Video After The JumpWhich stars had the biggest 2009? Over the next week, we'll be unveiling our top nine most newsworthy, controversial and fascinating men and women of the year. We based our list on factors like music sales, box-office performance, MTVNews.com headlines and traffic, overall reach (crossover singles, appearances in movies, licensing of songs for commercials, clothing lines, etc.), plus X-factors like "impact" and "buzz." (And no, President Barack Obama didn't make the list — we'll leave that to the folks at Time.) This is by no means an exact science, but we think the list we've put together represents the men and women who helped make 2009 the most exciting and memorable 12 months in recent history.
We'll be rolling out our list of the Top 9 Men and Women of 2009 two per day until Friday, when we unveil MTV News' Man and Woman of the year! As always, we also want to know what you think, so weigh in with comments below, or upload them to Your.MTV.com!
9. Eminem
The (formerly) Blond Bomber returned in 2009 with Relapse, his first album in nearly five years, but if he was rusty, it certainly didn't show. Em sold a million-plus, put the entire industry on blast, feuded with his fellow MCs and reestablished himself as one of the biggest names in the game. It was just like old times. Along the way, he also managed to stir up a whole kettle of controversy, get mauled by a fictional German TV personality and make a cameo in a Judd Apatow flick. All of which made 2009 a very big year for Mr. Mathers.

Poinsettias and politics mixed and mingled at Sunday's Christmas in Washington holiday concert as President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama watched a glittery lineup of artists treat guests to festive performances at the National Building Museum.
Rob Thomas, Mary J. Blige, Sugarland, Neil Diamond, Usher and Justin Bieber were on hand to sing holiday tunes new and old to a crowd of about 500 at the museum, which was festooned with all the things that make a Washington Christmas: sparkling trees, bright red poinsettias, twinkly lights and Secret Service agents
"Welcome to Christmas in Washington, where Santa is a registered independent," host George Lopez joked at the start of the show.
During the show's rehearsal Saturday, Diamond paused and pointed to a person seated in the audience. "You are sitting where the president of the United States is going to be sitting tomorrow, so I am going to go like this," Diamond said before doing a little dance.
Diamond opened the show with a rousing performance of Joy to the World, Winter Wonderland and his original song Cherry, Cherry Christmas.
Blige, clad in a fitted shiny sheath dress, sang a soulful rendition of The Christmas Song.
Introducing a special performance by YouTube sensation Justin Bieber, Lopez pointed out, "Like you, Mr. President, this young man has many fans trying to shake his hand without permission." The 15-year-old sang Stevie Wonder's Someday at Christmas, a song sure to have delighted the Obamas, who are fans of Wonder.
"I'm Mr. Christmas," Thomas joked before the show. Thomas, who performed at the ceremonial lighting of New York's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, came to Washington to sing his original song A New York Christmas, which he wrote after 9/11 and benefits his charitable foundation, Sidewalk Angels.
Even though a holiday album was never an option for his band, Matchbox Twenty— "Our bass player was Jewish and never wanted to do a Christmas record" — "now that I've started to do more solo stuff, then maybe I could. And at 37 it sounds like more fun than it did at 27. At 37 you don't care about being cool."
Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, who recently released a holiday album of their own, sang the title song, Gold and Green. "We wanted to try our hand at least at writing Christmas classics in the style of Bing Crosby, where it's orchestrated," Nettles says. Adds Bush: "Melodies you'll never forget. If you think about it, they're like nursery rhymes for grown-ups."
Nettles, who was in the nation's capital a week ago to sing at the Kennedy Center Honors, joked that between that and her performance at Obama's inauguration, she has it down when it comes to singing for the president: "I'm pretty sure at this point I can just come over and knock on his door with a casserole."
At the end of the program, Obama thanked the performers "for sharing wonderful holiday spirit this evening." As he named each of the artists, Obama mispronounced Bieber's name. Correcting his error, Obama explained his mistake by noting "he was just discovered," and the crowd laughed.
The program concluded with the Obamas joining all of the artists in singing Hark the Herald Angels Sing.
The show will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT Dec. 20 on TNT. Christmas in Washington benefits the National Children's Medical Center.
If you haven't seen the Youtube clip yet, rapper Kid Cudi punched a fan in the front row of his concert in Vancouver over the weekend.
The fan, who goes by the name of Michael Sharpe, sent in a few photos of himself to TMZ, after the punch, adding that he's just fine and doesn't plan to press charges.
According to Sharpe's explanation to TMZ, this is why it happened:
Someone behind him threw a wallet onto the stage. He says Cudi tossed it back to the crowd and Michael caught it -- but since it wasn't his, he tossed it back. Sharpe says that's when Cudi came towards him and, he says, Cudi started to punch him.
Sharpe says his friends held him back and security quickly pulled Cudi away. Sharpe told us, "I'm not upset, I'm not going to be that person. I just want to meet him and be like 'I'm the guy you punched.' I'm not going to press charges."
The kid suffered a minor laceration under the right eye, but seems to be fine.

Buju Banton, the Jamaican reggae star whose anti-gay lyrics have drawn international criticism, is in a federal lockup in Miami, facing drug conspiracy charges.
Drug Enforcement Administration agents say Banton, real name Mark Anthony Myrie, has been in custody since Thursday and will soon be transferred to Tampa, where the U.S. Attorney is charging him with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilos of cocaine.
Banton has homes both in Jamaica and Tamarac.
While legions of dancehall reggae enthusiasts view Banton as one of the most prolific voices of Jamaica's poor masses, critics say he's a gay basher whose lyrics incite violence by calling for attacking and torturing homosexuals.
His song Boom Bye Bye, a dancehall hit released in the 1990s, advocates shooting gays in the head and setting them on fire.
As late as September, Banton's local management told The Miami Herald that the criticism of the star was unwarranted because he had stopped singing the song years ago. The song remains a hit among reggae DJs.
Still, such lyrics have made Banton one of the more controversial reggae artists, with angry gay activists this fall forcing the cancellation of a string of concerts by the artists during a U.S. tour that included a Halloween night concert in Miami.
Recently the firestorm ratched up after the Grammys announced that Banton's album Rasta Got Soul, released earlier this year, was up for an award.
Gay Men of African Descent and the National Black Justice Coalition joined with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation in a petition drive protesting the nomination.

AKRON, Ohio -- Police in Ohio say the mother of Pittsburgh Steelers star James Harrison has been charged with assault following a brawl at a game-watching party in a community hall.
Akron police say 62-year-old Mildred Harrison was one of three people cited after the fight at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post Thursday.
Police say it's not clear why the party turned violent about 10 p.m., during Cleveland's 13-6 upset of division foe Pittsburgh.
Victims have told police they were pushed, punched and struck with beer bottles.
Harrison is due in Akron Municipal Court on Thursday. She declined to comment to the Akron Beacon-Journal when reached by telephone at her Akron home Friday.

You hear a lot of negative things about rappers these days, but they often do good deeds that go unnoticed by the media..
Rapper Nelly follows the lead of 50 Cent, Master P, Jay Rock and KRS One and gives back to the community for the holidays.
The St Louis mc didn't let the recent break-in at his home slow him down as he spent time at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Pediatric Hospital on Friday (Dec. 11). Playing Nintendo Wii and signing autographs for cancer patients there.
Nelly knows firsthand the heartache of losing a loved one to cancer. His sister Jackie Donahue, 31 lost a four year battle to leukemia in 2005.
Props to Nelly for giving these kids a gift they will always remember and cherish.

Kid Cudiopened up a can of emo at a show in Vancouver, Canada.
A fan threw a wallet onstage prompting Cudi to jump in the audience to punch the guy in the face. Sucks the video has no sound, I would have liked to hear what was said before and after the punch.

Lil Wayne’supscale Miami apartment is proving a difficult sell due to the superstar emcee’s predilection for marijuana.
The NY Post reports that the New Orleans native has been renting the 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment from a landlord who has listed the property for $520,000.
The marijuana issue became public knowledge after several prospective buyers were taken aback by the signature aroma when visiting the home.
"My fiancée and I called to make an appointment to see it, and the broker, deadpan, goes, 'I have two questions: Are you offended by the smell of marijuana?” an unidentified couple told the NY Post. “And do you mind coming late in the afternoon? It's currently rented by Lil Wayne, and these are not morning people."
Although the couple was initially taken aback by the apartment’s abundance of scantily-clad women, they praised the Grammy-winning rapper for his neatness.
"Once we got there, a member of Wayne's posse opened the door to the overwhelming smell of marijuana. Two hot, rap-video-looking girls were walking around in nothing but a bra and underwear, blasting hip-hop. We just went in and looked around and tried not to stare,” they revealed. "He had a perfectly organized closet of crisp T-shirts on hangers, neatly stacked piles of XXL magazine, and a fully stocked bar featuring multiple bottles of Hennessy Black."
Wayne’s recreational use of syrup and marijuana has been the subject of intense media scrutiny, and the rapper addressed those issues in two interviews this year with Tim Westwood and Katie Couric.
“Whatever the hell was in my cup the reaction I did was get more popular, more successful, learn how to play guitar, put on the autotune and stretched my voice, and became #1 in the country with everything I dropped. I should probably pick that cup back up,” Wayne argued. “I will stand up for marijuana any day. I’m a rapper. That’s who I am, Miss Katie, and I am a gangster and I do what I want. And I love to smoke. And I smoke.”
Wayne’s rock project Rebirth has witnessed several delays this year and is now scheduled to drop in February 2010.
That month, Wayne will also be sentenced on his October 22 guilty plea for criminal possession of a weapon. He is expected to receive one year in prison.

Since Michael Jackson’s untimely death in late June, the King of Pop has been honored at almost every major awards ceremony, from the VMAs to the AMAs. Now comes word Jackson will posthumously receive a lifetime achievement prize at January’s Grammy Awards, where his remarkable achievements will almost certainly be celebrated once again.
Chris Brown was slated to perform at last year’s Grammys, but pulled out of the ceremony after his altercation with then-girlfriend Rihanna the night before the event. The assault — which resulted in Brown pleading guilty in exchange for probation, community labor and anger-management classes — also prevented the young star from participating in the Jackson tribute at the BET Awards, which were held just days after the King of Pop’s death. In the new issue of Vibe, which hits stands next week, Brown confirms what Rolling Stone had learned at the time: that he was yanked from the show at the last minute.
“I was watching it, holding my face, like ‘Oh my God, this is wack,’ ” he tells Vibe, complaining about the production values of the BET tribute. “I was expecting them to have Usher, Omarion and even Justin [Timberlake]. They were so bent on not getting me there that they messed up their own show.”
Brown says the show told him he was pulled over concerns about sponsors. “I felt like BET should have been looking at the people who got drug charges, gun charges, weapons, other stuff,” he adds. “You can’t discriminate against one person because you’re afraid the media is going to kill you.”
Talking about the clubby song “Pass Out” on his new album Graffiti, Brown says he was aiming for a wider appeal, inspired once again by his fallen idol. “Michael Jackson didn’t make music for one audience. Rolling Stones and the Beatles, too.”
(Note: Of the performers on the BET Awards show that Chris was not allowed to perform on. I could only find two with weapons or drug related offenses. Jay-Z plead guilty and was sentenced to probation for stabbing record executive Lance "Un" Rivera in 1999. Lil Wayne has had numerous run ins with the law, Including arrests for possession of cocaine, weed, ecstasy and most recently a gun charge that will result in the New Orleans rapper serving one year in prison.
So is Chris Brown taking shots at them? Or is he simply pointing out the one sided view of BET executives for not letting him perform following his assault of then girlfriend Rihanna?)

WEST HOLLYWOOD -- Four people were arrested late Friday for being drunk and disorderly outside the House of Blues during a performance by gangsta rap pioneer Ice Cube, police said.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip.
Authorities said the four suspects were intoxicated.
"Some people had too much to drink, and deputies took two of them into custody," said Sgt. Dave Valentine of the sheriff's West Hollywood station. "One or two others tried to get involved and got in a scrap with the deputies."
At least one of the four was booked on suspicion of battery on a peace officer, Valentine said.
No one was hurt, and the incident didn't affect the concert.
Last year, a brawl inside and outside the venue involving more than 100 people shut down the Strip for almost an entire evening, but there has not been such a major incident since then.
Ice Cube's real name is O'Shea Jackson. The 39-year-old rap artist and actor first gained notoriety as a member of the controversial group N.W.A., who gained international fame for their portrayal of South Los Angeles street life in the 1988 release of "Straight Outta Compton."

In other news, MTV has decided to cancel Alexa Chung's show. This was the networks first attempt at a daytime talk show and it obviously didn't meet expectations. The last episode will air December 17th.

The new President of Priority Records, Snoop Dogg continued his talk show circuit tour last night (December 11) promoting his new album "Malice In Wonderland.. Stopping by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Snoop kicked it with Jimmy for a bit before giving a special Snoop reading of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas". The west coast Don came back later in the show and performed a sick version of "I Wanna Rock" with The Roots Band.
Tiger Woods said Friday he is taking an indefinite leave from golf to work on saving his marriage, using the word "infidelity" for the first time in a statement posted on his Web site.
"After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf," Woods said. "I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person."
The announcement came two weeks after a car accident that set in motion a shocking downfall for the world's No. 1 player, which has included sordid allegations of numerous extramarital affairs. One woman even shared a voicemail she said Woods left her two nights before his Nov. 27 accident.
Woods has not been seen in public since the accident.
"I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children," Woods said. "I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try."
How long Woods will stay away from golf was unclear.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said "we look forward to Tiger's return to the PGA Tour when he determines the time is right for him."
"We fully support Tiger's decision to step away from competitive golf to focus on his family," Finchem said Friday in a statement. "His priorities are where they need to be, and we will continue to respect and honor his family's request for privacy."
A year ago, Woods was out of golf for eight months while recovering from reconstructive knee surgery, and television ratings dropped 50 percent during his absence.
"I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding," the statement says. "What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing."
Woods and his wife, Elin, have been married five years and have a 2-year-old daughter and 10-month-old son.
"Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period."
