Video After The Jump I'm really digging the trend of rappers using bands in concert and live television appearances. It shows the progression of hip hop, from when performances were strictly two turntables and a mic. While I see nothing wrong with the latter, I do think live bands will become more the norm, and will free the dj up to do more cutting and scratching. All that leads up to is me saying Drake was exceptional on Late Show With David Letterman last night (October 1). Where he performed "Show Me A Good Time" from his debut album 'Thank Me Later.' How do you guys feel about live bands vs just the mc and his dj?

Audio After The Jump Nicki Minaj has put female hip hop back on the map. You could argue that she is single handedly carrying the game on her back for femcees. Her album 'Pink Friday' is set to drop November 23, and already there's talk of if it flops, other females might not get that look from major labels. But is that talk accurate or a clever marketing ploy? V-103's DJ Greg Street recently caught up with the Harajuku Barbie and spoke with her about that topic and a lot more. "I'm in a very grateful state right now," Nicki says. "I'm trying to go in with this album so I can make people proud." There's a lot riding on this project, no doubt. Nicki feels like everybody, including her fellow female rappers should support it, or else. "They [major labels] won't look to sign other female rappers if the project doesn't so well. Because they're gonna say 'well, her buzz was so crazy, if she couldn't do it no one can do it'. I don't want that to happen so I'm doing this for all the girls." Although her career has really taken off, Nicki admits there were times early on she wasn't so sure it would. "For a long time in my life, I was afraid to be a solo female rapper, because everyone told me, 'It doesn't work. It's not going to happen. Record companies are never going to invest in you just to get it. Just be part of a group.' " she said. Young Money CEO, Lil Wayne gets released from prison November 4. Nicki says the New Orleans spitter is focused. "I'm afraid for anybody, any of his competition when he gets out. Because I just feel like it's going to be monumental. He's in a great state. When I speak to him, he sounds like he has some sort of clear understanding of everything now, almost like he's had some weird sort of epiphany since he's been there, so I'm sure his stuff is only going to get better." Video After The Jump The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Chris Brown is in the #1 film in the country, "Takers," and now that he's done with Hollywood (for now), he's going back to the lab. "Me, I'm definitely writing on other people's projects. A lot of in-house stuff," Brown said recently in L.A. "I got a lot of artists coming out. The single 'Deuces' features one of my artists K-Mac and Tyga [from Young Money]. I'm pushing forward. The movie's out, so I'mma have fun." "Deuces" is in the top 30 of Billboard's Hot 100 charts and #1 on urban radio. The record's success is simply due to fan support. It's part of Brown and Tyga's Fan of a Fan mixtape and skyrocketed once the video hit virally and on MTV Jams. "That was actually Chris' idea," Tyga told us about putting out a visual for the song. "I thought the record was dope. I thought it was dope for us to do that video. He got to explain his situation. It connects to his fans. His fans miss that from him. "I think the people chose the record," Tyga added. "We put the mixtape out, and we asked them: What record do you like the most? They was like, 'Deuces.' It was always coming up. It was growing on YouTube as well, like 100,000 views a day on YouTube. It was his idea to shoot the video. My homie Colin Tilly, he's done all my videos. He's done everything. All my mixtape stuff to the bigger stuff I'm doing now. He got it right. It's what people wanna see, what they wanna hear." Despite the overwhelming success of Fan of a Fan, Tyga said he and Chris aren't planning an official LP, but they are hitting the road together. "I don't think you wanna drown people too much," Tyga said about making a full album with Brown. "We've been doing a lot of stuff, though. He's on my album. We're actually working on a tour right now. A Fan of Fan Tour at the end of the year. It'll be dope." Tyga has an album coming out soon; it doesn't have a release date yet. But his next mixtape, Well Done, will hit within the next couple of weeks. It's going to be a Gangsta Grillz edition. "I feel like I had to deal with [DJ] Drama. He reminded of Wayne, when he did Dedication with him," Tyga explained. "[Wayne] was going in on every beat. All the mixtapes I've been dropping, they're close to albums. They're more songs. They have more content. This one, I wanted to rap on everybody's beat and murder every beat that's out. It's fun to do that. It's easy. I can knock that out real fast. Drake has already been thanked by the fans with a platinum plaque. Now, the 23-year-old says he wants to reciprocate the love by gifting them a free mixtape. His all-R&B project is coming sooner than later, he says.

"Me and 40 working on it," Drake said in Toronto at his OVO Festival. "I got you. I think I got a great body of work with that tape. I'm gonna do it like I do all my other tapes. I'm gonna make a night out of it. Just make sure you're on the Net that night downloading, and it's yours. I feel the people deserve it. It's hard for me to put out free rap albums these days. So the best I can do is switch genres and put something out for free. It'll be yours very soon."

Although Drizzy didn't reveal any of the records we may find on the tape, Mixtape Daily is guessing that the leaked "Fall for Your Type" (the record appeared unfinished on the Net several weeks ago) may appear somewhere on there.

" ''Fall for Your Type' I wish was on there," he said Sunday while talking about records such as "Darlin' " — another leaker — that didn't make Thank Me Later. "But I have other plans for that record, so it's gonna be good."

As for his next official LP, Drake said he may be simplifying his song structure some.

"What I want is just for the records to be able to be played and enjoyed without it being too complex," he explained.

Drake is definitely doing his own thing and it's working for him. Even though he's with the very big (as in numbers) Young Money crew. He doesn't travel with a large entourage. Matter of fact, I haven't seen any other Young Money artists with him in clips from his recent shows.

Drake Donates $25,000 To Help Build Jamaican Learning Center

Rapper DRAKE has shown off his generous side - the kind-hearted star has donated $25,000 (£16,600) to help build a learning centre in Jamaica.

The Best I Ever Had hitmaker has teamed up with dancehall artist Mavado to aid the construction of a new unit in the Cassava Piece community.

Drake explains that he was moved to offer up the cash after shooting the video for single Find Your Love in the Caribbean country earlier this year (10).

He tells The Jamaica Star newspaper, "I had a great time when I was in Jamaica and the people of Cassava Piece showed me a lot of love. I just wanted to show back some love by helping out with Mavado's project on the Gullyside.

"It's a very positive move and something I am very happy to be a part of. Education is the key to life so to be able to assist in that process is very fulfilling."

It's a benchmark in hip-hop that only three MCs have ever realized: selling 1 million album units during an opening release week.

Eminem achieved the feat — with his second and third albums, The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show, respectively — and in 2008, 50 Cent sold 1.4 million copies of 2005's 'The Massacre' in four days after it was released early due to bootlegging. Lil Wayne joined the exclusive club as he pushed seven-digits worth of his sixth set, Tha Carter III, an act that cemented his ascent to super-stardom.

Kanye West came close with his third collection, Graduation, but stalled just short of the platinum plateau. No rapper has sold a million copies the first week on their debut album. 50 Cent came the closest in 2003 by selling more than 872,000 copies of Get Rich or Die Tryin'. What was even more impressive about 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin' is that it sold over 800,000 again in it's second week. To date the album has sold a staggering 13 million plus worldwide.

Now, on the verge of releasing his major label debut, Thank Me Later, many are wondering whether Drake — last year's mixtape wunderkind — can deliver on all of the hype to become only the third rapper to break the one-million mark in first week sales.

"I always said that his setup was so impeccable, so crazy, that I just thought he would get really close to 1 million," Vibe magazine editor-in-chief Jermaine Hall told MTV News. "The one thing he needed was that big record and I don't think he was able to get his 'Lollipop' out the gate," he said referring to Wayne's breakout Carter III single. "But still, I think the setup is incredible and I expect him to sell 500,000 to 600,000 the first week."

While "Find Your Love" is a favorite among Drake's fans, the Kanye West-produced single has yet to crack the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The melodic track followed Drake's first official single from Thank Me Later, the brooding "Over," an unconventional ode to the paranoia fame can bring; not an especially traditional pair of singles for an upstart rapper.

Also, Thank Me Later, while highly anticipated, is just the latest offering from Drake, who has released a string of records post-So Far Gone, from "Fear" to Forever." Add to that the fact that his album leaked online well ahead of its June 15 release date.

"Obviously, it's 2010, it's not 2003 anymore and the industry has changed a lot and I think everyone has sort of had to trim their expectations because of that," Entertainment Weekly's Simon Vozick-Levinson said. "That's not something that reflects on Drake personally, it's just that it's hard to sell records. To look at some more recent examples of people who have sold more than 500,000 [in a week], Sade did that, Eminem, last year, did about 600,000. These are artists who were gone for a while that had big fan bases waiting for an album to come out. Drake is at a different place in his career."

The EW scribe also said he believed Drake would not cross the one-million mark, instead predicting sales of 300,000 to 400,000 copies of his debut.

XXL's Bonsu Thompson shared the same sentiments, predicting 400,000-plus sales; he noted Drake's achievements and emphasized the rapper's long-term potential, even as he drew the line below gold certification and well below platinum.

"I don't think Drake will do a million his first week," Thompson said. "First, you have to compare it to the rapper who did achieve that, that was Lil Wayne. You have to look at all the elements that contributed to him selling 1 million in the first week. I don't think [Drake] has that smash single. The girls like 'Find Your Love' and the guys dig 'Over,' but it's not like that smash crossover, where everyone is in a state of panic and we have to have this album right now."

Much like box office tallies, first-week sales in music make for splashy headlines, yet ultimately a blockbuster's health is measured not by the opening haul but by how strong the project fends off sharp dips and maintains a steady stream of revenue.

A true star's worth may lie in his ability to avoid the dreaded second-week dive. That's the theory the New York Times' Jon Caramanica subscribes to, noting Drake's own goal may not be realized via those first-week sales. Instead, he noted Drake's ambitious plans, outlining how the rapper's sales down the road may be a better indicator of the impact of his debut.

"I think the real question for Drake is what are his fifth-week numbers, what are his 10th-week numbers, what are his 20th-week numbers, if he still pops in July, in August, in September, then that's a win," Caramanica told MTV News. "Then it doesn't matter if he sells a million the first week. But if he's gonna last, that's the thing, that's a Kanye, that's a Wayne, that's a Jay. And I think ultimately, that's the guy he wants to be considered as. I don't think anyone should get bent out of shape. They should get bent out of shape if he only sells two [copies]."

Drake isn't a singer-and he's the first to admit it. When he released his highly touted 2009 mixtape "So Far Gone," which finds the Toronto-raised artist singing and rapping, he thought he made a huge mistake. "People were like, 'What is this? There's way too much singing on here,' " he says. "We were really nervous about it and for like a week I was having a serious breakdown." But a month later, Drake, born Aubrey Graham, realized there was a method to the madness. "Within like four weeks I noticed I had a brand-new sound that takes a while to digest and understand. Things started to pick up and I started to learn the value of taking risks," he says. Now, the venture is paying off. Last month when the Grammy nominations were announced, Drake learned he was up for best rap solo performance and best rap song for "Best I Ever Had" off "So Far Gone." "I can't say this is unexpected, because, I mean, it's something that's kept me up many nights," the 23-year-old says. "I dreamed about this for a lot of years and have lost lots of sleep over it. This is like the highest honor and I am humbled by this. It's one of the few awards that isn't a popularity contest; you have to make great music to be honored, and this is completely surreal to me." It's an honor, however, that has an unintended side effect. With the two nominations that stemmed from his mixtape, that puts Drake out of the running for best new artist in 2010, when his debut album is released. Lady Gaga experienced a similar technicality in 2009, as she was ineligible for best new artist since her track "Just Dance" was nominated for best dance recording the previous year. The best new artist rules say the nominated performer is eligible for "the first recording which establishes public identity," and a prior nomination indicates that this threshold has already been reached. But that may be just a tiny regret for Drake, who is set up to receive tremendous exposure for his forthcoming set. Drake, who got signed to Universal Motown through mentor Lil Wayne's Young Money label shortly after the release of "So Far Gone," is prepping "Thank Me Later," slated for a February release. "The best part about 'So Far Gone' was that I didn't focus on structure. The only thing that was consistent was the story and the emotion. That's what I want to do with this album," Drake says. "I make music for people to get lost in it, so, as long as it takes you somewhere, then I've succeeded." So far, the album features Kanye West, Wayne, Young Jeezy and Jay-Z, and a collaboration with Sade is on Drake's wish list. "Something happened last night too that might be great-it might serve as the legendary sprinkle for the album," Drake says about another potential partnership on the set. "Shut It Down" and "Fireworks" are two tracks slated to make the album's final cut. "In 2010 I'm really hoping I can stay true to this new way of life I've committed myself to," he says. "I have a special plan to keep the free flow of music going after the album is released. This is definitely a unique path I'm setting out on, and honestly, it's great. Rolling Stone Reports Drake has lined up Jay-Z, Young Jeezy and “Forever” co-stars Kanye West and Lil Wayne to appear on his much-anticipated debut album Thank Me Later, the rapper told MTV News. Backstage at Wednesday’s Grammy Nominations Concert, the MC told Rolling Stone, “My album is slated to come out in March. I’m still working on the album, but they might try to move it up.” Even without releasing a full album, Rolling Stone’s 2009 Artist to Watch was still nominated for a pair of Grammys, locking up nods in both the Best Rap Song and Best Rap Solo Performance categories for “Best I Ever Had.” It hasn’t been all good news for Drake in 2009, as a leg injury forced the Canadian rapper off Lil Wayne’s America’s Most Wanted tour, but it allowed Drake to instead focus on his debut disc. “It’s just pulling everybody together: I had a wish list for my managers of everybody I wanted involved that stem beyond hip-hop,” Drake told MTV. “I’m trying to pull it all together.” One person Drake had high on his wish list of collaborators is R&B singer Sade, though it doesn’t appear that the two have recorded together yet.
