
This time she says they agreed on a safe word.
The woman claims Bauer started to choke her 5 minutes into the sexual encounter, she again lost consciousness & when she woke up, Trevor was punching her in the head & face.
Bauer's accuser alleges her lip was busted open & she could taste blood in her mouth -- but Bauer attempted to comfort her by whispering "You're safe. I'm here" while scratching her back.
The following day, the woman says she went to a hospital in San Diego where she had CT scans performed on her brain, neck and face.
She says when doctors asked how she sustained the injuries, San Diego PD detectives were called. She claims she was taken to another hospital where she met with the department's sexual assault team.
As part of the restraining order application, the woman also provided several photos showing her alleged injuries ... as well as text messages and voicemails from TB.
As for Bauer, his reps claim they also have scores of texts between them ... including one exchange on May 9 -- after that first encounter -- where the accuser enthusiastically talked about being choked unconscious. She allegedly wrote, "Never been more turned one in my life. Gimme all the pain. Rawr."
In another text, she allegedly asked him to "get a couple of slaps in there," and leave a handprint on her butt.
Bauer's camp says it's shared those texts with Pasadena PD, which is investigating the accuser's allegations. As we reported, a judge granted the TRO, which requires Bauer to stay away from the accuser ... at least until July 23, when he can present his side of the story during a formal hearing.
Bauer is ADAMANT their encounters were consensual rough sex between 2 consenting adults.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WXII12) — Kelly Morris worked as a nurse at The Citadel Winston-Salem nursing facility on 1st street. She also has an active TikTok account where she goes by the username "BubbleGumKelz" and often includes content about her job that some say is out of line.
Several viewers contacted WXII12 this weekend expressing concern over videos that appeared to show Morris joking about mistreating her patients.
Morris said the videos are jokes, but she’s been suspended by her employer and she has created a GoFundMe page in order to raise money that she has lost from her suspension.
After speaking with an attorney, Morris opted not to sit down with WXII 12 for an interview, but in a statement to WXII 12 News Morris said: "The only thing hurt in my TikTok videos were people's feelings. All my videos are comedy skits. I can understand how someone can be upset but not to the degree they are taking it. No one was ever harmed and I treat all my patients with great care and they all love me."
Her employer also declined an interview with WXII 12 News but The Citadel at Winston-Salem’s parent company, Accordius Health provided WXII 12 News with the following statement:
“The Citadel at Winston Salem was made aware of TikTok videos by an employee last week. Our team investigated content and acted immediately. Misuse and unprofessional use of social media platforms by employees violates our core values and is not tolerated. Any form of resident abuse is never tolerated. Be assured we have handled the situation and reported her actions to all appropriate state and federal agencies.
"We love our residents; provide for and protect them every day. We are grateful for the global healthcare team that protects the elderly with pride in our profession.”
Morris said she thinks this is an example of so-called "cancel culture" and said she feels as though it is a targeted campaign against her from people who do not understand humor.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Pennsylvania’s highest court overturned Bill Cosby’s sex assault conviction Wednesday after finding an agreement with a previous prosecutor prevented him from being charged in the case.
Cosby has served more than two years of a three- to 10-year sentence at a state prison near Philadelphia. He had vowed to serve all 10 years rather than acknowledge any remorse over the 2004 encounter with accuser Andrea Constand.
The 83-year-old Cosby, who was once beloved as “America’s Dad,” was convicted of drugging and molesting the Temple University employee at his suburban estate.
He was charged in late 2015, when a prosecutor armed with newly unsealed evidence — Cosby’s damaging deposition from her lawsuit — arrested him days before the 12-year statute of limitations expired.
The trial judge had allowed just one other accuser to testify at Cosby’s first trial, when the jury deadlocked. However, he then allowed five other accusers to testify at the retrial about their experiences with Cosby in the 1980s.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court said that testimony tainted the trial, even though a lower appeals court had found it appropriate to show a signature pattern of drugging and molesting women.
Prosecutors did not immediately say if they would appeal or seek to try Cosby for a third time.

NEW YORK (AP) — “Smallville” actor Allison Mack was sentenced to three years in prison on Wednesday for her role in the scandal-ridden, cult-like NXIVM group.
Mack had previously pleaded guilty to charges she manipulated women into becoming sex slaves for the group’s spiritual leader, Keith Raniere. She cooperated against Raniere and took responsibility for helping him create a secret society of brainwashed women who were branded with his initials, which was expected to lower her sentence.
Mack is best known for her role as a young Superman’s close friend on the series “Smallville.”
Raniere was sentenced last year to 120 years in prison for his conviction on sex-trafficking charges.
